Micron heeft op het Intel Developer Forum in Palm Springs een prototype DDR chipset met dual channel DDR SDRAM interface gedemonstreerd. Dual DDR zou bij gebruik van twee PC2100 reepjes een maximaal theoretische bandwidth van 4,26GB/s moeten kunnen trekken:

One system was a single unbuffered solution, with one 128MB DIMM inside, while the other system, using two North Bridges, was a dual channel DDR solution.

Het akkoord dat de Consumentenbond met Superweb bereikte over teruggave van abonnementsgeld aan klagende gebruikers heeft niet alleen blije gevolgen. Volgens de Automatiseringsgids dreigt Superweb failliet te gaan als klanten massaal besluiten om hun poen terug te eisen (thanks JURRiE voor de tip):

Volgens directeur De Jager zou terugbetaling het einde betekenen van Superweb: "Die zesduizend opzeggingen kosten ons al een half miljoen gulden." Hij zoekt de oplossing van de problemen in beperking van de toegang tot 50 uur per maand. De huidige klanten zijn veelal zware gebruikers die langdurig online zijn.

De bodem van de schatkist bij Superweb is in zicht. Het bedrijf draait structureel met verlies, zegt De Jager. Pas bij 100.000 abonnees kan Superweb winst maken. (pli)

Bij Sharky Extreme is een review online geplant van de Asus V6800 Deluxe GeForce kaart met DDR geheugen. Net als in eerdere reviews is de reviewer erg te spreken over de uitgebreide features en snelheid van deze kaart:

Performing marginally better than the DDR-based competition, the decision in which card to buy won't be swayed by 3D speed. Instead, the features, bundle and quality will decide which card makes it home to your AGP slot.

While the V6800 Deluxe is one of the most expensive consumer accelerators on the market, you undoubtedly get what you pay for. De uitspraak van Bloomberg dat Microsoft open Source zou willen gaan met Windows is volgens een MS woordvoerder niet waar. Bill pleit wel voor een schikking in de antitrust zaak, maar niet via deze weg. Hieronder een hap uit dit bericht van GA-Source:

Microsoft on Thursday strongly denied that Chairman Bill Gates had told Bloomberg Television in an interview that he would be willing to open the Windows operating system source code to competitors to settle an antitrust suit with the U.S. Justice Department, reports Reuters.

``Bill did not make any of the comments attributed to him about the settlement,'' Microsoft spokesman Jim Cullinan said. ''The comments they said Bill made are just not true.''

The suit by the Justice Department and 19 states is in a mediation phase and both sides have been instructed by the mediating judge, Richard Posner, not to talk to the media about details of the case.

[...] ``He just said that we would be doing our best to settle the case,'' Cullinan said, adding that such statements were the company's routine way of answering questions about the antitrust suit.

Microsoft planned to make a transcript of the interview available on its Web site later on Thursday, Cullinan said.

Intel heeft op het Intel Developer Forum laten weten dat het voor de Willamette ('Willy') volledig op een Rambus-only strategie mikt. Eerder dit jaar leek het er nog op dat Rambus geleidelijk zou worden gedropt door Intel, maar daar is nu totaal geen sprake meer van. Willy zal gebruik maken van de Tahema chipset, een doorontwikkeling van de i840 chipset met dual Rambus interface. Bij gebruik van 2 RIMMs geeft dit een maximale geheugen bandwidth van maar liefst 3,2GByte/s. De geheugen bandbreedte is hiermee perfect in evenwicht met de bandbreedte van de 'quad pumped' data bus waarop Willy met de north bridge mag communiceren. EETimes schrijft dat Willy volgens Intel dankzij dual Rambus 10 tot 30% sneller is dan een config met SDRAM:

For the Willamette processor generation, which moves to clock speeds of 1.5 GHz and beyond, Intel is projecting that the dual-channel Rambus approach will prove its worth, delivering 10 percent to 30 percent performance improvements as measured across a suite of benchmarks.

As Rambus Inc. chief executive officer Geoff Tate asked, "Why would a user want to buy a system based on a Willamette processor and then give up 10 percent to 30 percent performance by matching that with SDRAMs?"

But SDRAM technology isn't standing still, said Bert McComas, principal analyst at InQuest (Gilbert, Ariz.). The PC266 double-date-rate (DDR) SDRAMs will come closer to keeping up with Rambus than Intel's benchmarks indicate, he said. After that comes a seamless transition to the DDR-2 technology, the specifications for which are now being finalized

By not supporting SDRAMs with Willamette, "Intel has left itself open to [Advanced Micro Devices'] Athlon coming in under Willamette and filling a huge market space" in terms of cost/performance, McComas said.

Sander Sassen van HardwareCentral heeft een artikel in elkaar gezet over de Intel Willamette, die in oktober gereleased wordt en aan het einde van dit jaar kloksnelheden van 1.5GHz moet trekken. In het artikel o.a. uitleg over SSE2, de 20-stage pipeline en Trace Cache. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

Although Intel’s Willamette will probably be the first CPU to break the 1.5 GHz mark, due to its long pipeline and long latencies, the actual performance of the Willamette in comparison to the Pentium III Coppermine may not be all that spectacular if we compare them running at similar clockspeed.

However if Intel can give software developers enough incentive to start using SSE2 for doing floating point calculations, the Willamette will offer a performance level which is unparalleled by any current or upcoming CPU. It takes time to build up software support and re-write applications, but Intel has proven to be very good at supporting developers in the past, thus they could very well pull it off.

Overall, Intel has implemented quite some inventive solutions in the Willamette CPU to be able to reach clockspeeds in excess of 1.5 GHz. The new SSE2 instructions, the long pipeline, the trace cache and the improved branch prediction algorithms all attribute to a CPU that could promise to be a wolf in sheep’s clothing. We have to give credit to Asus's V6800 Deluxe, which is the first truly redesigned GeForce card, and the only card we tested that doesn't use the basic Nvidia reference design. Asus proves that they know what they're doing hardware wise, we just wish these cards would get out on the market sooner rather than later. Leadtek's card sure is speedy, but has definite driver issues that need to be addressed before this card should be considered. Guillemot's card looks to be the best combination card, with a bunch of nice features and a nice driver set. Creative's card is your basic generic card, it's available everywhere, but it's not the best performer, and the driver sets aren't getting updated that often. We like Elsa's card too, while performance was good, we love the fully working Windows 2000 drivers, which we have yet to see from any other company.

Veterans of Apple Computer and America Online are setting their sights on the Macintosh equivalent of Linux--in other words, a version of Linux your mother could use.

A start-up called Eazel is at work on a graphical user interface (GUI) for Linux that founders say will extend to every aspect of the Linux computing experience. The project is an extension of the Gnome user interface.

With the current Gnome and the competing KDE user interfaces for Linux, it's still hard to avoid typing in commands, an activity notoriously unpalatable to average users. Though showing some signs of growth for desktop use, Linux still is used predominantly on servers.

Eazel's technology and management team has deep roots in Apple and AOL, the two companies most famous for creating and marketing consumer-friendly computing products.

The ArtX part includes a graphics core that supports the high-end geometry processing functions of transform and lighting, which could distinguish the part from growing competition from Intel, Via Technologies and others. The ArtX integrated graphics part can work with either SDRAM or double-data-rate parts, giving it a possible home across a range of low- to high-end desktops, he added.

3D Chipset meldt dat Entech Powerstrip versie 2.64 gereleased heeft. Nieuw in deze versie is verbeterde support voor Windows 2000 en desktop icon management voor Win9x. AGP fast writes en sidebanding kunnen on-the-fly aangezet worden.

PowerStrip 2.64 is now available for downloading, with improved Windows 2000 support for those of you who have, within a couple of hours after the official release of the new OS, grown tired of waiting for updated drivers and utilities from your board manufacturer. Intel heeft toegegeven dat er serieuze bugs in hun Memory Translator Hub zitten waardoor er memory errors kunnen optreden als i820 en i840 borden met SDRAM geheugen worden uitgerust. Als gevolg heeft Intel 3 moederbord designs van hun roadmap moeten schrappen (zie ook deze posting). Omdat weinig gebruikers zin hebben om het peperdure Rambus geheugen te gaan gebruiken verwachten analysten dat deze zaak een groot probleem kan vormen voor Intel. Dell is inmiddels al gestopt met het leveren van SDRAM bij hun i820 / i840 based PC's.

According to Intel, memory errors may result from the combined use of the memory-repeater hub (known as MRH-S), which is used to translate native RDRAM support to SDRAM, and ECC (error correction coding).

Intel said it believes few customers will be affected since most 820 and 840 chip set customers using ECC, commonly in workstation and servers, are likely to have gone with Rambus memory for greater performance.

However, customers seeking a lower-cost server or workstation solution may have elected to go with less-expensive SDRAM over RDRAM in order to get the highest amount of memory for their money.

"We are informing vendors that certain server platforms using the memory repeater hub as well as the error correction coding have been experiencing memory issues or errors," said Dan Francisco, an Intel spokesman.

If the problem is actually tied to just the memory-translation hub, it could spell big trouble for Intel, said Mike Feibus, principal analyst at Mercury Research in Scottsdale, Ariz.

"We're predicting that more than half of the 840 chip sets that will ship this quarter will be configured with SDRAM," Feibus said. "So if there's trouble with the memory translator, that could pose major problems for Intel."

De Windows 2000 Challenge (2000 minuten durend internet spel waarbij deelnemers op zoek zijn naar OEG, een ontsnapt stuk intelligente software) moest door Microsoft Nederland afgelast worden vanwege Denial of Service aanvallen op hun servers. Hieronder de info afkomstig van Computer Planet.

De introductie van Windows 2000 gaat in Nederland gepaard met een spel, de Windows 2000 Challenge. Internetters moeten op zoek naar OEG, een ontsnapt stuk intelligente software. Het spel, dat 2000 minuten moest duren, is door Microsoft Nederland afgeblazen. Deelnemers krijgen een e-mail waarin het einde van 't spel wordt aangekondigd en dezelfde tekst staat op de website. Reden voor het voortijdige einde is een constante reeks Denial of Service (DoS) aanvallen op de servers. Bij een DoS-aanval worden servers bestookt met foutieve verzoeken voor informatie. De server raakt hierdoor zo overbelast dat 'legale' aanvragen niet langer kunnen worden afgehandeld. Omdat het spel tijdgebonden is (de ontknoping had moeten samenvallen met een toespraak door Bill Gates) kan het spel niet op een ander tijdstip worden gespeeld. Het prijzengeld van 20.000 euro vervalt nu aan een goed doel. Planet Multimedia bericht dat de hackergroep Hit2000 door de Telegraaf om advies is gevraagd. Hit2000 beschuldigt Microsoft Nederland van een lakse houding. Hit2000 zou het bedrijf al geruime tijd terug hebben laten weten dat er beveilingsproblemen in de site zitten. G. Mansur van Hit2000: 'Ze hadden zich ook met filters tegen een Denial of Service'-attack kunnen beschermen. Dat heeft Microsoft nagelaten.'

McCormick stuurde ons een link naar dit artikel van C|NET waarin wordt gemeld dat Bill Gates bereid is de source code van Windows vrij te geven aan de concurrentie als schikking voor de antitrust zaak die het DoJ tegen de softwaregigant aanspande. De aanklagers vinden het wel een interessant idee omdat ze op deze manier Microsoft's marktaandeel kunnen verdunnen zonder een mogelijke breakup van het bedrijf.

Microsoft is seeking a settlement with the Justice Department and 19 states that have filed an antitrust suit against the software giant and would ''do our absolute best to achieve it,'' Gates said in an interview.

Gates said he would agree to open the source code for the company's Windows operating system as part of a settlement, a move that would allow competitors to create and sell their own modified versions of Windows.

State antitrust enforcers said that Gates's offer could form the basis for further talks. They've been intrigued by the idea because it would help dilute Microsoft's market domination without breaking up the company.

''If Gates is serious, I think it could be a significant development that would merit further discussions among the parties,'' said Stephen Houck, a New York antitrust lawyer who was lead counsel for the 19 states at the Microsoft trial.

Microsoft and the U.S. government still remain far apart on terms of a possible settlement. The government is seeking to break up the software giant, and settlement talks so far have failed to produce an agreement.
