Bij deze weer een compliment voor [CoSD]Headbanger, die het nieuws steeds weer netjes voorbakt. Mochten we in nood zitten, kom je wat mij betreft in aanmerking voor de functie van nieuwsposter.

Edge.org heeft een zeer interessant artikel gepubliseerd. In het artikel staat in 58 punten beschreven hoe David Gelernter (computerwetenschapper en docent) denkt dat we over een tijdje met computers om zullen gaan. Zo heeft hij revolutionaire ideeën over het bestandssysteem. Bestandsnamen zouden niet verplicht moeten zijn, en een file zou ook in meerdere directories tegelijk kunnen staan. Of juist in geen één:

If you have three pet dogs, give them names. If you have 10,000 head of cattle, don't bother. Nowadays the idea of giving a name to every file on your computer is ridiculous.

A file should be allowed to have no name, one name or many names. Many files should be allowed to share one name. A file should be allowed to be in no directory, one directory, or many directories. Many files should be allowed to share one directory. Of these eight possibilities, only three are legal and the other five are banned — for no good reason.

You shouldn't have to put files in directories. The directories should reach out and take them. If a file belongs in six directories, all six should reach out and grab it automatically, simultaneously.[break]Verder moeten bestanden niet op naam gezocht kunnen worden, maar op inhoud. Hiervoor zal alle informatie worden opgeslagen in één lange "stroom", die weer is onderverdeeld in substromen. To continue work on an old document, put a copy at the head of your stream. Sending email, updating the calendar, opening a document are three instances of the same operation (put a document on a stream).

A substream (for example the "Fifth Avenue" substream) is like a conventional directory — except that it builds itself, automatically; it traps new documents as they arrive; one document can be in many substreams; and a substream has the same structure as the main stream — a past, present and future; steady flow.

Zeer vooruitstrevende gedachtes dus. Ik ben erg benieuwd wat ervan werkelijkheid zal worden en of over bijvoorbeeld 25 jaar dit artikeltje automatisch jullie "stream" binnen komt stromen. Tweak3D heeft vandaag een review weten te produceren over 'The Card Cooler XT'. Dit is de opvolger van de bekende Cardcooler en is uitgerust met grotere fans en met grilles zodat je, je vingers niet kan bezeren (wat natuurlijk weer heel vervelend is als je moet typen...). De geluidsproductie bleek op een heel acceptabel niveau te liggen en de 2 120mm fans bleken alle apparatuur ook nog eens goed te koeler: bij de reviewer ging zelfs de CPU temperatuur met 10ºF naar beneden. Niet alles bleek zonne- en maneschijn te zijn, de installatie van de Card Cooler kan in sommige kasten problemen opleveren, maar dit weerhield de reviewer er niet van om dit product een cijfer van een 9,5 toe te kennen :

Overall, performance was very good. I have used normal 120mm fans (as opposed to these quiet fans) and I believe these flow about 80% of the normal fan's CFM rating, or so it seems. This was plenty to keep the PC components cool, and the CPU temperature even dropped about 10ºF -- no joke! Before the CPU was running at around 110-115ºF and at LAN parties or other busy situations, I would have to drop the clock speed to prevent the PC from crashing. Now it hums along at around 98-100ºF, and occasionally it drops even lower.

[...] So this cooler definitely gets the job done and it's quiet. But what about the price? Isn't $34 pretty expensive for what you get?

I thought this at first, too. Then I went through and calculated the cost to build one for myself:
-2 x 120mm fan grilles: $3 each (+/- $0.50)
-2 x 120x25mm Sunon Quiet fans: $14 each (or so)
-Metal mounting rail for fans: $ ??? (you'd have to make your own...)
Excluding the rail that mounts the fan, you'd have to spend $34 just to buy the fans and grilles. And to think.. these are online prices. Good luck trying to build it cheaper without ordering components online.

The rail that mounts the fan is not only handy, but it looks cool and is high quality. It can bend a bit, but this is good.. because you may need to bend it to place it in some small cases. It gets the job done without having to drill holes in the case or use some awkward mounting technique.

De Card Cooler XT naast de Card Cooler:

In Japan hebben ze weer eens geluk, daar is namelijk de Panasonic DVD videorecorder verkrijgbaar. Hij maakt gebruik van 2e generatie DVD-RAM schijfjes, schijfjes waarop 4,7 GB aan gegevens passen oftewel tussen de 4 en 1 uur video, afhankelijk van de kwaliteit. Goedkoop is deze videorecorder niet te noemen, op het prijskaartje is namelijk het getal $2.335 te vinden:

Hitachi launched a camcorder based on DVD-RAM disks a couple of weeks ago, and now Panasonic is launching a home VCR that uses the same optical disc based system. That means the days of fuzzy pictures, slow rewinds and the frustration of looking for something on a tape could be gone forever.

PC Roddin heeft een vergelijking opgezet tussen Windows Millennium en Windows 98SE. Als modaal systeempje hadden ze een P3-800EB op een Asus P3V4X moederbord en een Elsa Gladiac 2GTS om voor het beeld te zorgen. WinMe bleek niet lekker stabiel te lopen, maar de installatie van de VIA 4-in-1 driver set scheen eigenlijk alles op te lossen. Winstone99 en SPECviewperf brachten geen grote verschillen aan het licht. Bij 3DMark 2000 bleef WinMe toch een beetje achter bij Win98SE:

Quake3 liet een heel andere verhouding zien. In resoluties tot en met 1024*768*16 blijkt WinMe een duidelijke voorsprong te nemen op z'n oudere broer, maar boven deze resolutie slaat Win98SE terug, zij het nipt.

Het grootste verschil is te vinden bij de Unreal Tournament benchmark. WinMe loopt hier duidelijk voorop. Reden hiervoor zou kunnen zijn dat de DirectX7 die met WinMe wordt meegeleverd nog meer voor Direct3D geoptimaliseerd is.

Natuurlijk is er nog ruimte voor verbetering. De meeste fabrikanten zullen pas na de officiële release van WinMe met drivers komen die voor het nieuwe OS zijn getweaked. Als laatse de conclusie van PC Roddin:

It seems that there is a lot of room for improvements for Windows Me. The performance seen throughout has been mixed with disappointments as well as some unexpected achievements. I had mentioned in the preview that I was expecting Microsoft to ship DirectX 8 with Windows Me. That, along with supported driver releases, could be the key to outstanding performance. There were some discrepancies with the OpenGL benchmarks that may or may not rely on the removal of real mode DOS. Hopefully soon, there will be a new breed of benchmarks for future testing with this new O/S. Until then, I feel Windows Me to be an overall large improvement over Windows 98 and would recommend the upgrade.

The overall rating for Windows Me is 4/5 HotRods. When driver and program support are available, this will be a 5 HotRod O/S.

Sommige mensen koelen hun systeem met water, anderen voegen dan ook nog een peltierelement toe en weer anderen voegen gewoon 4 peltierelementen toe . Bij Hexus.com hebben ze het laatste gedaan, en daarmee een Celeron 400 naar 744MHz overgeclocked. Naast 4 60 Watt peltier elementen hebben ze ook nog een bak water gekoeld met ijs in de strijd geworpen om deze overclock mogelijk te maken:

The copper plate touches the cpu. It has 4 60watt peltiers, in a 2x2 fashion , 2 high, 2 wide, cooling the copper plate. Needless to say the copper plate becomes so cold it freezes in seconds. So what cools the 4x60watts + cpu heat ~ 60watts = 300 watts of heat ?? , after trying 2 different heat exchangers I found a drilled solid aluminum block , 25 mm thick to be the best by a country mile, some 10 C better than even a copper back plate connected to a aluminum water cooled heat sink .. see previous coolers for a shot of that exchanger.

[...] From this picture you can see the water cooler is connected to a 50 litre polystyrene water reservoir, the reason for this is the pure water cooler cannot cope with 300watts, it cannot hold 3 litres of water below 30 C while coping with that amount of heat. After some thought about possible solutions, the following was the cheapest . Use more water and therefore have that heat spread more , therefore lower water temperature. Inside the 50 litre chilli box I cycle 10 ice packs every 6 hrs. This maintains the water temperature below 5 C. which in turn maintains the Aluminum block at 10 C ! .

Bij Anandtech hebben ze op deze langzame zondag een review online gezet van een nieuwe FIC KT133 mobo. Helaas is dit geen board voor Tweakers aangezien het bord geen multiplier unlock functie bezit zoals Asus en Abit wel van plan zijn. Ook de VCore aanpassing bleek op het geteste board (nog) niet te werken. Een ander punt is dat het moederbord wat duurder blijkt te zijn dan andere borden. Een oorzaak daarvan kan zijn dat het bord nogal groot is uitgevallen. Het vreemde is dat het linker gedeelte van het bord helemaal niet gebruikt is. Daar PCB best wel duur is, is het vreemd dat FIC voor dit ontwerp gekozen heeft. Een leuke feature is wel dat het bord geen errorpiepjes laat horen, maar nu eens een keer zegt wat er aan de hand is:

Our recommendation: don't jump on the first available Socket-A motherboard, no matter how tempting it may be. If you can, wait for the first wave of Socket-A motherboards to come through and pick the best of that bunch.

Het is enigszins anders, want als ik het artikel lees maak ik er uit op dat alleen pagina's en plaatjes worden opgeslagen. En hoewel dit een leuk initiatief is, lijkt het me niet mogelijk 'alles' op te slaan.

The Internet Archive is a massive collection of Web sites donated by the Alexa Internet, an arm of Amazon.com. It preserves those Web pages that would otherwise be wiped from computer memories and lost forever.

"The way we're able to pull this off is by having robots that go around and contact every Web server around the world periodically, and download each page -- each image -- off of every one of those sites," Kahle said.

Begun in 1996, the collection included only text until this year, when the Internet Archive began collecting images at a rate of about 200 images every five seconds.

Club Overclocker komt ons vandaag verblijden met een review van de 'Blizzard CPU Intercooler'. Dit is een waterkoelingskit met peltier element (70 watt), koperen coldplate, koperen koelblok en alle andere onderdelen die men nodig heeft om waterkoeling met succes te gaan gebruiken. Met deze kit kon de reviewer zijn Celeron II 566 naar 990MHz overclocken terwijl de temperatuur van -8° C naar 7° C steeg. Met de installatie, kwaliteit en gebruikers gemak zit het volgens de reviewer ook wel snor en deze kit krijgt dan ook als cijfer een 9 :

Many opportunists have introduced countless forms of liquid cooling to the overclocking community but unfortunately, most of these people and their ideas have disappeared. Intel is waarschijnlijk het laatste bedrijf waarvan je zou verwachten dat ze benchmarks zouden publiceren waarin PC133 geheugen gecombineerd met de i815 chipset sneller is dan RDRAM gecombineerd met de i820 chipset. Toch hebben ze precies dat gedaan, ze hebben op hun website benchmark resultaten gezet van de i815 chipset en i820 chipset. Dit was niet gedaan met de bedoeling om beide te vergelijken, de resultaten staan ook op verschillende pagina's, maar een kleine vergelijking wees uit dat PC133 volgens Intel's eigen benchmarks in 11 van de 14 gevallen sneller is :

In Intel's tests, the 815E used 128-megbytes of PC133CL2 SDRAMs from Micron Technologies Inc. The 820 chip set used 128-Mbytes of 800-MHz Direct RDRAMs from Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. for most tests. A 256-Mbyte Rambus memory size was used for the SPECint*2000, SPECfp*2000 and Content Creation Winstone tests.

On Late Friday, an Intel spokesman in Santa Clara confirmed that the tests were conducted by the same company test lab on both chip sets. "We stand behind our test results," he said. The spokesman cautioned that different benchmark tests may be more significant for one chip set and memory than the other, depending on applications.

Een nieuwe Internet Protocol gaat eraan komen: IPv6. De belangrijkste reden voor deze update is dat de IP-adressen op beginnen te raken, aangezien de laatste tijd steeds meer mensen en bedrijven gebruik gaan maken van het internet. Behalve meer adressen zal het nieuwe protocol ook veiliger zijn dan het oude (IPv4), dat al 25 jaar wordt gebruikt. WorldCom is op dit moment IPv6 aan het testen:

The first IP overhaul in 25 years promises quality, security and zillions of badly needed addresses.

WorldCom Inc. is testing IPv6 within its own VBNS (very-high-performance Backbone Network Service). The company runs a nationwide native IPv6-over-asynchronous transfer mode section on the VBNS at speeds of 155M bps. Right now, the driving force toward IPv6 "is increased addressing space, especially as Internet-enabled devices become prevalent," said Greg Miller, director of advanced Internet technology at WorldCom, in Clinton, Miss.

Under the IPv4 specification for Internet traffic, which uses a 32-bit addressing scheme, "we're going to run out of IP addresses eventually," Miller said. The 128-bit addressing scheme of IPv6 is enough to dedicate many thousands of IP addresses for every square inch of the Earth's surface, IETF officials said.[break]Ook Sprint doet onderzoek naar IPv6. WinInformant meldt dat de helpfunctie van Office 2000 niet meer werkt na het installeren van Internet Explorer 5.01 Service Pack 1. Het is dus ten zeerste af te raden om de browser-update te downloaden als je deze Office-versie gebruikt. Microsoft gaf afgelopen vrijdag ook toe dat het SP niet goed getest was, wat nu wel gebleken is. Een slechte zaak, want zoals WinInfo ook al zegt: een bugfix mag natuurlijk geen andere bugs veroorzaken:

After issuing a warning Friday that Internet Explorer (IE) 5.01 Service Pack 1 (SP1) wasn't properly tested by Microsoft, I quickly received word from numerous readers that this release breaks the Help system in Office 2000. "Help requires Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or greater," the warning reads. "You can install the latest version of IE from www.Microsoft.com.". And while this problem doesn't come as any surprise necessarily, it's still disheartening to realize that this company isn't doing what it needs to do to ensure that bug fixes don't introduce bugs of their own. Therefore, it is with some reluctance that I must advise users not to download and install IE 5.01 SP1.
