Een aardige score voor een typische zaterdag wijst uit dat het vandaag zondag moet zijn. I never could get the hang of Sundays. Maargoed, een half miljoen blokjes meer dan de eeuwige nummer twee Team Anandtech en een totale voorsprong die inmiddels al boven de 100.000.000 ligt (het staat indrukwekkender als je het uitschrijft ) zorgt dat we rustig aan opstomen naar de 1 miljard totaal . Aangezien stoomschepen toch al een tijdje achterhaald zijn kunnen we wel wat extra versterking in de RC5 gelederen gebruiken zodat we op een hogere versnelling kunnen overschakelen. Ook The Techzone heeft zich deze week gebogen over AMD's Athlon Thunderbird processor met de inmiddels veelbesproken AXIA-core. Na de bevindingen van Firingsquad die je hier ook al kon lezen dus nóg maar eens een keer een Athlon 1GHz met AXIA core en 266MHz FSB op de pijnbank.

Bleef Firingsquad noodgedwongen steken op 1400MHz, The Techzone wist de 1470MHz te bereiken. Op 1540MHz wilde het systeem nog wel posten, maar daarna was het over - maar volgens de reviewer lag dat wellicht ook aan een onvoldoend gekoelde north-bridge of aan een te lage Vcore. Op 1470MHz bleef het systeem in ieder geval stabiel draaien, produceerde onder meer de onderstaande kwijl-benchmark en liet een blije reviewer achter:

The results are quite phenomenal!! Approaching a 50% overclock, not to mention the fact that we're nudging the back door of 1.5Ghz, is a satisfying result, especially from a clean, non tested, picked at random CPU. It's a strong piece of evidence that the AXIA stepping AMD Thunderbird CPU's are something special, and well worth having.

Just how far can current Thunderbird design go? Noone can tell at this point, but it's clear with AMD's lastest stepping, there's some hardcore headroom to be contended with here!

Active hardware heeft het AOpen AX37Plus FC-PGA moederbord eens onder handen genomen. Dit bord is gebouwd rond de VIA Apollo Pro 266 chipset, en maakt daarbij gebruik van DDR-SDRAM geheugen. De specs in 't kort:

Daarnaast de bekende AOpen-gimmicks zoals een zwarte print en een opvallende heatsink op de north-bridge. Opvallend is verder de aanwezigheid van maar liefst zes USB-headers, altijd handig voor de die-hard USB- gebruiker.

Het bord blijkt in de tests goed te presteren, en laat zich bovendien ook behoorlijk overclocken. De FSB is via het BIOS in te stellen van 66 tot 248MHz in stapjes van 1MHz, dus méér dan voldoende mogelijkheden. Ook de Vcore heeft zeer veel instelmogelijkheden: van 1,35 tot maar liefst 3,5V in stapjes van 0,05V. De benchmarks kunnen volgens de reviewer overtuigen, en ook de stabiliteit wordt geroemd. En dat levert en zeer positieve slotconclusie voor de AX37 Plus op:

The AOpen AX37 Plus is the highest performing board based on the VIA Pro266 chipset that we've yet tested. It is very well conceived, and carried itself well throughout our analysis.

By including a number of interesting features - such as the ability to adjust the FSB in 1MHz steps, to adjust the Vcore, a RAID controller, and DDR-SDRAM support - the AX37 Plus constitutes a true performance champ, and an obvious choice for Overclockers - especially given how well it responded to tweaking. So, its with great honor that we award the AX37 PLUS with our "Top Grade Hardware Award".

Hoewel Creative heeft besloten om het wat rustiger aan te doen door geen GeForce3 op de markt te zetten komen er geruchten van Digit Life af die beweren dat het bedrijf binnenkort als tweede grote naam met een aantal Kyro producten komt. Eerder al besloot Hercules deze stap te zetten en ook Videologic heeft al een Kyro II kaart uitgebracht. De reviews wezen al uit dat de Kyro II een geduchte concurrent van de GeForce serie kon worden. nVidia is daardoor blijkbaar een beetje angstig geworden en dat blijkt dus niet ongegrond:

Our sources close to Creative informed us that the company is going to be back to graphics market with its KYRO/KYRO II based solutions soon. According to them these solutions are much better than NVIDIA's in terms of the production cost. So, Creative will be the second big and famous vendor (after Hercules) to use KYRO.

RedHerring heeft een interview on-line gezet met John Gildred, opperhoofd van Indrema, een kleine onderneming die graag een game-computer op basis van Linux zou willen bouwen. Of dit ooit nog gaat lukken is de grote vraag: Indrema leidt onder chronisch geldgebrek en investeerders zijn maar moeilijk te vinden, vooral omdat men meer geïnteresseerd is in grootschalige projecten dan in kleine start-ups als Indrema.

Ook de spelletjesmakers nemen een afwachtende houding in, dus ook van die kant is voor Indrema geen kapitaalinjectie te verwachten. Al met al geen positief beeld, en dat terwijl men momenteel de laatste hand legt aan de eerste werkende prototypes van de Indrema-console:

John Gildred would rather fight than quit. Even as his cash-poor startup faces its finish. "We'll know in the next 30 days," says 30-year-old Mr. Gildred. His Alameda, California-based gaming company, Indrema, desperately needs money. But, as he acknowledges, "the institutional venture capital market is looking grim."

Mr. Gildred says his company can make money by giving away its tools to independent developers, then certifying the games that they create for the Indrema console. He thinks developers will pay for the Indrema seal of approval because the certification will ensure that their games will run properly on the system. Mr. Gildred has had conversations with commercial game developers, but all are taking a wait-and-see approach to building games for the new platform.

With limited financial support, Mr. Gildred and his team of 50 open-source community developers, volunteers, and employees are now finishing a working console prototype. That's all he can promise at this point. He estimates that an Indrema system will be available in limited quantity by the end of 2001. Of course, that depends on somebody coming through with more money. And, as Mr. Gildred himself admits, the chances of that are slim.

Supermicro introduceert haar nieuwste aanwinst, de Super 370DDE. Dit dual-processor FC-PGA moederbord is gebaseerd op VIA's Apollo Pro 266 chipset, die we normaliter associëren met DDR-SDRAM geheugen. Niets van dit al bij de 370DDE: deze plank gebruikt SDR-SDRAM! Een DDR-variant is weliswaar in aantocht en heet 370DDI, maar is nog niet leverbaar. De 370DDE is in Japan (waar anders) al wèl leverbaar, en kost daar zo'n $225, omgerekend dus een kleine FL 700. Voor de liefhebber hier de specificaties van de 370DDE:

Voorwaar geen verkeerde specificaties voor een werkstation-bordje, als server-bord mist 'ie natuurlijk zaken als geïntegreerde video en NIC's, zoals je die wel ziet bij bijvoorbeeld de Tyan Tiger 200. Nu maar wachten op de eerste reviews.

SysOpt heeft een korte review gebakken van het Elitegroup ECS D6VAA dual-processor Pentium III moederbord. Om maar met de deur in huis te vallen: het meest opvallende aan dit plankje is z'n prijs - minder dan $90, en da's omgerekend slechts zo'n 275 gulden. Daarmee is de D6VAA dus waarschijnlijk wel het goedkoopste dual-processor plankje dat momenteel verkrijgbaar is. Wat krijg je voor je geld?

Daarnaast krijg je een plankje met een redelijke lay-out, volgens de reviewers is alleen de voedingsconnector een beetje lastig gepositioneerd als je een kleine kast gebruikt. Ook is er voldoende ruimte rond de processorsockets voor het plaatsen van wat grotere koelers, al zullen de allergrootste koelers niet zonder meer passen. En die koelers kun je ook nodig hebben, want de D6VAA kan overclockt worden, alhoewel het aantal FSB-frequenties niet zo groot is als bijvoorbeeld bij Abit en co, d'r zijn toch zo'n 20 FSB's boven de 100MHz te vinden. De D6VAA was met twee Intel Pentium III 800E CPU's stabiel te krijgen op 1000MHz bij een core-spanning van 1,8V en Intel's standaard-koelers. Daarnaast blijkt de D6VAA ook een stabiel moederbord te zijn, en dat levert dan ook vrijwel uitsluitend lovende woorden op:

System stability proved nearly flawless. During an exhaustive twelve-hour burn session with both SiSoft Sandra 2001 and 3DMark2000, the test system did not suffer a single hardware crash or stall while at default clock speeds. ECS has engineered an impressive motherboard with the D6VAA, as both quality and reliability are two aspects rarely offered in an entry-level solution. Bij Void your Warranty hebben ze een tijdje geleden een leuke contest uitgeschreven waarin werd gevraagt wie de meest extreme koeling op z'n videokaart heeft zitten. Hoe gekker hoe beter en de voorkeur ging uit naar oplossingen die onmogelijk nog garantie kunnen krijgen. Een voorbeeld van een leuke inzending:

Beveiligingsbedrijf GateKeeper heeft aangekondigd 10.000 dollar te betalen aan degene die een virus met bijbehorende uitleg aflevert dat door hun beveiliging heen gaat. Het betreft een programma dat onbekende attachments bij bedrijven rechtstreeks verwijdert, en alleen de body doorlaat. Op zich geen slechte opzet, gezien de grote hoeveelheid vbs-scripts die recentelijk via e-mail attachments grote schade aanrichtten:

The antivirus industry lambasted e-mail firewall start-up GateKeeper on Monday, after the company announced a reward for any virus writer who can infect a specific computer protected by its product.

The challenge, announced Monday, will pay $100 to the first person to get a virus past the company's e-mail gateway and infect a computer on the internal network. The company will also pay $9,900 to the person for information about how they created the virus.[break]

Op zich is dit natuurlijk een goede mogelijkheid om het veiligheidsniveau van de software te testen. Het is alleen de vraag of hackers de 10.000 dollar niet een te laag bedrag vinden, zoals bij de SDMI muziek-kraakcontest gebeurde. Behalve dat vinden professionals op virus-gebied dat GateKeeper een uiterst onverantwoorde zet heeft gedaan. Woordvoerders zijn van mening dat een dergelijke wedstrijd hackers aanzet tot het schrijven van virussen, met de kans dat deze ook op andere computers dan de GateKeeper test-PC's schade zullen aanrichten:[/break]While such challenges have been popular as a way to gather hackers from around the world to crack encryption or test a security product, applying them to the virus-writing scene is irresponsible, said Susan Orbuch, spokeswoman for antivirus software company Trend Micro.

Unlike attempts to hack a server, a virus can spread out of control beyond a single computer to the Internet at large, Orbuch said.
