John Hoek kreeg een mailing van de Duitse PC-Magazin waarin wordt gemeld dat Sony mogelijk een miljoenenclaim van de filmindustrie op haar dak krijgt omdat de DVD drives van de eerste PS2's eenvoudig regiovrij getweakt kunnen worden. Sony heeft de 'fout' inmiddels verholpen in een nieuwe revisie en overweegt (als ik dat goed lees, ik ben geen grote held in Duits) om de reeds verkochte PS2's terug te roepen:

Mit geringfuegigen Manipulationen ist es bei der Playstation II moeglich, die Laendercode-Funktion auszuschalten, die beim Abspielen von Spielfilm-DVDs dafuer sorgt, dass nur Silberscheiben aus der eigenen Region entschluesselt werden. Die in diesem Punkt aeusserst sensiblen Hollywood-Studios horchten sofort auf, denn eine Bedingung fuer die Freigabe von Filmtiteln auf DVD war, dass ein solcher Laendercode eingefuehrt wurde. Dass dieser Schutz bei der Playstation de facto fehlt, koennte zu Millionenklagen gegen den japanischen Konzern fuehren.

Entsprechend schnell reagierte Sony. Bereits in dieser Woche werden modifizierte Playstations ausgeliefert, an dessen Regionalcode-Schutz sich auch Hacker/Cracker die Zaehne ausbeissen sollen. Allerdings sind bereits weit mehr als eine Million Playstation-II-Konsolen mit der fehlerhaften Software im Umlauf. Sony ueberlegt deshalb, ob eine kostenintensive Rueckrufaktion gestartet werden soll, um den vielleicht noch teureren Klagen aus Hollywood zu entgehen.

Nu is het alleen nog de vraag welke idioot zijn Playstatin II hiervoor terug wil brengen.

Betanews schrijft dat er her en der op het internet nieuwe versies van Gnutella verschijnen, dit ondanks het trieste feit dat het Gnutella open source project van Nullsoft al enkele uren na de publieke release door grote baas AOL in de ban werd gedaan:

Despite AOL putting the brakes on Nullsoft's development of Gnutella, the newly created MP3 download tool, new versions of the client have begun to appear on the net. The open-source community has taken control and Gnutella clones are rapidly springing up. Chris Tom van AMD Zone en SlotA.com heeft een review gepost van de welbekende Epox 7KXA KX133 moederplank met 5xPCI, 1xISA, 1xAMR en 3xDIMM. In tegenstelling tot Anand, die kritiek uitte op de volgens hem beperkte stabiliteit van de 7KXA, ondervond Chris geen problemen met de werking van het bord. Ook het overklokken van de frontside bus verliep probleemloos tot 110MHz. Helaas is dit, naast een niet helemaal stabiele 115MHz, de enige setting boven 100MHz:

I tested for several days with both the Epox and 2 The Max. Quake Arena deathmatching with RC5 cracking in the back ground was a big part of the testing. I really had no big problems. The only time stability became an issue was when I overclocked my 500 to 750MHz. The sytem would run ok, but it would crash under heavy loads. Other than that it was solid. It's hard to blame the board for not being totally stable on a CPU overclocked 50%, but then again none of the other boards I tested exhibited this trait.

[...] Next I upped it to 115MHz. I got into windows fine, but it would not run as stable as I would like. I could not get Quake Arena to run without crashing at all. I thought it might be that the memory could not handle 148MHz, so I went into the bios and set the memory speed back down to the bus speed of the Athlon. At 115MHz for both the buses I had no stability problems.

Planet Multimedia meldt dat het aantal internet gebruikers in Nederland het afgelopen half jaar een record stijging van maar liefst 70% heeft doorgemaakt. Tussen september 1999 en maart 2000 werd door onderzoeksbureau Pro Active een toename van 2,75 naar 4,7 miljoen internetters gemeten:

Dit blijkt uit het onderzoek van de Nationale Internet Monitor. Het gaat hier om de gebruikers die tenminste 1 keer per twee weken surfen of e-mail lezen. We komen op een percentage van 74,1 procent, volledig te wijten aan de opkomst van toegangsaanbieders zonder abonnementskosten en daarop volgende verlaging van abonnementen door andere aanbieders.

[...] Het gemiddeld aantal dagelijkse gebruikers steeg met 66 procent of 1 miljoen tot 2,5 miljoen. De stijging bedroeg in het gehele jaar tot september 99 nog 600.000. Dus ook de intensiteit van het gebruik is tegelijkertijd met de komst van 'gratis' internet toegenomen. Volgens Liesbeth Hop, directeur van Pro Active, is dat niet enkel een gevolg van meer nieuwe gebruikers, maar ook van intensiever gebruik door internetters die al langer een abonnement hebben.

De mensen van Riva 3D hebben een klein artikeltje geschreven over de C van de TCL (transform, clipping and lighting) engine van de GeForce II, een feature die we waarschijnlijk ook te zien krijgen op de Ati Rage6.

Clipping is a process of eliminating surfaces and objects, and thereby polygons, from being rendered within a scene when they are hidden by other objects. Clipping is necessary for achieving playable frame rates in games. Without clipping, massive amounts of processing power would be wasted in rendering objects that you wouldn't see anyway. Imagine if it were necessary to render every object within a room if you were standing outside that room. Wasting that CPU time on unseen objects doesn't make sense, does it? Consequently, you'll get much faster frame rates by using clipping techniques within games.

Hardware Central heeft een review gepost van de Iwill SIDE RAID66 controller, die begin deze maand op de CeBIT werd aangekondigd. De SIDE RAID is de eerste IDE RAID controller die gebaseerd is op de HighPoint HPT368 controller en ondersteund de RAID levels 0, 1 en 0/1 in combinatie met maximaal 4 schijven. Uit de benchmarks van Hardware Central blijkt dat RAID 0 in realistische situaties een snelheidsvoordeel van rond de 11% op kan leveren:

RAID 0 is an excellent way to improve transfer rates and read and write speed. However, RAID 0 cannot lower seek and access times, which is something to consider before going the RAID 0 route. For heavy use of standard office applications or gaming, the best buy is a single drive with faster access. For other apps such as CAD or video editing, etc., then RAID 0 may be just the thing.

[...] As to Iwill’s sIDE RAID66 card, kudos to them for working to bring RAID to the masses. For a relatively small price, the sIDE RAID66 will push transfer rates through the roof.

The card is easy to install and configure, always a plus. Furthermore, the card's BIOS is flashable, leaving an open road for updates that could potentially improve performance even further.

UPC vraagt KPN om vergiffenis voor het feit dat zij middels valse verkooptrucs hebben getracht om KPN klanten weg te pikken. Het malafide verkoopbureau dat UPC in de arm had genomen lokte klanten door te vertellen dat KPN de activiteiten in de omgeving zou staken:

Verkopers vertelden dat KPN de activiteiten in de omgeving zou beëindigen. Voor de klant zat er dus niets anders op dan een telefoonabonnement via de kabelaar te nemen, was het betoog.

Het contract met de verkoper is inmiddels verbroken. "Dit is niet de manier waarop we onze producten willen verkopen", verzekert een UPC-woordvoerster. Behalve de rectificatie betaalt UPC de kosten voor klanten die terug willen op het telefoonnet van KPN.

Volgens onafhankelijk onderzoek is de mislukking van de Mars Polar Lander missie het gevolg van slecht functionerende remrakketjes. Deze bleken in het extreem koude space klimaat niet juist te onbranden waardoor zij onvoldoende performance gaven. De fout kwam pas enkele dagen voor de landing aan het licht en kon derhalve niet gefixt worden:

Nasa engineers knew about a fatal design flaw with the Mars Polar Lander's braking thrusters but kept it secret, leaked information claims. It follows persistent rumours that the disappearance of the MPL spacecraft last December was no surprise to Nasa officials.

[...] Tests apparently showed that the system used to ignite the craft's hydrazine fuel could not operate effectively at the cold temperatures expected during the flight to Mars. This would seriously have compromised the performance of the thrusters.

But rather than begin an expensive redesign and replacement program, an unnamed space official is said by the source to have altered the test conditions to make it look as though the engines would perform in the conditions expected.

According to the UPI news agency, senior Nasa officials only realised the flaw in MPL's thrusters a few days before the landing was to take place on 3 December - when it was too late to do anything about it.

Nine frontline staff at Cyrix's old HQ in Richardson, Texas, walked out yesterday after hearing that the CEO of Via wanted to spin off the CPU division of his company as a separate going concern.

According to sources in Richardson, Steve McMahan, former director of engineering, and eight other key people left the firm yesterday to join startup Navarro Networks, run by a former Cyrix vice president called Mark Bluhm.

Other sources told The Register this afternoon that the resignations included facilities and part time human resource (HR) managers, but that key people that had departed included the head of circuit design, the head of process engineering, the head of physical layout, and the person in charge of silicon validation.

4of9, Erwin en Nap schrijven dat de ISP's XS4ALL, Sonera en bArt worden bedreigd door de kabelexploitanten UPC en Casema omdat die een monopolie hebben op breedband internet en daar willen ze dus iets tegen gaan doen.

Staatssecretaris Van der Ploeg werkt momenteel aan een kabelnotitie. Daarin wordt onder meer geregeld dat kabelbedrijven niet mogen discrimineren bij de doorgifte van televisiezenders. Als het aan XS4ALL, Sonera en bArt ligt wordt een Open Network Privision (ONP) toegevoegd. Daarmee worden kabelexploitanten verplicht meerdere internetaanbieders toe te laten op hun netwerk.

In een persbericht schrijven de drie internetaanbieders dat de ONP er komt. Zij baseren dat nieuws op uitlatingen van mediastrateeg Peter Jelgersma tijdens een raadsvergadering vorige week in Amstelveen. Jelgersma is volgens het drietal ISP's adviseur van staatssecretaris Van der Ploeg. Dat is echter onjuist, zo bevestigt het ministerie van Onderwijs Cultuur en Wetenschappen. Het ministerie zegt wel dat Open Network Provision 'de aandacht heeft'.

Alle hoop van de drie internetaanbieders is gericht op de in mei te verschijnen kabelnotitie van Van der Ploeg. "Het is op dit moment vrijwel onmogelijk toegang af te dwingen tot kabelnetwerken vanwege het ontbreken van een juridisch kader", zo schrijven de providers. "De bevoegdheden van de Opta en de NMa zijn te onduidelijk om de monopolies van de kabelmaatschappijen te doorbreken."

ZDNet schrijft dat IBM haar DDR geheugen technologie heeft geïntroduceerd. IBM wil DDR SDRAM op termijn in al haar servers toe passen. Gisteren werd hier een begin mee gemaakt door de introductie van een aantal op DDR SDRAM gebaseerde NUMA-Q en Netfinity servers:

IBM Corp. on Tuesday introduced computer memory chips that deliver twice the amount of data to a microprocessor as current memory chips, addressing the bottleneck between processors and memory performance in servers.

[...] "This is a fundamental improvement that should improve the e-commerce environment," said IBM spokesman Phillip Bergman, who added that all IBM servers would use the DDR memory chips.

IBM's NUMA-Q and Netfinity servers will be the first servers -- based on Intel (Nasdaq: INTC) processors -- to be available with the new DDR memory, followed by the S/390, RS/6000 and AS/400 servers. [break] IBM is van mening dat DDR voor zowel servers als consumer PC's een betere oplossing is dan Rambus. Volgens The Register had deze uitlating tot gevolg dat de aandelenkoers van Rambus Inc. dinsdag sterk daalde: [/break] Shares in volatile memory company Rambus (ticker: RMBS) fell sharply on Wall Street again yesterday, aided and abetted by IBM, which has never really liked the firm, or the technology anyway.

IBM said it has a faster double data rate (DDR) chip under its corporate sleeves than the one Rambus and Intel are cajoling semiconductor manufacturers to produce. An IBM executive yesterday told financial wire Bloomberg that DDR was better than Rambus not only for servers, but for PCs too. [break] Rambus flipt momenteel als een jojo heen en weer. MindTwist schrijft dat de universiteit van Mexico en IBM samenwerken om een supercomputer de lucht in te krijgen. Als hardware gaan ze 64 IBM Netfinity 256 servers gebruiken en als OS gaan ze LINUX gebruiken! Deze computer kan denk ik ook wonderen gaan doen voor de DPC :

Los Lobos is a departure from the traditional supercomputer set-up. It's built from many smaller, industry standard computers -- 64 of IBM Netfinity 256 servers, specifically.

The Netfinity servers are linked together using special clustering software and high-speed networking hardware, which causes the separate units to act as one computer, delivering a processing speed of 375 gigaflops, or 375 billion operations per second.

Although Los Lobos is the fastest Linux supercomputer, it will only rank 24th on the list of the top 500 fastest supercomputers.

gdew schrijft dat Asus de beta bios versie 130 voor haar K7M bord heeft gepost.

Daarnaast kwam explorer me vertellen dat er voor Asus V6x00 GeForce kaarten nieuwe drivers gereleased zijn voor zowel Win9x (3.75 Beta 2) als Windows 2000 (3.79 Beta 4). Hieronder de release notes voor de Win9x versie:

IceStorm schrijft: "Bij SharkyExtreme hebben ze een vergelijking online gegooid tussen GeForce 32 mb DDR en de GeForce 64 mb DDR (van Dell). Hoewel er 64 mb inzit zijn de verschillen pas bij extreme instelling (Q3 1600x1200x32) echt merkbaar, ondanks dat zijn ze er bij Sharky best tevreden over (maar het blijft een Dell ).Je kan deze 64 MB GeForce's ook verwachten van de andere GeForce fabrikanten in de nabije toekomst, Absolute Multimedia heeft al aangekondigt om deze dingen te gaan produceren .

On the other hand, if you're stuck in the doldrums, or your 3D accelerator is aged over 12 months and feels as old as Burt Reynolds in Hooper then this card is certainly for you. It not only utilizes the most well-rounded, fastest and complete 2D/3D chip solution from NVIDIA but it also happens to improve upon the reference design and has a bit of extra 'oomph' over any other DDR GeForce 256 to date. With the extra 32MB of frame buffer memory you should be able to bump up that resolution and detail level to the max in some games using the Quake III: Arena engine and/or other 3D engines.

The extra 32MB of DDR memory is a great idea indeed and one which Dell has already told Sharky Extreme they are looking to pursue with the NV15 next time around… We are all looking forward to that. An NVIDIA NV15 with 128MB DDR-RAM, anyone? Any takers? Settle down and get in line…

De mannen van iXBT-Hardware brengen ons een review van de Microstar MS-6301, da's een Slot-1 i820 plank met de gevreesde Memory Translator Hub waarmee je het dure Rambus kan omzeilen en gewoon SDRAM kunt blijven gebruiken. Net als veel andere MSI plankjes wordt de MS-6301 ook uitgerust met het D-LED diagnostic system: 4 kleine lampies die tijdens het booten de hele tijd de status van de system bus weergeven waardoor problemen gemakkelijk te achterhalen zijn. Hieronder vast wat info over zijn overklokbaarheid, die helaas wat tegen viel:

MSI MS-6301 supports 13 FSB frequencies: 100, 105, 114, 120, 124, 133, 138, 143, 148, 150, 152, 155 and 160MHz. However, only a part of the listed values is available simultaneously: you may use only the frequencies lying under 133MHz or those over 133MHz depending on the FSB frequency, your CPU supports. For 100MHz processors there is a special jumper on the board. When set into a certain position, it allows considering them 133MHz ones.

Unfortunately, the problem with PCI is not the only disappointment. It is also impossible to manually set AGP frequency divider. Below 133MHz, it is always set to 2/3 and over this value - to 1/2. However, this is still not the end. Overclockers may be pretty upset with the fact that MSI MS-6301 doesn't allow changing the CPU core voltage in any way. But although the system bus may work at 133MHz, the memory can be still a 100MHz one, which is a certain consolation for poor overclockers. It means that you don't need to care about high quality PC133 SDRAM: the good old PC100 will be OK for that.

If you set the FSB frequency in BIOS Setup but the system does not get started for some reason (too much overclocked, for instance), you won't manage to improve the situation without opening the case. Clear FSB settings by means of pressing and holding "Insert" when turning on the PC, which is so typical for most mainboards with Award BIOS, does not work on MS-6301. There is a jumper instead, which allows booting the board with default settings. So, you will have a chance to enter BIOS Setup and change the wrong settings.

2. Windows 2000 TAPI is incompatible with any ATI video cards that have TV tuners. This would include the ATI-TV, the ATI-TV WONDER, and the ATI All-in-Wonder cards, according to Microsoft. They hope to add support later.
3. Microsoft says that if you use non-International Alphabet 5 characters in the names of Windows 2000 computers, the Certificate Services Setup won't work. They may fix this limitation in the future, but for now, stick to IA5 characters.
4. According to Microsoft, in Windows 2000 you should not have a fully qualified Domain Name System (DNS) computer name with more than 64 characters. If you do, Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) services are going to fail. In turn, that will cause failures in Enterprise Certificate Authority, domain controller and computer automatic enrollment, and IPSec enrollment.

Volgens KPN topman Paul Smits zullen internetters binnenkort niet meer hoeven te betalen voor de telefoontikken. KPN wil op korte termijn een vast tarief invoeren voor internetgebruik. KPN zelf beschikt inmiddels over 1,5 miljoen internetklanten, een getal dat maandelijks met 25.000 groeit. Het bedrijf wil in Europa tot de top drie van internetbedrijven behoren. Om dit doel te bereiken is KPN in de markt voor de overname van internetbedrijven. Binnenkort zal KPN in Duitsland actief worden als internetaanbieder.

Bij PC Extremist staan de specificaties en prijzen van de nieuwe Spessa CD-RW drives van Sony. Het gaat hier om vier 10x burners die zowel als interne als externe modellen leverbaar zijn in IDE of SCSI uitvoering:

It appears that the only difference between the drives is the software package - both include HP fast format, HP simple backup, Adaptec Direct CD and Easy CD Creator, Neato CD Labeler, and either Corel Print Office for the 9300i or ACID software for the 9310i.

If you’re thinking of doing an upgrade, or even the purchase of a whole new system today, we’d opt for an Intel 440BX or VIA 694X platform, as these two platforms currently offer the best price/performance ratio and will undoubtedly last you for another year or two. By that time, RDRAM may have matured along with the supporting chipsets, creating opportunities for the next upgrade or purchase.
