Deskundigen zijn het er niet over eens of de opsplitsing van Microsoft nou positief of negatief zal zijn voor de concurrenten van het bedrijf. Volgens International Data Corp. zal de opdeling negatief zijn voor Linux-fabrikanten als Red Hat en Corel, aangezien Microsoft waarschijnlijk haar eigen Linux-distributie zal gaan maken. Hierdoor zullen de concurrenten zelfs nog moeilijker voet aan de grond krijgen als nu:

The federal court ruling to divide Microsoft into two companies and limit its business could hurt, rather than help, competitors that make Linux-based computer programs, a computer industry research firm said. "What would stop them from coming up with Microsoft Linux?" said Dan Kusnetzky, an analyst at IDC. "They'd have command of every major channel and partner. That would make it very difficult for Red Hat to get any attention in the channels." Volgens een nieuwe Amerikaanse wet mogen gebruikers onder de 13 geen gebruik meer maken van ICQ. Ik ben benieuwd of enkele Tweakers onder de 13 (die zijn er toch? ) hier ook bericht over hebben gehad of dat ze bij ICQ zo slim waren geweest ff te kijken naar het ingevulde land.

Savage News heeft wat info gepost over een reeks videokaarten die gepowered moeten worden door 2 of 4 Savage4 chips. Met mooie van deze kaart zal niet op het gebied van de 3D performance liggen, maar op het gebied van de 2D. Aan deze kaarten kunnen namelijk 2 of 4 monitoren gehangen worden, afhankelijk van het aantal chippies:

Both the Pro 2 and Pro 4 have almost exact same specs. The only difference is the extra two savage4's and ports on the Pro 4. As you can see from the pictures (below) those boards are pretty big, at least a heatsink and fan is on there (and they don't need an external power supply). Some things shown in the specs are not operational. Anti-Aliasing will never work until S3 incorporates it into the drivers. Although ColorGraphic actually does some heavy modification in the reference driver's (unlike others who just put a company display app, and put they're name in it) it's probably to include the quad or dual monitor support. Hopefully I will have a review unit soon and I'll tell you how the quad or dual CPU's perform. I just hope it let's you use all the CPU's on one monitor, not just each CPU to each monitor port. [...] Also remember that every Savage4 based card has a 64-bit bus. This is inside the actual processor and cannot be modified by adding something extra. S3 must actually change the silicon. So with this 64-bit bus, even the quad CPU configuration will be handicapped. So if you want to see how the card would perform on a 128-bit bus, just switch the resolution to 800x600. This is not acceptable today unless you have a 15inch monitor or smaller, because a nVidia GeforceGTS can run games at 1024x768 with much higher frame rates. Even the S3 Savage2000 will probably smoke this configuration, and it cost less. If you look into the ColorGraphic website you will soon figure out that ColorGraphic provides drivers with no 3D Features. That's right. No OpenGL or Direct3D acceleration is available (yet), although it is in the specs. This can confuse many people (as it did me in the beginning) into buying the card only to find out that Quake3 can't find an OpenGL driver. There could be a possibility that by using S3's reference driver's you might get the acceleration (with also the possibility to lose all but one CPU). So as soon as I get one of these to benchmark and try out I will type up another article with all the numbers you may need.

Voor wie deze kaart interessant moet zijn is voor mij eigenlijk een raadsel: voor 3D performance moet je deze kaart duidelijk niet hebben, voor dualhead kan je waarschijnlijk goedkoper een Matrox kaart halen en als je perse 4 monitoren wilt aansluiten kan je waarschijnlijk beter en goedkoper 4 PCI kaartjes kopen...

NT Compatible meldt dat Creative Labs op hun newsserver heeft aangekondigd dat de langverwachte Windows 2000 Live!Ware 3 drivers mogelijk eind deze week worden gereleased. De drivers hebben het wrede testprogramma van Microsoft in ieder geval al overleefd:

The drivers have been received from MS. At this point, it looks like they may be posted some time next week (probably towards the end of the week). This is kind of lousy timing since we are going into a 4 day holiday weekend and won't be back until the middle of the week, but the light is at the end of the tunnel.

Netcraft heeft de resultaten van hun webserver survey voor de afgelopen maand gepubliceerd. Apache heeft na een kleine dip in mei de weg naar de top weer opgepakt en heerst nu een marktaandeel van 60,44 procent. De daling die Microsoft eind vorig jaar heeft ingezet, werd ook in juni vervolgd. Samen met iPlanet (Sun / Netscape) en Zeus was Internet Information Server de grootste daler. Het onderzoek van Netscraft leverde weer wat interessante feitjes op. Zo blijkt dat MacOS fansites vooral op Unix varianten draaien en dat Akamai een aantal Win2k servers aan hun kudde met Pinguins heeft toegevoegd:

Apache gained well over a million sites from the May survey, and sailed past the 10 million sites threshold. Part of the strength of the gain came as a result of a depression in the May survey when sites at the large German hosting company xlink.net failed to respond.

A hosting system with some 90,000 sites located at Digital Nation replaced Zeus with Apache, reducing Zeus's total number of sites by around a third.

Akamai adopt Windows 2000 for streaming media caching

Akamai has been one of the leading proponents of Linux systems, using a huge number of Linux based systems for its http caching topology, and was recently reported as taking 20% of VA Linux's output. However, it seems to have adopted Windows 2000 for caching streaming media, with at least a few hundred systems already in place running Windows 2000. Windows 2000 has not previously been thought of a fabric of the internet infrastructure, and to see the leading caching company adopt it alongside a large existing Linux infrastructure will shock many.

Following last months article on the removal of MacOSX from the www.apple.com load balancing pool, it has been pointed out that many of the Mac community sites also run on Unix based systems.

At time of writing MacAddict run Apache on Linux, while MacCentral and MacOSRumors run Apache on FreeBSD, and MacWeek and MacWorld. run Netscape-Enterprise on Solaris. Ironically, Apple have now reintroduced MacOSX into the www.apple.com load balancing pool, where it serves around 20% of requests.

Elsewhere, other vendor specific publications often do run the technology that they write about, even when this is outside the mainstream. Oracle Magazine runs Oracle Web Listener on Solaris. Similarly, SCO World run Netscape-FastTrack on SCO Unix.

However, many of the Windows magazines avoid running NT on their own sites. MaximumPC run Apache on Linux and PC Magazine run Apache on Solaris, as does Windows Magazine. ZDNet publish a number of PC magazines, but use Netscape-Enterprise on Solaris to run their web site, just like PC World. while Win98 Magazine run Apache and BSD/OS. The exception that proves the rule is Windows NT Magazine which loyally runs Microsoft-IIS on NT4.

Nu.nl meldt dat Ray Lane opstapt als directeur van Oracle. Ray bekleedde daar de tweede positie, achter opperhoofd Larry Ellison. Volgens Oracle houdt het vertrek geen verband maken met eerdere indianenverhalen over bedrijfsspionage bij Microsoft:

Lane was bij Oracle tweede man achter Larry Ellison. Hij blijft wel lid van de raad van bestuur van Oracle. Lane werkte sinds 1992 voor Oracle, dat vorig jaar een recordomzet van ruim 10 miljard dollar boekte en na Microsoft het grootste softwarebedrijf ter wereld is.

De Oracle-woordvoerder benadrukte dat het vertrek niets van doen heeft met het spionageverhaal dat enige dagen geleden opdook. Oracle gaf toe dat het een detectivebedrijf had ingeschakeld om Microsoft te onderzoeken. Oracle is een van de drijvende krachten achter de monopoliezaak tegen Microsoft.

Matrox Users laat ons weten dat de Duitse site 3DCenter.de de mogelijke specs van de Matrox G800 heeft gepost. Als deze info juist is dan krijgt de G800 een pixel fillrate van 600MPix/s en ondersteunt-ie tripple texturing. Bij de huidige games heb je daar nog erg weinig aan, maar 't geeft developers de mogelijkheid om wat flexibeler met textures om te gaan.

De genoemde release date van september is volgens Matrox Users onwaarschijnlijk. De G450 is nog niet eens op de markt en bovendien heeft Matrox toch al geen al te sterke reputatie wat betreft de levering van nieuwe produkten:

The leaked roadmap from Matrox that was circulating a while back put the G450 down for a Q1 2000 release and the G800 for a Q3 2000 release. Personally my money is on a late Q4 release for the G800, but you never know I'm probably completely wrong as usual.

Verder wist Matrox Users deze Italiaanse G450 ad van het net te harken. Naast een aantal suggestieve beeldelementen die de voordelen van Dual Head moeten benadrukken , heeft de advertentie ook een afbeelding van de G450 die doet vermoeden dat er op de PCB geen connector voor de Rainbow Runner-G aanwezig is (thanks Gametech voor de tip).

ConZito schrijft: "Er is een probleem ontdekt met de T-Bird versie van de Athlon in de Gateway 1Ghz systemen. Deze worden nu vervangen door de Athlon classic totdat het probleem is opgelost.":

Gateway is replacing the "Thunderbird" processor with older "classic" Athlon-based models until it can isolate the problem, which it discovered internally on June 12.
