Readers of the popular Slashdot.org website voted the Free Software distribution the "Most Deserving of a $2000 award". It was credited with being a top distribution and for upholding the Free Software ideals that Linux is based upon. The award was accepted on Debian's behalf by Sean Perry, Joey Hess, and David Coe. Betanews bericht dat de Franse regering een rechtszaak overweegt tegen de Britse en Amerikaanse overheid, die met hun Echelon spionage netwerk inbreuk zouden maken op de privacy van Franse bedrijven en overheidsinstanties:

EBN Online schrijft dat de introductie van Windows 2000, komende woensdag, een (voor geheugenfabrikanten) gunstige invloed zal hebben op de vraag naar geheugenchips. Voor ons consumenten kan dit betekenen dat de prijzen weer stijgen, iets om gedegen rekening mee te houden wanneer je van plan bent om op korte termijn een reepje te scoren:

Analysts predict 128 Mbytes will be the default loadout for a corporate Windows 2000 machine, up from the 64 Mbytes typically used for corporate Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 9X-based systems.

[...] Gartner Group Inc., Stamford, Conn., estimates that only 15% to 20% of users will upgrade their current machines for the Windows 2000 transition, but that number will jump to 40% by the end of 2001. Ondanks de problemen rond de produktie van Rambus geheugens en de enorme afgang die Intel met het i820 Rambus fiasco beleefde, is Rambus door Intel toch uitverkozen als geheugen architectuur voor de Willamette processor. Intel ontwikkelt voor de Willamette een nieuwe chipset met de naam 'Tehema', die volgens bronnen van EBN Online in feite een upgrade is van de huidige i840 chipset met dual channel Rambus support:

Intel Corp. is making Direct Rambus DRAM the key memory for its next-generation Willamette processor, which will be spotlighted next week at the Intel Developers' Forum.

Sony heeft afgelopen vrijdag een presentatie gegeven van de DVD-Video playback mogelijkheden van de Playstation II. Daarmee positioneert het de PS2 frontaal tegenover dedicated DVD-Video spelers, die ondanks een hardwarematige decoder geen duidelijk betere beeldkwaliteit leveren. De Playstation II wordt naar verwachting op 4 mei op de Japanse markt geïntroduceerd. De prijs ligt rond de 365 dollar, niet veel duurder dan een DVD-Video speler:

When SCE [Sony Computer Entertainment] announced its plans for DVD-Video at its introduction of Playstation 2 last September, observers said the picture quality of DVD on a Playstation 2 would not match that of dedicated DVD-Video players, which employ a hardwired decoder chip, while Playstation 2 processes DVD-Video in software. But at its demonstration Friday, SCE compared the DVD-Video playback function to high-end DVD-Video players from Matsushita, Pioneer and Sony. Ken Kutaragi, president of SCE, said the interlaced scanning reproduction of the DVD-Video feature compared well with the quality of the high-end players.

"Picture quality is better than DVD-Video players in the same price range [as Playstation 2] and in some case competitive with high-end ones, too," said Reiji Asakura, an audio/video critic and vice chairman of the Society of Picture Quality Engineers.

Uit een onderzoek van Interview-NSS is gebleken dat het aantal internetaansluitingen in Nederland in de maand januari is blijven hangen op hetzelfde level als dat van 2 maand geleden:

Voorafgaande aan deze afvlakking was er juist sprake van een spectaculaire groei. Volgens Interview-NSS kwam dat destijds door de opkomst van gratis Internetproviders als Freeler en Zon.

OEMs zijn niet gelukkig met het huidige beleid van Intel om nieuwe processors aan te kondigen reeds lang voordat deze daadwerkelijk geleverd kunnen worden. De leveringsproblemen die hier als gevolg van zijn ontstaan hebben al gezorgd voor een stijging van de verkoopprijs van PIII processors. De snelle 750 en 800MHz PIII's blijken ondertussen onmogelijk verkrijgbaar te zijn. Handeleren speculeren dat de supplies van deze modellen exclusief richting de top OEMs (Dell, Gateway) stroomt, in een poging van Intel om deze belangrijke OEMs nog enigzins tevreden te houden. De minder snelle 500Mhz en 550Mhz zijn door de enorme vraag ook nauwelijks aan te slepen:

“[The] 800's are brutal, very tight,” said a purchaser at one top-tier OEM. “But 733-MHz and 667-MHz [chips] are loosening up a little bit. Five hundreds are the tightest, with the 550's right behind them.”

Several chip brokers suspect Intel is keeping supplies flowing to top-tier OEMs at the expense of lower-tier customers. An Intel spokesman said the Santa Clara, Calif., company will strive to keep its highest-volume customers happy, meeting their initial forecasts and building supply during the quarter.

[...] The availability issue is stretching lead times-even at leading PC makers. Sources at several OEMs attribute the phenomenon to what they're calling Intel's newfound tendency toward “paper launches,” where the company announces a product in advance of its ability to meet demand. PALO ALTO (ANP) - Een internetbedrijf in Californië dat deze week is aangevallen door hackers, zegt dat de piraten toegang hebben gekregen tot de credit-cardnummers van zijn cliënten. Het is de eerste aanwijzing dat piraten die deze week massaal actief waren op het internet, daadwerkelijk gevoelige informatie buitmaken.

Volgens het getroffen bedrijf, RealNames uit San Carlos, zijn de vertrouwelijke gegevens nog niet illegaal gebruikt. Dat kan er op wijzen dat de hacker slechts wilde aantonen dat hij de kraak kon zetten en niet uit winstbejag handelde. Dit is een vaak voorkomend gebruik onder hackers.

Maandag begon in de VS een storm van aanvallen op populaire internetpagina's. De toegang tot sites van onder meer Yahoo, Amazon.com en CNN werd geblokkeerd. Vertrouwelijke informatie werd niet gestolen. De politie heeft nog geen duidelijk spoor van de daders, die netwerken van derden inzetten voor de aanvallen.

Vrijdag maakte de Universiteit van Californië bekend dat hackers hun computer hebben misbruikt voor de kraken.

ZDNet schrijft dat de Windows 2000 in maart 2001 opgevolgd zal worden door 'Whistler', een gecombineerd consumer en business besturingssysteem gebaseerd op de NT kernel. Daarnaast zullen er ook Server, Advanced Server en Datacenter versies komen. Een jaar later zal Whistler vervolgens afgelost worden door een Windows versie die op dit moment bekend staat onder de codenaam 'Blackcomb' (deze naam slaat op een heuveltje nabij Seattle):

While Whistler will be the first full-fledged upgrade to Windows 2000, it won't be the release upon which the company is betting its next-generation architecture. Microsoft's Next Generation Windows Services platform -- details of which the company is expected to make public in early May -- will rely on Blackcomb, not Whistler, as one of its key enabling products, say sources.

As Microsoft is still in the early stages of working on its Whistler feature list, it seems to have done little to concretize its planned Blackcomb lineup.

GA-Source denkt ons te mogen verblijden met een review van de Diamond Viper II. Niet de snelste kaart, maar wel redelijk sympathiek geprijst en met interessante features zoals S3TC en T&L (wanneer 't gefixt is):

The Viper II definitely has some potential, and the price is right. The thing to recall is that the Savage 2000 is not meant to be a competitor to the GeForce cards, but rather be reasonably priced high powered feature rich video card. In my opinion it works out to being worthy competitor to the Ultra TNT/2s. It definitely fits that spot well both performance and price wise, and I would definitely prefer having the Viper II in my machine than any of the Ultra TNT/2s available. If you are looking for the ultimate in performance, then this is not your best bet in cards. If you are looking for a feature rich reasonably fast card that is available for below $150 mail order, then the Viper II fits the bill.

JumpStart schrijft: "Dit moet iedere DPC freak doen watertanden: de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) koopt voor het luttele bedrag van 30 miljoen Nederlandse guldens een nieuwe nationale supercomputer voor het rekencentrum SARA. Het systeem van Silicon Graphics heeft 1000 gekoppelde CPUs, 1 Terabyte aan geheugen en trekt meer dan duizend miljard berekeningen per seconde. Verder is er 10 Terabyte aan opslagcapaciteit en 100 Terabyte backup/archiverings space. Op 22 November zal dit beestje in gebruik genomen worden, waarna het de komende 6 jaar mee moet gaan. Over 3 jaar zal er nog een tussentijdse upgrade volgen waardoor 'ie nog eens 3 keer zo snel wordt! Dus tweakers: "Eat your heart out!" ":

De Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) heeft besloten tot de aanschaf van een nieuwe nationale supercomputer die de snelste van Europa zal zijn. Daartoe hebben NWO, het Amsterdamse rekencentrum SARA en leverancier SGI Nederland b.v. op advies van de Stichting Nationale Computerfaciliteiten (NCF) een overeenkomst gesloten. De nieuwe nationale supercomputer, een Scalable Node-1 (SN-1), is een massaal parallel systeem, waarbij het totale vermogen door meer dan duizend processors wordt verkregen. Deze constructie maakt ruim een biljoen (10**12) berekeningen per seconde mogelijk. De SN-1, waarmee een bedrag van dertig miljoen gulden is gemoeid, vervangt de Cray C90 die elke seconde niet verder kwam dan, een toch nog steeds respectabele, twaalf miljard berekeningen. De praktische vooruitgang is een circa dertig maal hogere capaciteit dan de oude supercomputer, de piekprestatie honderd maal. Deze machine zal de komende zes jaar de nieuwe top vormen van de nationale computerinfrastructuur voor het fundamenteel en toegepaste onderzoek.

[eNeRGy] bracht ons een linkje naar dit artikel van ZDNet, waarin geschreven wordt dat Windows 2000 op dit moment nog 63.000 openstaande bugs kent. Je zou er als Windows bugfixer bijna moedeloos van worden, toch zegt Microsoft van plan te zijn deze bugs allemaal te fixen voor de release van de volgende Windows 2000 versie:

More than 21,000 "postponed" bugs, an indeterminate number of which Microsoft is characterizing as "real problems." Others are requests for new functionality, and others reflect "plain confusion as to how something is supposed to work."

More than 27,000 "BugBug" comments. These are usually notes to developers to make something work better or more efficiently. According to Microsoft, they tend to represent "unfinished work" or "long-forgotten problems."

Overall, there are more than 65,000 "potential issues" that could emerge as problems, as discovered by Microsoft's Prefix tool. Microsoft is estimating that 28,000 of these are likely to be "real" problems.

Hielko heeft een artikeltje geschreven over de 3dfx T-Buffer. In het artikel vind je naast uitleg ook een aantal screenshots die de mogelijkheden van full scene anti-aliasing, motion blur, depth of field blur en soft reflections illustreren:

The T-Buffer looks promising, especially Full Scene Anti-Aliasing because it's going to work with every game. But I think the other features are certainly not so useful because they will need at first a game which is using the Glide API and second a game which has support for the T-Buffer.

It's also a problem that the fill-rate is decreasing a lot when the T-Buffer is used although I don't have any benchmarks about the card (nor does someone else).

Toevallig heb ik hier ook nog een 3dfx CD'tje liggen vol met anti-aliasing en motion blur screenshots. Hier een voorbeeldje (minimale JPEG compressie, uitgesneden dus niet gedownscaled):

Bij de andere voorbeelden is het verschil met anti-aliasing overigens minder goed zichtbaar. Het probleem met FSAA is dat het op lage resoluties wel erg nuttig is, maar snel een wazig beeld geeft, terwijl het op hoge resoluties te zwaar is en bovendien minder zin heeft omdat aliasing dan minder opvallend is.

Nospam weet waar de tweaker behoefte aan heeft: "Las zoals gewoonlijk het dagelijkse portie t.net nieuws en kwam toen dat artikeltje over die 3dfx babe tegen (Nederlandse Lara Croft nog wat...). Wat blijkt nou, ik had haar al eerder gezien als Linux / Open BSD babe . De versies die ik ken zijn wat aangepast, en er zijn nog een aantal andere foto's met andere babes die Linux en OpenBSD promoten (zonder dat ze het weten... hehe)":

Riva3D heeft een reaktie gepost op de meest recente samenzweringstheorie van ome Tom, met ditmaal AMD in het pakje van de boze boef (eerder werden o.a. Intel en 3dfx door Tom in deze positie geschoven). Volgens Tom worden bugs bewust door AMD achterhouden en worden bugfixes gepresenteerd als nieuwe features (Super Bypass). Riva3D beweert het tegenovergestelde, namelijk dat de bugs (in dit geval GeForce AGP problemen) bekend waren bij de moederplank fabrikanten, maar dat Tom dit niet heeft opgemerkt vanuit zijn tempel :

To suggest that the Super-Bypass feature was a bug-fix is bullcrap. Neither AMD nor NVIDIA detected any problem with the Irongate (751) chipset and GeForce cards in their own internal testing. Nor did I when running benchmarks when we first reviewed the GeForce last year. It wasn't until end-users began reporting problems that the issue even came to light. As a result, software methods of fixing the problem were explored as it seemed that a software fix was possible. Why? Because the Irongate AGP line noise issue does not manifest itself in every combination of motherboards and GeForce cards. I know this for a fact, since one of our systems shows the problem, while the other does not. The GeForce being susceptible to AGP line noise has nothing to do with AMD. Did he ever stop to think that excessive AGP line noise can be caused by erratic AC power or house wiring, or a myriad of other things? There's so many variables that could account for the difference in some systems functioning without a hitch while others do not that to blame it on any one issue is absurd. Tom could have rightly called it a bug if NO VIDEO CARDS worked in 2x AGP, but unfortunately for him, the GeForce has been the only card exhibiting any difficulties.
