AMD in the first quarter garnered just 4% of the commercial market occupied by businesses with more than 1,000 employees, according to Dataquest. But in other business categories, the Sunnyvale, Calif. company made some significant gains. AMD's market share among companies with fewer than 100 employees grew from 17 to 30%, and among companies with 100 to 999 employees from 8 to 14%.
Additionally, in the education sector, AMD's share increased to 19% during the first quarter, compared with 12% the previous quarter. And the company's share in the government sector grew to 26%, versus 13% during the fourth quarter of 2000.
Dataquest hasn't compiled figures for the second quarter yet. Mercury Research, Scottsdale, Ariz.,, doesn't break out shares for the different PC markets, but its second-quarter figures show overall momentum with AMD, with the company taking 22.2% of the market versus 76.7% for Intel. In the fourth quarter of last year, AMD had just 17.2% share compared to 81.5% for Intel.
It's difficult to make gains in the enterprise market where corporate buyers are conservative and look for a supplier with a track record and stable supply line, said analysts.
MM(stefana3a) wordt weer bedankt.
After having had the chance to use this setup for over quite some time now, there isn't much that I can fault in the system, it does exactly what it's made for very well. It's loud, crisp and clear.

It is a shame that no first-tier OEMs have put their weight behind the dual Athlon platform. Especially in the case of the CAD and Content Creation markets, which would seriously benefit from a platform which is up to 30% faster and is very competitive in terms of price. Of course, the Tyan Thunder K7 is not the easiest board to build a system around and the board has experienced some teething problems. However, our demo system has survived weeks of intensive benchmarks, and while it is only one system, it adds a lot of weight to the argument that it indeed is possible to build a stable dual-processor Athlon workstation.
Following Via's announcement this week, Intel claimed the company is not authorized to sell the product. "They are not licensed to sell products that are compatible with the Pentium 4," Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy said.
Dual Athlon and P4 servers will allow a programmable 1T/2T per CMD, based on the memory requirements of the boards, and the DDR333 chipsets Via will produce will include a Zootrope GFX core too. Future plans include dual interface methods for both AGP and XIP ports.
The research also shows that Java usage has been rising at the expense of Visual Basic and C/C++. "This means that, for the first time, more North American developers will be using Java than Visual Basic or C/C++ next year," Garvin said. "Java usage is even stronger outside North America, with almost 60 percent of developers expecting to spend some part of their programming time using Java."
