Bij Planet Hardware hebben ze een review gemaakt van de Maxi Sound MUSE geluidskaart van Guillemot. Dit kaartje heeft vier speakeruitgangen en A3D 1.0 en EAX 1.0 ondersteuning. Met z'n $29 is ie vooral bedoeld voor de budgetgamer. De bijgeleverde Yamaha XG MIDI software is een leuk speeltje.

So how is the sound quality? Well, we found the quality of tunes and sound effects to be slightly more tinny than my old Monster Sound MX300. We also found there to be slightly more static and humming. With regards to game sound quality, there's really no difference between this and any other card that supports the industry standards - EAX, A3D, and DirectSound; so the card passes the test here.

[...] Overall, the Guillemot Maxi Sound MUSE is an incredible value for any gamer in need of 3D audio support or a PCI sound card. There isn't much in the line of extras here, so users should expect to get what they paid for. The MIDI support from Yamaha is a nice cherry on top, but the lack of documentation is a bit of a minus. But as long as you simply want a card that does the basic gaming necessities, we think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

De Overclockerz Store (OCZ) heeft onlangs besloten om zelf een eigen merk videokaarten te gaan voeren, en dat zullen we weten ook. Na de GeForce2 MX review van vanmiddag heeft ook nV News een review gemaakt van een kaart uit OCZ's catalogus, te weten de GeForce2 PRO 64MB.

Zoals je vast al weet loopt het geheugen van de GeForce2 Pro standaard op 400MHz, tegenover de 333MHz van de normale GeForce2 GTS. De OCZ GeForce2 PRO is recht uit de doos voorzien van een Thermaltake Blue Orb, een TV-out en 5ns DDR SDRAM. Bij het overclocken van de kaart bleek dat het mogelijk was om 240MHz core/449MHz mem te halen, maar dat dit niet echt stabiel was. Een verlaging naar 235MHz/445MHz bleek voldoende om volkomen stabiel urenlang Quake3 te draaien. In de benchmarks is te zien dat de overgeklokte GeForce2 Pro wel erg dicht bij de Ultra (die op een snelheid van 250MHz core/460MHz mem loopt) komt. De vraag is dan ook: Pro of Ultra?

Ome Tom heeft vandaag een op zijn site een blurbje de wereld in gestuurd over de overname van 3dfx, de tegenvallende markt voor PC spul en de Vapochill socket van Asetek.

Zoals iedereen nu toch wel moet weten is 3dfx verleden vrijdagavond voor het grootste gedeelte overgenomen door nVidia en dat feit is natuurlijk niet onopgemerkt langs Tom gegaan. Hoewel zijn ‘relatie’ met 3dfx niet altijd evengoed is geweest is hij evenals 32 procent van de t.net bezoekers van mening dat het vooral erg jammer is dat een eens zo’n mooi bedrijf ten onder is gegaan :

Deze heeft hij al een tijdje in z'n lab staan, maar dankzij een paar probleemjes is hij nog niet aan een review toegekomen. Desondanks kan hij al wel vast melden dat de Vapochill een Athlon van bijna 1,5GHz mogelijk maakt :[/break]What I want to let you know right now is that Vapochill works fine. You have seen the results in the Pentium 4 article and they should speak for themselves. I managed to clock Athlon up to 1485 MHz providing stable and reliable operation. Speeds of 1533 MHz and more would reach POST, but not boot properly. The temperature of the evaporator remained between minus 11 and minus 9 °C (12.2 - 15.8 °F), which is very impressive, because it shows that Vapochill is able to remove over 70 W of heat!

Mac OS Rumors weet ons te vertellen dat Apple na de release van MacOS X processoren met een hogere kloksnelheid zal hebben zitten in de iMacs en iBooks dan in de high-end PowerMacs / Cubes. In de low-end machines komen namelijk vroeg in het nieuwe jaar de vernieuwe G3 (IBM PowerPC 750CXe) processoren met snelheden tot 733MHz te zitten. De G4 blijft vooralsnog steken op 500MHz, al wordt verwacht dat dit volgend jaar naar 600MHz wordt getild. Apple probeert dan natuurlijk nog steeds de G4 te verkopen, en dat moet mogelijk worden door de optimalisaties in MacOS X voor Altivec, die ervoor zorgen dat de G4 een heel stuk beter presteert in X dan de G3 (zie ook dit bericht):

The TechZone heeft de MidiLand S4 8200 speakers eens beluisterd. Voor $399 krijg je vijf satellietjes van ieder 20 Watt en een subwoofer van 100 Watt(RMS). Tevens heeft deze set een ADS-2000 Dolby Digital 5.1 decoder. Volgens de reviewer is de S4 8200 de beste in z'n soort als PC-DVD en 3D-Gaming speakerset.

The S4 MidiLand 8200 is one of the few speakers we've come across that plays well with both games and music. The sound is nice and clear and free of mid range coloration that plague many computer speakers. The satellite speakers are some of the best full range transducers we've ever heard. It easily beats the Creative DDT-2500 in both clarity and volume.

The sub woofer can really pump out the bass and reach wall shaking volume. Bass was deep and tight and even though it's a port enclosure, it managed to avoid the "one note bass" so common in these type of enclosure setups.

[...] Overall, the S4 MidiLand 8200 is the best speaker system we've ever come across. It's been a long time coming but finally we have a speaker system to replace the aging Cambridge SoundWorks. At $399.95, the S4 MidiLand 8200 is far from cheap but for the amount of features you get, it's a bargain. You can find them online for as low as $270 and at that price, it's a steal.

De mannen van t-break hebben voor ons vandaag een review over het nieuwste geheugen van Mushkin online gezet. In de review wordt de derde revisie van het high performance RAM van mushkin vergeleken met met een 128MB PC133 reepje van EMS en een 128MB PC133 reepje van Spectec. Het reepje Mushkin geheugen wordt gegarandeerd te werken op 150MHz bij een CAS setting van 2-2-2. Het reepje wat de reviewer in handen kreeg bleek zelfs te werken op 156MHz. Voor Intel overclockers onder ons dus een zeer aantrekkelijk reepje wat maar één nadeel heeft... de prijs:

It's pretty clear that Mushkin is the fastest RAM money can buy. It was able to blow past the competition with no problems. If you're a power user who wants to tweak their system to the max, don't even bother with anything else. However, power does come at a price and Mushkin is priced at US$133/- which is the highest of the lot.

The EMS' performance lied right in between the Mushkin and the Spectec and it's priced accordingly in between those two as well. The performance is good and it can be decently overclocked. As far as price/performance ratio goes, the EMS is the winner.

Lastly, the Spectec is the cheapest of the lot, costing a mere US$ 63/- for a 128MB stick. Not necessarily the king of the hill as far as performance is concerned, but it gets the job done. If you have no intentions of overclocking your system or don't mind switching to Cas3 or are on a tight budget, go for the Spectec.

Chris Angelini van Sharky Extreme heeft onlangs een interview gehad met Dave Orton, de directeur van ATi. Naast een heleboel marketinggeklets en om-de-vragen-heendraaierij van Orton krijgen we in ieder geval te horen dat ATi van plan is om de HyperZ-technologie verder te ontwikkelen voor toekomstige videokaarten:

Sharky Extreme: HyperZ was a good "first-step" in reducing the limitations imposed by memory bandwidth. Will future ATI products utilize refined implementations of HyperZ?

Dave Orton: Yes, future ATI products will utilize refined technologies to alleviate the limitations imposed by memory bandwidth. ATI recognized that memory bandwidth is of great importance - this was taken into consideration during the design and development phases of the Radeon product. As a result, the Radeon is ahead of its time in terms of tackling this issue. Radeon's implementation of Hyper Z, however, is just a first step in our efforts. Om volgend jaar 10% (oftewel 15 miljoen CPU's) van de processormarkt in handen te krijgen wil VIA Technologies al haar aandacht richten op de low-power chips, zoals de 0.13micron Samuel II. Zoals eerder gemeld zal het bedrijf daarvoor wafers gebruiken van TSMC, dat mede dankzij het verplaatsen van de productieproces naar Taiwan de kosten flink omlaag moet brengen. Daarnaast zal er komend jaar nog een geïntegreerde Cyrix III processor komen met een Pro133 chipset en Savage4 graphics. De higher-end versies daarvan zijn gecancelled.

VIA's plans centre on a shift to 0.15 and 0.13 micron production, particularly with its WinChip-derived Samuel II CPU. Production will be brought back to Taiwan - primarily through a fabrication deal with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC). It hopes the move will cut costs, and that in turn will push it into profitability.

The company will also roll out an integrated CPU based on the Cyrix III and wrapping in its Pro-133X and Savage 4 graphics chipsets. That's due to ship during Q2 2001. However, its higher-end integrated chip, above the current MII and also based on the Cyrix III, has now been scrapped. The reason? Intel's decision to knock its own integrated chip, Timna, on the head.

Andrei Gule van Digit Life heeft een artikel geschreven waarin hij de lezer probeert te helpen met het vinden van de voor hen geschikte methode om Mp3 bestanden te maken. Aspecten als de juiste encoder, VBR en normalization komen aan bod in de zoektocht naar de juiste instellingen. De schrijver gaat er wel van uit dat je een aantal basisbegrippen kent en een deel van het artikel gaat specifiek over de Lame encoder:

What mp3 player is better?

Amongst soft players it's nearly everything what is made on the Fraunhofer code: some versions of WinAmp (1.6, 2.20, 2.21, 2.22, 2.666, 2.7, the others use their own decoder from NullSoft), WinPlay, AudioActive, Microsoft Windows Media Player... Besides, X-Audio is worth mentioning and everything on this code. There are as well many other players on ISO code, the best are MPG123 and Apollo. Everything on Xing code (Xing player, FreeAmp) is considered the worst - these players emphasize high frequencies in order to indemn for highs which are neglected by other Xing coders.

As for hardware mp3 players, I have little knowledge there. But still, hardware usually uses the same algorithms as soft players. Some players even contain flash-chips in order to update mp3 decoder. Whatever the case, you should pay attention to the code, the decoding algorithm is based on. Usually, everything on Fraunhofer is good, ISO and X-Audio - depends on realization, Xing - bad.

Bij Tech-Review.com hebben ze eens gekeken naar de Rocco 5.1 speakerset van Jazz Hipster, een nieuwkomer op de markt uit Taiwan. Zoals de naam al aangeeft gaat het hier om een systeem met 5 speakers en een subwoofer dat bovendien in staat is om Dolby Digital 5.1 signalen te decoderen en weer te geven. Op het eerste gezicht ziet alles er wel goed uit; de verpakking is goed, en aan alle nodige kabeltjes is gedacht. Als de speakers dan ook daadwerkelijk aangesloten worden, wordt de reviewer toch iets minder positief over de speakers (om het licht te zeggen). De geluidskwaliteit blijkt absoluut bagger te zijn, zo schrijft hij:

Unfortunately, the Rocco 5.1 satellites are extremely weak in all audio ranges from mid to high. Their muddy output sounds more like a small portable radio than a Dolby Digital 5.1 capable speaker. It literally sounds as if Jazz took some old radio speakers and put them into the Rocco's. It's similar to placing a pair of ear bud headphones on the table and blasting the walkman as loud as you can. Okay, maybe not that bad... but close. The sound is full of tin and incapable of evoking any type of emotion or pleasure. In fact the this 3" driver would be better suited anywhere but in a speaker.

[...] As expected, the subwoofer might as well put down its driver and sit quietly in the corner. There is no wall shaking bass anywhere to be felt, and the sound that does come out is simply strange. You're better off suited having a pet monkey throw a tennis ball against the wall. When low frequencies are in fact sent to the subwoofer, it simply doesn't respond to them. If you hear anything, it's going to be the sound being cut off right when the frequency goes below 50 Hz. The thing just shouldn't even be called a subwoofer. Simply put, bass isn't in its vocabulary.

Tja... wat moet ik hier nog aan toevoegen?

TweakTown heeft eens gekeken naar de System Blower van SpeedyCool. Het apparaat bevat twee 2800rpm fans en kan door middel van een plakgedeelte aan de binnenkant van je kast gesticked worden. De installatie is dus erg snel en makkelijk gedaan. In de praktijk bleek de temperatuur van 39 naar 34 graden te zijn gezakt, wat toch een aardige verbetering is. Desalniettemin vond de reviewer dat hij maar erg weinig toevoegt aan bestaande oplossingen, zoals The Card Cooler. Hieronder de conclusie:

When we review products at TweakTown we try to remain positive as much as possible. However, when we see products like the SpeedyCool System Blower which is almost exactly the same as another product which was originally designed a couple years back first thoughts tend to stick and give the overall product a bad name even if they do perform well.

With that being said, I will now say this... The SpeedyCool is indeed similar to another product but it does have a different feature used to attach itself to your case, which is better then the original card cooler from The Card Cooler. However, generally speaking that is about the only real difference and it is too similar to the original card cooler and some may even suggest that it was copied from them. I am not in the position to state that, but it does look to be that way.

The SpeedyCool is a nice cooling unit, fans are quiet while pushing 34 CFM of air and performs OK, but only just for the high price of US$18.95 (around AU$35), however if you try to make the same cooling unit from home you'll find that the overall cost will be more. If the SpeedyCool System Blower was to be an original product we could have give it a higher rating, but it isn't.

VIAHardware heeft een kijkje genomen naar de OCZ GeForce2 MX Extreme. De Overclockerz Store verkoopt deze kaarten voor $129 met 5,5 ns RAM en een Blue Orb gemonteerd, ideaal om over te klokken dus. De default snelheid van 175/166 werd tijdens de review dan ook opgepompt naar 220/220, wat misschien nog hoger kan omdat de retail versie RAM-sinks krijgt. De kaart had overgeklokt een grote voorsprong op de Hercules MX kaart, maar toch niet genoeg om in de buurt van de GTS te komen:

One has to remember that the OCZ MX, hell the whole OCZ store, is catered to sell to computer hardware enthusiast. This can be a good thing and bad. The upside is you generally get a very good performing product for less money. The downside is you won't get any special OCZ driverz, added features such as TV out, game bundle, or a fancy shiny box.

WebWereld schrijft dat VNU overweegt om Ilse en Startpagina alweer van de hand te doen. Beide internetsites vallen onder de groep 'Consumenteninformatie' die het bedrijf overweegt te verkopen als gevolg van de overname van ACNielsen voor 2,6 miljard euro. Hierna wil VNU op andere internetgebieden actief worden, zoals bijvoorbeeld het meten van internetgebruik. Hieronder wat quotes uit het bericht:

Om de overname te financieren overweegt VNU de groepen Educatieve Informatie en Consumenteninformatie te verkopen. Onder die laatste groep vallen naast bekende tijdschrifttitels als Libelle en Panorama ook de dit jaar aangekochte sites Startpagina en Ilse.

Woordvoerder Maarten Schikker van VNU bevestigt de waarschijnlijke verkoop van Startpagina en Ilse. "Die sites vallen onder de groep Consumenteninformatie, en die willen wij mogelijk verkopen." Het streven is de groep in zijn geheel te verkopen, aldus de woordvoerder. Schikker verwacht medio volgend jaar meer duidelijkheid.

[...] Volgens Ten Houten zal de verkoop van de publieksuitgaven van VNU weinig consequenties voor zijn bedrijf hebben. "Wij krijgen met een nieuwe aandeelhouder te maken, maar verder verandert er niets. De afspraken die wij met de Tijdschriften Groep hebben, blijven gewoon staan."

[...] ACNielsen behaalde over het jaar eindigend op 30 september een omzet van ruim 1,5 miljard dollar. De groepen Consumenteninformatie en Educatieve Informatie, waarvan VNU de verkoop nu gaat onderzoeken, zijn goed voor een omzet van respectievelijk 835 en 77 miljoen euro.

VNU zal de overname verder financieren met een overbruggingskrediet en met een aandelenemissie van zo'n 500 miljoen euro.

Philips heeft een techniek toegepast in haar nieuwste CD brander die ervoor moet zorgen dat ook CD-R's van mindere kwaliteit op hoge snelheid gebrand en gelezen kunnen worden. Dit Thermal Balanced Writing (TBW) zorgt er voor dat de putjes op de geschreven CD diep genoeg zijn door van te voren te bepalen hoe krachtig de laser moet zijn. De eerste brander met TBW is de PCRW804K/10, een 8 speed rewriter met 2MB buffer:

Philips introduceert de PCRW804K/10, een 8-speed cd-rw drive die voorzien is van een nieuwe schrijftechniek, genaamd Thermo-Balanced Writing (TBW). Deze Philips techniek verhoogt de kwaliteit van de gegevens die op cd-r en cd-rw discs worden geschreven en voorkomt de kans op schrijffouten. Bovendien kan met deze techniek op 95 procent van alle verkrijgbare discs probleemloos informatie worden weggeschreven. In een tijd waarin de drive-snelheden blijven toenemen, moeten branders vaker onder niet-optimale condities opnemen. Voor drives met een snelheid van 8-speed of hoger zijn er fysieke beperkingen bij gebruik van goedkope discs.

De mannen van Lost Circuits hebben een review van Asus' Pentium 4 moederbord P4T online gezet. De review is zeer uitgebreid en gaat in op de layout, de features van het BIOS en de eigenschappen van de chipset zelf. Ook vinden we natuurlijk benchmarks terug, zowel in normale als in overgeklokte vorm. Het bord heeft genoeg features en bleek goed te lopen en het is volgens de reviewer ondanks zijn hoge prijs een goede keus:

Back to the P4T: This board rocks in basically every aspect. Ease of installation, performance and stability are exemplary within the mentioned limitations of the CPU. Adding the patented back plane to the board is the easiest workaround for mounting the klutzy heat sink required by the Pentium4. Otherwise, there is little to be said about the P4T, except that, if I would ever consider a Pentium4, most likely, the ASUS P4T would be my first choice.

Bij Inside-Hardware heeft men een review geschreven van de DFI AK74-AC, één van de eerste socket-A moederborden die gebruikt maakt van VIA's nieuwe KT133A chipset. Zoals bekend heeft de KT133A officiële support voor AMD processoren met een FSB van 133MHz (266MHz DDR). De AK74-AC heeft een 1xAGP / 5xPCI / 1xISA / 1xAMR / 3xDIMM layout en heeft verder geen echt bijzondere features. Multiplier adjustment is niet mogelijk en de Vcore is wel te veranderen, maar slechts met 0,1V. De nieuwe FSB-opties openen wel nieuwe mogelijkheden voor socket-A eigenaren; de Duron 600 van de reviewer draaide zonder problemen op 858MHz met een FSB van 143MHz (286MHz DDR).

De hogere FSB is duidelijk merkbaar bij de prestaties van dit moederbord. In de tests werden een Duron 800 op 100MHz (8x100) en op 133MHz (6x133) met elkaar vergeleken. 3DMark profiteert met een verschil van bijna 400 punten duidelijk van deze snellere bus:

The new KT133A chipset has definitely proved itself worthy as a temporary upgrade for users until DDR prices come down. The 133MHz memory is finally able to take full advantage of the Dual Pumped bus found in all Socket-A motherboards and it really shows in the benchmarks. To be honest with you, at first I wasn't to optimistic about this motherboard because it looked almost identical to it's predecessors and I didn't think that simply changing the northbridge would help much. Boy was I wrong!

It's fast, stable, and has some new features that are found on the higher price motherboards. Most importantly, it won't cost you an arm and a leg.

Een dag na de release van de 3ivx Macintosh decoder, hebben de mannen van 3ivx nu ook de windows decoder online gezet. Eerder hebben we al een paar kleine beloftes mogen lezen; via deze nieuwe compressie-techniek - die voor onder andere Windows, Macintosh, Linux, Amiga en BeOS zal verschijnen - zullen filmpjes maximaal 60% van de oude grootte zijn, zonder zichtbaar kwaliteitsverlies. Aangezien ik hier al een tijdje niet meer op de site van 3ivx kan komen, komt de quote van MyDivX.com:

Jeff Brubaker van Anandtech heeft een vergelijking van verschillende Pentium 3 chipsets onder linux online gezet. Hij bekijkt de Asus CUSL2 (Intel 815 chipset), de Asus CUBX (Intel BX chipset) en de QDI Advance 10 (VIA Apollo Pro 133A chipset) en onderwerpt deze aan een aantal benchmarks. Het geheel wordt getest onder Red Hat 7.0 met een 2.4.0-test11 kernel. Jeff bekijkt achtereenvolgens: AGP, disk, geheugen en als laatste een kernel 2.4.0-test11 compilatie. Waarom het interessant is om deze chipsets onder linux te testen legt hij in de inleiding uit:

What makes this article especially relevant to Linux users is that many chipsets are not properly supported. It's especially disheartening to have your several month-long uptime broken by a hardware AGP bug that locks the machine. This is sometimes common even after chipsets have been available for quite a while; hardware bugs are often the hardest to track down. While Intel's chipsets are often well supported, the features of the 815 have taken until almost now to be supported. Development kernels are required for full ATA/100 support and the on-board/off-board video card duality can cause problems with agpgart, Linux's kernel module for AGP support, unless you use the latest kernels.[break]Uit de conclusie die wordt getrokken blijkt dat de 2 Intel chipsets beide beter dan de VIA chipset zijn. Alleen op disk performance gaat het VIA chipset over het BX bord heen, aangezien dit niet beschikt over ATA66 en ATA100. Als overall winnaar wordt de 815 chipset gekozen:[/break]We would have to pick the Intel 815 chipset as the best choice for the Linux user with a Pentium-III at the moment. However, that comes with the warning that one must use a modern kernel to get proper AGP support for this kernel without using the onboard video. That may scare some of the not-so-advanced Linux users away, at least until the distributions start shipping 2.4 kernels, probably sometime early next year. That is, of course, assuming that 2.4.0 gets released sometime in the near future.
