The Register heeft weer een sappig verhaaltje voor het slapen gaan. In een interview in de Finacial Times levert de CEO van Intel, Craig Barrett, een flinke lading ongezouten kritiek op Rambus. In het interview zegt Barrett onder andere dat het dom was om te vetrouwen op de technologie van één bedrijf wat de performance van hun producten maakt of breekt. Verder levert hij kritiek op de oorlog van Rambus tegen de chipbakkers om zo geld binnen te halen. Ondanks deze stevige kritiek zal de Intel Rambus relatie voorlopig nog wel voortduren aangezien Intel verplicht is om te komen met ondersteuning voor deze geheugenstandaard bij de Pentium 4:

In an interview published in The Financial Times, Barrett admitted: "We made a big bet on Rambus and it did not work out." He said that it had been a mistake to rely on another company for technology that "gates your performance".

In the interview he also slams Rambus's policy of suing its competitors. "We hoped we were partners with a company that would concentrate on technology rather than seeking to collect a toll from other companies."

However unhappy Intel may be with the situation it finds itself in, it is not one it can back out of easily. Chipzilla is contractually obliged to support Rambus with the P4 processor, due on the market (some would say over due) next month.

Bij Dan's Data is een vergelijking verschenen over een stapel bijzondere CD-R's. Er wordt gekeken naar een aantal aparte CD's waaronder niet spiegelde zwarte exemplaren en exemplaren met regenboog kleuren. Een echte conclusie over welke CD-R’s je moet kopen wordt niet getrokken, maar er wordt wel gezegd dat het verstandig is om wat duurdere CD-R's te kopen als je graag wilt dat de data lang blijft leven of als je op hoge snelheden fikt. Als dat niet zo'n prioriteit heeft zijn cd's met een schattig kleurtje ook leuk :

If your data isn't particularly valuable - you're giving a pile of digital camera pictures to a friend, you're burning a compilation disc for the car, you're sending a slab of files to a desktop publishing output bureau that'll have finished the job in a few days - then the quality of the discs you choose isn't very important. Since discs that aren't obvious duds are only likely to fail in a few years time, there's no reason to use a "premium" disc for these purposes.

If you're making important backups, burning your band's new album to send to the mastering plant or taking mission-critical data overseas, though, crack open the wallet and drop another dollar per disc and you may save yourself a lot of pain.

When total quality is not your top priority, though, pink and black and twinkly discs certainly liven up one's day.

De goede mensen van Guru3D hebben een review geschreven van de ATi Radeon 64MB DDR. We weten inmiddels al dat de Radeon t.o.v. de GeForce2 wat meer features aan boord heeft, zoals 4-matrix vertex skinning, gebruik van drie texture units per pipeline en HyperZ. Bovendien heeft de Radeon ook volledige DirectX 8 ondersteuning. Dit komt ten dele uit in de benchmarks; in 16-bit is de Radeon langzamer dan de GeForce2, maar in 32-bit is de Radeon gelijk, of zelfs sneller dan zijn concurrent.

Ook deze reviewer durft geen uitspraak te doen over de GeForce2/Radeon discussie; de kaarten hebben beiden hun eigen voor- en nadelen. De Radeon biedt veel mogelijkheden, maar deze worden lang niet allemaal benut.

One thing is for sure, the Radeon is ahead of it's time, this is a bad thing, or a good thing depending on how you look at it. The Radeon is packed with features, yet most have to be implemented by game developers in order for them to be taken advantage of, and in any case, it will be a long time before we see them becoming standard. Integrated hardware T&L for example, is being supported by dozens of games so far, and is becoming more and more standard, but we still haven't seen any games with 3 textures per pixel, and until we do, the Radeon will be crippled and it's potential untapped.

[...] Personally I find it hard to tell which is better, the Geforce or the Radeon, since each have their distinct advantages, and this makes it very hard for us to select which card we would recommend. Yet, the good part is that there is no bad purchase since both are winners. It's very nice to have competition and a wider range of video cards on the market to suit personal tastes. It all encourages technology improvement.

Bij Clubic (brrr, een Franse site...) is een review verschenen over de Hercules 3D Prophet II Pro. De 3D Prophet II Pro is gebaseerd op de GeForce2 Pro en is dus in het bezit van een normale 200MHz core, maar heeft wel sneller geheugen wat standaard op 400MHz werkt. Met deze specificaties valt hij dus tussen de normale GeForce2 met 333MHz geheugen en de GeForce2 Ultra met geheugen wat op 460MHz loopt. De benchmarks bij Clubic bevestigen dit ook, op de hogere resoluties waar de processor niet meer de bottleneck is zit de performance van de 3D Prophet II Pro heel mooi tussen die van de standaard GeForce2 en die van de GeForce2 Ultra in. Ook de prijs van deze kaart zal ruwweg tussen die van normale GeForce2 en die GeForce2 Ultra in komen te liggen (ca. 400 dollar).

Deze kaart is dus geschikt voor de mensen die wat boven de grijze massa met normale GeForce2 kaarten uit willen steken, maar daar geen Ultra prijs voor over hebben. Jammer genoeg is deze kaart niet zoals velen gehoopt hadden een soort van goedkope Ultra aangezien je per dollar ongeveer evenveel snelheid krijgt:

La 3D Prophet II Ultra et 3D Prophet Pro, respectivement commercialisées aux prix de 4990 FF TTC et de 3490 FF TTC sont clairement destinées aux joueurs fortunés qui souhaitent acquérir ce qui se fait de mieux sur le marché des cartes graphiques en terme de rapidité. Toutefois le choix d’une 3D Prophet II Ultra au détriment d’une 3D Prophet II Pro est plus que discutable puisque la différence de performances entre les deux cartes n’est vraiment visible qu’en très hautes résolutions (1600*1200*32 bits). Une différence qui a un prix certain : 1500 FF ! On réservera donc la 3D Prophet II Ultra aux joueurs très fortunés, déjà équipés d’un processeur puissant (supérieur à 750 Mhz) et d’un écran 19 pouces (au minimum) de qualité pour pouvoir jouer en 1600*1200 dans de bonnes conditions.

Les joueurs exigeants et un tant soit peu fortunés qui ne peuvent satisfaire toutes les conditions citées ci-dessus pourront se tourner vers la 3D Prophet II Pro, qui n’a finalement pas à rougir en face de la 3D Prophet II Ultra.

Oké, na deze conclusie die waarschijnlijk bijna niemand begrepen heeft maar een paar Quake3 benchmarks om de zooi grafisch te illustreren:

De mannen va CDR-Info hebben een review gebakken over de nieuwe Plextor PlexWriter 12/10/32S. Deze SCSI brander heeft evenals zijn IDE broertje de beschikking over burn-proof technologie om foute cd's door buffer underruns tot het verleden te laten horen. Het SCSI model presteert zoals te verwachten was ongeveer evengoed als de IDE versie, en die is alles behalve slecht. De PlexWriter 12/10/32S is dus zeker een aanrader, maar of de meerprijs van 100 dollar boven het IDE model gerechtvaardigd is zal ieder voor zich uit moeten maken:

The PleXWriter PX-W1210S is currently one of the best technology equipped CDR-W drive. The PX-W1210S is the only drive ,for now, that includes the improved "BURN-Proof" technology. Don't forget that soon after, other manufacturers will also ship drives with the improved "BURN-Proof" version. The drive produced nearly no flaws to its reading/writing performance even when compared to the famous best selling Plextor PX-W1210A (ATAPI model). The drive delivers 12x writing, 10x re-writing and 32x reading.

We think that the facts are clear for the possible buyer, which has to choose between the Plextor PX-W1210A and the PX-W1210S. The known SCSI vs. IDE model war continues. Even both drive share some components they have different philosophy. The PX-W1210S refers directly to users with lot of expectations as well to professionals. The 4MB of buffer and the cooling fan makes the drive ideal for 12x replicator towers and that is something definitely Plextor thought when designed the drive.

Don't forget that the PX-W1210S will have increased price compared to the PX-W1210A. As we heard the recommended end-userprice (MSRP) is $379, when the PX-W1210A costs around 250$. On the other hand, the PX-W1210A is pointed to the user who enters the CD area and wants to buy an affordable, fast and easy to install drive and have a low price. Both drives will not let you down at the most tasks you will probably ever face to your burning "life".

Bij BE-news is een vergelijking gemaakt van de performance van de ATi Radeon in Windows98 en BeOs. Ook is met een VooDoo2 een vergelijking gemaakt, wat vooral moet aangeven in hoeverre de drivers zijn verbeterd.

As you can see, ATI performs very well under BeOS. In fact, it performs exceptionally well, despite the lack of AGP support and the fact that the beta mtrr kernel we received had its own bugs...

This article is not a plug for ATI's products. However, there's no denying that the Radeon is the card to buy for BeOS. It beats Windows hands down. Moreover, I didn't even use an SSE CPU (P3, P4, Celeron 2), where BeOS and its OpenGL implementation performs even better thanks to specific SSE optimizations.

Voor de verandering dus niet een simpele vergelijking van WindowsME met Windows98SE oid, maar echt twee heel verschillende besturingssystemen. Onnodig te zeggen dat in BeOs betere prestaties behaald werden (de makers van de vergelijking vinden BeOs sowieso een beter besturingssysteem, waardoor de geloofwaardigheid misschien wat minder is, maar de resultaten liegen er niet om!)

Gisteren zat DPC weer wat onder de 2,5 miljoen blokjes helaas... maar, er joinden wel 21 mensen, dus die 2,5M halen we zo weer!

Gamers Depot heeft een review geschreven over de Creative Annihilator 2 Ultra. Deze kaart is voorzien van 64MB DDR geheugen op 460MHz terwijl de core zijn werk doet op 250MHz. De Creative wordt met weinig extra's geleverd. Handig is echter wel het programma BlasterControl, hiermee kun je vanuit de systray direkt settings wijzigen zonder eerst naar het configuratiescherm te hoeven gaan. Verder is ook het programma LAVA! bijgesloten. De Creative Annihilator onderscheidt zich qua snelheid niet van andere GeForce2 Ultra kaarten zo bewijst de test. De Elsa Gladiac Ultra en het nVidia GeForce2 Ultra reference model scoren in alle tests vrijwel gelijk aan de Creative kaart. Het is dan ook de lagere prijs en het handige BlasterControl dat kopers moet doen besluiten te kiezen voor de Creative Annihilator 2 Ultra:

Again, we have a very nice card based around the GeForce2 Ultra. The price doesn’t assault our senses as much as with the Gladiac Ultra, but it still smarts a bit. Once more, it’s up to you to decide if $200 - $300 more is worth it for a video card, i'll bet it's one that kicks butt.

Minister De Vries van Binnenlandse Zaken vindt dat de Grondwet aangepast moet worden, zodat e-mail ook onder het briefgeheim valt. Voor moderne communicatiemiddelen zoals fax en internet, geldt er op dit moment nog geen briefgeheim. De aanpassing is ingrijpend, aldus de PvdA-bewindsman. Maar het is noodzakelijk om vast te leggen dat iedereen het recht heeft vertrouwelijk te communiceren. De Vries volgt hiermee het advies van de commissie-Franken, die een half jaar geleden aan het kabinet rapporteerde:

De commissie adviseerde de Grondwet aan te passen aan het moderne informatietijdperk. Zo beschermt artikel 13 van de Grondwet het brief-, telefoon- en telegraafgeheim, maar staat er niets over e-mail of fax. Communicatie moet altijd vertrouwelijk zijn, ongeacht via welk medium dat gebeurt, zo stelde de commissie.

In de praktijk betekent dit dat derden alleen mogen kijken in e-mail na toestemming van de rechter. Als de nationale veiligheid op het spel staat, kan ook de minister van Binnenlandse Zaken toestemming geven het briefgeheim te schenden.

Plextor heeft vandaag aangekondigd dat de SCSI versie van de 12/10/32 PlexWriter nu in de winkels te vinden moet zijn. De 12/10/32S PlexWriter heeft dezelfde features als de IDE versie, en is dus in het bezit van de geliefde burn-proof technologie om mislukte CD’s door buffer underruns tot het verleden te laten behoren. De fikker heeft een lieve brand snelheid van 12 speed, een herbrand snelheid van 10 speed en ook het lezen gaat relaxed op 32 speed :

Electic Tech schrijft dat Fujitsu vandaag de MPG3xxxAT/H lijn van hardeschijven heeft aangekondigd. Deze hardeschijven hebben een plattergrootte van 20,4GB tenzij je een 30GB of 10GB model hebt waar de grootte respectievelijk 15GB en 10GB is. De hardeschijven komen beschikbaar in het 5400 en het 7200rpm smaakje en zijn uitgerust met een ATA-100 interface. Fujitsu claimt een piek doorvoer snelheid van 60,7MB per seconde en een seektime van 8.5ms. De schijven komen dit jaar nog op de markt, de 5400rpm versie in oktober en de 7200rpm versie later in het jaar 2000:

Cookie schrijft: "Intel heeft snel gereageerd op de aangekondigde prijsverlagingen van AMD, zo valt te lezen op de nieuwspagina van de Duitse THG-site. Per 29 oktober worden de prijzen van Intel CPU's variërend van 5% tot 36% verlaagd. Tevens worden 2 nieuwe Celeron processoren aan het rijtje toegevoegd met als klok- frequentie respectievelijk 733MHz en 766Mhz. Onderstaande groothandelsprijzen gelden zoals gebruikelijk bij een afname per 1.000 stuks.":

Systemlogic heeft het artikel "The Fundamentals Of Cache" online gezet. Caches worden steeds belangrijker voor de moderne datahongerige processors, die gevoed moeten worden door de relatief extreem trage RAM geheugenchips. Er is onder andere geschreven over verschillende technieken van cachen, de geschiedenis van caches en voorbeelden uit bestaande processors:

So enough already, you say, what's the bottom line? How is cache helping my framerate in Quake 3 Arena? Well, it turns out that there are still some more important concepts that we have to cover first. Firstly, there's a term in computer science / computer architecture known as locality of reference: Programs tend to reuse data and instructions they have used recently. A widely held rule of thumb is that a program spends [about] 90% of its execution time in only [about] 10% of the code (Hennessy and Patterson, 38). Well, if a processor is only using 10% of the code most of the time, why not keep that information really close to the processor so that it can get access to that information the fastest? That's exactly what cache is used for.

Een aanrader voor mensen die bij hun favoriete computershop de verkoper willen afbluffen met termen als "8-way Set Associative Cache" . Bedankt yam'ha voor de tip.

Hardwarecentral heeft een uitgebreide preview in elkaar gezet van een Micron Hurricane moederbord met Samurai chipset. Gewapend met een Pentium III 800MHz en 128MB PC2100 DDR geheugen is het platform vergeleken met PC133 SDRAM en PC800 RDRAM. Helaas was dit sample moederbord extreem onstabiel. De processor moest ondergeclocked worden naar 600MHz om hem een beetje werkbaar te maken (dat hebben ze uiteraard bij de rest van de borden ook gedaan ), bovendien werkte de ATA/66 controller niet goed. Nieuwe drivers van Micron hielpen iets, maar nog steeds was het onmogelijk Quake III of 3DMark 2000 te draaien zonder een crash:

We realize this all sounds like we might not have tried hard enough to get the platform up and running stable, but you can rest assured that we’ve consulted Micron and the manufacturers of all of the other peripherals to see if we can come up with a solution, either by a change in system configuration, driver updates or even a BIOS upgrade. Unfortunately none of the fixes, driver updates, nor the switch to other peripherals proved successful. We’ve spend nearly two weeks trying to get it up and running stable and with consistent benchmark scores, unfortunately it continued failing where the other platforms passed, thus we could not validate the benchmark results, as we’re trying to do an objective evaluation, and have to be stringent about it.

De benchmarks die wel draaiden beloofden echter veel goeds: het preproductie bord, dat ook nog eens de handicap had dat de harde schijf niet sneller dan 3500KB/s wilde lezen, scoorde slechts 1, 3 en 8 punten lager in SysMark2000 dan respectievelijk de VIA Apollo 133A, Intel 440BX en Intel i820 (RDRAM) chipsets, die allemaal wel de volle 18MB/s uit de harde schijf konden trekken.
