Na de 340MB versie heeft IBM een nieuwe Microdrive ontwikkeld met een capaciteit van 1GB. Dit schijfje doet 3600 toeren per minuut, heeft een sustained data rate van 4MB per seconde en een average seektime van 12ms. De prestaties zijn dus niet echt schokkend, maar je moet de Microdrive ook niet vergelijken met de huidige ATA100/SCSI schijven. De Microdrive is met z'n 5x42x36mm en 16gram vooral bedoelt als concurrent voor flashkaarten, en kan worden toegepast in handheld devices, zoals MP3 spelers.

Getting so much into such a small form factor requires cutting-edge technology and the Microdrive comes with a significant price tag to reflect the effort.

Looking at it on a 'pence-per-Mb' basis however, the Microdrive offers a far more cost-effective solution than the CompactFlash alternative. The drive offers all-round better value for money than the older 340Mb model, with the new 1Gb drive not only 30 per cent faster but also consuming 30 per cent less power - a significant consideration for mobile users.

Earlier models of this unique IBM wonder have already had a significant effect on the handheld market sector, with compatible devices holding a definite advantage in the marketplace.

With all things considered, £415 is a large chunk of money to spend on such a small product, but if you're up for it, this innovative piece of kit will breathe new life and functionality into any suitable handheld device.

Planet GeForce heeft een review on line gemikt van de StarForce 815 van MicroStar Inc. Deze GeForce2 GTS heeft 32MB DDR-RAM op 333MHz, een core op 200MHz en een TV out. Het 6ns geheugen laat zich goed overklokken tot 385MHz; de core blijft stabiel tot zo'n 245MHz. Hier de conclusie uit de review:

The MSI MS-815 StarForce proved to be a better than average card. I found the lowest price on it at PC Club, where it was $189. That's a little on the high side in today's market. It's a great card though, and I would recommend it over some of the bottom feeders being sold today.

It's just hard for me to excited over a 32MB GeForce2 GTS card anymore. Times are changing, and this card will soon be considered old hat. I do look forward to MSI doing a NV20 card in the near future though, because they make good cards.

De nieuwe Savage/IX mobiele graphics-chipset van S3 is gekozen door drie grote laptopfabrikanten, te weten Sony, NEC en Micron. Sony's VAIO en NEC's VersaLXi/VersaPro krijgen een 8MB versie, Micron heeft gekozen voor de 16MB uitvoering in de Transport GX(+) laptops:

Digit Life heeft de Fuji FinePix 4700 gereviewed. Deze digitale camera heeft een 2,4 Megapixel CCD en kan daarmee door middel van interpolatie foto's met een resolutie van 2400x1800 maken. Met 16MB aan flashgeheugen waar de JPEG bestanden op worden opgeslagen en 2 AA batterijen kun je meteen aan de slag. In de review wordt onder andere gekeken naar de lichtgevoeligheid, de scherpte en het stroomverbruik van de camera:

RenderMan schrijft dat hij een paar foto's is tegengekomen van een erg mooie kast. De kast is nog niet helemaal compleet, maar het ziet er nu al erg goed en professioneel uit. Het waterkoelinggedeelte van de kast is nog niet klaar, maar als dat evengoed wordt als de behuizing zal wat wel piekfijn in orde zijn :

Gamers Depot komt vandaag als eerste met een review over de Xtrusio DSR-100 speakerset van Logitech. Deze 4.1 speakerset heeft volgens de specs een subwoofer die 52 Watt aan herrie produceren en de 4 satelliet speakertjes leveren elk 12 Watt. Dit alles zit gegoten in een stijlvolle behuizing en kan bediend worden met een handige remote control aan een draadje. Volgens de reviewer is de geluidskwaliteit op vooral de hogere volumes niet al te best, maar dat wordt ruimschoots goed gemaakt door de prijs die met 179 dollar erg vriendelijk is gebleven :

Overall the Xtrusio’s do a good job of filling their price point as a 4.1 speaker system, however they still have some ground to gain if they ever hope to turn folks away from the Klipsch Promedia 4.1 system. If you are in the market for a 4.1 solution and don’t have the money to pony up for the Promedia’s, then the Xtrusio’s are your best bet. In fact we haven’t head a better 4.1 system for under $200.00.

It seems that in most regards, Logitech has hit most of their goals with this system. In such a tough market, it’s nice to see the competition flourishing from just about every one of the mainstream companies out there. I’m sure that Logitech will have a lot of success with the Xtrusio system because it does a good job of meeting the budget buyer who wants good sound. Keep in mind that these speakers aren’t due to be released until early next year, so if you want them you’ll have to wait a bit longer.
