Huh?? Niemand joinde gisteren DPC!!! Boehoehoehoeeeee....

Een LAN-party in het Deense Esbjerg werd pas geleden bruut verstoord door een inval van de AntiPiracyGroup, die in samenwerking met de de politie een eind maakte aan de pret. Leden van de APG hebben tijdens het evenement bewijsmateriaal verzameld waaruit blijkt dat er vele tientallen gigabytes aan warez werden uitgewisseld door de deelnemers, waarna men tot actie over besloot te gaan. De LAN moest onmiddelijk stoppen, de organisatie wordt aangeklaagd wegens het leveren van een netwerk voor illegale dataoverdrachten en ook iedereen die aanwezig was kan een brief van het Deense anti-warez orgaan verwachten. Hoe de zaak zich gaat ontwikkelen is verre van duidelijk, experts raden de beklaagden in ieder geval af om verklaringen te ondertekenen, omdat de wetsgeldigheid van de diverse acties van de APG - een private organisatie - ernstig te betwisten is. Als het echter aan de APG ligt moeten voortaan op alle LAN-parties de bezoekers een contract onderteken met naam, adres en IP nummer. Daarnaast moet er door de organisatie continu worden gecontroleerd op illegale software:

This situation is very problematic because if the organizers can be sentenced for providing a network there will not be many that would be willing to organize parties and take the risk. This makes the future for lanparties in here in Denmark very uncertain.

At the moment APG have send out a letter to the organizers telling them what to do, if they do not want to end up in the same situation as the people from Connect #12.

A few very important points form this letter are:
- organizers should keep lists of participants name, address and IP during the net.
- organizers should keep track of all activity on the network to pick up illegal data.
- organizers should demand that participants sign a contract saying that they will not bring to or copy illegal data at the net.

Op de vage site van GZeasy zijn benchmarks verschenen van i845D, de update van de Pentium 4 SDRAM chipset met de codenaam Brookdale. De nieuwe versie zal DDR ondersteuning van Intel zelf naar de Pentium 4 brengen. Het moederbord dat op de plaatjes te zien is ondersteunt PC2100 geheugen, in plaats van alleen PC1600 zoals eerder werd beweerd. Hiervoor waren al eerder aanwijzingen opgevangen. Over de tekst valt niet zo heel veel te zeggen, maar de grafiek helemaal onderin spreekt boekdelen. In 3DMark 2001 wint de i845D chipset het van i850, SiS 645 en P4X266, maar dit wordt nog niet volgehouden in andere benchmarks. Gemiddeld zit de nieuwe Intel chipset, die in januari moet verschijnen, net iets onder de oplossing van VIA. P4X266 werd op zijn beurt weer regelmatig overtroeft door de RDRAM chipset:

ExtremeTech schrijft dat Intel op 13 november een nieuwe versie van de Pentium III-S processor aan zal kondigen. Deze serverchip is gebaseerd op de 0,13µ Tualatin core en heeft 512KB L2 cache aan boord. De nieuwe variant zal echter een heel stuk minder stroom verbruiken, om hem geschikt te maken voor zogenaamde "blades". Een server opgebouwd uit blades kan makkelijk worden geupgrade en neemt bovendien erg weinig ruimte per processor in beslag. RLX Technologies Inc. heeft bijvoorbeeld eerder dit jaar al een ontwerp gemaakt waarmee 324 processors in een ruimte kunnen werken waar normaal slechts 42 servers in passen. Om te voorkomen dat het één stookoven wordt is zuinig omspringen met stroom dus een must. Als chipset zal dan ook een aangepaste versie van i830M worden ingezet, die op dit moment dient voor notebooks. Het verschil zit hem in de ECC mogelijkheden van de server-editie:

During the fall Comdex show in Las Vegas, Intel will unveil a new low-power Pentium III-S processor and accompanying chip set that computer makers can package into their upcoming ultradense designs. Compaq Computer Corp., Dell Computer Corp. and Hewlett-Packard Co. have already revealed plans to introduce blade products in the coming months, with those designs likely to be based on Intel architecture.

Intel's newest processor will be a low-voltage version of the Pentium III-S design, which it first shipped this summer. Low-power, cooler-running processors are critical to enable computer makers to package literally hundreds of chips into compact designs.

RedHerring .com brengt ons het nieuws dat Transistive Technologies erin geslaagd zou zijn een zeer efficiënte vorm van emulatiesoftware te ontwikkelen. Deze software, 'Dynamite', zou het mogelijk maken iedere software op iedere hardware te gebruiken met relatief weinig snelheidsverlies. Het bedrijf claimt mac-software op een Athlon 1.4GHz te hebben gedraaid met de snelheid van een (fictieve) PowerPC 1.2GHz. Daarnaast heeft het ARM-software kunnen emuleren op een MIPS-processor. Er zijn al eerder bedrijven geweest die dit soort claims hebben gedaan (denk aan Transmeta), dus de kenners staan kritisch tegenover het bedrijf, tot ze bewijzen hebben gezien:

"I'll have to take a negative attitude until they demonstrate it 100 percent," said Nathan Brookwood of Insight 64, a market analyst firm in Saratoga, California. "It's one of these technical problems that attracts engineers like moths to a flame. If they really could do it, that would be something."

There are some minor problems with emulation. Transitive's translation can get faster over time as it learns the patterns in software translation and stores them. But this storage causes the size of programs to grow somewhat, which hurts performance. And translation doesn't work as fast on code that isn't used very often. Mr. Graham says that these performance costs aren't much, compared to the gains. The company has shown that it can get a 1.4-GHz AMD Athlon computer to run Macintosh code at 1.2 GHz, much faster than the fastest 866-MHz Power PC microprocessors. Speed demons who love Mac applications might be coaxed to pay dearly for that capability.

Op DPreview valt te lezen dat SanDisk een 1GB CompactFlash kaartje gaat lanceren in het eerste kwartaal van volgend jaar. Tot nu toe had alleen de IBM Microdrive die capaciteit, maar deze behoort niet tot flashgeheugen omdat het in weze een kleine harde schijf is. Voor veel mensen is het ook nog eens goed nieuws dat deze kaart een zogenaamde "type I" is, waardoor ie compatible is met meer digitale camera's.

masselink schrijft dat er op Overclocking Opolis een kleine terugblik is verschenen op Windows 1.01. Een onbekend OS waarschijnlijk voor de meeste tweakers, maar het was wel de eerste stap van Bill Gates en de zijnen richting vandaag; Windows XP. Wel een leuk stukje nostalgie:

Volgens De Telegraaf's DigiLink krijgen studenten aan de Universiteit van München lessen in sociale vaardigheden met als doel het 'nerd-gedrag' kwijt te raken . Onderdelen van van de les zijn o.a. het netjes kleden en het aangaan van korte gesprekjes met andere aardbewoners. Het geheel wordt afgesloten met een examen:

De ex-nerds in spé krijgen tijdens de lessen sociale vaardigheid te horen hoe ze zich netjes kunnen kleden en hoe ze korte gesprekjes met de medemens kunnen aanknopen. Dit meldt de Britse nieuwsdienst Ananova.

Ook tafelmanieren komen aan de orde. Het examen voor dit onderdeel vindt niet plaats op de universiteiten, maar in een nabijgelegen hotel.

Kyle Bennett van HardOCP heeft een aantal verschillende merken koelpasta getest om te kijken welke prut je het beste tussen je processor en je heatsink kunt stoppen. Het gaat hier om een aantal bekende merken als Arctic Silver en Nanotherm Blue/Ice, maar ook een aantal noname pasta's worden gebruikt. De gebruikte test-setup bestond uit een Athlon 1400@1533MHz welke voorzien is van een CoolerMaster HCC-002 en geplaatst is op een Abit KT7A-RAID. De verschillende pasta's liggen qua performance niet zover uit elkaar, maar er kan er maar één de beste zijn en dat is Type 44. Arctic Silver en Arctic Silver II behaalden dezelfde prestaties, maar zijn iets gevoeliger voor je portemonnee . Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

Honestly, we have been preaching this lesson for years now, or at least every since there has been a debate on the subject. There is basically no reason to purchase this stuff unless you need some. And in "need" I mean you are out of compound and have to have some more.

We have seen companies claim big decreases in CPU temp with their product. Some have even gone as far as to say their product can give up 7 to 8 degrees better performance. Well, this may well be true if you compare your product to the absolute "worst" on the market you can find. As always, be aware of the marketing hype.

As the graph shows from the top eight results, the temperature difference is negligible. If you have to have the best of the best when it comes to performance, your choices are obvious. If one degree does not make you or break you, you might want to look into the other couple of aspects of these compounds.

When it comes down to us making a suggestion though, we fully stand behind the Type 44 product as we think it gives you the best of all worlds. A top performing compound, that is easy to use and is also easy on the wallet. Remember a fluid ounce of the stuff will most likely get lost long before you ever use it all.

E-mailspecialist MessageLabs heeft in een recent onderzoek ontdekt dat maar liefst 28 procent van de e-mail die bedrijven ontvangen spam, virussen of porno bevat. Deze voor het bedrijf ogenschijnlijk onbelangrijke mailtjes zijn echter wel degelijk significant, aangezien ze per jaar gemiddeld 470 pond (1677 gulden) per werknemer kosten. Een behoorlijk hoog percentage en bedrag, maar in vergelijking tot een eerder gedaan onderzoek van Gartner een verbetering. Indertijd werd een nog hogere nutteloosheidsquote van 34 procent gevonden.

MessageLabs is er bij de berekeningen vanuit gegaan dat er per dag zo'n tien minuten besteed worden aan het lezen en verwijderen van niet-bedrijfsgerelateerde e-mails, zo schrijft WebWereld. Hierbij kan echter de kanttekening gemaakt worden dat de mogelijkheid tot het naar boven afronden ruim aanwezig is, gezien het belang dat het bedrijf heeft bij een 'slechte' uitslag. MessageLabs houdt zich naast dergelijke onderzoeken namelijk ook bezig met het ontwikkelen van filters voor schadelijke mails.

De achttien staten die moeten beslissen over Microsoft's schikkingsvoorstel hebben zich afgelopen weekend ingelezen in de mogelijke oplossing voor het probleem, waar wij donderdag al over berichtten. Uit een eerste reactie waar WebWereld ons van op de hoogte stelt, blijkt dat er met een zeer kritisch oog gekeken wordt naar het 22 pagina's tellende document. Het lijkt er zelfs op, dat de schikking het helemaal niet zal halen zodat er weer opnieuw overlegd zal moeten worden.

Kenners omschrijven het voorstel zelfs als een overwinning voor Microsoft, aangezien er slechts op enkele punten ingebonden hoeft te worden. In verhouding tot de eerder genoemde opsplitsingseisen is dit echter maar een minimale straf. Geschokte concurrenten en consumentengroepen maken dan ook duidelijk het absoluut niet eens te zijn met het schikkingsvoorstel. In hoeverre hier naar geluisterd wordt is nog een kwestie van afwachten, maar echt positief wordt de situatie voor Microsoft niet ingeschat.

AMD heeft vandaag eerder dan verwacht de Atlon XP 1900+ geïntroduceerd. De nieuwste telg in de Athlon XP familie heeft een 66MHz hogere kloksnelheid dan het vorige topmodel en draait nu op 1,6GHz. Volgens AMD rechtvaardigt deze kloksnelheid een Model-rating van 1900+. Uit eerdere tests is reeds gebleken dat de Athlon XP 1800+ in veel gevallen sneller is dan de 2GHz Pentium 4. Het zal daarom weinig verbazing wekken dat de XP 1900+ met gemak op prijs en prestaties kan concurreren met de P4 1,9GHz. De processor is volgens de laatste stand van zaken op Pricewatch.com 11 dollar goedkoper dan een 'vergelijkbare' Pentium 4 en biedt voor een prijs van 265 dollar prestaties die beter zijn dan van de 2GHz P4. Volgens de review van AnandTech komt de snelste P4 alleen in twee SpecViewPerf tests als snelste uit de bus. In alle andere benchmarks, ook die waar de P4 traditioneel sterk presteert zoals MPEG encoding en Quake III, is de XP 1900+ sneller. De verschillen variëren van nog geen procentje tot meer dan 37 procent in Serious Sam 1.02.

Anand concludeert dat de Athlon XP zonder twijfel de meest aantrekkelijk desktop/workstation CPU van dit moment is. Tot de komst van de Northwood in januari of februari 2002 blijft de x86 performance kroon stevig in handen van AMD:

We already know that the Athlon XP is clearly the desktop/workstation CPU to buy today, there's no question to that. What we'd like to see are some more improvements from AMD to the Athlon line that go beyond marketing or pleasing their OEMs (the latter is very important, don't get us wrong; it's the OEMs that rake in the cash). There is no reason the Athlon XP shouldn't have an integrated heat spreader much like the Pentium 4. While more avid users with experience installing heatsinks on Athlon CPUs are fairly unlikely to damage their cores, someone upgrading from an older processor without such experience may learn the hard way just why a heat spreader is important.

[...] As for Intel, their most likely response to the Athlon XP 1900+ is the oh-so-generic declaration of the Pentium 4 2.0GHz as the world's fastest desktop microprocessor. While we anxiously awaited the launch of the 0.13-micron Northwood processors it seems as if the CPU will only sample this year and be commercially available in January/February of 2002. Although that won't be the only interesting product made available in that time period it seems that for this holiday buying season the top motherboard, video card and CPU upgrades are as clear as they will be.
