De CD fanaten bij CDRInfo.com brengen ons een review van de KenWood 72x TrueX CD-Rom speler. Hoewel deze 72x IDE drive inderdaad errug snel kan zijn heeft het ding wel grote problemen met eigen gebakken CD's, vooral als er gebruik is gemaakt van een El Cheapo merk. Herschrijfbare CD's blijken vaak helemaal niet leesbaar. Door de hoge DAE snelheid blijkt de drive verder ook niet echt geschikt voor foutloze rips.

The KenWood 72x TrueX CD-Rom supposed to be the king of CD-Roms and dominate the title of "fastest CD-Rom on planet". However, reality is not exactly, as KenWood would expect...

The drive performs very well with pressed CDs and outperforms any other CDRom in WinBench data test. In addition, drive performs well with Audio pressed CDs and gives back fast but not very accurate wav files. If your CD is not in a perfect condition, you will face problems. Also noticeable is how quiet the drive is, since it operates only from 2700- 5100ppm when most 40x-50x CD-Roms goes up to 8000-9000ppm and produce lot of noise!

The weakest point of the drive is the compatibility problem, which we faced with blue dye media written at various speeds. In some cases, the drive had a hard time to read the CD (very poor performance) and in other cases, the drive could not read the written media at all! Also the drive needs to improve it's RW reading capability since it failed to recognize two RW CDs, which worked without any problems, into other CD-Roms and CDR-W drive we had.

Let's get down to brass tacks here. Agilent has been promising a better heatsink and fan combination for over a year now and they have certainly delivered on their promise. They have put together the smallest performance cooler we have seen from anyone yet. I think anyone purchasing the ArctiCooler is going to go away and be a very happy customer. This is not to say ANY of the others are BAD products because they certainly are not. Alpha and Global Win have produced great products for us OverClockers for some time now and hopefully they will continue to do so. It just seems that Agilent has come into the picture and raised the bar though. As with many computer parts, competition is going to push this industry forward and we can surely count on Alpha and Global Win to design newer and better products to try and push ahead of their competitors.

One thing that is hindering the ArctiCooler at this point is the fact that it is not yet available on the retail market. We are told we will see product on the shelves soon. SomethingI have not gotten an answer on at this point, is the cost of the cooler. There is no doubt that the actual production cost of the ArctiCooler is less than the Alpha. Hopefully we will see it fall into something less than the $20 range.

Rambus heeft aangekondigd dat grote PC fabrikanten zoals Dell en HP RDRAM gebruiken in mainstream PC's van onder de $1200 dollar. Hier een gedeelte uit dit artikel van Electic Tech:

Semenstick schrijft: "Microsoft heeft de weinig eervolle titel geprolongeerd als OS met de meeste bugs. Dit biedt natuurlijk weer graan onder de molen van de MS haters onder ons. Maar ook Linux is verre van kevervrij.":

Volgens Security Focus.com werden afgelopen jaar 99 fouten in Windows NT gesignaleerd. Dit jaar loopt de teller alweer op tot 32 bugs. Sinds 1998 voert het besturingssysteem de 'buglijsten' van Security Focus aan, zo stelt het bedrijf ironisch.

Windows 2000 is er in drie maanden tijd in geslaagd zich op te werken naar de tweede plaats in het overzicht: negentien meldingen over tekortkomingen zijn al geregistreerd. Over 1999 kwamen Windows 98, 95 en 3.1 samen tot 46 bugs. Dit jaar zijn er voor deze systemen elf meldingen over fouten binnen.

Ronduit het veiligste systeem was volgens Security Focus.com MacOS, waarin vorig jaar maar vijf kwetsbare punten werden gesignaleerd. Dit jaar zijn er in MacOS nog geen bugs geconstateerd.

Zoals verwacht ziet het Amerikaanse ministerie van Justitie niets in de voorstellen zoals Microsoft die vorige week bekend maakte ter voorkoming van een opsplitsing. Volgens het DoJ doet het bedrijf niks om eerder geleden schade van concurrenten tegemoet te komen. Daarnaast bieden de voorstellen ook totaal geen oplossing voor de toekomst omdat MS nog steeds op dezelfde manier gebruik kan maken van haar monopolie positie.

The government's brief argues that Microsoft failed to address the antitrust violations that Judge Jackson found in his "conclusions of law" issued on April 3.

"Instead, it offered a cosmetic remedy that would have virtually no competitive significance," the government's filing said. "It would neither undo the harm that Microsoft inflicted on competition nor prevent Microsoft from illegally using its monopoly power to inflict similar harm in the future."

Na eerst uit de doeken te hebben gedaan hoe TnL werkt hebben ze wat leuke benchmarks gemaakt: deze laten zien dat de maximale TnL snelheid in de meeste gevallen op een GeForce kaart hoger is dan op een Pentium III of Athlon :

The first that leaps to the eye is the obvious dragging of Celeron. The intensive optimization of Direct3D Software T&L Engine for the SSE not only gives Pentium III a clear advantage over Celeron, but also makes it on some occasions faster than the hardware T&L. The same applies to Athlon.

Marcel meldt dat Silvino Orozco van Tom's Hardware Guide een review heeft geschreven van de Asus V7700 pure. Deze kaart is snel (duh) maar niet sneller dan een willekeurige andere GeForce2 (duh ), daarom heeft Asus gelukkig wel iets gedaan om dit kaartje boven de rest uit te laten steken: Hardware Monitoring :

Asus has always been known to go above and beyond the competition when it comes to the quality of their product as they put extra development time into their custom designs. This time around about the only noticeable feature that you can see on this board is the slightly improved thermal solution over the reference design that most companies are using. Keep in mind that this is the "Pure" version that Asus makes and does not come with any type of video in or out. I also noticed that the backside of the board didn't come with a connection for the VR Glasses so I'm a bit puzzled as to if they will support this feature as they claim to be able to on their website but not on the retail box itself. Regardless the board layout looked clean and on par with what you would normally expect from Asus.

The contestants in this comparison are all very close together from price to performance. The things that currently place each competitor apart from the others are added features; as quality, performance and cost are essentially dead even. Although Asus made a strong effort to obtain the title of the best GeForce2 card and had a few minor perks over my previous winner the Leadtek WFGF2, it fell short of the Leadtek board as it missed the major feature of video out that Leadtek offers. Although the prices are dead even among this group, the Leadtek just flat out offers more bang for the buck and that's why it's still my choice for best GeForce2 solution available.

Bij Thresh's FiringSquad keken ze naar de overklokbaarheid van de 800MHz Pentium III in SECC2 verpakking. Helaas werd de magische 1GHz grens niet gehaald maar moesten ze genoegen nemen met (slechts) 976MHz Een tweede exemplaar strandde al iets eerder op 952MHz.

Some might consider our overclocking results disappointing, but you have to remember that the Coppermine P3 doesn't have much headroom right now. The company is having a hard enough time supplying OEMs with a constant stream of high-speed processors. The Willamette is supposed to take Intel beyond the 1GHz mark. Intel demonstrated a 1.5GHz Willamette last February at IDF.

The 952MHz and 976MHz overclocked speeds are pretty respectable. Of course, the percentage gains still nowhere near the %50 gains of the original Celerons and the current Celeron 2s. Then again, when you're starting from 800Mhz there's not much farther you can go from there. As we see in the benchmarks, the jump from 800MHz to 976MHz still has a significant impact on performance.

Softwaregigant Microsoft neemt een belang in internetaanbieder Chello, een dochter van het Amsterdamse kabelbedrijf UPC. Het nieuws werd vrijdag bekendgemaakt, tegelijk met de details van de beursgang van Chello, dat internet aanbiedt via de tv-kabel. Op 31 mei gaat het aandeel in Amsterdam en op de Nasdaq de beursvloer op.

Samen met Microsoft neemt ook het Amerikaanse Liberty Media, een amusementsbedrijf, een belang in Chello. Liberty, onderdeel van conglomeraat AT & T, is ondermeer eigenaar van Discovery Channel en de grootste aandeelhouder van Time Warner.

Tezamen krijgen Microsoft en Liberty een belang van zeven procent in Chello. Nog eens tien procent wordt door UPC naar de beurs gebracht. Vrijdag werd bekend dat de prijs van een aandeel tussen de 13 en 17 euro komt te liggen. De emissie kan Chello 1,7 miljard gulden opleveren. Dat maakt de ondeneming ruim tien miljard gulden waard.

Volgens ZDNet kan AMD op 5 juni 10 nieuwe processors introduceren. De Duron zal leverbaar zijn in versies van 600MHz, 650MHz en 700MHz terwijl de Thunderbird waarschijnlijk dezelfde dag wordt gelanceerd in 700 t/m 1000MHz versies (in stappen van 50MHz). Hieronder een gedeelte:

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. is planning what could be its largest processor launch ever.

The company could launch 10 new processors as soon as June 5, sources said. AMD (NYSE: AMD) has said it will launch its new Duron processor, code-named Spitfire, along with its forthcoming Athlon chip, code-named Thunderbird, in June. It now appears the chips will debut on the same day.

The new chips target both the high-end and low-cost PC markets. The Thunderbird chips will raise the bar for top-end performance, whereas the Duron will offer AMD's first Athlon-based processor as a lower-cost alternative.

Sources said the Duron chip will begin shipping at 600MHz, 650MHz and 700MHz in early June -- possibly as soon June 5. A 750MHz version of the chip will come later, sources said.

The Thunderbird chip, meanwhile, will be available in 50MHz increments, ranging from 700MHz to 1GHz (1,000MHz), sources said. The chips, which retain AMD's current 200MHz system bus, are currently being evaluated by PC makers.

News.com schrijft dat anti-virus padvinders een nieuw virus hebben gesignaleerd dat een complete Windows bak erased wanneer het actief wordt. Het virus is extreem agressief en manipuleert zichzelf om onzichtbaar te blijven voor virus scanners. Net als het I love You virus maakt het nieuwe virus gebruik van bepaalde 'features' in Microsoft Outlook:

Antivirus firms monitoring the new outbreak say only a handful of instances have so far been reported to them. But they caution that the virus has the potential to spread rapidly and cause even more damage than its recent predecessor.

"Everything on the computer is destroyed," said Vincent Weafer, director of Symantec's antivirus research center.

Anand heeft de Detonator 5.22 drivers voor de GeForce2 gekregen (Waarom zijn die nog niet gelekt?) en daarmee is het mogelijk om in elk spel wat Direct 3D ondersteund FSAA te gebruiken. Het ziet er erg mooi uit maar de performance is bagger slecht, iets wat waarschijnlijk (hopelijk) nog wel flink gaat verbeteren aangezien de Direct3D FSAA implentatie nog erg beta is :

Here we see the immediate performance penalty you pay for enabling FSAA. The fact that the performance increases when going from 640 x 480 to 800 x 600 illustrates the premature nature of these drivers, meaning that performance could definitely improve (and most likely will) upon the final release of the drivers. There are also a few more settings between turning off FSAA and this setting (the 4th position on the slider) that will give you a slightly higher frame rate in exchange for degraded FSAA quality.


[...] The 5.22 drivers are far from final, and there is still quite a bit of room for NVIDIA to improve in. Currently the GeForce 2 takes an incredible performance hit upon enabling their D3D FSAA settings, making most of the higher quality settings unplayable options. Since the drivers are in beta form, it isn't clear whether or not the image quality and/or performance will improve, but as it stands now (since these drivers will most likely be leaked somewhere) 3dfx's 4 sample FSAA looks very similar if not better than NVIDIA's highest quality FSAA setting. This may change as the drivers approach their final stage, but it looks as if those users that are very into Direct3D games like Need for Speed 5 in which FSAA offers a tangible benefit to your overall gaming experience, the choice is still with the Voodoo5. For everyone else, the fastest performing card and the best overall card is still the GeForce 2 GTS.

De door Intel georganiseerde 'emergency meeting' met geheugenfabrikanten is op niets uitgelopen, bericht EBN News. Intel hoopte de DRAM fabrikanten er middels een 2 dagen durende vergadering toe te bewegen om hun Rambus produktiecapaciteit uit te breiden, maar de fabrikanten lijken weinig heil in deze plannen te zien. Al na een dag werd de meeting beëindigd, zonder dat het tot duidelijke afspraken was gekomen.

De DRAMmers, bestaande uit Hyundai, Infineon, Micron, NEC, Samsung en Toshiba, blijken wel bereid te zijn om hun capaciteit te vergroten, maar willen dit alleen doen wanneer zij van OEMs garanties krijgen dat geplaatste orders niet gecancelled worden. Dit wil zeggen dat de fabrikanten wel binnenkomende orders accepteren, maar geen eigen voorraden willen bouwen. De reden hiervoor ligt in de jaarlijkse prijsstijging in het derde en vierde kwartaal, waardoor het voor de geheugen fabrikanten aantrekkelijker is om SDRAM chips te produceren. Tevens willen de fabrikanten vasthouden aan de de huidige (hoge) Rambus prijzen:

According to executives who have been briefed on the meeting's outcome, the memory-chip makers told Intel that they would fulfill all incoming Direct RDRAM orders. However, at a time when the industry is having difficulty meeting demand for mainstay SDRAM components (see May 5 story), the companies said they will not build Direct RDRAM parts for inventory without non-cancelable orders.

The group of companies also remained committed to maintaining market prices for Rambus chips, despite what sources said was pressure from Intel to reduce rates. Intel has been hoping for about a 30% premium over SDRAM DIMMs of equivalent densities, but a check of spot-market and OEM contract prices revealed that Rambus memory modules cost at least three times as much.

Voor Intel betekent dit diepe shit, aangezien de beschikbaarheid van Rambus RIMMs uitermate belangrijk is voor het succes van de Willamette.
