The Register bericht dat AMD gisteren heeft aangekondigd dat het totaal aantal geleverde Athlons uit Fab30 in Dresden de mijlpaal van 2 miljoen heeft gehaald. Deze prestatie is des te hoger gezien het feit dat dit aantal in september nog op 1 miljoen lag. Er is echter nog genoeg ruimte voor uitbreiding; op dit moment wordt slechts 30 procent van de capaciteit van Fab30 gebruikt. AMD hoopt dit tegen het einde van dit jaar op te voeren naar 50% en in 2003 naar 100%, als de doelstelling om 30% van de x86-processormarkt te beheersen wordt gehaald.

In december van het volgende jaar moet de fabriek gereed zijn voor de 0,13 micron productielijn:

Hot Hardware had vandaag voor ons wat informatie over DFI's Socket A moederbord met AMD 761 northbridge, de AK76. Het plankje heeft een echte no-nonsense layout: geen onboard sound, geen onboard video, geen ISA en geen CNR/AMR meuk. Wel aanwezig zijn 6x PCI, AGP en een aantal handigheidjes als hardware monitoring, multiplier dipswitches, STR (Suspend To RAM) en ATA100. Het enige nadeeltje van de layout is dat er slechts twee DDR gleuven aanwezig zijn:

NeoSeeker heeft een review in elkaar gedraaid van de Epox 3VCA2+, een moederbord gebaseerd op VIA's Apollo Pro 133 chipset. Het plankje heeft 1xAGP/4xPCI/1xAMR/3xDIMM sloten aan boord. Deze verbeterde versie van de 3VCA2 heeft nu naast het verhogen van de busspeed in stapjes van 1MHz ook de mogelijkheid om de core voltage van de CPU te wijzigen. De prestaties en stabiliteit van het bord zijn goed, maar niet opvallend. Dit moederbord moet het dan ook hebben van zijn prijs:

The Epox 3VCA2+ is a solid motherboard. It is designed to save the consumer money, while still offering some pretty good overclocking capabilities. For savvy consumers it’s onboard audio, lack of fancy features, and support for older CPUs (and Cyrix CPUs) will help reduce the hit to the pocket book. So if you are looking to save a few dollars, but still want the ability to overclock, the 3VCA2+ is a great buy.

Bij GA-Hardware is een review gemaakt van de Digitheatre van VideoLogic. Deze speakerset bestaat uit een subwoofer/versterker, twee frontspeakers, twee surroundspeakers, een centerspeaker en een decoderunit (met afstandsbediening). Wat betreft de geluidssterkte is deze speakerset wat minder dan de concurrentie. Dolby Digital is op deze set echter zeer goed te beluisteren, zelfs als de speakers niet optimaal opgesteld zijn. Meer kwaliteit dan kwantiteit dus . Ondanks dat dit eigenlijk computerspeakers zijn, kun je ze bijvoorbeeld ook bij een standalone DVD speler gebruiken.

Overall I was quite pleased with the performance of the speakers. They have just about every feature that you would want from a good set of 5.1 speakers for a computer. Unless you use your computer as your main entertainment system I would really see no reason why anyone would want to go any higher on the performance scale than these speakers. They offer great features and sound in an affordable package. One thing that is particularly nice about this set is that they can also be used with your TV or home entertainment system. Although I don't know how many of you would be willing to set up the speakers in a different room every time you wanted to watch a DVD on the TV with 5.1 sound.

After spending a good amount of time using these speakers as my primary sound system I have to say that I was nothing but pleased with it's performance. While it did have a few shortcomings, particularly with it's inability to produce clear sound at the upper limits of it's volume settings. As I mentioned before, this isn't that big of detraction as long as you don't plan on using the speakers for parties. What I did like was the speakers ability to play clear and crisp sound. At optimal volume levels they really do sound as good if not better than the THX certified Klipsch Pro-Media speakers.

[...] The only other consideration that you would have to take into account with these speakers is the actual price. While they aren't that expensive compared to other 5.1 solutions they certainly don't come cheap, even the LC version will cost you more than $150 US. But of course if you are willing to pay nearly $100 for a sound card that supports the LC version you will certainly be willing to pay just a bit more for speakers that pair with it perfectly.

Dvdzone heeft een review geschreven over de Revoy MD20. Deze 'Car DVD speler' is zeer klein en kan alleen op een 12 Volt spanningsbron kan worden aangesloten, zoals die van een auto of boot. Samen met een klein TFT scherm is het apparaat dus ideaal om tijdens het reizen of een regenachtige middag op de camping een film te kijken. Naast DVD's ook kan men ook (S)VCD, audio en MP3 cd's afspelen op de regiovrije speler:

Ondanks het feit dat de MD20 alleen een composit video uitgang heeft is de speler toch in staat een zeer net beeld neer te zetten. Het contrast van de speler is prima, en ook de kleurverzadiging laat niets te wensen over. MPEG problemen zijn bij de MD20 niet aan de orde.

Het geluid via de analoge uitgang klinkt gewoon goed en is via de afstandbediening in volume te regelen. De digitale SPDIF uitgang kan PCM, Dolby Digital en DTS geluid doorgeven en alle drie die functies werken prima.

Mocht je vrienden in Amerika hebben die heel graag dit beestje van Microsoft zo snel mogelijk nadat hij uit is willen hebben, stuur ze dan hier heen.

Een onderzoek van ITC International heeft uitgewezen dat ouders van kinderen tussen de 5 en 14 jaar niet bang zijn hun kind(eren) te verwaarlozen door blootstelling aan het internet. Bijna iedereen vindt dat hun kroost op goede wijze omgaat met het omstreden medium. De meeste kinderen zitten volgens het onderzoek zo'n 1 à 2 uur per week op internet. Dan denk ik dat die ouders niet kunnen tellen of dat het onderzoek onder een groep ouders van behoorlijk ouderwetse kinderen is gehouden :

De meeste ouders van kinderen tussen de 5 en 14 jaar die regelmatig gebruik maken van internet, zijn van mening dat internet meer kansen dan bedreigingen biedt. Ruim twee op de drie ouders heeft vertrouwen in de manier waarop hun kind zelfstandig met dit medium omgaat. De helft van de ondervraagde ouders geeft daarbij wel aan graag een
oogje in het zeil te willen houden.

Zo'n 45 procent van de Nederlandse ouders is van mening dat Internet
een positief effect heeft op de algemene kennis van hun kind. Op de vraag of ouders bang zijn dat hun kinderen te veel bezig zijn met Internet, zegt 72 procent dat dit niet het geval is. Van de ouders waarvan de kinderen thuis beschikking hebben over een aansluiting op Internet zegt 59 procent dat hun kind 1 à 2 uur per week gebruik maakt van het medium. Toen The Register wat aan het spelen was met hun nieuwe Pentium 4 systeem kwamen ze tot een vreemde ontdekking: zodra er meer dan 512MB geheugen in de machine werd geplaatst wilden programma's niet meer opstarten door een zogenaamd geheugentekort. Eerst werd de i850 chipset verdacht, maar al snel werden de ogen op het meegeleverde Windows Me gericht. De grote hoeveelheid RAM zorgt ervoor dat het operating systeem geen adress space overheeft voor het virtueel geheugen. Ook het gebruik van een AGP aperture vergroot de kans op problemen. Hier een paar stukjes uit Microsofts knowledge base:

The Windows 32-bit protected-mode cache driver (Vcache) determines the maximum cache size based on the amount of RAM that is present when Windows starts. Vcache then reserves enough memory addresses to permit it to access a cache of the maximum size so that it can increase the cache to that size if needed. These addresses are allocated in a range of virtual addresses from 0xC0000000 through 0xFFFFFFFF (3 to 4 gigabytes) known as the system arena.

On computers with large amounts of RAM, the maximum cache size can be large enough that Vcache consumes all of the addresses in the system arena, leaving no virtual memory addresses available for other functions such as opening an MS-DOS prompt (creating a new virtual machine).

This problem may occur more readily with Advanced Graphics Port (AGP) video adapters because the AGP aperture is also mapped to addresses in the system arena. For example, if Vcache is using a maximum cache size of 800MB and an AGP video adapter has a 128MB aperture mapped, there is very little address space remaining for the other system code and data that must occupy this range of virtual addresses.

Microsoft geeft drie tips om het probleem te omzeilen, de eerste daarvan is om het extra geheugen simpelweg te verwijderen en de andere twee zijn softwareinstellingen die in wezen hetzelfde doen. Windows 95 en 98 hebben hetzelfde probleem, Windows NT en 2000 hebben er echter geen last van.

Tech Extreme heeft een review geschreven over de NEC FE700 Flat-faced Monitor. Dit kijkkastje kan slechts een resolutie aan van 1280*1024. Geen high-end model dus. De geometrie en scherpte van de monitor zijn echter zeer goed te noemen. Ook is er geen sprake van vervorming, hoewel de convergentie aan de randen wat te wensen over laat:

After running a series of tests, including MadOnion’s 3dmark, we can see the capabilities of this particular monitor. It is difficult to give this test a measurement, but a visual scan of the monitor during 3dmark’s geometric trials will give you a good idea of the monitor’s abilities. The FE700 preformed exceptionally. No inconsistencies were detected at all.

From 16bit to 32bit, most monitors are basically the same in their ability to handle colors. It really depends on the video card, but the monitor must be able to handle itself as well. What’s important is actually something called “misconvergence.” It essentially means that there is a misalignment between the red, green and blue electron beams. Typically, this occurs towards the edge of the screen. I found almost no misonvergence with the FE 700 – probably due to its Flat-Face feature.

Conclusion:
I’m almost neutral when it comes to a reccomendation on this particular monitor. Its primary disadvantages are its price tag, which hovers around 280 dollars, and its limited resolution abilities (although still a industry standard, as gamers we must look to set that standard higher). Its basic advantage is its Flat-Panel and grill pitch, which leads to stunning sharpness during gameplay. Overall, I would give a hesitant thumbs up. It isn’t something you should rush out to buy, but it will certainly serve your needs. If I were you, I would take the FE700 into serious consideration, but only after weighing your options with regard to 19” and larger monitors.

Een onderzoek van het ministerie van Economische Zaken heeft uitgewezen dat technologiestimulering een goede uitwerking heeft. Zo verdient elke investering in de verbeteringen van de technologie-sector zich in de loop van de tijd tienvoudig terug. Te verwachten is dat deze onderzoeksresultaten zeer positief zullen zijn voor de betreffende bedrijven, aangezien de regering nu vast niet zal bezuinigen op uitgaven hieraan:

Elke gulden technologiestimulering van Economische Zaken levert op de lange termijn tien gulden extra op, stelt EZ. Dit blijkt uit een onderzoek van het ministerie van Economische Zaken dat door minister Jorritsma aan de Tweede Kamer is aangeboden. Het rapport is getiteld 'MEET. Bedrijfsgerichte technologiestimulering: wat levert het op?'.

Het beeld dat uit de cijfers over het gebruik van de beleidsgelden naar voren komt is dat vooral MKB-bedrijven gebruikmaken van de EZ-technologiegelden. De gelden van EZ komen daarmee terecht waar de 'duw in de rug' het grootste effect heeft, zo stelt het ministerie. De investeringen vertalen zich in een stijging van de arbeidsproductiviteit, een punt waarop Nederland het volgens EZ niet goed doet. Verder blijkt volgens het rapport dat investeringen in R&D zich op termijn terug verdienen door hogere belastingopbrengsten.

USB 2.0 specification is ready and USB 2.0 devices will probably appear on the market by Christmas. The first samples of VIA VT8235 South bridge with USB 2.0 support will be available only in Q2’2001 and the situation is the same with chipsets from other companies. Why do we have such a long time gap?

Some time must pass until the mature USB 2.0 devices are developed. Next Christmas will be the time for USB 2.0.

Will S3 Graphics develop stand-alone graphics chips?

Yes, VIA-S3 Joint Venture will develop both stand-alone and integrated graphics chips.

Apollo Pro266 and KT266 will be launched at the same time but there will be almost one-quarter time gap between PM266 and KM266 release. Are there any problems with integrating S3 graphics core into the chipset with EV6 support? Or maybe chipsets for Intel CPUs are the first priority for VIA?

There are no technical difficulties in delivering this solution. Apart from the reason which I mentioned answering the previous question, there is also another one. Taking into account that we are unable to design both chipsets at once, VIA decided to release the chipset supporting our own processor – VIA Cyrix III – first.

When can we expect the transition to the faster DDR SDRAM? What speed will PC2600 and PC3200 have?

Hopefully DDR II will be announced at the beginning of 2002. So we will see the first DDR II systems during the second half of 2002. The year 2003 will be the year of DDR II. The specification for this standard has not been finalized yet. JEDEC, memory vendors and the whole industry are still reviewing the specification. It is too early to talk about details.

Op de European Patent Convention in München is besloten dat software-ontwikkelaars voorlopig geen patenten kunnen aanvragen op hun producten. De uitslag is een grote overwinning voor de open source gemeenschap. De European Patent Office (EPO) wil wel dat softwarepatenten gelegaliseerd worden. Maandag konden we nog lezen dat EuroLinux een petitie was gestart tegen softwarepatenten.

De tegenstanders zijn gematigd enthousiast over het besluit omdat het patent nog niet volledig van de baan is. "De stemming moet niet zozeer worden opgevat als een besluit tegen softwarepatenten. Het is meer een besluit om nu nog geen beslissing te nemen, om te wachten tot de Europese Commissie haar onderzoek heeft afgerond", zo zei een Belgische vertegenwoordiger van de EuroLinux Alliance tegen Wired.

De opponenten van softwarepatenten zijn overigens niet alleen afkomstig vanuit de Linux-gemeenschap. Ook grote softwarebedrijven als Oracle, Adobe, Borland en Novell en het mediaconcern Bertelsmann zijn tegen het patenteren van software.

Nog grotere softwareconcerns als IBM, Intel en Cisco voeren daarentegen een sterke lobby voor patenten. IBM zou met het verstrekking van licenties jaarlijks zo'n 1,5 miljard dollar verdienen.

edward schrijft dat FiringSquad in haar Comdex verslag wat benchmarks heeft gepost van de 3dfx Voodoo5 6000 videokaart. Alhoewel dit model dus nooit op de markt zal komen is het wel leuk om eens te kijken wat hij kan presteren:

3dfx had a couple AAlchemy system boxes on display. They had two dual P3-800 systems going head to head, one with a 4-chip VSA-100 card, and the other with a GeForce2 Ultra. With 4X FSAA enabled on both systems, the 3dfx system outperformed the NVIDIA box by a very large margin in the Open GVS demo 3dfx showed us. Open GVS may be good and all, but we wanted to see numbers on a benchmark that we were a little more familiar with.

Brandon was able to distract Bubba with a couple questions, and we managed to grab a few Quake 3 numbers off the Voodoo5 6000/P3-800E system. The card will never reach retail shelves, but we were still curious. All tests are in High Quality.

On a side note, we found the new 8X FSAA setting in the video display settings and we enabled it just to see how it looked. We saw an immediate difference in Quake 3. In all honesty, the game looked completely different. Aanbieders van telecomdiensten moeten volgens een onderzoek van The Yankee Group Europe snel beginnen met het aanbieden van hun diensten over het internetprotocol, zo meldt WebWereld. Om de overstap makkelijker te maken zijn meer investeringen in circuitgeschakelde technologie nodig, maar de onderzoeksgroep voorspelt dat die investeringen juist zullen afnemen de komende twee jaar. Ondernemers hebben nog niet genoeg vertrouwenen in de opkomende techniek:

De telecomaanbieders zijn volgens het onderzoek wel overtuigd van de toekomst van IP, toch zullen zij alleen de overstap maken als de kwaliteit van het spraak- en dataverkeer via het internet protocol gegarandeerd is. Daarbij heerst er nog veel onzekerheid over wat de toegevoegde waarde van telecombedrijven zal zijn nadat 'voice-over-IP' gemeengoed is geworden.

Op langere termijn zullen volgens het onderzoek twee soorten bedrijven hun voordeel kunnen doen met de overstap naar telecomverkeer via IP. Enerzijds zijn dat grote telecombedrijven, die wereldwijd of in een grote regio actief zijn. Anderzijds zijn dat bedrijven die een niche van de markt bedienen, die technologieën ontwikkelen voor gespecialiseerde diensten.
