Het volk van Gamers Depot brengt ons een korte review van een van VIA's Reference KX133 moederbord. De conclusie wijkt niet veel af van de eerdere bevindingen; de KX133 chipset presteert iets beter dan de AMD's Irongate chipset en AGP 4x boeit nog steeds niet.

In all 3 tests, the KX133 chip proved that it does indeed have some potential to walk away from it's predecessor. For the most part it does win, with the exception of Quake 3 on the fastest setting.

I guess all of you who have been drooling over the wait for 4x AGP, can start picking up some towels to dry off. It's quite obvious that, at this point, 4x AGP doesn't mean jack squat for performance since we currently have no games that support this feature. It is still faster for the games to store the textures on the local memory of the video card. This is why we keep hearing about new video cards hitting the market with more and more RAM on them, like the Voodoo5 6000, which will have 128MB.

Since the performance delta between the two are so minimal, there might not be a huge compelling reason to go dump your current Athlon mobo just to get one that runs the KX133. However, if you're new to the platform, then you have every reason to go with the KX133.

ZDNet heeft een artikel in elkaar getimmerd over de race tussen Intel en AMD richting de 1GHz barrière. De schrijver meldt dat we al binnen een paar maanden de eerste desktop PC's met 1000MHz processors van beide fabrikanten mogen verwachten, hoewel de losse verkoop van de CPU's waarschijnlijk pas in het derde kwartaal zal beginnen. Deze 'limted edition' PC's van OEM's zullen dan ook vooral gericht zijn op high-end gamers met veel zakgeld.

AMD, meanwhile, is privately telling PC makers to expect availability of 1GHz Athlon chips in 60 days. Spokesman Drew Prairie would not comment on launch dates except to reiterate that AMD will have a 1GHz Athlon "by Q4 of this year."

"We don't plan on falling behind in the gigahertz race," said a source at the Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD. "We plan to offer competitive frequency at the same time as Intel."

[...] Intel's 1GHz Pentium III will be available in "limited quantities" at first.

"We will target 1GHz in the first half to people that can really appreciate it, such as PC enthusiasts, such as high-end gamers," Alfs said. "It really will be limited volume in Q2."

This means PC makers that cater to those market segments will likely see the gigahertz chip first. While 1GHz Pentium IIIs will be available in systems, they may not be available in other ways, such as in the reseller channel as boxed processors. Boxed versions of the 1GHz Pentium III may not be readily available until the third quarter of 2000.

Bij Sharky Extreme is een diepgaand artikel te vinden over de bekende ATi Rage Fury MAXX videokaart, bewapend met dual ATi Rage 128 Pro chippies en 64MB aan geheugen. Alternate Frame Rendering (AFR) produces benchmark numbers that are comparable to GeForce DDR, particularly in true color at high resolutions. Whether these numbers translate into an improved interactive experience will depend, in large part, on the successful resolution of timing and potential latency issues. Enabling a Triple Buffer improves the rate and fluidity of frames at the expense of reducing available local texture memory. Texture compression is one way to maximize local texture storage.

It is unfortunate that the AGP bus was not designed with provisions for multiple graphics processors. However, MAXX's lack of AGP texturing is not fatal. AGP will become more important for the transfer of geometry data, rather than textures, as games grow in triangle complexity. For performance at interactive frame rates, textures have to remain 'local' and that may necessitate a further increase in available local video memory beyond the current standard 32 megabytes.

Toen ik bij AnandTech aan het rondsurfen was kwam ik er achter dat één van de buddy's van Anand, Matthew Witheiler een review van de Creative Labs 3D Blaster Annihilator Pro geupt heeft. Hij is best te spreken over het kaartje aangezien het redelijk goed te overklokken is en het setje drivers van Creative Labs volgens hem ook goed in elkaar steekt:

Many of the DDR based GeForce cards on the market are almost indistinguishable from one another. Many contain the same features, options and rarely differ in quality. Creative Labs, however, stands a bit out of the pack due to its high availability, fast overclocked speeds, and unique driver set. First, let's examine the features of the card which make it unique.

What the 3D Blaster Annihilator Pro lacks in originality of board design, it makes up for with efficient cooling. It is always a pleasant surprise to have a card outperform its predecessors and Creative Labs did not disappoint. Also noteworthy is the fact that the reference design, even though it lacks some of the advanced features found on non-reference boards, cuts the cost and enhances the roll out time of a card. It was a bit surprising to find that Creative Labs did not include any TV-out support, a feature commonly found in DDR boards of this price. If you want to use the included WinDVD DVD decoder software to display DVD movies on your television, you are out of luck. The 2D quality of the board was fine at resolutions as high as 1600x1200, meaning that even larger monitors will be able to take advantage of the 3D Blaster Annihilator Pro's DDR power.

Bij GameFan is een kleine review neergemikt van de Hitachi CM811, een 21" monitor met een maximale refresh van 75Hz bij een resolutie van 1600 x 1200. Hieronder wat meer info uit de test:

Hitachi's .22 pitch is wonderful; I love it on its 19" monitors, and now this 21". Images look extremely sharp, with little to no warping. There's a bit of distortion in the higher resolutions, which is mostly noticeable in games like Quake 3, where the video cards are really strained. Distortion's going to be hard to avoid in anything this big without a colossal price tag, and for an entry-level monitor, the level of distortion's so low that it's not an issue. I think the quality of the display's quite good; I'd like to see a higher-speed video clock, but those cost money.

The controls were decent as well--not quite as user-friendly as the CM769 I had in here, but better than those of other monitors I've seen. My main problem with them is that there are a lot of buttons on the front, and it's hard to figure out what the more obscure ones do by their little pictures alone. Just in case you need to know: The rectangle with the star-like circle thingy means 'degauss.' The manual straightens out any confusion, but I'd still like to see Hitachi integrate its five-button design from the CM769.

Here's the part where I rant about my aim again. I kid you not--I was a literal rail god in Quake 3 Arena. Sure, that's a combined result of playing FPS games for seven years, LAN-like ping, a USB mouse and Everglide mouse pad and my awesome machine...but I had everything except the monitor before, and there's a huge difference. It's just plain easy to slap your crosshair on an opponent with a display this large. I tell you, I was smacking people down left and right, just like playing "Insta-gib" in Unreal Tournament. It really did make that big of a difference, and it was quite entertaining to watch the reactions of others victimized by my "ber-aim."

Storage Review heeft een review neer gemikt van de errug lekkere Quantum Atlas 10K II, een Ultra160 SCSI harddisk met een 10.000rpm toerental, 9.2GB platter grootte en een toegangstijd van 4.7 milliseconde. Al met al zorgt dit voor een extreem hoge performance: uit de benchmarks blijkt dat de Atlas 10K II met afstand sneller is dan de Seagate Cheetah 36LP en de oude Quantum Atlas 10K. In de ThreadMark data transfer test onder NT4 / NTFS is het verschil zelfs 50%!

he high-level results achieved by the Atlas are nothing less than awesome. In all six major categories, we found the Quantum drive besting the competition (again, the Cheetah 36LP) by double-digit margins. The 10k II is the first drive to break the 5000 KB/sec barrier in the Business Disk WinMark 99, racing past the Cheetah by over 24%. The Atlas also achieves impressive scores in the High-End Disk WinMark 99, placing nearly 15% faster than the Seagate feline. Margins in tests run in Windows NT 4.0 yield are of similar caliber. Here the Atlas trounces the Cheetah by 19% in the Business test and 24% in the High-End WinMark.

Verstappen.nl schrijft op hun nieuwspagina dat kabelboer UPC volgens de Radio Nieuws Dienst de nieuwe hoofdsponsor wordt van Arrows, het Formule 1 team van onze landgenoot Jos V:

Via UPC of Arrows konden we geen bevestiging krijgen van het nieuws en ook Huub Rothengatter was enigszins verbaasd: "Ik heb dezelfde berichten ontvangen maar laten we wachten op een eventuele bevestiging aanstaande maandag bij de perspresentatie van het team. Mocht het bericht kloppen dan is UPC uiteraard van harte welkom maar het bericht komt in ieder geval niet uit onze hoek dus kan ik er helaas ook niets over melden.". We zullen dus tot maandag geduld moeten hebben voordat kan blijken of het bericht inderdaad klopt.

T-Break heeft een review online gekegeld van de Creative PC-DVD Encore 8x kit bestaande uit een 8 speed DVD ROM drive en een Dxr3 hardware decoder. Die laatste bleek erg goed werken, in tegenstelling tot de 8x DVD drive:

The PC-DVD works as advertised with the Dxr3 providing impressive results even at high resolutions. My 17" was only capable of going upto 1280 x 1024 but even at that resolution, I couldn't detect any missed frames. Although I did spot some combing at high resolutions.

The DVD ROM drive on the other hand, did not perform well. First of all, it's extremely loud and when it starts to spin, it sounds like an airplane taking off. Secondly, I was unable to make a CD to CD "on the fly" copy with this drive on any speed greater than 4X. And finally, the eject button needed to be pressed several times for the tray to come out. One good thing about the drive was it's ability to read ISO burnt CD's. I had downloaded Caldera Open Linux ISO and this is the first DVD ROM that read the CD without any problem.

The Encore might not be a bad idea if you're planning on connecting your PC to a big screen TV with a bad ass sound system and are willing to put up with some of the annoyances of the DVD ROM. I like the Dxr3 hardware decoder but the 8X drive prevents me from recommending the Encore for ordinary desktop use.

CubicQ stuurde " De Universiteit Twente sluit binnenkort haar studenten en medewerkers die in de stad wonen aan via een 2 MBit ADSL verbinding. Voor de echte die-hards van de UT (die natuurlijk gewoon op de Campus wonen en al een 100Mbit verbinding hebben) maakt dat natuurlijk niet zo veel uit. Belangrijk voor de 'gewone' mensen is dat de universteit Twente dit later gaat uitbreiden voor niet-medewerkers en studenten":

De woonhuizen van UT-studenten en medewerkers worden binnenkort permanent aangesloten op het snelle datanetwerk van de universiteit. Door de nieuwe techniek ADSL wordt thuis internetten mogelijk met meer dan 2 Megabit per seconde, minstens 30 keer sneller dan het huidige ISDN. Dat is volgens het CIV zelfs voldoende voor videostromen op 'full screen' tv-kwaliteit.

Als eerste universiteit in Europa kan de UT met deze infrastructuur haar studenten thuis een digitale leeromgeving aanbieden met dezelfde kwaliteit als op de campus zelf. De nieuwe voorzieningen zijn mogelijk dankzij een pilotproject dat door Gigaport is toegekend aan het Enschedese telecombedrijf Casene en de Universiteit Twente.

GigaPort is het nationale project waarin overheid, bedrijfsleven en kennisinstellingen streven naar een voorsprong voor Nederland in geavanceerde Internettechnologie, zowel qua ontwikkeling als qua gebruik. Een van de projecten om het aanbod van breedband internettoegang te versnellen is de ADSL Access Infrastructure pilot. Op basis van een Europese tender heeft GigaPort hiervoor de combinatie Casene/UT uitverkoren. Gigaport betaalt bijna een miljoen gulden voor een proef van twee jaar met 250 ADSL-aansluitingen vanuit een deel van Enschede. UT en Casene hebben besloten zich niet tot deze opdracht te beperken, maar meteen tot een definitieve en veel bredere samenwerking te komen:

* Casene zal in de loop van dit jaar een veel groter gebied voor ADSL ontsluiten: heel Enschede, Hengelo, Almelo, Borne, Haaksbergen en Oldenzaal. Dat is bijna heel Twente.

* Verder krijgt de UT door het project aansluiting op het ADSL-netwerk van Casene voor Twentse scholen. Dat geeft nieuwe mogelijkheden voor een aantal samenwerkingsprojecten met de scholen voor basis- en voortgezet onderwijs.

* Ook levert Casene de UT eigen glasvezels naar dezelfde Twentse steden voor wetenschappelijke samenwerking met het high tech bedrijfsleven in de regio. Met het contract tussen Casene en UT zullen op termijn enkele miljoenen zijn gemoeid.

[...] Well I've done some testing with the new Via 4 in 1 drivers, specifically gaming testing with Quake Arena, and here are the results. Everything seems to be the same. I saw no performance increase or decrease with the new drivers, and all of the AGP features are still enabled with the KX133 with no tweaks. I used an Athlon 500 with 256MB of NEC VCM SDRAM, and a Diamond TNT 2 Ultra for the testing.

PanMan schrijft: "XS4ALL komt nu ook met een snellere ADSL variant, waarbij je 1024kBit downstream en 256kBit upstream hebt. Er zijn wel ook 4 IP's inbegrepen (dus geen gateway draaien). Fast ADSL kost helaas wel 175 gulden per maand. Cistron blijkt voorlopig dus nog de beste kansen te bieden voor de 'grootverbruikers' onder ons ":

Na het eerder geïntroduceerde ADSL-abonnement van 99 gulden all-in per maand, introduceert XS4ALL een tweede, sneller ADSL-pakket voor thuisgebruik. Dit tweede Fast ADSL abonnement kent een snelheid van 1024 kilobit per seconde 'downstream', dat wil zeggen, van internet naar uw computer toe, en een 'upstream' van 256 kilobit per seconde. Er blijkt weer eens een bugje in de Distributed.net client te zijn gevonden: de OGR-24 client berekent afhankelijk van het platform verschillende resultaten. Dit kan uiteraard niet de bedoeling zijn, D.net heeft daarom besloten om het complete OGR-24 contest opnieuw te laten beginnen:

Most of you should know by now that for the past week, we have been working on the OGR-24 project, the search for the 24 mark Optimal Golomb Ruler. So far, we have completed approximately 24% of the total stubs, mostly smaller ones. Unfortunately, we have noticed a problem while analyzing returned data in the master log files. Some clients have been returning inordinately large node counts for completed stubs. Once we reran the stubs in question for confirmation, we found that the node count corruption indicated an endianness problem, where platforms like SPARC order groups of bytes in memory differently from platforms like Intel x86.

On Tuesday evening, we were able to pinpoint the missing code and operational circumstances that caused this problem. There was a missing ntohl() call in the buffer handling code. Most of the time this caused no problems, but when sharing buffer files between certain combinations of platforms, the count of how many nodes had been completed would be corrupted. Unfortunately, due to the circumstances necessary for this bug to manifest itself, our testing did not identify it.

The biggest problem with this bug is the difficulty of detecting it. The clients return the number of nodes done in each stub to the master. If the number of nodes actually done is greater than 2^32 (about 4 billion), then the bug is detectable due to the way the bytes get swapped (an impossibly high node count is returned). However, if the number of nodes is less than 2^32, it is not guaranteed that we will always be able to identify bad return values.

In light of the above, we have decided to suspend the OGR-24 project. Clients that are currently working on OGR will revert back to RC5 the next time they connect to the network; you can force a connection by shutting the client down, deleting the OGR buffers, and restarting the client.

We will need to build new clients to address this bug and to allow us to discard results from bad clients. As a consequence, we will have the opportunity to improve some other aspects of client operation. In particular, we plan to add more configurable checkpointing and a better display of progress.

Having built new clients and added code to discard faulty stubs, we will restart OGR-24 from the beginning, this time with much smaller 5-stubs instead of the 4-stubs used in the initial run. All is not lost from this past run; we will use its results as an additional verification of future work.

Koen Crijns, bekend van Hardwareinfo.net, heeft een review van de Hercules 3D Prophet DDR/DVI GeForce kaart op z'n site geplaatst. Naast een TV-output heeft dit model ook een Digital Video Interface waarmee TFT schermen rechtstreeks digitaal op de videokaart aan te sluiten zijn. Met zijn overklokbaarheid zit het trouwens ook wel ok:

Het lijkt er bijna op dat de medewerkers van Hercules zelf de nVidia fabriek binnen lopen en daar de beste exemplaren van de chips uitzoeken: zo verschrikkelijk ver konden we de videokaart overklokken. De chip bleef tot aan de maximale instelling van het overklokscherm (160 MHz i.p.v. 125 MHz) 100% stabiel werken. Maar niet alleen de chip was ver over te klokken: ook het geheugen kon flink worden opgeklokt. Bij de maximale 380 MHz ontstonden er een aantal kleine fouten in het beeld, maar tot en met 375 MHz (i.p.v. 300 MHz) bleef de kaart uitstekend werken. We hebben op een aantal overklok-standen de Quake 3 timedemo nogmaals gedraaid, zowel in 1024x768 als in 1600x1200. In de review van de AMD Athlon 850 MHz hebben we kunnen zien dat de timedemo daar echt aan de grens van de videokaart zit: het verwisselen van een Athlon 600 MHz naar een Athlon 850 MHz had bij deze timedemo’s met een GeForce videokaart al geen nut meer. De performance winst van het overklokken van de videokaart telt hier dus meteen door in de uiteindelijke framerate.

Bij CDR-Info lees ik dat Teac de CD-W512 CD-ReWriter heeft aangekodigd. Opvallend is dat deze 12x brander eerst als ATAPI versie in mei op de markt komt. Pas later volgt de SCSI uitvoering. Meer informatie wordt pas vrij gegeven op de CeBIT beurs, die vandaag overigens van start gaat.

We knew that Yamaha would release 8x RW drive next month(s) but we didn't know that 12/8/32 CDR-W drives would come so soon. Apparently Teac made the suprise and will show a 12/8/32 drive in Cebit!

"..With performance data Teac will bring the CD-Recorder CD-W512 to 12X/8X/32X approximately starting from May among the people. First only as ATAPI version, some months later also than SCSI version. Information about the new drive does not receive you yet times on the Cebit...!.."
