De laatste tijd is er heel wat te doen geweest rond Rambus DRAM / DDR SDRAM. Intel had zich voorgenomen om alleen Rambus te ondersteunen voor hun opvolger van de Pentium III, de Willamette, maar doordat niet veel geheugenmakers hier veel voor voelden (zie dit bericht) ging Intel toch nog maar eens kijken wat ze daaraan konden doen.

Vanochtend nog maakte The Register bekend dat Intel aan een noodplan werkte voor de Willamette, maar hierbij werd niet vermeld of het nou om normaal SDRAM of DDR SDRAM ging. Het Duitse PC-Welt brengt in dit bericht de verlossende woorden: ook Intel werkt aan een DDR chipset! De naam van deze mysterieuze chipset is 'Armador':

In einem geheimen Strategiepapier taucht jedoch ein Chipsatz mit dem Codenamen Armador auf, der sowohl für 133 MHz schnelles SDRAM als auch für den brandneuen DDR(Double Data Rate)-Speichertyp gedacht ist.

Intel hat gute Gründe, die Existenz von Armador zu verschweigen: Mit dem Argument, den Pentium IV wird es nur in Verbindung mit Rambus geben, setzt Intel die Hauptplatinen-, Speicher-, und PC-Hersteller unter Druck, um die teure und technisch umstrittene Speichertechnik auf dem Markt durchzudrücken.

Gleichzeitig will sich der Prozessor-Riese offenbar ein Hintertürchen offen halten, sollte die Strategie nicht aufgehen. Denn wenn sich zur Premiere des Pentium IV Rambus-Speicher nicht deutlich den Preisen von SDRAM-Modulen annähern, hat Intel ein Problem. PC-Hersteller werden sich dann schwer tun, Pentium-IV-Rechner zu konkurrenzfähigen Preisen anbieten zu können - und setzen möglicherweise verstärkt auf alternative Plattformen.

AnandTech brengt ons weer eens een review van een GeForce256 DDR kaart (lang geleden). Deze 32MB kaart is Absolute Multimedia's tweede poging om een 32MB DDR kaart op de markt te zetten. De eerdere versie van deze kaart had vooral problemen met het weergeven van 2D in resoluties van 1600x1200 en hoger. De nieuwe kaart heeft deze problemen niet:

This is most likely the fault of Infineon and not Absolute Multimedia, as the quality of the SGRAM chips seen on the Outrageous GeForce DDR must have been lower than average. We are happy to say, since it appears that Infineon has solved its production problems, that the memory clock of the new Outrageous Ultra GeForce DDR was much more forgiving. We were able to push the 6 ns SGRAM chips to 350 MHz (175 MHz DDR), 24 MHz higher than we were able to obtain previously. With a core speed of 156 MHz and a memory clock speed of 350 MHz, the Absolute Multimedia Outrageous Ultra GeForce DDR performs at least on par with the other DDR GeForce cards reviewed, surpassing many in some cases.

Tresh's FiringSquad brengt ons in dit zonnige weekend een (de zoveelste) review van een Geforce2 GTS kaart. In dit geval gaat het om de Asus V7700. Deze kaart wordt standaard geleverd met de handige SmartDoctor utility van Asus, waardoor de kaart zelf op een lagere core speed kan gaan lopen als het wat te heet wordt. De kaart kon met gemak worden overgeclockt naar 240MHz/365MHz. Hier een hap uit de conclusie:

It's looking like most GeForce 2 boards are going to cost near the same $350 price tag of the ASUS V7700. This is nothing new, as the same trend occured when the GeForce was originally announced last fall. The difference is that GeForce 2 cards are available right now. You don't have to wait months for cards to become available, and they all feature DDR memory.

Since most GeForce 2 cards are based on similar designs, the game bundle, availability, and added utilities will probably be the most important factors that will influence your buying decision.

While ASUS still doesn't have the marketing presence of Creative Labs, you still have a pretty good chance of finding the V7700 at your local hardware store, and you'll definitely be able to find it online. We're a bit skeptical of the game bundle, but the Smart Doctor utility and DVD 2000 program will likely be used by many V7700 owners.

If you're looking for a very fast card that's solid and dependable, the V7700 certainly won't disappoint. Future models will include 64MB of DDR memory for even more performance.

When asked a few days ago in a San Francisco comedy club about Metallica's next step in their war with Napster, guitarist Kirk Hammett said, "We're about to deliver another bunch of names to them." Sure enough, on Thursday, lawyers for Metallica sent over -- by computer this time and with no press release or conference -- another 332,293 names, monitored over a one-week period."

The 332,293 distinct users represent 2.2 million copyright violations," said Gayle Fine, spokeswoman for the band's management company, Q Prime. Asked why there was no hoopla surrounding the second delivery of the names, Fine said, "Because we're just trying to get the job done."

According to Fine, Napster has not responded to the new batch of names. Asked if the crusade to stop the copyright violations has been effective, Fine said that of the 317,000 names submitted the first time, only about 30,000 have sent "counter notifications" contesting the blockage. "So that's about a ninety percent success rate," she said. "We consider that a success."
