IBM breidt zijn ondersteuning voor het Linux platform verder uit met de bekendmaking dat Monterey source en binary compatible wordt gemaakt met 64-bit Linux. Monterey is een gezamenlijk door IBM en SCO ontwikkelde Unix variant voor IA-64 processors en combineert de IA-64 versies van AIX en SCO UnixWare:

IBM will Monterey, seine Unix-Variante für Intels kommenden IA64-Prozessor (Itanium), kompatibel zu 64-Bit-Linux machen. Laut Miles Barel, Direktor für AIX und Monterey, strebt IBM dabei sowohl Quelltext- als auch Binärkompatibilität an: Anwendungen, die auf einem der beiden Betriebssysteme laufen, sollen sich ohne Neukompilieren auch auf dem anderen starten lassen. Laut Barel ist die Portabilität von Anwendungen ein Kernziel bei der Monterey-Entwicklung.

Auf die Positionierung von Linux gegenüber Monterey angesprochen, erklärte Barel, dass Linux genau so skalierbar sein könne wie Monterey; dem PC-Unix würden aber noch mindestens fünf Jahre fehlen, bis es hinsichtlich Skalierbarkeit und Systemmangement mit AIX, IBMs aktuellem Unix-Derivat, mithalten könne.

Ook heeft The Register in dit artikel een stukje over RBB (Rapib BIOS Boot) geschreven, deze optie die Booten en Spinning-time van cd-spelers sterk verlaagd ":

The new VC820 BIOS also includes Intel Rapid BIOS Boot (RBB) which streamlines Power On Self Test (POST) running tasks in parallel, eliminating redundant code and reducing legacy features in a bid to meet the PC2001 Design Guide which specifies a seven second POST and HD spin up.

RBB is optimized for Windows ME and Intel claims it reduces the combined BIOS and OS boot time from 35 to 20 seconds. Windows 98 boot comes down from just over a minute to 45 seconds.

Intel doesn't quote the CPU used to achieve these times, but on our Win2K box (Pentium III 933, 256Mb PC700 RDRAM), total boot time from cold, including loading all the network gubbins, came down from 78 to 65 seconds, of which 12 seconds was accounted for in synching up the monitor.

Hard drive spin up times and monitor sync-up rates can add an extra 30 seconds to boot time - a 10,000 rpm drive may take as much as 25 seconds to spin up compared with a 5,400 rpm drive which can be ready for use in as little as 5 seconds.

De gasten van Tresh's FiringSquad hadden zin in een lolletje en hebben toen een 1GHz Pentium III en 1GHz AMD Athlon (Thunderbird) tegenover elkaar gezet. However, today's AGP interfaces will soon have difficulty meeting the high levels of performance that will be required by upcoming applications. These applications include games, 3D graphics animation, mechanical design automation, digital content creation, and video editing.

One issue for handling these applications is increased bandwidth for data traffic. Another, more complex issue is the potential need for isochronous mode operations. To address these issues, initiatives are already in process for a more advanced form of AGP. Bij The Techzone hebben ze een vergelijkende review gemaakt van twee FC-PGA-koelers: de Thermal Take Golden Orb en de nieuwe GlobalWin FOP32, opvolger van de FKP32. Na het testen bleek dat ze beiden even goed koelen tijdens zware CPU load, maar dat de FOP32 bij weinig belasting de CPU toch iets koeler weer te houden. Daarom wint de GlobalWin het nipt van de Thermal Take. De voor de vergelijking meegenomen Intel retail koeler kan het natuurlijk allemaal niet bijbenen:

As expected, the Intel stock heatsink performed terribly... Although, I'm sure the Arctic Silver took some of the edge of. But, it looks like we have a very close call between the two major players here! I was very impressed with both heatsinks even considering the little quirks each has. Again, the numbers don't lie... The FOP32 beat out the Golden Orb by a very narrow margin at idle but it was dead even under torture. If you replace the stock fan on the FOP32 with a Delta 38CFM fan it may even do a bit better.

Both heatsinks have features that would make one more suitable over the other in certain applications. For example, the Golden Orb would be better in situations where you need to use a slotket because the clearance is better between the heatsink and DIMM 1 in this instance. The FOP32 gives you the liberty of changing the fan if you'd like. Regardless, any doubt I may have had about either of these heatsinks is definitely dispelled now.

Na maanden wachten is Internet Explorer 5.5 nu eindelijk de beta-fase voorbij. Via een link in dit artikel van BetaNews is de nieuwe versie van de meest gebruikte browser te downloaden. Aangezien Microsoft het bestandje al wel heeft geupload, maar nog niet officieel aangekondigd, is er nog geen verbeteringen-lijstje beschikbaar. In ieder geval zal IE 5.5 net als de betaversie een print-preview hebben, maar verder is er nog weinig bekend. Waarschijnlijk zal binnenkort ook een Nederlandse versie beschikbaar zijn:

Deeztech heeft een review gemaakt van de (even diep adem halen) THEON Cyclone 5000 Ultra Custom Mid ATX Case, een typische 'ik heb lekker meer fans in mijn kast dan jij' kast. De 5 fans die er in zitten houden de kast lekker koud, de temperatuur binnen de kast was bij de reviewer even laag als de kamertemperatuur. De geluidsproductie is wel iets minder maar geen reden voor de reviewer om deze kast niet te bestempelen als erg goed :

Looking at the specs, it certaintly seems like a worth contender. There are two 92mm intake fans on the side panel, three 80mm fans, on intake in the front, and two outake in the back and on top. At 229 CFM, this case moves some SERIOUS air. I don't believe there's any other desktop PC case in this price range that even comes close to those numbers. The standard 300 Watt power supply is very nice bonus. No upgrades here folks. As far as expansion is concerned there seems to be plenty of expansion in both 5 1/4" and 3 1/2" bays. Opening the case requires the use of a screwdriver to remove two screws so we can slide out the side panel. One word of caution here folks, ensure you remove the panel slowly and disconnect the fan wires that are attached on the side panel for the two intake 92mm fans.

The capabilities of this case would be even more pronounced with people who are using thermoelectric devices such as peltiers to cool their CPUs. This case should have absolutely no problem removing the extra heat generated by the peltiers. The case certainly generates its own share of noise, but that's to be expected when you consider the amount of air this baby pushes. The longer you leave it on, the more it blends with the background noise in the room, and you don't notice it as much. But, if this type of thing really bothers you, then you probably shouldn't even consider buying a toy like this. The good people over at CoolerGuys have a winner in their hands with the Cyclone 5000. Performance and price wise, this product is superior to anything else out in the market right now. We give this product our stamp of approval.

Een nieuwe draagbare computer van IBM zal je ook echt kunnen gaan dragen. Niet zoals we dat gewend zijn onder de arm, maar als een soort rugzak. In de nog geen kilo wegende rugzak zit de hardware, verbonden met één of ander ding op je hoofd. Het beeld zal door middel van een soort monocle op je oog worden geprojecteerd en de bediening zal gebeuren met spraakherkenning of een aangepaste muis. Ik denk wel dat je in het begin erg de aandacht zal trekken als je buiten loopt met zo'n ding op je hoofd . Volgens het artikel van CNN zal de computer begin volgend jaar op de markt komen:

IBM's wearable PC could be ready for the market as early as the beginning of next year, although the company needs to work further at refining and testing the design, an IBM engineer said here Wednesday.

Most of the people who tried on the wearable PC at the show Wednesday seemed enthusiastic about it. The device has a high gee-whiz factor, something IBM highlights in company commercials featuring a young man sitting alone in a park full of pigeons, screaming stock orders into the wearable PC's headset.

The system links a head display harness to a wide, black shoulder sash with the computer processing hardware. The display device is a toothbrush-sized bar extending from the headgear like a monocle on one side of the wearer's face. It projects the image of a computer screen in front of the user's eye. The wearer can control the computer using voice commands or a mouse built like a pilot's hand-grip with the buttons mounted like triggers.

IBM's wearable computer uses standard computer processing chips and can run Microsoft's Windows 98 operating system. The shoulder sash with the computer's processor and memory weighs about a pound or two.

Anand Lal Shimpi heeft een informatieve lap tekst online gezet over het overclocken van de GeForce2 MX. De bottleneck ligt netzo als bij de GeForce2 bij het geheugen. Het overclocken van de core van 175 MHz naar 225 MHz leverde slechts een snelheidswinst van enkele procenten op, daarentegen leverde het overclocken van het geheugen van 166 MHz naar 210 MHz een snelheidswinst van 27% op. Volgens Anand mag deze videokaart zichzelf met recht een budget kaart noemen: relatief snel, tweakable! en goedkoop :

We already knew that the GeForce2 MX was a value at $119, but if you can manage to overclock the memory to around 200MHz it becomes a much more powerful solution and definitely something you'll want in your system.

We've spent the past few months drooling over new motherboards that set us back at least $150, 1GHz Pentium IIIs and Athlons that we all wanted but couldn't really justify spending $1,000 on as well as $300 video cards that made the frames fly but the credit cards heavy with debt.

Recently that has been changing, the "value" market as most AnandTech readers see it has been becoming even more attractive. At first with the 566MHz Celerons that would overclock to 850MHz and beyond and now with the Duron that offers an Athlon level of performance at a little over $100. nigelator schrijft: "In de manual van dit nieuwe bordje van Asus staat een serie dipswitches niet aangeven, die wel op het moederboard staat. Volgens de schrijver van het artikel (en volgens mij ook) hebben ze bij Asus zelfs een plaatje geretoucheerd om deze dipjes eraf te halen in de manual.":

"I'm not too sure it's gonna be such a good buy anymore... if you look at the picture of the mobo at Tom's Hardware, and then at the picture of the mobo in the manual, there's a set of dip switches missing on the one in the manual. On the one that Tom has there's a set of 4 and a set of 6 dip switches side-by-side. That set of 6 is missing - and my guess is that this is the set for controlling the multiplier lock. And the manual explicitly states that "AMD Processors have locked frequency multiples." So maybe Asus have pulled the ability to unlock the multiplier to ensure they don't piss AMD off.

Aangezien de multiplier selectie met 4 pinnetjes werkt, en de voltage selectie met 5, lijkt het mij waarschijnlijker dat ze de voltage selectie eraf gesloopt hebben (om in het BIOS te kunnen), en dat de set van 4 alsnog de multiplier regelt. Mochten ze inderdaad de mogelijkheid tot het veranderen van de multiplier eraf gehaald hebben, dan zal er waarschijnlijk binnenkort wel een bord van een andere fabrikant langskomen met die feature, en als dat ook niet gebeurt, kunnen we altijd nog zelf gaan solderen of dat laten doen. De modificatie is nauwelijks moeilijker dan een Playstation mod chip aanbrengen, en dat kan tegenwoordig op iedere straathoek. Lees hier het volledige artikel.

Bijna precies drie maanden na de oorspronkelijke introductie is het Intel gelukt: er zijn 1GHz Coppermines op de markt.

Bij Akiba's PC Watch, regelmatig al op Tweakers in het nieuws geweest als "die vage japanse site", heeft het weer voor elkaar: de eerste foto's van los verkochte Giga-PIII's.

De Thunderbirds uit Dresden worden met een geavanceerd produktieproces met koperen interconnects gemaakt, en zouden (wellicht) iets beter te overklokken zijn. Of dat ook zo is weet alleen AMD nog op dit moment.
