Uit de resultaten van de Netcraft webserver survey over de maand februari van 2000 blijkt dat het marktaandeel van Apache een record hoogte heeft bereikt. De positie van Microsoft (Internet Information Server) laat ondertussen voor de vierde achtereenvolgende maand een negatieve groei zien:

Apache hit a new high this month, with some 58% of the internet's web sites now running on Apache. Part of the gain came from Planet moving to Apache/1.3.11 from a locally modified and rebranded earlier version of Apache with a customised server signature. Planet hosts well over 100,000 sites including the UK's largest dialup ISP, Freeserve. The Apache conference is to be held early next month in Florida from 8-10th March.

Leading encryption company RSA which has styled itself the most trusted name in e-security has had its web site successfully compromised twice recently, and seems to have changed web server platform on each occasion. On Thursday 10th February www.rsa.com was running Solaris and Netscape-Enterprise, by Sunday 13th it had switched to Linux and Apache/1.3.6, while today [Monday 14th February] it is running NT4 and Microsoft-IIS/4.0. It would be interesting to know the reasons for this; sometimes companies change platforms as a knee jerk reaction to a security or reliability problem, but going through the three most common platforms in four days seems exceptional. Presumably at least one of the attacks was a redirection of the DNS entry for www.rsa.com.

www.apple.com has been running on Solaris and Netscape-Enterprise for several years, but Apple is now introducing MacOS X Server and Apache into the load balancing pool serving the site. At the moment there is a 2:1 ratio of Solaris to MacOS X Server on repeated queries to the site, but presumably Apple's intention will be to ultimately replace the Sun platform with their own.

One frequently asked question is how the www.buy.com site can be running Microsoft-IIS/5.0 on Solaris. This is one of the scenarios outlined in the faq. Buy.com uses a reverse proxy, Inktomi Traffic-Server/2.2 running on Solaris, to reduce the load on the Windows 2000 web servers. and the tcp/ip characteristics that we see are those of the Solaris reverse proxy rather than the web servers sitting behind it.

Tijdens de Macworld Expo in Tokyo is het besturingssysteem Linux PPC 2000 gepresenteerd, dat naast het MacOS op Apple-computers kan worden gedraaid. Hieronder wat info afkomstig van Nu.nl.

Het bijzondere aan de gratis Linux-software is dat het Mac-OS, het besturingssysteem dat meekomt met de Apple-machine, binnen Linux kan draaien, mits beide systemen op een aparte partitie van de harde schijf zijn geïnstalleerd.

Voorts valt deze Linux-versie op door zijn grafische verschijningsvorm. Zelfs het installatieproces (inclusief partitionering) is in een grafische schil gebouwd. Er is een bootable cd-rom gemaakt, zodat Linux niet, zoals tot nu toe gebruikelijk, vanuit het Mac-OS geïnstalleerd hoeft te worden.

Linux PPC 2000 is te gebruiken op een hele reeks Apples: van de Performa 6360 tot de nieuwste iMac en de G4-computers. Het besturingssysteem komt vanaf 28 februari in beperkte oplage op de markt.

Smart Zeiky schrijft: "Meestal zijn regeringen langzaam en lopen ze achter de feiten aan, maar dat blijkt niet altijd zo te zijn. De Zwitserse regering vindt Win2000 namelijk te duur voor hun onderdanen en daar hebben ze natuurlijk helemaal gelijk in! Microsoft reageerde natuurlijk meteen met de mededeling dat hamburgers daar ook duurder zijn:"

Zwitserland zal in eigen land een onderzoek instellen naar de prijzen van Microsoft-software. Volgens diverse klagers is de software die Microsoft verkoopt veel te duur. Volgens de ontevreden Zwitsers zijn alle versies van Windows 98 en Office 97 te hoog geprijsd voor de Zwitserse markt. Ook Windows 2000 zou te duur zijn.

Het onderzoek zal nog enige maanden duren, maar mocht blijken dat de Zwitsers de producten te duur vinden dan zal Microsoft haar prijzen moeten aanpassen.

Volgens Microsoft is het logisch dat producten buiten de VS duurder zijn dan in Amerika. De productiekosten en de distributiekosten liggen hoger, dus zal de prijs ook hoger liggen. In Zurich ligt de prijs van Windows 2000 15% hoger dan in de VS, maar Microsoft wijt dit aan de verschillen in productie en distributiekosten. Microsoft voerde aan dat ook hamburgers en cd's in prijs verschillen. Zo kosten muziekcd's in Amerika gemiddeld 12% minder. Ook heeft Microsoft in Zwitserland producten van een concurrent gevonden die zelfs 40% tot 100% duurder waren. Terwijl de Zwitsers zich buigen over de prijsverschillen van software genereert Microsoft tweemaal zoveel omzet als Zwitserland's totale nationaal product.

3DSpotlight heeft een review van de quad speaker Aureal Vortex 2 SQ2500 geluidskaart neer gemikt. Tot voor kort hadden deze Aureal geluidskaartjes als nadeel dat ze een relatief veel CPU cycles weg aten. Dankzij verbeterde drivers en een nieuwe revisie van de Vortex 2 chipset is de processor belasting van de SQ2500 echter vrijwel nihil:

Will the Aureal Voxtex 2 SQ2500 remain in my system, or will I pop the Sound Blaster Live back in? This is an easy question now. The SQ2500 has proven to be a better gaming and all around card than my SB Live, so it’s the SQ2500 for me.

The new 8830 revision B chip the SQ2500 does cut down on CPU utilization a lot. The 8830 revision B uses, at the most, 2% of the CPU when playing sounds. This is much better than the 6 to 7 percent the first 8830 chip consumed.

Even when I benchmarked with 3Dmark 99 Max, my scores were 100 points higher and 3Dmark 99 doesn’t even play sound when compared to the same system with the SB Live.

Onderzoeksbureau Yankee Group heeft berekend dat de distributed denial of service aanvallen van vorige week hebben geleid tot een totale schade van 1,2 miljard dollar:

GA-Source heeft een review van de Hercules 3D Prophet DDR DVI online gebracht. Het door GA-Source geteste exemplaar bleek verassend op een setting van 130/301MHz geklokt te zijn, hoger dan andere 3D Propheten die in de omloop zijn. De kloksnelheid kon middels het in de Detonator drivers ingebakken overclocking slidertje verder opgekrikt worden tot maar liefst 155/340MHz:

One thing that I was surprised by when I started to look at overclocking this board was the fact that it was default clocked at 130/301. I went and looked around the web a bit and found a couple reviews mentioning the core speed at 125 and a few others mentioned it as being 120. What this means, I don't know. I will of course update the exact specification that Guillemot ships the card at as soon as I hear from them. For the time being I will assume the default is 130/301.

[...] The SGRAM on the board was Infineon rated at 6ns. It was default clocked at 301mhz. Don't let the 6ns rating fool you, the speed of the chip is actually 150mhz times two. (DDR) At 6ns it should be able to hit 333mhz (166mhz *2) with no problems. It was able to do that and then some. The chips would run stable at 340mhz. It would run fine at 345mhz for a few minutes and then anomalies would begin to show up on the screen. The final number we are left with is 155mhz core and 340mhz memory. Not that bad of a jump over the stock speed.

Via Nielsonline kwam ik bij WebWereld terecht waar gemeld wordt dat Superweb na overleg met de Consumentenbond aan 6000 klanten het betaalde abonnementsgeld terug betaalt. Abonnees die nog niet bij Superweb hebben geklaagd worden aangeraden om dit alsnog even schriftelijk te doen.

Het totale bedrag dat Superweb terug zal storten wordt door de Consumentenbond geraamd op 500.000 gulden. "Als alle 15.000 klanten hun geld terugvragen kan dat bedrag oplopen tot 1,5 miljoen", zegt Ewald van Kouwen van de Consumentenbond.

Superweb, de internetaanbieder die tegen 35 gulden per maand internettoegang biedt via een gratis 0800-nummer, wordt sinds de start in oktober met argusogen gevolgd door de Consumentenbond. In januari kondigde de bond een boycot af omdat de ISP na herhaaldelijk aandringen haar beloftes niet nakwam. Die boycot blijft gehandhaafd.

De Consumentenbond ziet geen goede toekomst voor Superweb, ondanks de aanstelling van Henk de Jager als algemeen directeur vorige maand. "Het vertrouwen in Superweb is absoluut niet toegenomen met de aanstelling van de nieuwe directeur", zegt Van Kouwen. "De gesprekken zijn niet constructief verlopen."

De Jager drijft een gebruikersonvriendelijk bedrijf, het gedrag van de afgelopen maanden is daar het bewijs van. "Als iemand de automatische incasso heeft ingetrokken ziet Superweb die persoon meteen niet meer als klant", licht Van Kouwen toe. "Dan zitten wij meteen in de hoogste boom, want het is iemands goed recht om een incasso tegen te houden."

The unknown variable in the equation is the Athlon chipset, AMD's first offering in the market. Keep in mind that AMD didn't enter the chipset market looking to dominate, they entered because they had to. AMD initially expected their partners ALi and VIA to offer chipsets upon the Athlon launch last year.

When it became apparent this wasn't goint to happen, AMD found itself forced to supply the processor and chipset or suffer the immediate consequences.

While our Stepping six 750 chipset peformed well and encountered no problems with the GeForce 256 operating in AGP 2X mode, this isn't the case with earlier steppings of the 750 chipset. Nouja, In iedergeval lijkt het er op dat ze daarwerkelijk met iets komen. Tot dan zul je met een SBLive NT4 driver moeten blijven hannessen om 4 point spreaker instellingen te kunnen gebruiken, en zul je het voor videokaarten met nVidia drivers moeten doen. Webcams echter bijven vooralsnog een behoorlijke No-no :'(

CHICAGO, Feb 14 (Reuters) - Volume stayed strong and implied volatility remained on the high side Monday in options on NVIDIA Corp. as stock of the 3D graphics processor supplier rose further ahead of its earnings.

Implied vols for the March 55s ran at roughly 98 percent late on Monday, up from 92 percent or so late last week, said one options analyst.

On Friday, implied vols for a composite of different strikes and expiries had jumped to roughly 145 percent, up from 123 percent on Thursday, noted Sage Douglas, research assistant with McMillan Analysis Corp.

Options volume also has risen over the last week as the stock has run up as high as $58 on Monday, a new 52-week high, from Feb. 9 close at 40-7/8.

Near Monday's close, volume across the four U.S. options exchange totaled roughly 1,885 calls and 300 puts compared with Friday's turnover of about 2,175 and recent daily average volume of roughly 940 contracts.

Verder natuurlijk weer erg vrolijke praat over de 8 Texel pipelines, de 512-bit brede geheugen bus en het 9GB/s snelle embedded DRAM van de Glaze3D:

SL: With the amount of true available filtrate we have, AA will finally be usable in actual game play. Our fillrate of the G3D 2400 will be over 2 Gigatexels, which will be sufficient to implement 2 and 4 pass AA in resolutions up to 1280x1024x32 and still achieve great frame rates. It is going to be amazing. The real goal of the large fillrate is to be able to implement features like full screen AA, 32-bit color depths, 32-bit Z-buffers, 32-bit textures in all modes at all resolutions and still hold frame rate. The G3D 2400 will have an advantage of over 4 times the texel fillrate of nVIDIA GeForce and around 8 times 3dfx's recently announced VSA-100 chip which is the basis for their upcoming Voodoo 5! These performance advantages sound big, but if you really want to accomplish what we are after, then they are required. Fillrate is king in terms of performance 3D solutions, and our XBA enabled products are going to win this race hands down.

Bij iXBT-Hardware is een errug uitgebreide review online gezet van de Diamond Viper II videokaart met S3's Savage 2000 chip. Zoals al bekend is deze kaart een vrij aardige performer onder Quake III en Unreal Tournament, waarin je ook nog eens kan genieten van de erg gedetailleerde S3TC textures.

Well, let's sum up. Diamond Viper II Z200 graphics card proved an up-to-date graphics accelerator with adequate performance. S3 Savage2000 chipset really appeared a significant dash forward from S3 Savage4. However, that's all it can boast. The performance of NVIDIA GeForce 256 is still better although Savage2000 sometimes showed very close results. However, we have to admit that in the system on AMD Athlon processor Diamond Viper II Z200 performed very well due to 3DNow! instructions support and good work in AGP 2x mode, unlike GeForce 256, which supports only AGP 1x mode.

Nevertheless, Diamond Viper II Z200 graphics card costs somewhat less than the cards on NVIDIA GeForce 256 with SDR memory. Just compare: about $180 for Viper II and about $210 for a card on GeForce 256 with SDR memory. Therefore, Viper II deserves its existence. But! We shouldn't disregard complaints about image quality in 3D, drivers incompleteness and the failure of geometric coprocessor in Direct3D, which prevent Savage2000 from being a hundred percent success. Even super performance in Unreal Tournament cannot be a real threat to its competitors. We think that only a significant price difference between the cards on NVIDIA GeForce 256 and S3 Savage2000 could help the latter to take one of the leading positions in the market. Those users who are currently enjoying graphics cards on Savage2000 can only hope that it will suddenly dawn upon S3 software developers and they will finally manage to write perfect drivers supporting all the announced API and S3TC.

GameFan heeft een review in elkaar gezet van Hitachi's CM769 monitor. Deze 19" bak trekt 85Hz bij een maximale resolutie van 1600 x 1200 en komt geleverd met een handige USB hub. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

This is without a doubt a great monitor, with super-high refresh rates (so you can see those frames and your eyes will still love you), compact design that’s the same size as my ViewSonic 17”, and an optional four-port USB Hub that saves space by nuzzling nicely in the back of the monitor (see picture). It even lets you switch back and forth between two computers without some funky switchbox (the cheap ones are known as adapter destroyers). The features are solid--it’s a complete package. The only consideration’s the price; at around $580 (not including the USB Hub), it’s not just a drop in the bucket for most. Still, the compact design, .22 dot pitch and super-high refresh rates separate this monitor from its 19” brethren; this a high-end product, and it’s priced accordingly. There are bargain-end 19” monitors, and Hitachi’s own CM751 is one of them. But if you spend a lot of time in front of the glass master (monitor) and/or have two computers with limited desk space, you’ll want this monitor for its features and its ease on your eyes (to help prevent long-term damage). Then again, if you have scorn for your optical receptors, or can’t scrounge up the scratch, though, you might want to go with something cheaper…

This security issue was duplicated on multiple Windows 2000 Servers in different configurations. All Windows 2000 servers were running Build 2195, the final release of the Windows 2000 operating system.

If a general administrator uses the "Active Directory Users and Computers" administrative utility to attempt to access information in a hidden organizational unit" that information is not available. This is to be expected.

However, if they select another organizational unit first and select its security tab and then go to the "hidden organizational unit" they can not only see the security settings but can also manage security rights. It appears that simply viewing another object in Active Directory allows access to the blocked object. At this point the general administrator can actually grant other objects rights to this section of the network and then set inherited permissions back on - which effectively allows a method for simple future access and hides the fact that entrance had been gained.

This flaw is not caused by any domain-related groups, such as the built-in "Domains Admins" group because this security hole works even when the "Domains Admins" group is specifically added to the Payroll department with DENY rights.

The Concern

Here is the million dollar question - is this a bug in the "Active Directory Users and Computers" utility, or is this a problem in Active Directory ? At first glance it certainly appears that this is a bug in the administrative utility, since certain steps taken in the administrative utility suddenly bypass security. However, if this is true, this is VERY DANGEROUS, as it means that it is the utility that enforces security, rather than the directory itself. If decisions about Active Directory security are a function of the client-side utility or application and are not necessarily enforced at the back-end Active Directory server any malicious programmer could user the same access to create a client-side utility that did not enforce security and thus bypass Active Directory security.

Alternatively, if the flaw exists in the directory itself it demonstrates the lack of security architecture necessary to provide an enterprise-ready directory.

Rond maart 2000 start KPN Telecom in een beperkt aantal plaatsen met het aanbod van ADSL in combinatie met PSTN (een analoge telefoonaansluiting). Inmiddels heeft KPN Telecom bekend gemaakt dat het kort daarna, vanaf de zomer van 2000, ADSL ook direct in combinatie met ISDN aan gaat bieden. ISDN-gebruikers hoeven dus niet terug naar een analoge aansluiting om van de voordelen van ADSL te kunnen genieten. Tegelijkertijd kunnen zij alle voordelen van ISDN blijven benutten, zoals 2 kanalen voor spraak of data, tot 8 verschillende nummers en Nummerweergave.
