Just after RAMBUS took beating after beating from the online press, things seem to be looking up. The astronomical prices that have given RAMBUS its reputation have quietly faded away/ Over the past few weeks, RDRAM prices have been dropping like rocks. Here's a quick look at the latest prices courtesy of iBuyer.Net.

PC600 - 128mb - $307 ---- 64mb - $189

PC700 - 128mb - $340 ---- 64mb - $195

PC800 - 128mb - $384 ---- 64mb - $237

With RDRAM prices rapidly approaching an affordable (or acceptable) level, RAMBUS' plans against DDRAM seem a little clearer. DDRAM should cost a little more than PC133 RAM today, so for example, let's say that a 128mb stick of DDR will cost around $200. With a little more drop in RDRAM's pricing, we could probably see RDRAM around $250-275 in a few months. That's a $50-75 price difference that could be easily eaten up if RAMBUS' royalty fiasco goes through. Thus, RAMBUS" preferential royalty rates towards RDRAM should make an impact in the memory industry after all.

Zoals je ziet, zij zien de toekomst voor de prijzen van RDRAM zonnig in: ze verwachten dat de prijzen de komende maanden zodanig zullen zakken zodat het verschil tussen DDR-Ram en RDRAM maar meer 50-75 dollar bedraagt, en die laatste paar dollars in verschil zouden wel eens makkelijk gecompenseerd kunnen worden door het 'Rambus royalty fiasco'.

Jammer genoeg (?) heb ik deze prijsdalingen niet terug kunnen vinden in de geliefde pricewatch, zoals je kan zien in de onderstaande grafiek zijn de prijzen voor 128MB PC700 wel gedaald vorige maand, maar heeft deze trend zich deze maand niet voort gezet: er is zelfs een kleine prijsstijging te bespeuren:

Major DRAM manufacturers are quietly planning to file an industry antitrust complaint against Rambus Inc. with the Federal Trade Commission, according to high-level industry sources last week.

The move would be a pre-emptive strike to have Rambus' synchronous-DRAM interface patents declared unenforceable. The biggest memory makers also want to block further attempts by Rambus to force them to pay royalties on their mainstream SDRAMs, double-data-rate SDRAMs, and logic controllers with synchronous interfaces.

Rambus last month said it planned to seek royalties from any company using its patented synchronous-memory technology in a sweeping claim aimed at virtually all DRAM vendors and a number of other chip suppliers. Toshiba Corp. and Hitachi Ltd. have since separately agreed to license the patents and pay Rambus unspecified royalties.

Een 1,3 GHz P4 gaat 795 dollar (1900 gulden met de huidige dollarkoers) kosten en de 1,4 GHz 895 dollar (2050 gulden) kosten (prijzen per 1000 stuks). In september moeten de 1,3 en 1,4 GHz processors in de winkels liggen. In het zelfde artikel meldt The Register ook dat Intel een 0.13 Micron Pentium III op de roadmap heeft geplaatst onder de naam Almador.":

The Pentium 4 running at 1.3GHz will cost $795 when it debuts in September, with its 1.4GHz brother coming in at $895.

But Intel will attempt to start its familiar pricing scheme only two months later in November this year, with the 1.3GHz costing $625 and the 1.4GHz $795.

Those prices will be for units of 1000 but indicate further speeds and a typical Intel price curve over the months to come.

Intel, as expected, has now placed the Almador family of microprocessors on its roadmap, and has started talking about the Pentium III fabbed at 0.13 micron.

Itsme! schrijft dat WebWereld bericht dat klanten van Counterpane Security een unieke verzekering kunnen afsluiten, namelijke eentje tegen hackers (of zoals je wilt crackers). Deze verzekering, de eerste van zijn soort, kan een dekking leveren tot 10 miljoen dollar per jaar, met een bijbehorende premie van 75.000 dollar:

De verzekering dekt schade als omzetverlies en diefstal van waardevolle informatie toegebracht door hackers. De maximale dekking bedraagt 100 miljoen dollar.

Counterpane zegt dat de verzekering 'de eerste in zijn soort' is. "De verzekeringswereld had voorheen niet voldoende risicogarantie van beveiligingsbedrijven", zegt Bronek Masojada van Lloyd's in een persbericht. "Counterpane heeft bewezen dat met haar technieken het risico substantieel is teruggebracht."

downtime kwam een link afgeven naar deze preview van de Micron Samurai DDR chipset:

"De al eerder aangekondigde Samurai DDR chipset van geheugenfabrikant Micron moet nog dit najaar op de markt komen. Micron hoopt daarmee de eerste te zijn die een chipset met DDR-support voor Intel-processoren uitbrengt. Later zou ook een versie voor de Athlon moet uitkomen.

Op het lijstje met specs staan interessante zaken als SMP-support, (natuurlijk) DDR-support, 64bit 66mhz PCI en AGP 4X en support voor meerdere chipsets op 1 moederbord, wat allemaal doet vermoeden dat dit geen budgetsetje gaat worden.

Opvallend is wel dat Micron pas later een eigen southbridge uitbrengt. De Samurai kan voorlopig gecombineerd worden met southbridges van Intel en VIA":

Micron is planning for quantity shipments of Samurai DDR this fall. They will first ship the Intel compatible chipsets, and later release the AMD counterparts if DDR memory sales meet the projected estimates.. Micron developed the Samurai chipset for a very important reason: money. Currently the lead developer of the DDR SDRAM standard, they have also placed a large amount of money into DDR development. By releasing DDR chipsets with support for all current x86 CPUs, they have upped their stake in the memory market. Micron is already the United State's largest memory manufacturer and their sales will benefit by offering a DDR chipset. The chipset will first appear in OEM systems, and slowly move to the consumer marketplace. Volume production of the Samurai DDR will start this winter and will position Micron as a serious threat to other chipset manufacturers.

While you probably won't be utilizing the Micron Samurai DDR chipset in your desktop this year, it does provide a great deal of insight into future technologies. Micron has once again surprised the market by offering something that others haven't. It is even rumored that upcoming AMD and VIA DDR chipsets will be built using licensed technology from Micron. Could it be that Micron could be the next big player? If Samurai DDR gains its projected market, then Micron has a great chance of offering serious market competition.

[CoSD]Headbanger bracht ons een link naar The Register alwaar wordt gemeld dat Intel's Fab 18 fabriek in Isreal de komende zes weken een miljoen Pentium 4 1.7GHz processoren zal produceren. Hieronder een gedeelte:

Chipzilla has ordered its plant in Israel, Fab 18, to drop everything and produce 5,000 Pentium 4 wafers - each containing around 200 little P4s - within six weeks.

Sources close to Fab 18 tell The Reg that these chips will be rated at 1.7GHz.

Fab 18 is used to dealing with abrupt U-turns. Until March, the plant had been churning out loads of Timna system on a chip (SoC) processors, but switched over to Pentium IIIs in early April and has shipped 10 million Coppermines since then. [So how come there's still a shortage, then? - Ed].

Ome Tom heeft weer eens tijd gevonden om een flinke blurb te publiceren. In deze blurb heeft hij het over het overclocken van de AMD Duron en Thunderbird, iets wat misschien toch niet zo gemakkelijk gaat worden als gedacht, kraakt hij Rambus weer eens flink af, heeft hij wat verontrustend nieuws over de snelste GeForce2 kaart en viert hij een nieuw bezoekers record: 20,7 miljoen pageviews in de maand Juni.

Het grootste gedeelte van zijn blurb gaat over het overclocken van de AMD Duron en Thunderbird, hij heeft namelijk een mailtje van AMD gekregen waarin wordt verteld dat de Thunderbird & Duron uitgerust gaan worden met een multiplier lock. Voor het geval de multiplier niet veranderd kan worden op het moederbord heeft Tom een leuke theorie: het veranderen van de contacten op de CPU die vertellen op welk voltage en welke multiplier de CPU moet draaien , voorlopig is er nog een klein probleempje... het veranderen van de contactjes is ze nog niet gelukt:

This general statement doesn't really make clear what kind of overclocking will be possible and which kind won't, but I consider it as a positive outlook. The processors that I received were not marked as engineering samples, but looked completely authentic. None of them was locked though. This makes it look as if the processors that are currently shipping might still not be locked yet.

If we were to choose which 32 MB GeForce 2 GTS card we would want in our systems, it would be the ASUS V7700. With a reputation for high quality, the V7700 would win a place in our system due to the very useful built-in hardware monitoring. No longer will such a feature cost an arm and a leg more than the competing cards, but the V7700 proved to be only $9 more than the least expensive GeForce 2 GTS card that we could find: the Leadtek WinFast GeForce 2 GTS.

The line between the V7700 and the other GeForce 2 GTS cards is not as clear as we would like it to be. As stated before, there really is no clear winner, as each card seems to have its own powers and flaws.

As far as 64 MB GeForce 2 GTS cards are concerned, it seems that your only viable option right now is the 3D Prophet II GTS 64MB. With very good retail availability, the Guillemot/Hercules card is in a very prime position to win the hearts for those in need of the most speed. The only thing to be careful of are those pesky DVI-output issues that some users seem to be having. Contact Guillemot/Hercules before you buy this card for use with your DVI-enabled flat panel, just to make sure you will not have a output-less card on your hands.

biobak schrijft dat Anandtech een review heeft gemaakt van de Asus CUSL2, een plankje gebaseerd op de Intel i815 chipset. Deze plank heeft bijna alles wat je van een plank verwacht: 6 PCI, 2 CNR, 1 AGP, 7 USB en 3 DIMM sloten. Ook heeft Asus genoeg features in de plank gestopt om alle overclockers blij te maken, van 66 naar 216MHz in stapjes van 1MHz is alles behalve slecht. Bij Anandtech waren ze ook erg tevreden over deze plank en hebben ze de fel begeerde (?) editors choice award toegekend :

Interestingly enough, additional FSB speeds are opened up for 133 MHz CPU's when the memory clock is turned down to 3/4 of the FSB speed. Those FSB speeds reach up to a phenomenal 216 MHz, although it's unlikely that anyone will be able to use such high speeds, especially with all Intel CPU's multiplier locked. However, the flexibility of FSB speeds available in 1 MHz increments in most cases is very useful for tweaking the most out of your CPU, regardless of what type of CPU you're using. The independent selection of FSB-SDRAM-PCI ratio certainly comes in handy when you're exploring the limits of your CPU and RAM simultaneously.

ASUS has raised the bar once again with the CUSL2 and other manufacturers should now know what to shoot for. The CUSL2 is a a board that should satisfy anyone looking for a top notch i815 solution.

So here's the fix, which you should only try if you're familiar with editing the Registry. Launch regedit.exe, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer, and find the Build key. You'll see that its value is 5.00.3103.1000. Change this to the correct value of 53103.1000 and Office help will work.

Got Apex? heeft een review gemaakt van de Outrageous GeForce2 GTS, de tweede GeForce2 die standaard met Ramsinks is uitgerust. Deze Ramsinkjes zijn volgens de reviewer een stuk beter dan die op de Prophet II, wat je ook wel wilt geloven als je weet dat het geheugen naar 420MHz kon overclocken. Naast tweak vriendelijk zit er ook nog een goede software bundel bij en een prijskaartje van 275 dollar:

Bij Hardwareinfo hebben ze 11 koelers aan de tand gevoeld en daarvan een flink verslag online gemikt. Hieronder een grafiekje van de temperaturen onder invloed van de verschillende koelers.

De conclusie is hieronder te lezen:

We kunnen drie klassen onderscheiden wat betreft de hier behandelde Slot A superkoelers. Aan de top hebben we de GlobalWin VOS32+ en ook, hetzij iets minder, de Computernerd FAK7X2HM (Heavy Metal), de Alpha P-7125 variant die direct op de CPU gaat. Daarna komt de middenmoot die ook goed is, maar toch zeker niet bij de absolute top behoort. Daarin zitten de overige koelers met uitzondering van de Cooler Master met één fan.

Met die laatstgenoemde koeler hebben we de 'onderklasse'. Deze koeler heeft als enige voordeel dat hij geruisloos is. Hij is wel relatief duur en koelt niet goed. Maar, teruggaand naar de middenmoot: in de middenmoot is, zoals ook al eerder werd gezegd, budget, koelcapaciteit en geluidsproductie goed tegen elkaar uit te meten. Maakt niet uit wat jij belangrijker vindt: in de middenmoot vind je vast wat je wil.

Drie koelers springen er in de middenmoot extra uit: De Titan Majesty IV is erg mooi en erg stil. Een goede keuze als je geen prijs stelt op veel gezoem van koelers in je kast. De GlobalWin FLK32 en de Cooler Master DP2-5H54 zijn daarentegen heerlijk goedkoop!
