Mijn mailbox werd vandaag opgevrolijkt met deze redelijk melige mailing met het bericht dat Bellen.com, Internetten.nl en Belwijzer.nl sites van de 15-jarige Ben Woldring als eerste Nederlandse websites over zijn gegaan op Windows 2000 Advanced Server:

Usquert (Gr.), 17 februari - De populaire websites www.bellen.com, www.belwijzer.nl en www.internetten.nl gaan deze week als eerste in Nederland over op het besturingssysteem Windows 2000 Advanced Server. Deze websites, van scholier en jongste Internet ondernemer van Nederland, Ben Woldring, bieden consumenten, bedrijven en instellingen de mogelijkheid om de tarieven en diensten van de aanbieders van vast-net telefonie, mobiele telefonie en Internet in Nederland snel met elkaar te kunnen vergelijken De sites worden dagelijks door ruim vierduizend bezoekers geraadpleegd. Vanaf begin 1999 tot heden hebben de sites meer dan 500.000 bezoekers getrokken

Na een paar jaar op verschillende servers met diverse besturingssystemen te hebben gedraaid, zullen de sites van Ben Woldring op 17 februari 2000 worden overgezet op een nieuwe server bij PLANT Internet Solutions te Amsterdam. De nieuwe server draait onder Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server, het nieuwe server-besturingssysteem van Microsoft dat op 17 februari officieel wordt gelanceerd. De keuze voor Windows 2000 is gebaseerd op het feit dat het sneller en stabieler is dan andere besturingssystemen. Windows 2000 levert tevens belangrijke prestatievoordelen ten opzichte van andere platforms. Websites en webapplicaties draaien sneller onder Windows 2000 en Windows 2000 Server biedt een optimale prijs-prestatieverhouding. Zo kan de verwachte groei in bezoekersaantallen goed worden opgevangen.

Ben Woldring is eind 1998 gestart met de website www.bellen.com naar aanleiding van een schoolproject over Internet. Op deze site worden de diensten en tarieven van de Nederlandse telecomaanbieders met elkaar vergeleken en vindt de bezoeker nieuws, informatie en links over dit onderwerp. Op www.internetten.nl wordt dezelfde soort informatie gegeven maar dan over Internet access- en hostingproviders, terwijl bezoekers op www.belwijzer.nl online kunnen uitrekenen wat voor hen de voordeligste abonnementsvorm en telecom aanbieder is. Daarbij wordt ook rekening gehouden met gesprekskosten naar mobiele telefoons of naar het buitenland.

ActiveWin (die tegenwoordig noodgedwongen als ActiveNetwork door het leven gaat) heeft een zeer uitgebreide, 18-pagina's lange review in elkaar getikt van Windows 2000 Professional Edition. Hieronder een gedeelte over de vernieuwde Graphic User Interface (GUI) van Bill's nieuwe speeltje:

Windows 2000 is more easy to use and more customizable! Windows 2000 comes with new 65536 colors desktop icons, new desktop background colors and new & useful enhancements such as the possibility to select the tray icons with the keyboard. The new default background color of the desktop is a light blue. Also the gray color of all the Windows programs is much clearer than the Windows 98 gray. Your starting point - the start menu - is now smart so it lists the most often programs at the top of the menu and it hides the other at the bottom of the menu. The menus of Windows 2000 are all animated like in Office 2000. IE 5.01 is included so you’re sure to have the latest available release of Microsoft Internet Explorer. The explorer contains a new “My Pictures” folder where you can store all your photos and pictures: When you click on a picture a little printable preview appears in the left panel (you’ll also be able to zoom or rotate it).

It also offers a new miniature feature that will display in each folder previews of your picture files, HTML files and multimedia files (For Example: if you select an MP3 file in the explorer you don’t have to launch the Windows Media Player - it’ll be automatically played by the Explorer). All the software that used the API to display the open & save as boxes will now use Microsoft Office 2000 like open/save boxes: very useful to quickly locate a document as it shows quick shortcuts to reach My Documents, Desktop, Network favorites… As always the last opened documents are stored in the documents menu of the start menu. Advanced users will appreciate the fact that some of the start menu menus can be ‘expandable’. This feature that was first introduced by Norton Navigator 95 is at least integrated to the Microsoft operating system.

Smakkie schrijft dat Logitech Mouseware 9.0 voor Windows 2000 klaar heeft staan. Deze versie werkt overigens ook onder Win9x en bevat de WebWheel feature. Klik hier om te downloaden of lees eerst de readme file door.

Hilko schrijft: "Het was al bekend dat per 28 februari nieuwe prijzen zullen gaan gelden voor de Athlon, op AMD Zone staan de prijzen (in dollars) vast vermeld. Je moet er wel rekening mee houden dat er nog wat aan invoerrechten, belastingen en andere irritante zooi over heen komt, dus vermenigvuldig met 3,5 en je komt ongeveer op de prijs uit.

Maar in ieder geval, het meest interessante van deze melding is dat de 550 ook dood verklaard wordt per 28 februari! Nadat eerder dit jaar de 500 is "uitgefaseerd" is nu de 550 ook End Of Life. Grappig overigens is ook dat DOA niet de juiste term is. DOA staat voor defect on arrival, wat betekend dat het product defect is/was bij aankomst ."

Er waren veel mensen die ons kwamen vertellen dat Asus bios versie v1008 voor haar K7M Athlon plank klaar heeft liggen (nu eens geen beta), Alan was de eerste. Je kunt het zaakie hier van Asus' FTP afplukken.

Hilko schrijft: "Bij Ace's Hardware hebben ze alle technische gegevens (geruchten) van de Intel Willamette processor bij elkaar geraapt en er een net en duidelijk artikel van gemaakt met veel veelbelovende informatie. Ace is een AMD fan en is erg sceptisch t.o.v. de lange pipe's die op de Pentium IV te vinden zullen zijn. Er wordt ook uitgelegd waarom de Willamette toch zeer snel zal zijn. Het is geen lang artikel maar wel zeer de moeite waard. Erg interessant is ook zijn eindconclusie":

We have tried to point out in this article that all the clockspeed craziness comes with a price. The performance of Willamette, clock-per-clock might not be much higher than the PIII. Albert Yu, a senior VP at Intel Corporation, indicated that Willamette will be 30% faster than the Coppermine, which will reach 1 GHz in the third quarter of this year.

As the Willamette is supposed to start at 1.3 or 1.4 GHz, that could mean that the Willamette is mostly faster because it boasts higher clockspeeds, not higher IPC. In other words, AMD's Thunderbird should be able, to compete well with the Willamette clock for clock.

Meer Willamette artikelen vind je bij Tech-Review en hier bij Voodoo Extreme. The Register meldt verder in dit artikel dat de Willamette 1 oktober niet op 1.5GHz geïntroduceerd zal worden, ook al is hij op deze snelheid al wel gedemonstreerd op het Intel Developers Forum (zie ook deze posting).

Hilko schrijft: "Bij SlotA.com (de zustersite van AMD Zone) vond ik een link naar een pagina op de site van VIA met een lijst van mainboard fabrikanten die ook KX133 chipsets gebruiken op hun planken. En zowaar... ook een Abit K7 board staat er tussen. Verder zijn er nog geen details bekend, maar dit is in ieder geval veelbelovend."

Koen Crijns van Hardwareinfo.net kreeg via Paradigit Computers de mogelijkheid om de Athlon 800 en 850MHz eens onder de loep te nemen. Hieronder een gedeelte uit zijn conclusie:

De voordelen en nadelen op een rij: De Athlon 850 MHz is absoluut de snelste CPU die op dit moment verkrijgbaar is. Door de introductie van de nieuwe CPU zullen de prijzen van andere Athlon CPU’s blijven dalen. Het enige nadeel van de nieuwe Athlons is en blijft de vervelende 2/5 cache divider. Met een Athlon met on-die cache in het vooruitzicht is het misschien verstandig om nog heel even te wachten met het aanschaffen van een nieuwe CPU. Zoals altijd is het in ieder geval zo dat je veel betaalt om de snelste te zijn. De prijzen van de nieuwe 800 MHz en 850 MHz staan uiteraard niet in verhouding tot die van de langzamere varianten.

Wij feliciteren AMD in ieder geval met het opnieuw behalen van de officieuze titel “fabrikant van de CPU met de hoogste kloksnelheid” en kunnen niet veel anders doen dan aftellen tot Intel de Pentium III Coppermine 866 MHz zal aankondigen.

Een mannetje van Lost Circuits heeft een vroege Alpha versie van het Tyan S2380 KX 133 moederbord op de kop weten te tikken, waarvan hier de review te vinden is. In de retail versie zal het AMR slot omgeruild worden voor een ISA slot wat voor velen toch vrij handig zal zijn. Onboard audio kan als optie erbij genomen worden. Hieronder wat meer info:

There is not much to say about those at present, simply because, as stated earlier, the board tested was a very early alpha revision, without documentation, manual or drivers. We do know that the layout of the board will be changed substantially in the production version. In addition the BIOS will be tuned and debugged to take care of some glitches.

Changes for the final revision will include the obliteration of the AMR slot in favor of a good old-fashioned ISA slot (bravo for that one), in addition the jumper battery next to the DIMM slots will disappear. The jumper for disabling AMR sound was already gone in the revision we had.

The final production version will still maintain a 6 / 1 / 1 (PCI / ISA / AGP) layout. In addition, there are debates of whether the onboard sound will survive or be offered as optional feature.

There are a few things that will not undergo substantial changes. Primarily the capacitor configuration should not be changed. It may be overkill to have two 2200 µF caps next to eight 1500 µF Low ESR capacitors flanking the Slot A and in addition run six I.Q. 1500 µF caps to buffer the voltage generators. Add no less than nineteen 1000 µF Sanyo caps and for EMF suppression a total of two 100 µF YJ, one 25 µF and seventeen 10 µF capacitors and you have the cleanest power factory on the planet.

In onze afwezigheid zijn er bij AnandTech een drietal verslagen geplaatst van het Intel Developers Forum in Palm Springs California. In deel 1 wordt er o.a. aandacht geschonken aan Intel's Willamette Processor die eind dit jaar beschikbaar wordt op 1.5GHz. Vanwege de erg snelle Integer unit die op tweemaal de kloksnelheid draait (3GHz) zullen vooral office appplicaties qua snelheid er zeer op vooruit gaan:

The Willamette will begin shipping in hundred thousand quantities towards the end of this year, at clock speeds estimated above 1.5GHz. That estimation comes from the aforementioned demonstration at 1.5GHz and the statement that we should expect some higher clock speeds as the manufacturing process matures.

[...] One of the biggest features of the Willamette is its ability to run the Integer ALU (Arithmetic Logic Unit) at twice the clock speed of the CPU. This means that on a 1.5GHz Willamette, the Integer ALU is actually running at 3.0GHz. For games this won’t increase performance by a large amount due to their largely floating point oriented performance dependency however in business applications and other applications that are primarily integer performance dependent the Willamette will truly excel. [break]In deel 2 is wat interessante info te vinden over Serial ATA en USB 2.0. Vooral dat eerste is erg leuk omdat dit het einde zal betekenen van de lompe IDE kabels, er wordt minder stroom verbruikt en je hebt geen gedoe meer met master / slave settings:[/break] The future of Serial ATA is being insured with careful planning. In fact, Serial ATA is expected to last us at least 10 years. Future data rates may be introduced simply by increasing the clock. In fact the roadmap already calls for two follow-ups to Serial ATA, which will double and then double again the transfer rates. Look for Serial ATA 1X to be available in mid 2001 and offer 1.5 gigabits/sec, which translates to an effective 150MB/s. Since Serial ATA will be a point to point protocol, the concept of master/slave no longer exists and each drive will not need to share bandwidth.

Further, unlike the original Parallel ATA spec, Serial ATA is being designed with power management and mobility in mind. With fewer signals in the interface, power consumption is lower. Further, the interface and drive supports native power management that is transparent to the rest of the system. Finally, the connector for 3.5” and 2.5” drives will be identical, which will greatly increase flexibility of mobile and desktop designs.

Hieronder een pic van de CPU en wat info over de i460GX chipset waar de Itanium gebruik van zal maken:[/break] The CPU itself is a socketed design, but there are no power pins on the connector. Instead of supplying power to the CPU via its connector pins, there is a separate power connector on the edge of the Itanium card itself that is used to supply power to the CPU. The reasoning behind this is that by supplying power to the CPU via a separate connector, Intel could decrease the pin count of the CPU itself while still maintaining a high density pin interface.

The chipset support is provided courtesy of the i460GX chipset, the successor to the i450GX, a high-end Slot-2 chipset. The 460GX supports PC100 SDRAM and PC1600 DDR SDRAM only, but we were given the impression that shipping Itanium systems would be using DDR SDRAM alone. The reason for using SDRAM & DDR SDRAM is because most high end servers and workstations feature large amounts of memory, and a more expensive memory technology such as RDRAM would increase the overall cost of Itanium servers by an almost unmanageable amount.

So does Windows 2000 have 63,000 defects? The answer is a flat no. There was an internal development paper that described a broad set of focus areas for the team that mentioned the 63,000 number. However, without understanding our development process (which wasn’t described in that paper) reporting such a number is totally meaningless when taken out of context.

Het zou mij in ieder geval NIET verbazen als het 63000 bugs had...
