Tim Sweeney is werkzaam bij Epic Games waar hij onder andere mee heeft gewerkt aan Unreal, en waar hij nu weer bezig is met het vervolg ervan. Hij laat zich in een vraaggesprek op Voodoo Extreme uit over de Kyro II videochip, en dan vooral over de mogelijkheden die deze biedt. Tim vergelijkt hem met de TNT2 en vindt dat er niet echt sprake is van een vooruitgang. Diverse gangbare DirectX 7 routines ondersteunt de Kyro II bijvoorbeeld niet. De kaart is te laat gekomen en zal de gamer weinig kunnen bieden met het oog op toekomstige games, aldus Tim:

Tim - I'm really looking forward to ATI's upcoming hardware. All developers nowadays are targetting DirectX8, so whenever a developer talks about some cool new thing they're doing on GeForce3, it will generally carry over to all DirectX8 class hardware.

Ps - What's your take on the kyro2 and tile based rendering?

Tim - It's a competent TNT2 class chip, and the sorting and alpha-testing artefacts of past generations seem to have been sorted out successfully. But, like every generation of PowerVR hardware before it, it's a day late and a dollar short. It lacks support for basic DirectX7 (yes, 7!) features like cube maps. The kyro developers are cool guys, so it pains me to say that this is just not a viable piece of hardware in the market it's trying to compete in.

Op dit moment heeft alleen de Inspiron 8000 nog maar deze chipset aan boord, maar er zullen snel meerdere types volgen. Eerder kon je hier al wat benchmarks vinden van de GoForce2 Go t.o.v. ATi's Rage Mobility 128. Dit is aldus nVidia de eerste GPU die "mobile gaming" ècht mogelijk maakt.

NEC kondigt twee nieuwe notebook-computers aan op basis van Transmeta's TM5600 Crusoe-processor, de NEC Versa DayLite en de NEC Versa UltraLite.

Meest opvallende exemplaar is de NEC Versa DayLite, voorzien van een 10.4" TFT SVGA 'reflective LCD panel', dat gebruikt maakt van daglicht in plaats van actieve achtergrondverlichting. De DayLite zou dan ook volgens NEC bijzonder geschikt moeten zijn voor toepassing in de open lucht. Daarnaast is de DayLite voorzien van een combinatie van Lithium-ion en Lithium-polymeer-accu's, die een maximale gebruiksduur van maar liefst acht uur mogelijk zouden moeten maken.

De UltraLite is gelijk aan de DayLite, maar dan voorzien van een 'normaal' 10.4" TFT-scherm, en is óók voorzien van dezelfde accu-combinatie, en zou daarmee zo'n 5 uur toe moeten kunnen. Beide apparaten worden geleverd met een Transmeta Crusoe TM5600-600MHz CPU, 128MB SDRAM, 20GB harddisk, externe USB-floppydrive en dito CDROM drive, en inclusief MS Windows 2000 Professional. NEC noemt voor beide apparaten richtprijzen van $2299 tot $2499, in gewoon Nederlands dus vanaf zo'n FL 7000:

Cookie en HlpDsK wezen ons erop dat de in dit nieuwsbericht genoemde feiten met een korreltje zout genomen moeten worden. Onder andere op de fora van Ace's Hardware is een felle discussie gaande over de effecten van de Thermal Monitor op de performance van de Pentium 4. Dit is een nieuwe feature die ingeschakeld wordt in het geval van oververhitting, maar vòòr het zo erg is dat de CPU genoodzaakt is zichzelf stil te zetten om permanente schade te voorkomen. De kloksnelheid van de chip wordt in zo'n geval effectief gehalveerd. In het artikel van InQuest wordt gesuggereerd dat daardoor de processor tijdens het draaien van zware software 50% minder gaat presteren. Als bewijs hiervoor geven ze dat het maximale stroomverbruik van een 1,5GHz processor 72,9 Watt is en dat Intel als specificatie voor ontwerpers van koelers en systemen slechts 54,7 Watt opgeeft.

In de documenten van Intel is echter terug te vinden dat men 200 toepassingen, waaronder zware benchmarks, heeft getest en dat geen van deze in staat was de chip tot het maximale vermogen te duwen. In de praktijk zou de Thermal Monitor dus alleen in actie komen bij bijvoorbeeld een defecte koeler. Omdat InQuest ook geen benchmarks heeft om haar verhaal hard te maken worden de claims op z'n minst twijfelachtig. Kyle van HardOCP merkt bovendien op dat de gebruiker nog altijd het laatste woord heeft:

What Bert may not know is that some mainboards have an adjustment in the BIOS that you can set yourself with the temperature that you want throttle to. (On our systems we have left it at default and never messed with the settings on the particular board that is Folding.) Yes, YOU can turn this on and off and fully control it on some mainboards. If you want a shield in between you and a burned up processor, set it low; if you want to forego the safety feature, set the temp high. I know that MANY of you wished that AMD had the courtesy to include a feature such as this instead of leaving their Athlon and Duron CPUs totally unprotected.

We have never seen nor heard of the CPU throttling being active on any person's CPU and certainly have not experienced it ourselves (unless we FORCED it to happen) under conditions more strenuous than 99.9% of the P4s in the field will ever encounter. I do not suggest that DIYers or hobbyist go the P4 route if they want to buy a system for themselves, but bashing it on this front is simply bad journalism and transparent to many people.

Gideontech heeft een review gebakken van de Samsung SM308 CD-RW annex DVD-speler. De SM308 is géén hi-tech monster, maar heeft natuurlijk het voordeel dat 'ie de alles-in-één liefhebber in grote mate tegemoet komt, dit alles overigens voor een heel redelijke prijs.

Het schrijven van CD-R's gebeurt met achtvoudige snelheid, CD-RW's worden met viervoudige snelheid bewerkt. CD's worden met 32-voudige snelheid gelezen en DVD's kunnen met achtvoudige snelheid worden afgespeeld. Daarnaast beschikt de SM308 niet over BurnProof en is het beschikbare buffer ook maar 2MB groot, dus ook in die zin is er bepaald geen sprake van een high-end apparaat.

Uit de review blijkt in ieder geval dat de Samsung doet wat 'ie belooft: de aangegeven snelheden worden gehaald, en DVD's worden goed afgespeeld. Al met al een drive waarmee niets mis is, als je tenminste niet al te hoge eisen aan de lees- en schrijfsnelheden stelt:

After all the testing on this drive, it showed us that these DVD/CD-RW combos are not much different than having two separate drives. The DVD picture was very nice, the read time and load times were also very fast.

The burns were done perfectly, the CD-R and CD-RW we used read fine in the Samsung drive and also in a Hitachi and Ricoh drive.

If you are in the market for a space saving drive that can do both DVD and burn your favorite CDs, this is the drive for you! It is quiet and gets the job done for a remarkable price. A big thanks to Samsung for providing us with this great sample!

Anand heeft zojuist een flink artikel gepost waarin hij uitlegt waar de slechte en wisselvallige prestaties van de VIA KT266 door veroorzaakt worden. Afgelopen week heb je al in menig nieuwsbericht kunnen lezen dat foute BIOS'en het probleem waren, maar er blijkt meer aan de gang te zijn. Het zal ook verklaren waarom niet elk KT266 bord kon profiteren van nieuwe BIOS-versies, zoals OCWorkbench eerder meldde.

De échte oorzaak blijkt in een piepklein transistortje te zitten. MSI informeerde AnandTech namelijk over een transistor op plek R127, die er volgens hem niet hoorde te zitten. Na wat soldeerwerk werd deze boosdoener van R127 naar R126 verhuisd, wat veel goeds teweeg bracht. Wat precies de functie is van deze knaap is nog niet duidelijk.

In combinatie met de nieuwe bios (MSI versie 1.0B9) namen de prestaties toe met dik 20% en liet de MSI K7T266 Pro het AMD 760 bordje achter zich. De Linpack en Sisoft Sandra benchmarks lieten bijvoorbeeld een bandbreedteverschil van 10 en 12% zien, in het voordeel van de KT266. Het ziet er dus naar uit dat de VIA's KT266 DDR chipset uiteindelijk tóch wel in staat is om de AMD 760 te verslaan, maar zo ver zijn we helaas nog niet helemaal.

Hoewel de prestatiekwestie nu lijkt opgelost, is de stabiliteit namelijk ver achteruit gegaan. Willekeurige vastlopers en het vaak niet willen posten waren een paar vervelende bijwerkingen van de operatie. Anand adviseert dan ook om binnenkort nog maar geen KT266 moedebord in je PC te hangen, maar om nog even te blijven wachten totdat de chipset meer volwassen is:

On the bandwidth side of things, the KT266 also has the potential to offer more bandwidth than the AMD 760 and the ALi MAGiK1 (although the latter suffers incredibly at 100MHz FSB frequencies) again, judging by the improvements we've seen here. The KT266 is apparently able to read from memory quite quickly, possibly due to its noticeably deep buffers. The write performance is still not capable of matching that of the AMD 760 however the combination of higher overall memory bandwidth and competitively low latency memory access will easily nullify that point in any real world applications.

We have also proved that the real world performance of the KT266 has the potential to grow much greater than that of the AMD 760. The original results we came upon failed to paint this positive of a picture, but with a bit of soldering and a new BIOS, things have changed dramatically.

This brings us to the issue of what to do today. If anything, you should still stay away from the KT266, the platform is simply not mature enough. Even if you are brave enough to try removing and soldering resistors, you should never settle for a system that is sub par in terms of stability. What good is performance if you have to reboot your system all the time?

Vriess tipte ons over een artikeltje op 2CPU, waarin een SiSoft Sandra benchmark wordt gegeven van een Tyan 760MP moederbord met daarop twee AMD Palomino 1,99GHz processors. Véél is er niet aan te zien, behalve kwijl-scores, en dáár gaat 't natuurlijk ook om!

En ook op 2CPU roept men al dat deze benchmark wel weer veel Photoshop-gerelateerde opmerkingen zal losmaken, maar dat je er maar van moet vinden wat je zelf wilt. Als het allemaal klopt ligt er een hoop moois in het verschiet, is 't fake dan hebben we pech - maar tóch even in staat van processor-gerelateerde tweakers-opwinding mogen verkeren, en da's natuurlijk ook altijd lekker:

Bij Virtual Hideout hebben ze vandaag niet alleen de Swiftech koeler getest, maar ook het flex keyboard van Plycon. Dit is zoals de naam aangeeft een flexibel toetsenbord die je zonder problemen kan oprollen en opvouwen. Daarnaast is het keyboard ook voedselproof. De feeling van dit toetsenbord is zoals te verwachten iets anders dan bij een normaal toetsenbord, maar volgens de reviewer went het wel. Een erg handig product voor een LAN of voor laptop gebruikers:

At first, I wasn't used to the change of key layout but that took me about 3 days to perfect. I also noticed you had to press the keys a bit farther to get them to register. This also took me a day to get used to. I found it easy to type on when I used it. Only when I typed very fast in short bursts I missed keys more often. You also have to press the keys further for them to work. But this keyboard is silent compared to most keyboards. I found that when I played games with the flex keyboard, it was far better than I thought it would be. I rarely missed movements, and I didn't notice me dying more than usual. If you're wondering what I played, it was Halflife (CounterStrike) and Quake III.

Put your mouse in the middle and roll the keyboard overtop of it. The only solid part of the keyboard is the PCB housing where the keyboards PCB and LEDs are. This is also where the keyboard cable comes out. And the amazing looks of this keyboard don't stop there. Oh no. The keyboard cable has the wires wrapped in an aluminum foil cover and the plastic housing is clear. Which in my opinion is a very nice effect.

De mannen van Virtual Hideout hebben een review in elkaar geknutseld over de MC370-0A heatsink van Swiftech. Deze heatsink is volledig opgebouwd uit aluminium en in het bezit van een 33CFM, 43dBA Papst fan. Verder is de heatsink in het bezit van een bijzonder clip design wat de kans op een vermorzelde CPU flink verkleind. Goed presteren doet ie ook nog eens: hij laat 8 heatsinks waaronder de FOP38 en HedgeHog zonder moeite in het zand bijten. De prijs is met 50 dollar een beetje aan de hoge kant, maar volgens de reviewer is de heatsink elke cent waard:

In terms of the build quality, the Swiftech is very professionally manufactured. The bottom of the heatsink is very smooth and flat, providing an excellent contact surface between it and the CPU. The pins are very tightly pressed onto the heatsink base and there's no visible gaps between them that could lead to the lost of heat transfer. The Papst fan included is another piece of gem. Yes, it's loud pushing air at 33CFM, but instead of the screeching and annoying sound you get with the Deltas, it's more of a bass-rumbling sound. I would definitely choose this one over the Delta. And the cables are nicely wrapped with woven mesh too!

It leaves the previous 8 HSF fans trailing behind, both in idle and full-load tests, something that the current champ, the HedgeHog did before and the recent contender, the Vantec, almost did. If you're looking into the extreme in air-cooling, I would strongly suggest the Swiftech MC730-0A HSF! As for the price, it's available from CoolerGuys at a retail price of US$49.95 with the Papst fan. You'll also have a couple of other fan choices in the Delta Black label and the YS Tech ones. Using the current currency rate, I would say this beast would cost you locals say around Singapore $90. It's a little on the high side, but you're paying for the quality and performance here, and these reasons alone makes it worth every last cent you spend on this HSF!
