Negotiator[STG] verwijst ons naar XS4ALL, waar men sinds kort via software extra beveiliging/anonimiteit kan verkrijgen. Hij schrijft: "Ja ja je kan lekker anoniem surfen met een programma van xs4all en het is gratis Dit is lekker voor al die illegale praktijken die nu lekker thuis kunnen uploaden en mail nakijken...":

Provider XS4ALL, dat volgends eigen zeggen rond de zeventigduizend abonnees heeft, biedt zijn klanten nu extra bescherming voor vier maanden gratis een speciale versie van 'Freedom' te gebruiken, software die de privacy extra beschermt. XS4ALL zegt dat het hiermee mogenlijk is volledig anoniem te surfen, zonder dat een koppeling is te leggen met de echte naam van de surfer. De software is te downloaden bij http://www.xs4all.nl

Wat ik me nu afvraag is wat dat programmaatje 'Freedom' nou doet.. misschien zorgt het ervoor dat je hostname niet geresolved kan worden ofzo? En dan nog, anoniem ben je nooit, aangezien je aan iemands ip alleen al kan achterhalen bij welke provider die persoon zit. Ben benieuwd...

Maarja.. dat zijn we gewend of niet? Natuurlijk is het niet meer dan normaal dat er "patches" komen voor besturingssystemen. Dat gebeurt met elk stukje software, dus waarom een OS niet?

Terwijl de officiële introductie van het besturingssysteem Windows 2000 nog moet plaatsvinden, zou Microsoft nu al bezig zijn met het samenstellen van een servicepakket voor onder andere de reparatie van enkele programmafouten. Het zogeheten Service Pack 1, dat ook enkele updates bevat, moet in juni beschikbaar komen. Het zal dan gratis zijn te downloaden van de Microsoft-website. Op zich is het niet vreemd dat een software-ontwikkelaar zo snel met een servicepakket komt. Met name de allereerste versie van nieuwe programmatuur bevat immers vaak nogal wat bugs en fouten. Maar in dit geval lijkt het Service Pack 1 voor Microsoft wel héél erg belangrijk. Veel grote bedrijven hebben namelijk al laten weten niet over te stappen op Windows 2000 zolang het servicepakket niet beschikbaar is.

AVL kwam op ZDNet een scanner-round up tegen. Vervolgens dacht hij "Hey, dit moeten alle tweakertjes weten!". Nee hoor, dit is wat hij echt schreef:"Hehe, geen GeForce dit keer. ZDNet UK brengt ons een round-up van 6 flatbed scanners, waar onder andere de Agfa SnapScan 1212u als beste uit komt (heb ik zelf ook, ben er heel tevreden over). Er wordt over geschreven:

The Agfa initially caught our attention because of its superb image quality. It was so good, in fact, that you could probably scan an image using this model and use it in a report or a Web page without having to touch it up it in any way whatsoever. But the machine's excellent image quality alone isn't its only impressive feature. For a start, it looks great, at least when it's actually scanning, due to the semi-transparent casing. It is also easy to use, thanks to its clear, no-nonsense TWAIN module, and its hand-holding online help facilities. Het lijkt een heel simpel idee, maar KPN moest er nog achter komen. De koppeling van internet met de telefoon. Binnen enkele maanden komt het telecombedrijf met de Multifoon, een multifunctionele telefooncel waarin zowel bellen als internetten mogelijk is. KPN heeft de 'vinding' woensdag bekendgemaakt. De Multifoon wordt de opvolger van de populaire internetzuilen, die sinds 1996 in enkele grote Nederlandse steden staan. Vooralsnog komen zo'n honderd exemplaren als test alleen in de regio Amsterdam te staan. Als het concept aanslaat volgen er meer, aldus een woordvoerder. KPN wil met de nieuwe telefooncel inspelen op het toenemend gebruik van het internet. Vooral het versturen van e-mail blijkt populair op de internetzuil, beweert de zegsman van het telecombedrijf. Naast bellen en internetten kan via de Multifoon lokale informatie opgevraagd worden, zoals plattegronden, uitgaansmogelijkheden en het plaatselijke weerbericht. Voor het bellen betaalt de gebruiker de normale tarieven van de telefooncel. Het internetten en e-mailen kost enkele guldens. Betaling geschiedt alleen via telefoonkaart, creditcard of chipkaart. De Multifoons krijgen een iets groter formaat dan de gewone telefooncel. Of die ook een andere kleur krijgt dan het traditionele groen, kon KPN niet zeggen.

John de Gelas van Ace's Hardware heeft een erg informatief artikel over de K6-2+ online gezet. De K6-2+ is feitelijk een doorontwikkeling van de K6-III en heeft dezelfde tri-level cache architectuur, alleen nu met maar 128Kb L2 cache. De 24 nieuwe 3DNow! instructies die in de Athlon werden geïntroduceerd worden nu ook ondersteund. K6-III's met een foutgebakken L2 cache zullen verkocht worden als K6-2. Volgens bronnen van Ace's Hardware wordt het op exemplaren met volledig intact L2 cache wellicht mogelijk om de volle 256Kb via het BIOS te activeren:

Astute readers will have noticed that the K6-2+ has 256 KB L2-cache on board, just like the K6-III. However, the K6-2+ will only use 128 KB of the full 256 KB on-die cache. Most K6-IIIs yield at the full 256 KB L2-cache, but a small percentage yield less. Therefore, if AMD only enables 128 KB, all K6-IIIs can be sold as K6-2+s. Remember, AMD is looking for the K6-2+ to compete with the Celeron and 128 KB is just enough to do so.

All parts will be sold as as K6-2+s with a guaranteed working 128 kb of L2 cache, but most parts will be able to use 256 KB L2-cache, so why not use the full 256 KB? Reports are coming in that with most K6-2+ we will be able to enable the remaining 128 KB cache through the BIOS. Can you believe that?

It gets better. You can drop this cheap chip into any Super 7 motherboard as the core voltage is at 2.2V! This chip is expected to be released at 550 MHz in February (probably the 10th) and should reach 600 MHz in the coming months. There will be two versions: one with Gemini for the mobile market and one for the desktop market.

UPC vreest dat de snelheid van haar netwerk als pudding instort wanneer gebruikers massaal overgaan op het gebruik van de gisteren gepubliceerde kabelmodem tweak. Volgens Webwereld werd het proggie min of meer uit wraak geschreven door een 18 jarige student uit Hilversum (thanks Qaz voor de tip):

Diverse bronnen melden dat de kabelexploitant wanhopig op zoek is naar een oplossing voor het probleem. The Register bericht dat UMC, Infineon en IBM een samenwerkingsverband zijn aangegaan wat betreft de produktie van embedded DRAMs. De chips zullen in eerste instatantie geproduceerd worden op een 0,13micron koper-interconnect proces, wat later zal worden teruggebracht naar 0,10micron:

The biggest foundry in IT powerhouse Taiwan, has struck a deal with IBM and Siemens spin-off Infineon to make .10 micron logic chips which use copper interconnects and also combine memory, logic and mixed signal circuits in one part.

[...] The chips will start off at the .13 micron level but then will be slimmed down to a .10 micron process, with the first samples expected before June, the companies said.

The alliance is a continuance of one between Siemens and IBM initiated in 1998, with UMC being brought into the charmed circle because of its foundry muscle and its designer know-how.

I am afraid I have to get down on WinDVD for a few things. First the controls though useful are lacking a lot of functionality, which is present in Power DVD. The ability to extract frames from a DVD is important to a lot of people. And I want to be able to watch a movie without pauses due to CPU utilization. Yes that is right you heard me, WinDVD stuttered several times throughout the move due to high CPU utilization. Any of you who know me, know full good and well that I keep my desktop clean, my start tray to a minimum, and make every effort maximize the user resources available on my PC. I have 3 applications that start with my machine, Norton Antivirus 2000, ICQ, and Adaptec Disk Preparer. I am constantly running with 94% user resources. I have a Dual Celeron 500 @ 600, 128MB CAS-2 PC-133 SDRAM, a Guillemot 3D Prophet DDR with 32MB ram. There is no way in hell I should see a high CPU utilization stall while watching a DVD movie. I can watch the whole thing in Power DVD and never have a problem. I personally will sacrifice a little image quality for the additional benefits of Power DVD, and the ability to watch the whole thing without interruption.

MadOnion heeft een artikel geschreven over het gebruik van hardware T&L in de 3DMark2000 benchmarks. Eind vorige bleek uit tests van HardOCP dat 3DMark2000 op een GeForce met hardware T&L lagere resultaten gaf dan met software T&L. Als we MadOnion mogen geloven is dit een normale situatie en komt het in ieder geval niet door een mogelijk brakke T&L implementatie van de door 3DMark2000 gebruikte MaxF/X engine:

Koeneman bracht ons op de hoogte van deze Monster Sound MX400 review, geschreven door Mike Andrawes van AnandTech. De MX400 is de opvolger van de populaire Monster Sound MX300 en is gebaseerd op de Canyon 3DTM audio controller van ESS. Het kaartje heeft een digitale S/PDIF interface, quad speaker support en ondersteuning voor EAX 1.0, EAX 2.0 en A3D 1.0. Wat betreft geluidskwaliteit is er volgens AnandTech geen verbetering ten opzichte van de MX300, want de kaart blijkt minder goed te presteren dan de Aureal Vortex II chipset:

Those that want the best 3D sound quality should go with a Vortex2 as long as you don't mind the performance hit or your system is powerful enough that the difference is bearable. On the other hand, those that want the best performance possible, or have low end CPU's, should pick the Sound Blaster Live! Further, those need a plethora of digital inputs and outputs, the recently released Sound Blaster Live! Platinum with its Live! Drive is clearly the best option.

The MX400 offers a compromise between these two extremes. It offers a few features over both the Live! and Vortex2 that enhance sound quality, but still comes in 3rd place with regards to sound quality. However, the MX400 is cheaper and offers a number of compelling features of its own. For some, the RioPC upgrade option will be the feature that pushes it over the top, assuming it's available in a timely manner. For those with Dolby Digital decoders, the 5.1 digital output could be the key. For others still, the compromise between 3D sound quality and performance may put the MX400 ahead of the other cards on the extremes of the spectrum.

Ondanks tegenvallende omzet als gevolg van de schaarse supplies van PIII processors heeft Dell laten weten voorlopig geen AMD CPU's te zullen gebruiken:

Dell Computer Corp. which earlier on Wednesday warned that its fourth-quarter results would fall short due to shortages of key parts, is in no rush to find new suppliers in the wake of the shortfall, Chairman and CEO Michael Dell said.

Dell told analysts on a conference call that the Round Rock, Texas-based company was studying how to ensure a better supply of components but was not ready to spurn its long-time supplier Intel Corp. (NasdaqNM:INTC - news) -- at least just yet.

``You are not going to see us change our approach to partnering based on one difficult transition,'' Dell said.

He was responding to a question over whether Dell would begin working with Intel-rival Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE:AMD - news) during an analyst conference call held to discuss the reasons for the fast-growing PC maker's financial shortfall.

Ars Technica dacht ons een plezier te mogen doen met een vergelijking van de Soyo 6VBA 133 en Tyan S1854, twee planken met de VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset. Soyo versterkt met de 6VBA 133 de goede reputatie die het de afgelopen tijd bij overklokkers op heeft weten te bouwen: de 6VBA heeft een jumperless BIOS setup met 27 busspeeds en voltage tweaking. Het bord van Tyan is bijzonder in het feit dat het voorzien is van zowel een slot-1 als socket370, maar brengt de overklokker weinig features:

Overclocking the Tyan was a disappointment. Tyan doesn't set out to cater to overclockers, so it's no surprise that there aren't many robust options to choose from, even with the new 1.0 BIOS. With the updated BIOS used in our test we gained access to 133 (Spread Spectrum off or on), 138 (off), 140 (on), and 150 (on) MHz FSB settings. That's simply not enough granularity to satiate an overclocker, and when you remove the ability to tweak the voltage on the CPU, you simply consign yourself to less than stellar overclocking results.

Still, knowing that the S1854 uses the IC-Works 1966 clock generator, I was able to get the 600B up to 617MHz, where it was moderately stable -- stable enough for me to get benchmarks, but not really stable enough for more than an hour of SETI love. For kicks I threw a Celeron 366MHz Socket 370 CPU in that I know clocks to 550MHz -- still, no dice. 417MHZ was all she wrote, and we have to just admit that the Tyan is not an overclocker's board. Without the ability to change anything more than the FSB and Spread Spectrum, there's not much hope.

The Soyo was, of course, a different story. The voltage tweaking comes to the rescue, and we could see the difference it made almost instantly. We could stablize at 617MHz with only a +5% voltage increase, and we actually were able to run benchmarks even at 648MHz (4.5 x 144MHz). It, too, wouldn't take a night of SETI, however.

Reinstall the 1.03.05 drivers - get them from www.voodoo.dk if you need to.

Unzip the 1.04.00 driver EXE file to a directory on your hard drive. (Use WinZip for example). DO NOT INSTALL THEM!

In the device manager, double click on the Voodoo3 under "Display Adapters." Then click the "Driver" tab, then "Update Driver."

Tell Windows that you want to display drivers in a certain location, then click have disk - then browse to the directory that you unzipped the files to before. (you'll actually have to browse to a subdirectory in the dir that you created called "driver").

Koen van Hardwareinfo.net heeft een review geschreven van de Corum Athlon 500@750Mhz. Deze gemodificeerde Athlons staat op dit moment voor FL 939,- in de Pricewatch, wat maar liefst 40% goedkoper is dan een echte Athlon 750. Volgens de bevindingen van Koen werkt de overgeklokte Athlon van Corum 100% stabiel:

Nadat het systeem gearriveerd was, heeft de PC bijna een week lang RSA64 blokjes liggen grazen. Fervente Tweakers.net bezoekers zullen precies weten waar ik het over heb. Het komt er op neer dat ik met het RSA64 programma een constante CPU-belasting van 100% heb gecreëerd. Enkele duizenden RSA64 blokjes en zeven dagen verder werkte het systeem nog steeds stabiel. Na zeven dagen 100% CPU belasting nog steeds probleemloos werken lijkt mij een sluitend bewijs voor volledige stabiliteit. De temperatuur van de CPU’s lag zelfs na deze week volle belasting nog onder 50 graden Celsius.

Verder heb ik het systeem ook nog op stabiliteit getest door vier dagen Quake timedemo’s te draaien. Hierbij wordt niet alleen de CPU flink belast, maar gaat ook de videokaart als flinke kachel werken in je systeemkast. Ook deze test kwam de Corum AMD Athlon 500@750 MHz machine perfect door. Qua stabiliteit is er dus niets te klagen bij deze PC’s.

As a long time user of software DVD decoders, I was a little skeptical about the real benefits of a hardware decoder, especially for high-end CPU owners. After testing out the Hollywood Plus DVD Decoder, I can safely say that it offers the best image quality of any computer DVD player that I've seen, and rivals set-top DVD boxes. The picture is vivid and very sharp. No decompression or motion lines are visible. To top it off, the framerate is consistent, and I never detected any dropped frames (which can cause a choppy display). Of the DVD decoders that I've seen, the Hollywood Plus' image quality has the most realistic feel to it.

The main advantage to a hardware DVD decoder is a low CPU utilization rate during playback. Whereas, software DVD players take up 60-90% of the CPU cycles, hardware DVD decoders rarely go above 40%, regardless of the CPU speed. To test the Hollywood Plus' CPU utilization rate, CPU use was measured during the first scene and the opening credits of Tomorrow Never Dies. For comparison, results from ASUS's V6600 Pure (GeForce 256 SDRAM) using ASUS's software DVD decoder are included. Both decoders were run at 1600x1200x16 for optimal image quality.

Intel kampt nog steeds met grote tekorten bij de produktie van de Pentium III. Distributeurs hebben volgens The Register te horen gekregen dat de leveringen voor februari zijn gecancelled. AMD lijkt vooralsnog wel in staat te zijn om aan de vraag te voldoen:

One major European distributor told The Register today that it has lost its February backlog allocation of 15,000 Pentium IIIs. Each part would have been worth $150 to its bottom line.

The European position was confirmed by an American distributor who said his February backlog had been cancelled too. Pentium III parts are -- he reckons -- being diverted to vendors in the Chip Direct programme.

AMD's backlog on Athlon parts is still intact and it has no problems meeting dealer demand, according to a European distributor.

Ars Technica brengt ons een review van het Voodoo3-3500TV videokaartje met geïntegreerde MPEG-2 video en audio capture. Dat laatste blijkt leuk te werken zolang je geen DirectX 7 wenst te gebruiken, want de huidige drivers kunnen alleen met DX6 overweg:

The 3500 is the fastest 3D accelerator available with vidcap capabilities. While the Matrox Marvel cards are better suited for capture and editing, the 3500 is perfectly suited to be used as a digital VCR. With today's drive prices plummeting, you could store 30 or 40 hours of MPEG2 encoded video on a $300 hard drive.

Unfortunately, the 3500 is hamstrung by the lack of driver support from 3dfx. Without a DirectX 7 driver that works with the Visual Reality software, the 3500 is basically just a slightly faster V3 3000. Is there any reason to buy into that? Alternatively if you install the DirectX 6 driver so your vidcap works, your 3D performance will suffer, and you'll be unable to play any DirectX 7 games, like Unreal Tournament. Quite frankly, the consumer shouldn't have to make these sorts of decisions, and given the price of a V3 3000 ($100), I don't see why I'm supposed to pay $75 more for capabilities that I can't really use.
