The PC-DVD works as advertised with the Dxr3 providing impressive results even at high resolutions. My 17" was only capable of going upto 1280 x 1024 but even at that resolution, I couldn't detect any missed frames. Although I did spot some combing at high resolutions. The DVD ROM drive on the other hand, did not perform well. First of all, it's extremely loud and when it starts to spin, it sounds like an airplane taking off. Secondly, I was unable to make a CD to CD "on the fly" copy with this drive on any speed greater than 4X. And finally, the eject button needed to be pressed several times for the tray to come out. One good thing about the drive was it's ability to read ISO burnt CD's. I had downloaded Caldera Open Linux ISO and this is the first DVD ROM that read the CD without any problem.
The Encore might not be a bad idea if you're planning on connecting your PC to a big screen TV with a bad ass sound system and are willing to put up with some of the annoyances of the DVD ROM. I like the Dxr3 hardware decoder but the 8X drive prevents me from recommending the Encore for ordinary desktop use.
