Bij FullOn3D staat een press release van Mushkin waarin zij aankondigen dat revisie 3 van hun HSDRAM vanaf nu te koop is. Het High Perfomance SDRAM van Mushkin staat bekend als ideaal voor overclockers. De nieuwe 128MB DIMM wordt gegarandeerd op 150MHz bij latencies van 2-2-2. De vorige revisie werd 'slechts' tot 133MHz getest en het eerder uitgebrachte PC150 HSDRAM werkte met latencies van 2-3-2. De mooie zwarte reepjes bestaan uit 6 lagen en bevatten met de hand gekozen chips van Infineon:

"While DDR is still in its infancy and wrestles with stability issues, we at Mushkin know that there are users out there who still want to push SDRAM performance to the edge, hence the need for the Rev3. We expect these to be modules of choice for the high performance community"

Mushkin has tested the Rev3 on all of the latest chipsets including the BX, AMD 750, VIA KX133, VIA KT133, VIA Apollo Pro 133A and i815e chipsets. The Rev3 is of special interest to users of the i815e because of it's high-density configuration. The limitation imposed on overclockers by the i815e's inability to run more than 4 banks or sides of SDRAM will be softened by the Rev3's high-density single-sided configuration.

Wat dit lekkers precies gaat kosten is niet bekend, maar je kunt op een prijs van meer dan 500 gulden rekenen.

SysOpt.com heeft alle nieuwste gegevens over Intel's roadmaps die her en der over het internet verspreid staan bijelkaar gesprokkeld en er een mooi artikel over geschreven. Op desktopgebied zien we wel dat de Northwood (de volgende generatie Pentium 4) helemaal naar het einde van volgend jaar is gegeschoven. De Tualatin 1,26GHz komt pas uit tegen de tijd dat de Pentium 4 op 2GHz zit in het derde kwartaal. Verder kunnen we volgend jaar eindelijk de Celeron met 100MHz FSB verwachten, te beginnen met 800MHz in het begin van het eerste kwartaal.

Er is nog veel meer info te vinden over chipsets, mobiele processors en het servergebied. Zo lezen we dat Intel's SDRAM Pentium 4 chipset Brookdale pas begin 2002 ondersteuning voor DDR geheugen zal krijgen. Ook zien we dat de servermarkt nauwelijks bij te houden is: Pentium 3 wordt vervangen door Pentium 4 en die op zijn beurt weer door Northwood. Tegelijkertijd wordt de Itanium alweer opgevolgd door McKinley, de 0.13 micron IA-64 processor die op 1,5GHz zou moeten starten en gebruikt maakt van de i870 chipset:

On a positive note, two new higher performance chipsets are scheduled for release next year. The highly anticipated i850 is Intel's new Pentium 4 400MHz processor bus chipset. The CPU-to-chipset throughput rates should be spectacular with this chipset. I hope that memory throughput will be equally impressive, as this chipset utilizes the same dual-channel Rambus controller found in the current higher-performance i840 workstation/server chipset. The other chipset, codenamed Brookdale, is intended for mass production in Q4 '01. Brookdale will be targeted as a middle market Pentium 4 solution with standard PC133 SDRAM memory support. Future projections indicate the Brookdale chipset could also undergo a revision in early 2002 for PC266 DDR-DRAM memory support.

[...] The 32-bit workstation processor path nearly parallels the desktop projections for Intel's 2001 roadmap. The chipset arena will be a diverging factor, as offerings include the Pentium III/Xeon i840 and Pentium 4 i860. Upon the Northwood release, the SMP capable Prestonia i860 and Placer chipsets should be available for those needing the performance offered by eight-way multiprocessing.

We kregen gisteren er weer 13 mensen bij, zodat ons totaal inmiddels al weer op 3782 staat!

Helaas kon dat niet voorkomen dat we 'maar' 440.000 blocks voorsprong hebben op AT

De mannen van x-bit labs hebben een review geschreven over de GeForce2 MX kaart van Creative. Deze kaart is niet zoals de meeste MX kaarten uitgerust met 166MHz SDR SDRAM, maar met 143MHz DDR SDRAM. Jammer genoeg is het geheugenbus naar het DDR geheugen slechts 64-bit breed in plaats van de gebruikelijke 128-bit. Met een simpel rekensommetje kunnen we nu uitrekenen dat een normale GeForce2 MX een bandbreedte van 2656MB/sec heeft en de Creative GeForce2 MX slechts een bandbreedte van 2288MB/sec heeft.

Dit valt ook te zien in de benchmarks waar de Creative kaart steevast langzamer is dan een normale MX kaart. Dat Creative van plan was om een erg goedkope GeForce2 MX kaart te maken kunnen we ook aan de kaart zelf zien: op de chip is zelfs geen heatsink te vinden en het stukje PCB is ook niet wat je noemt groot. Voorlopig vallen deze bezuinigingen nog niet te zien in de retail prijs van de kaart, maar de reviewer verwacht dat dit in de toekomst, als de kaart wat langer op de markt is, nog wel zal gebeuren :

Creative engineers planned to develop the cheapest graphics card based on GeForce2 MX chipset, but for a retail buyer it has turned out to be the most freaky card with a moderate price. Among its positive features we can name Creative's traditionally high 2D graphics quality. However, a considerable lag in 3D applications behind regular cards based on GeForce2 MX may be excused only if the market newcomer's currently too high price gets down to reasonable limits. And as the public interest to this new unusual card will cool down, its price is likely to turn even lower than that for similar cards equipped with SDR memory.

But to our mind, Creative developed this graphics card not for the mass retail sales but for large OEMs. These are usually long-term contracts, so constructive and marketing decisions should ensure the maximum reliability and a long-lasting attractiveness of the graphics cards.

This version is corroborated by the low-profile design of the card and the absence of a cooler and heatsink (brand name OEMs tend to equip their PCs with no supplementary active cooling and restrict themselves to only nominal cooling). Furthermore, graphics cards in PCs like that are much more rarely overclocked. Thus, the card may be made as cheap as possible because price is the main determinant for OEM partners.

Jim Warren van AnandTech komt ons vandaag verblijden met een review over de DTT3500 speakerset van Cambridge SoundWorks / Creative. Deze speakerset bestaat uit 4 satelliet speakertjes van 7Watt, één center speaker van 21Watt en een subwoofer van 30Watt. Verder zit er nog een Dolby Digital decoder bij om te zorgen dat je alle boxen optimaal kan gebruiken. Jammer genoeg komt de reviewer tot de conclusie dat de kwaliteit van de set slechts matig te noemen is. Het lijkt erop dat Creative flink heeft bezuinigd op de ingebouwde versterker wat als gevolg een altijd hoorbare ruis op alle speakers heeft. Desalniettemin is het geen slechte set, maar voor de 300 dollar die de set kost zijn betere dingen te krijgen:

Cambridge SoundWorks has put a lot of time into designing the DTT 3500. From detailed assembly notes in the users manual to including wire labels, it is evident that a lot of thought has been spent on presentation. However, in choosing some of the components in the amplifier, they seem to have made some serious compromises.

After having the system assembled for a couple of weeks, it is difficult to say that it is of the highest quality. Quite frankly, there is too much noise in the system; when not listening to any music while computing, it is loud enough to have to turn off the amplifier in order to not be distracted and keep working. The nature of noise is not to go away once music starts playing, either. This degrades the tonal quality of the system and detracts from the overall listening experience.

For those people that can stand the noise level that comes with these speakers, it would be best suited to a gaming environment. It has a powerful subwoofer that maintains its frequency response down into the low spectrum. For explosions and impacts, it will not disappoint. Being able to take advantage of the four channel surround support that many games offer, while still having Dolby Digital capability for when it's time to kick back with a DVD, are characteristic of the flexibility of the system.

For those who primarily listen to music and DVDs, the overall tonal balance of the system is fairly good, though it does dip in the lower midrange frequencies. The noise issues will also affect the listening experience. Action movies, like games, would shake, but vocals and music will be competing with the noise in the satellites. It is not the best-suited system for these listening environments, especially at its three hundred dollar price tag.

Bij Digit-Life hebben ze eens kort gekeken naar de Asus CUSL2-C i815EP plank. Dit moederbordje is gebaseerd op de i815EP chipset en is dus niet onnodig uitgerust met onboard VGA. Daarnaast is het AGP Pro slot vervangen door een standaard exemplaar en is er een CNR slot afgetrapt. Onboard audio is ook verdwenen en er is wat gekort op USB aansluitingen. Dit alles heeft wel een positief effect op de prijs, die schijnbaar zo'n 25 dollar lager is dan bij de CUSL2. Zijn performance en stabiliteit zijn uiteraard wel gebleven:

They took out the second CNR, a thin slot of half-width which shared the space with a thin sixth PCI, the pins of which are more sensitive to the mechanical force; you shouldn't take in/out the cards out of this slot. VGA connector of integrated video disappeared as well, but the layout didn't allow the second COM-port to be put on its regular place - it 's left on the front edge of the board. USB hub was been taken out as well - 4 ports are more than enough.

Another problem concerns the board's complete set. So, what does it lack of? We don't have practically free sound in AC'97 codec, 3 audio connectors - Line-In, Line-Out and Microphone, and a connector for a joy-stick. They seems to consider that a customer of CUSL2 or CUSL2-C doesn't need a cheap sound, in any case it would buy something like Live! or Vortex2.

Interestingly that CUSL2-C doesn't work together with PPGA Celeron which can be found on the market from 366 to 500 MHz.


[...] So, the flagship model of ASUS on the chipset from Intel got rid of integrated video and some other unnecessary things, lost 20-25 USD, and now it's ready to fight against competitors in order to win users' hearts. So, meet ASUS CUSL2-C!

X-Bit meldt dat SUMA in de nabije toekomst GeForce2 MX kaarten zal releasen die zijn voorzien van een extra output-filter die de 2D beeldkwaliteit omhoog moet krikken. Deze 'Suma Individual Analog Filter' zal via een extra 'daughtercard' zijn werk doen, waar eventueel ook een TV-Out op geplaatst kan worden.

In the nearest future SUMA will start manufacturing Platinum GeForce2 MX SIF graphics cards equipped with «Suma Individual analog Filter». That is an additional analog filter improving the quality of the signal that comes to the card’s analog outputs (D-Sub and TV-Out). And not to redesign the graphics cards, SUMA has introduced an unusual decision to situate SIF filter on a daughtercard, like TV-Out add-on cards. SUMA will make two types of SIF filters:

• with a single D-Sub Out
• with a two D-Subs and a TV-Out supporting TwinView

Other features of Platinum GeForce2 MX SIF are GeForce2 MX core chip working at a nominal frequency of 175MHz and the 5.5ns memory (183MHz) is a bit faster than that of ordinary graphics cards based on GeForce2 MX.

Op zich is dit een erg goede ontwikkeling: GeForce's zijn erg rap in 3D maar op het gebied van 2D verliezen ze het echt van de concurrenten. In deze posting kon je al lezen hoe doe-het-zelvers hier een oplossing voor zochten. Hopelijk is dat dadelijk dus niet meer nodig.

Gamers Depot heeft een review klaar van de Maxtor DiamondMax. Deze 5400rpm ATA-100 harddisk is zeker niet de snelste, maar geeft je wel een dikke 81 gieg aan opslagcapaciteit. Daarnaast is de prijs (in de USA tenminste) met ongeveer $250 zeer scherp te noemen. Een goede keus voor 'backups' concludeert de reviewer:

Maxtor has sent us a drive that shines in one area: massive capacity. It’s not bad for overall use, but it doesn’t have the performance of other drives we’ve tested. Not that we were expecting it to, but we do like that it wasn’t as slow as it could have been.

One strategy for using the DiamondMax 80 would be as a secondary drive in your system. Set it up as the default save location for your browser or FTP software, and just use it as big download volume. This would make sure that your main drive would remain free of clutter, and when you needed to clear it out, you could just reformat it. It’s a perfect place for all the stuff that you see on the web that you just have to download NOW, but then forget about later.

The big thing that it should be used for at Gamers Depot is to manage our massive MP3 collection. All told, we probably have 40-60GB of MP3’s between us, and they’re all ripped at 160k (we like quality). This is a perfect use for the DiamondMax 80, as MP3 playback doesn’t require the fastest drive out there.
