Bij CombatWorld is een klein verslag te vinden van een 3dfx Voodoo5 6000 kaart in actie tijdens de E3 beurs in Los Angeles. Ze kregen Quake 3 Arena te zien op een resolutie van 2048x1536 en het bleek nog bespeelbaar ook! Verder wordt er gemeld dat de V6-6000 in juli uit zou moeten komen voor de prijs van $600 dollar zoals we eerder al te horen kregen.

After a long day at E3 in Los Angeles. One of the best things I saw other then Lara Croft was the Voodoo5 6000. The card is supposed to be out in JULY and Nvidia is going to have a tuff time in the Video Card war against this beast. This Video card will definitely be the head of the market until The NV20 appears. 3dfx gave Mjr. Killer and I (Caveman) An after hour showing of the Voodoo5 6000 with a small handful of other people.

The V5 6000 was put together 3 days before so it could be seen at E3. The clock on the board still has to be moved. And the drivers are still Pre-beta. It has 4 VSA-100 chips with a fan on each. What really Surprised me was when they pulled the sheets back was the big power supply that sat on top of the computer. It also carried 128 mgs of SDRAM at 166mhz clock speed. I asked why not use DDR instead? They said they had to use SDRAM to keep the price down. The Price of the card will be around $600.

They showed us Quake3 at 2048x1536 that kept a very playable frame rate. The 2nd game was Nascar3 showing the deferences between anti-aliasing on and off. With it on I wasn't able to see any frame rate loss. Almost all the Jaggies disappeared (I think its almost impossible to get rid of all of them). There shouldn't even be a feature on this card to turn anti-aliasing off. Most of the games at the show ran a Nvidia GTS. The V5 6000 FSAA has took another step beyond!

Bij Hardwarerinfo.net is een Socket 370 'superkoelers' vergelijkingstest gepost tussen de Computernerd Fac7Alpha, de GlobalWin FFP32 en de Titan Majesty TTC-M1AB 'Golden Orb'. Hier een verhelderend stukkie uit de conclusie:

Welke nu de winnaar is? Dat hangt helemaal af van je wensen, iedere koeler heeft tenslotte zijn voor- en nadelen. Met wat geknutsel is er in sommige gevallen wel een mouw aan te passen, maar kortweg kunnen we zeggen dat de hier besproken GlobalWin koelers gemaakt lijken te zijn voor op een BP6 of elk ander moederbord in een bigtower. Veel power als je toch plek zat hebt en mooi goedkoop. De Computernerd Fac7Alpha heeft soortgelijke kwaliteiten maar is aanzienlijk duurder. Wel is de Fac7Alpha iets kleiner en daardoor wellicht in meer gevallen inzetbaar. De Titan Majesty heeft ook zo zijn kwaliteiten: lekker compact en een extreem goede koeler. Ideaal voor op een Socket 370 naar Slot 1 converter en vrijwel altijd inzetbaar, vaak ook in de kleinere kasten. Wil je de Titan Majesty op een BP6 dan moet er wat geknutseld worden, het kost je zo’n half uur tot een uur per koeler.

Ace's Hardware schrijft dat Acer Labs Inc. volgens een artikel van PC Week Taiwan VIA vervangt als de chipset partner van AMD. Door de problemen met de i820 chipset heeft de ontwikkeling en produktie van P6 chipsets momenteel de hoogste prioriteit voor VIA, waardoor de produktie van Athlon chipsets in het gedrang komt. Bovendien is VIA na de aankoop van Cyrix ook zelf processor fabrikant en daarmee een directe concurrent van AMD. Verwacht wordt dat ALI in juni een Athlon chipset zal aankondigen. Deze zal als eerst ondersteuning bieden voor DDR SDRAM:

Anyway, the bit from PC Week Taiwan that attracts my attention is the comment that ALI will replace VIA as AMD's major Athlon chipset partner in near future. Rumors have it that the relationship between VIA and AMD started deteriorating since VIA started its own CPU venture. VIA is also reportedly having trouble with its Socket-A product, even though VIA has been publicly saying that it can start mass producing Socket-A chipsets in June or July this year. Also the popularity of Athlon has been somewhat limited by the limited number of KX133 chipsets available. With Intel riding Rambust through one technical road bump after another, it is only understandable that VIA would focus its production mainly on the Apollo Pro 133A chipset. As such, it is speculated that AMD will find a stronger alliance in ALI for the months to come. Evidently AMD's upcoming mobile processors will be paired with ALI's chipset, not VIA's according to PC Week.

Zoals al eerder gemeld heeft Napster een dikke 300.000 gebruikers geblocked die door Metallica geïdentificeerd waren als illegale verspreiders van hun muziek. Gedupeerden kunnen echt redelijk eenvoudig weer terug op de Napster servers nadat er wat gesleuteld is in het register en Beta5 weer terug is gezet. North Carolina ophthamologist Pat Dennis uses Napster to download oldies -- Bob Dylan, the Beatles, early Bruce Springsteen -- music he has on vinyl. His wife prefers soul music and country.

Their 15-year-old son, Seth, who turned the rest of the family on to Napster, is the Metallica fan.

The younger Dennis suspected his name might be among those Metallica produced as evidence that Napster users were downloading copyrighted music. Sure enough, when Dennis clicked into Napster on Wednesday, a dialogue box popped up to say the Napster Beta 6 upgrade was being loaded onto his computer.

He waited until installation was complete, and immediately got the message that he'd been banned.

Dennis said he tried to uninstall Beta 6 and reinstall the old version. He tried logging on with a different user name. No go.

The teen said he deleted everything in his Windows 98 registry that contained the word "Napster." He still could not log on under a new user name. So he reinstalled Beta 5. Bingo.

De mensen van Xtreme Tek hebben een review online gezet van het THX certified speakersetje van Klipsch, de ProMedia V.2-400. Het systeem bestaat uit een subwoofer en 4 satellites. Over de kwaliteit van dit (zeer strak ontworpen) setje waren ze zeer te spreken, over de prijs wat minder:

It's hard to say how well these speakers perform for their price. I have a stereo in the livingroom that hits a lot harder with its two 15's. Of course those weren't $250. For computer speakers, I'd say these are about the best you can get without doing it yourself or paying a hell of a lot. They have a very professional design, which is a very nice edition to any computer. You can hook them up to just about anything too, I connected them to my portable CD player to make it "not so portable" and they still sounded great. The ProMedias are quite easy to connect, and (if necessary) you can easily remove the stand which the satellites sit upon. To me, they were definately worth the money. WinAmp has been on almost constantly since the day I purchased them. Rockets and explosions no longer sound weak in games. The subwoofer makes the low pitch sounds wonderful, and the satellites put out perfectly clear high and mid-range sound.

Bij VIAHardware.com is de zoveelste review te vinden van de Abit KA7. Zoals iedereen is ook VIAHardware zeer goed te spreken over dit moederbord:

The Abit KA7 is one of the finest motherboards I have had the privilege to work on. It has all the features that any hardware fan could ask for as well as being a good overclocker, as far as Athlon motherboards go. If you have a older based AMD 750 motherboard with out super bypass enabled this may be a good upgrade. The addition of AGP 4x, PC133 memory support, good overclocking could deem it a good upgrade. If you are putting together a Athlon system today, the Abit KA7 is one motherboard you should consider. However the Duron and Thunderbird processors are right around the corner and it is still unknown if current KX133 motherboards will work with them.

Tom heeft een paar pagina's met tekst (wat moet er anders op...) online gezet waar hij het heeft over de problemen met de MTH en dan voornamelijk over de problemen die de producenten (Asus) van i820 moederborden met de MTH hebben:

Asus can reimburse customers who want to return their i820 w/MTH motherboards and will get the money back from Intel later on. However, it isn't quite as easy to define the amount.

Many people bought their Asus-motherboard unknowingly with their system. You cannot quite expect that every owner of a computer system is able to take out his motherboard, bring it back and put in a new one. Thus those people need support. Either the OEM/system integrator is taking back the whole system and replaces it with a i820 w/RDRAM or somebody has to go to the customer and replace the board for him. This is costing HUGE amounts of money.

Asus sold only few i820 motherboards that did not come with MTH, because most of their customers did not want to pay the ridiculous premium for RDRAM. Thus the production of those boards is very low. Now exactly these boards are required as the replacement for the MTH-motherboards. If thousands of people are contacting Asus right now, which certainly is the case, then how is Asus supposed to have those hundred thousands of MTH-free i820 motherboards available for the replacement?

As you know from my initial article, the replacement includes an i820 board without MTH and the required RDRAM as well. Currently there is hardly enough RDRAM available to fill the demand for the replacements. Intel has assured Asus that it will supply the RDRAM for the replacement procedure, but right now Asus doesn't have several hundred thousand RDRAM RIMMs available.

boer Krelis schrijft dat er een onderzoek is geweest waarbij ze 3500 mensen hebben gevraagt of ze internet hadden en of ze een dag geleden nog een vriend bezocht hadden. Wat blijkt: van de mensen met internet had 72% nog iemand bezocht en de mensen zonder maar 61% :

Internet users are not sad and lonely social misfits but actually visit and contact relatives and friends more frequently than those who live their lives offline.

The results contradict other surveys which have found that using the internet encourages social isolation.

But Dr Adam Joinson, a psychologist at the Open University, told BBC News Online that the results of the study backed up research he was carrying out into the social effects of internet use.

[...] In February a survey conducted by Stanford University psychologists found that regular surfers neglect friends and family to spend time online. The study showed that the more hours people use the Internet, the less time they spend in contact with real human beings.

But the results of the Pew Internet survey imply the opposite. It found that the more ways people have to communicate with friends and families, the more often they do so. The survey found that internet users do not just e-mail friends more, they also tend to phone or visit them more regularly.

Lee Rainie, the Pew project's director, said e-mail did not bring families and friends closer together because they already knew each other well. He said the important finding was the increase in contact that net use promoted.

The Ghost meldt dat Sonera lekker bezig is geweest, een server van hun had het begeven waarbij de 250 websites gewist werden en daarna hadden ze ook nog wat problemen met de backup, waarop ze toen maar een backup van december vorig jaar gebruikt hebben :

Een WebWereld-lezer deed zijn beklag. Enkele sites van zijn sitedesign- en beheerbedrijf uit Utrecht zijn verdwenen. Dat is nog niet het ergste. De back-up die Sonera terugzette is van december vorig jaar. Allemaal verouderde bestanden dus. Alle CGI-scripts moeten bijvoorbeeld opnieuw worden ingesteld en webpagina's moeten worden bijgewerkt.

Sonera erkent het probleem. Volgens een woordvoerster Yvette d'Hamecourt betreft het een opeenhoping van technische mankementen. "De harde schijf van de server was gecrasht, vervolgens bleek de meest recente back-up corrupt", aldus de woordvoerster. De schijf met de back-up zou nu bij een gespecialiseerd bedrijf in Noorwegen liggen voor herstel.

Alle klanten hebben dus een oude back-up gekregen. "Het varieert van enkele weken oud tot enkele maanden", aldus d'Hamecourt. De Sonera-server klapte er op donderdag uit. Het gaat om rachel.multiweb.nl. Deze server behoort toe aan internetaanbieder Multiweb, sinds vorig jaar onderdeel van Sonera.

Onder hetzelfde motto als de vorige post: beter laat dan nooit . GamePC heeft een tijdje geleden een interessant artikel geschreven over overklokken, hieronder een blurp uit een stukje waar ze uitleggen waarom je CPU soms vreemd gaat doen op een te hoge snelheid:

Below is a typical high-speed digital clock. You can clearly see the edges of the clock. Overshoot and undershoot are artifacts caused by the fact that while this is a digital process it is taking place in an analog world, and at high speeds it is difficult to make a transistor stable quickly (thus the need for setup and hold times). The real danger here is the ringback. Ringback can cause false data triggers and errors. If one of these errors occurred in a critical part of the CPU, then a lock-up occurs. Typically as speed increases, overshoot and undershoot increase, along with ringback. When ringback starts to interrupt the functions of the CPU, you get instability.


Another problem occurs as clock speeds increase. As we see below, a "shelf" starts to form on the waveform due to capacitance and impedance mismatches. These effects are also enhanced as the silicon heats up. So, good cooling (ie fan and air flow) are very important. You can see the areas marked V6 and V7 on the figure below show where the voltage stutters in transition. Again, double clocking of data can occur at this point (obviously, setup and hold times have been violated as well), if the stutter is large enough.

Beter laat dan nooit, twee dagen geleden heeft AnandTech hun review van de Asus V7700 GeForce2 online gezet. Dit kaartje heeft iets wat (bijna) onmisbaar is voor tweakers: een Winbond chippie samen met de sensors om de core temperatuur, fan speed en voltages in de gaten te houden :

With a sticker price of 349.99, the V7700 is priced along side with its main competitor, the ELSA GLADIAC. The software bundle of the V7700 is a bit weak, featuring the same 2 games and software DVD decoder as found in the earlier V6600 cards. These games remain for the most part useless for such a powerful video card. In addition do not let the "12 game titles" tag on the box fool you: these are 12 game demos. 2D image quality is what we expect of a GeForce card, meaning that it is roughly equivalent to the ELSA GLADIAC 2D wise.

What the V7700 lacks in software bundle it makes up for with hardware monitoring. By embedding a Winbond chip to an unused portion of the card, ASUS has produced a power computer user's dream. No more guessing how hot your chip is running using your finger or estimating the RPM of the fan by counting the number of times it spins per second. All this information and more can be found at the very useful SmartDoctor utility. Also included with this utility is a dynamic overclocking option which clocks down the core and memory speed when idle and cranks the speed back up when it is needed.

The choice of which GeForce 2 GTS card to get now is a tough one that depends on your personal preferences. If you plan to keep your video card for a long time and would like the reassurance of a 6-year warrantee, the ELSA GLADIAC is the card for you. In addition, the custom software bundle is good for those who are lacking 3D games now. On the other hand, if you are a power user who wants to be able to experience the greatest level of tweakabilty and information, the ASUS V7700 is your best bet. A tough decision, and one that will only get harder in the upcoming weeks with so many GeForce 2 GTS cards on the way.

AnandTech concludeert dan ook dat deze kaart tot nu toe de beste GeForce2 kaart is die je als power user (cq tweaker) in de winkel kan vinden.

De prijzen van Ace's Hardware komen van een Noorse winkel, je kan dus verwachten dat dit ongeveer dezelfde prijs is als je in Nederland moet gaan betalen.

Hete Hardware heeft wat benchmarks gemaakt van hun met nieuwe drivers uitgeruste Voodoo5 5500. Ze hebben de resultaten van de vorige drivers jammer genoeg niet in hetzelfde grafiekje gezet, maar kijkend naar hun oude preview kan je zien dat er bij elke resolutie zo'n 3-6 frames per seconde bij komen :

First let's look at the performance of our new drivers and prerelease board, across various resolutions with and without FSAA. We are told that our specific card will be representative of the exact same product you will receive if you buy a card in the coming weeks via the retail channel. Also, the drivers we are testing here are the "Gold" Release Version that will be packed in with the V5-5500 retail product. [...] Well folks, we have seen it all now. From pre-release to final release product, the Voodoo5-5500 has impressed us an exceptional 3D Graphics Accelerator. BrZ meldt dat t-break een review heeft gemaakt van de Creative GeForce2. Het kaartje heeft geen bijzondere opties en is IMHO dan ook niet interessant tenzij deze kaart erg snel in Nederland te vinden is of je heilig geloofd in Creative :

The 3D Blaster GeForce2 GTS reminds me a lot of the original GeForce 256. It was the fastest chip when it came out, but showed its excellence at higher resolutions. The drivers were not matured, the price-tag was heavy and Creative didn't bundle it with much software or hoo-haa like TV Out. Similarly, there's no denying that the GeForce 2 GTS is the fastest Graphics chip for gamers today. Again, it really starts showing its powers at higher resolutions, which by today's standards are of 1280x1024x32 or higher. But tell me, how many people actually play games at that resolution? I don't. I usually play at 1024x768x32, or occasionally at 1152x864x32. I doubt if I even switch my desktop above 1152x864 except for benchmarking.

Part of the reason for doing so is because I have a 17" monitor and refresh rates for resolutions above 1152x864 aren't very comfortable to the eye. I'm guessing that most of you have 17" monitors as well. And judging from the benchmarks, we can see that the GeForce PRO is close-enough to the GeForce 2 GTS for resolutions of 1152x768x32 and 1024x768x32. If you play games at resolutions below that, there is NO difference between the GeForce 2 and GeForce PRO.

I know that with time, people will switch to 19" Monitors and drivers for the GeForce 2 GTS will mature resulting in faster frame rates for all resolutions. And with time, prices for the GeForce 2 GTS will drop as well. Keep in mind that the new Voodoos are right around the corner so we might see the two giants battling for supremacy by cutting prices rapidly. Now that, would be a good time to buy a new Graphics card.

BrZ meldt dat HardwareCentral een lapje tekst heeft geschreven over de ATi Radeon, naast al de info die we al lang weten over pixel tapestry en charisma weten ze ook te vertellen dat er een dual versie komt .

Though ATI has not officially announced any specific products utilizing the RADEON 256 chip, we were able to confirm that it will indeed be releasing a multi-chip version using the same alternate frame rendering technology developed for the Rage 128 MAXX. As with the Rage 128 MAXX, the fill rate of the dual-chip RADEON 256 will be double that of the single chip solution. One of the limitations of the Rage 128 MAXX is that only the fill-rate increases; the geometry processing still all being done by the CPU. The dual-chip configuration of the Radeon will not only benefit from double fill rate, but also double geometry processing. This means that the Radeon will effectively have a fill-rate of 3 GigaTexels and transform up to 60 million triangles per second!

The other benefit of the dual chip version of the Radeon is that dual-monitor output will be possible since each Radeon chip will have its own memory and fully functional 2D subsystem.

You might think that, like the Rage 128 MAXX, the RADEON 256 will not come out until six months after the release of the single chip solution. However, since the multl-chip technology is already developed, implementing it second time around will be much easier. ATI assured us that the RADEON 256 MAXX will hit the shelves approximately 3 months after the release of the single chip solution. This will put it directly between the RADEON 256 single chip and ATI’s next generation chip coming out in the winter, 6 months after the summer release of its next product.

Om dit even kort samen te vatten: ATi Radeon wordt waarschijnlijk een top kaart en de ATi Radeon Maxx wordt gewoon 2x zo goed .

Gisteren zijn we vierde voor de dag geëindigd met een totaal van 594.923 blokken. Dat is niet slecht voor een zaterdag, maar ondanks dat bleven we toch nog zo'n 98.000 blokken achter op AnandTech en Russian Team en bijna 118.000 op /.

Ace's Hardware schrijft dat de nieuwe Athlon 900's geleverd worden met 2,8ns SRAM chips. Dit is prettig nieuws voor overklokkers, want dankzij deze snelle chips kan de Athlon core bij een 1/3 cache divider tot 1070MHz geklokt worden alvorens de cache chips een probleem kunnen vormen. Ook blijken er Athlon 700's met een 900MHz core en snelle 2,8ns cache chips in de omloop te zijn:

Equipped with these faster SRAMs, the latest Slot-A Athlons (K75) could potentially be great overclockers. For users with what might now be considered "dead-end" Slot-A KX133 motherboards, this could be seen as a light at the end of the tunnel for those looking to maximize on their current investment.

Heise Online meldt dat de Thunderbird en Duron op 5 juni tijdens de Computex in Taiwan worden gereleased. De Thunderbird wordt geïntroduceerd op snelheden van 750MHz tot 1GHz en beschikt over 128KB L1 cache en 256KB L2. De low-end Duron processor heeft 64KB L2 cache en wordt in versies van 500, 600, 650 en 700MHz uitgebracht:

Nach Informationen der c't-Redaktion wird AMD die nächste Athlon-Prozessorgeneration am 5. Juni zur Eröffnung der Computex in Taiwan vorstellen: den Thunderbird mit 750 MHz bis 1 GHz Taktfrequenz und 128 KByte L1- sowie 256 KByte integriertem L2-Cache und die Lowcost-Version Duron (Codename Spitfire) mit 700 MHz und ebenfalls 128 KByte L1-, aber nur 64 KByte L2-Cache. Der kleinere L2-Cache ergibt Sinn, wenn er als so genannter Exclusive oder Victim Cache wie beispielsweise beim Cyrix-III ausgeführt ist.

Op de Computex worden tevens de eerste Socket A mobo's voorgesteld. Van ALI wordt in Juni de eerste Athlon chipset verwacht en VIA werkt aan de Pro266 (P6) chipset. Beiden ondersteunen DDR SDRAM.
