HardwareCentral heeft eens de tijd genomen om de Presario 800 te reviewen. Dit is een notebook van Compaq die in het budget-segment wordt gepositioneerd. Hij is uitgerust met een 12,1” TFT scherm, een 700MHz Pentium III processor, 128MB RAM en een 10GB harddisk. De CD-ROM speler en 3,5” floppydrive kan de gebruiker extern aansluiten. Tevens vinden we in de Compaq een geïntegreerde 10/100Mbit NIC, 56Kbps modem, 2 USB poorten en een FireWire aansluiting. Hiermee zet Compaq een zeer compleet product neer dat ook nog eens klein en handzaam is:
It's been a couple of years since ultrathin Sony Vaio and Toshiba Portege notebooks first caught frequent fliers' eyes, but those vendors haven't brought prices down as aggressively: The Presario 800, which has a crisp 12.1-inch, active-matrix screen, costs about as much as a Vaio SR17 with 10.4-inch or Portege T3490CT with 11.3-inch display. And the Compaq comes with both 56Kbps modem and 10/100Mbps Ethernet ports built in, as well as two USB ports and even an IEEE 1394 FireWire port for high-speed storage or video peripherals.Activating and deactivating the Pentium III's SpeedStep slowdown didn't make a noticeable difference (no surprise); neither did a session of simple word processing with no CD or DVD play (surprise). A spare battery is $99, but we'd opt for Compaq's bulkier 12-cell "extended life" battery for $199, even at the risk of putting a love handle on the Presario's svelte physique.
Frankly, the rest of our experience with Compaq's affordable ultralight was so positive that we'd leave it on our shopping list despite the too-brief battery.
