On 23 April, the world will welcome the new Pentium 4 1.7GHz. However, it will be not just the CPUs, which will stay in the center of public attention. Intel is also planning to make some changes to the strategy of shipping RIMM memory modules with their boxed Pentium 4 CPUs.
As is known, since RDRAM used to be not very widely spread, Intel shipped all its boxed Pentium 4 processors together with a pair of 64MB RIMM modules. Moreover, there are also some packages including 2 128MB RIMM modules. But having analyzed the today’s situation with RDRAM availability, Intel concluded that the situation has significantly improved for the better. That is why the boxed Pentium 4 1.7GHz will be shipping in three different packages: with 2 64MB RIMMs, with 2 128MB RIMMs and without any RIMMs at all. Also according to our sources, Intel will also reduce the cost of RIMM memory modules on 29 April together with the dramatic price drop on Pentium 4 CPUs. So, Intel seems to be very determined and has every chance to succeed in conquering the mainstream market with the Pentium 4 CPU.
