It appears that Abit isn't going to be the only game in town anymore (at least when it comes to the dual S370 crowd). MSI is jumping on the wagon and offering the MS-6321. It appears to be a pretty sweet board with alot of "nextgen" features like ATA100 (RAID even?), 1394 Firewire, etc.

Goed nieuws voor de linux gebruikers, het bedrijf Intervideo heeft een officiële licentie en komt deze lente met een player genaamd linDVD .

The lack of DVD support for Linux has come to the forefront lately, pushing some developers to come up with solutions that included an unauthorized DVD decoder for Linux, which resulted in lawsuits filed by the DVD industry.

InterVideo has a long-standing Content Scrambling System (CSS) license, enabling it to produce and market DVD player/decoder software without violating copyright or other laws.

InterVideo sales and marketing head Joe Monastiero says the Linux platform presents a variety of opportunities for the company to expand its existing technology base, including DVD software.

"Of notable interest is the set-top environment; however, even the PC space has enough interest in Linux to make our development worthwhile," he said. "Additionally, as should be obvious based on the reports generated by Wired News a few months ago regarding DVD and Linux, the reason why the CSS hack was done for the Linux community is because traditional Windows multimedia developers writing Linux code are not exactly plentiful."

The product, dubbed LinDVD, will allow users to play back DVD movies, interactive DVD titles, MPEG video content, and Video CDs on PCs that are equipped with a DVD drive without the need for a hardware decoder card. The decoder/player includes integrated MPEG1 and MPEG2 file playback, a powerful VCD 2.0 player, and SVCD playback. A full multi-channel Dolby Digital (TM) audio decoder will be included.

Riva Station weet ons te vertellen dat er een nieuwe bios uit is voor de Asus V6800 / V6600 GeForce videokaarten. De update geeft je de mogelijkheid om Sideband Adressing Support te activeren tijdens de setup:

ASUS released a new card Bios for the AGP-V6800 Pure, V6800 Deluxe and V6600 (Pure). These new version allow to enable Sideband Adressing Support during installation. For V6800 Pure there are two new versions available: v2.10.02.04 und v2.10.02.04a. I donŽt know whatŽs the difference here.

Note for installation: The bios exe files are selfextracting winzip archives that load the bios flasher automatic after unzipping the files. I got an error message when I did this with the V6800 Deluxe bios file. It seems thereŽs something wrong with the path because it canŽt start winflash.exe. If this happens you can unpack the files "by hand" - open the exe in the winzip software and extract the files manualy. Start winflash.exe manualy.

Mylex) UW scsi adapter nu alleen nog maar een hoop gebrabbel op m'n scherm
tovert, met een niet startend systeem als gevolg. Zonder SCSI werkte alles perfect, adapter in een ander slot hielp helaas ook niet, terug naar de vorige bios versie gelukkig wel.

De mannen van iXBT-Hardware hebben een review geschreven van de AOpen AX64 Pro, een VIA Apollo Pro 133A moederbord met slechts 4 PCI sloten, 1xISA, 1xAMR, 1xAGP en 3xDIMM. Zoals eerder aangekondigd maakt de AX64 Pro gebruik van een Die-Hard BIOS, dat simpelweg betekent dat in geval van nood (je verneukt je BIOS) een tweede BIOS chip gebruikt kan worden om een backup terug te zetten. Als conclusie merkt de reviewer op dat het plankje erg stabiel is, vrij goed geschikt is voor overclockers en over een goede layout beschikt. De prijs is echter wel onnodig duur vanwege het gouden heatsinkje en met 4 PCI sloten is de mogelijkheid tot uitbreiden redelijk beperkt:

AOpen AX64 Pro is equipped with a usual universal AGP slot supporting 3.3V AGP 1x/2x graphics cards as well as 1.5V AGP 4x ones. As for PCI slots, we have to upset you really: there are only four of them on AOpen AX64 Pro mainboard. On the one hand, each PCI slot has its own IRQ in this case and hence there are fewer problems occurring when you assemble your system. However, on the other hand, we can't regard it as an optimal solution, because the slots may simply turn out insufficient. Moreover, as you have probably noticed, almost all the today's ATX mainboard manufacturers equip their products with five or even six PCI slots. AOpen also has one ISA slot (shared with the last PCI slot) and one AMR slot, but this can hardly make up for so few PCI slots. Especially taking into account that the devices with these buses are not that popular now and besides, the use of an ISA-device will deprive you of the fourth PCI slot. Full-size cards can be installed into any PCI slots, however, not into ISA: it doesn't fit for large cards.

PCExtremes brengt ons een review van de 10 speed IDE DVD speler van Pioneer, de 104S. Hieronder een hap uit de conlusie voor je:

Watching DVD’s with the Pioneer was a Treat. All Three movies run on Dual Layer, and not once did I notice a skip or pause while it switched layers. One thing that can get a little annoying about the 104S, it produces a slight hum while playing movies. You don’t notice it in those high action moments, however you do in the quiet dramatic scenes. Depending on what video card you have and whether you have a DVD Decoder card (Sigma Hollywood+ for example), picture quality can vary. If you have an ATI card you in luck, they seem to have cleaner DVD playback.

If you’re looking for the next big multimedia upgrade, or just looking to replace that old CD-Rom with the latest format. Consider the Pioneer 104S, it looks sweet, plays well and is made by one of the industry leaders in DVD’s. But first you’ll have to try to get a hold of one of these babies, they seem to be hard to find…go figure.

Bij PC Stats is een review gepost van de 19" Sony E400 monitor, die zoals bekend een Trinitron buis gebruikt die een maximale resolutie van 1800 x 1440 @ 60Hz tevoorschijn kan toveren. De reviewer was desondanks van mening dat de kwaliteit van de buis de erg hoge prijs niet rechtvaardigde:

The Sony E400 is a really nice monitor, however the price and lack luster performance (seemingly anyway) at 1600*1200 is disheartening. Then again, Sony has never been a "value" leader, and their displays are always of high quality. It’s hard to finger out a single one of Sony's competitors that have such a high quality display in their "low-end" solutions. Although the price difference between Viewsonic’s "E" line and Sony’s "E" line is around $150 CAD ($103USD) you can see the obvious difference in quality between the two.

Does the Sony E400 deserve my recommendation? It unfortunately does not. While the Sony E400 is definately the BEST looking "value" line monitor that has ever seen the light of day. BUT Sony is charging you a lot more for their "value" line, than their competitors are for their "professional" line of monitors. I would recommend the KDS AV195TF if you must have a FD Trinitron CRT. I recommend the Samsung 900NF if you want a quality Dynaflat AG monitor. Ultimately I can only recommend the E400 for people that MUST get a Sony monitor (remember this is the most reasonably priced Sony monitor of all time.)

Kuik, hoofd opsporing van de auteursrechtenorganisatie Buma Stemra, zaterdag in het actualiteitenprogramma Nova. Volgens Kuik is uit onderzoek van de IFPI, de internationale brancheorganisatie voor cd's en platen, gebleken dat 95 procent van de illegale cd's in legale perserijen is gemaakt. De reguliere perserijen zouden met de georganiseerde criminalitiet samenwerken, omdat ze door de malaise in de branche nog capaciteit over hebben.

De Singaporese Hardware Zonen hebben een review van de AOpen AK72 online gemikt. Dit KX133 plankje beoordeelden zij met een rating van 3,5/5, een niet al te vrolijke score die volgens de reviewers is te wijten aan een matige performance (trager dan Irongate borden), een beperkte hoeveelheid busspeed settings en stabiliteitsproblemen in een volgepakt systeem:

Stability was an issue, as stated earlier. You need power, lots of it, as with most Athlon systems. The system hanged a few times while I was trying to get the 3D Mark 2000 benchmarks. After disconnecting a few devices, I managed to get it running without any problems. This is weird, but I am not surprised since the GeForce does suck a lot more power than most other cards. However, if you compare it with the K7 Pro, it seems that the K7 Pro had better power management as I did not need to disconnect any devices. The AK72 fails to impress me in this aspect. So, guys, if you're going to hook up a GeForce with the AK72, be prepared to tweak your system a little.

Volgens ZDNet overweegt Intel de release van een 1,2GHz Pentium III in de tweede helft van dit jaar. Intel voelt zich tot deze stap genoodzaakt omdat verwacht wordt dat AMD na de introductie van de Thunderbird in mei vrij snel de 1GHz barrière zal doorbreken:

The motivation to raise performance comes, in part, because of the available "headroom" on the chip. But analysts said it will also come out of necessity, due to competition with AMD and demand from its PC-maker customers.

Headroom is, essentially, the amount of additional clock speed a version of a processor can be enhanced with after its introduction, due to manufacturing refinements. Intel's current-generation Pentium III chip, according to convention, should have an additional 200MHz left in it.

Sake bracht ons een een link naar de Asus K7V review van Italian 3DNow! Zone. Deze KX133 plank heeft 5xPCI, 1xAMR, 3xDIMM, een AGP Pro slot en busspeed settings tot 150MHz. Onze Italiaanse vrienden kregen 'm overigens niet boven de voor EV6 borden magische grens van 110Mhz. Desondanks zijn ze tevreden over het bord:

The card K7V of Asus has shown, from the tests that I have done, to be very stable and reliable, and it allows to have a performance increase over the AMD 750 - based cards, even if such increase, for now it is not notable. To brief however the thick use of very big textures and the increase of the traffic on the AGP port (AGP 2x's 512 Mb/sec are not so much) make the VIAKX133 chipset a winner. Asus K7V is built with a lot of care, from the components' disposition to the quality of these: the number of capacitors is enough elevated, since they allow to maintain stable the electric signal for all the board's traces. The ATX connector is near behind the DIMM slots, allowing the user to equip his Athlon processor with every over-sized cooler on the market (Alpha and Global-Win). The AGP Pro slot, despite is now nearly useless, could be revealed useful in the immediate future, since the video cards' market is evolving with a maddish speed, equal almost to that of the cpu.
