Micron heeft samples van 128MB PC1600 en PC2100 DDR modules aangekondigd. De DIMMs functioneren op een voltage van 2,5V met een datarate van 200 en 266MHz. De theoretische bandwidth bedraagt respectievelijk 1,6 en 2,1GByte/sec:

The 128 Meg DDR SDRAM will also be available in 8 Meg x 16 and 4 Meg x 32 configurations for use in graphics, networking and telecommunications applications. The 128 Meg DDR SDRAM also provides an upgrade path to the 256 Meg DDR SDRAM, which Micron plans to introduce in the same package and pin-out later this year. ``The introduction of this new generation reaffirms Micron's commitment to DDR SDRAM,'' said Jeff Mailloux, Micron's Director of DRAM Marketing. ``With its low latency and high bandwidth, DDR is a leading memory solution for multiple applications. Samples of 32 Meg x 4 (MT46V32M4TG) and 16 Meg x 8 (MT46V16M8TG) DDR SDRAM components are currently available. Pricing of DDR SDRAMs are comparable to SDRAMs. Samples of PC1600 and PC2100 128MB registered DDR SDRAM DIMM modules (MT9VDDT1672G) and 256MB registered DDR SDRAM DIMM modules (MT9VDDT1672G) are also available. If you are into driving games as much as I am, this is THE gaming item to have. With fully user adjustable forces you can actually feel, like engine idle, ice, gravel, rollovers, skids, etc. you just can't get this kind of excitement anywhere else. Well unless of course you have diplomatic immunity and running over small children and other objects won't get you the death penalty, only deported.

Down to the dirty stuff, installing this bad boy setup took an entire 8-10 minutes. Plug in the power pack, place the pedal assembly comfortably under the desk, slap the wheel on top and attatch all cables, some software install and bammo...you are ready to race! One thing I would recommend is to attatch all the cables BEFORE latching down the wheel. Otherwise, the connections are angled so it is next to impossible to get them in without the possibility of totally jacking up the new gear. The Sidewinder software gives you an option of retaining various settings for different games. I thought that was kind of neat, although somewhat unnecessary. It may be a great tool for those of you who are totally into each driving game.

Hitachi kan rekenen op de steun van zijn SDRAM makkers in de rechtszaak die het 2 week geleden door Rambus Inc. aan het broekje gelapt kreeg. Rambus verdenkt Hitachi van het schenden van enkele patenten die betrekking hebben op alle SDRAM produkten van Hitachi, waaronder ook de SH-4 processor die in de Dreamcast wordt gebruikt. Dit klinkt nogal onzinnig en volgens de DRAM fabrikanten is dat ook zo: SDRAM maakt volgens hen gebruik van technologie die al bestond lang voordat Rambus zijn patenten vastlegde:

Following a patent-infringement suit filed earlier this month against Hitachi Ltd. by IP-house Rambus Inc., several memory-chip makers have begun to rally behind the scenes in support of their fellow vendor.

Citing Hitachi's refusal to negotiate a separate license, Rambus is seeking punitive damages and an injunction against virtually all of Hitachi's DRAM products as well as its SDRAM-enabled SH microprocessors.

But it's Rambus' claim that the entire DRAM industry is subject to the same restrictions that has stood the market on its ear. Sherry Garber, an analyst at Phoenix-based Semico Research Corp., said major DRAM companies have quietly offered their help to Hitachi-specifically by sharing data that purportedly proves the synchronous technology was developed long before Rambus filed its patent claims in 1990.

“All the memory firms see the Rambus suit against Hitachi as a threat to them,” Garber said. “They want to stop the Rambus patent action before it goes any further.”

The Asus K7M continues Asus's tradition of making stable high quality motherboards. It's by far the best Athlon overclockable motherboard on the market. The K7M comes in two models, one with on board sound and one without. Normally I hate on board sound because the manufacturer puts in some cheap Sound Blaster 16 chip. However the Yamaha XG chip that the K7M comes with sounded damn sweet! It was every bit as good as the sound produced by the Diamond Monster Sound MX300. The only thing missing from the XG is A3D so if you want true 3D sound, you'll still have to get an A3D card. This motherboard comes with all the features one can ask for. A ton of FSB settings, ATA/66 support, 5 PCI slots, support for up to 768 Megs of RAM, XG sound and super stable at overclocked speeds.

The menu in the BIOS lets you overclock your CPU by letting you manipulate the bus speed, there are 16 settings in all from 66Mhz to 153Mhz. We slapped in a PIII 550, to see just exactly how far we could go reliably. The fastest we could get out of it was 616Mhz, using a 112Mhz bus speed with PC100 SDRAM. This isn't necessarily a flaw of the board, as we have heard reports of people getting theirs to a higher bus speed, it could be that we have a PIII chip that just doesn't like to be overclocked. We do know for a fact that this board is designed from the ground up to be overclocked, as it even includes 2200uf Capacitors for increased stability. Also included are power plugs on the board for case fans, and the CPU fan, all these plugs are fully monitored to keep you in touch incase a fan fails. If you do get this board and happed to overclock it the point where it won't come on, you can hold down the home key on your keyboard to override it into the default settings.

Looking at the board you'll see 6 (count em') PCI slots, 3 DIMM's and a UDMA/33 controller. Installation was rather painless since the board has a very clean layout. The only thing that made us scratch our heads was why the decided to have the socket to plug in your floppy drive all the way on the backside of the board, just above the AGP slot. We're sure that this is because now it's super close to the floppy controller chip, however, unless you run your floppy cable behind the motherboard, this could become quite an airflow problem, and could potentially prove troublesome for those who might be upgrading and have a short cable coming from their drive.

I booted into Windows at 550 MHz at 2.3v easily and it was stable after a couple of minutes of use. This Alpha was designed to keep the CPU cool so that's what I'm going for in the testing criteria, keeping the processor cool. In the world of computer cooling, there is a big difference between 1 degree C and 2 degrees C worth of extra cooling. 5 degrees can determine if you're cruising at 605 MHz or 550. The Alpha kept my CPU cool at 44 degrees C compared to the $30 generic heatsink and 12mm fan I bought at Fry's which wouldn't even cool it enough to boot at 550. The Alpha made a noticeable difference in overclockability because it kept the CPU cool at such a high increase in speed. After running some normal apps and timedemos in Quake3, I opened the computer and saw that there was not a rush of heat trying to get out but only a warm breeze. I touched the heatsink and to my amazement, it was still only warm.

Without a second thought, I'm going to keep this sucker in my system. There is no way anyone is going to pry it out of my hands. The 3DfxCOOL Alpha7HO-FAN is a good heatsink/fan combo for a good price. It outperforms almost every other heatsink available in the market today. Overall, this product is the best non-extreme cooling method I've ever used and it's capability to move the amount of heat it does is impressive. The only problem I have with the Alpha is not in the Alpha itself but the fan, if the fan was a bit quieter, then the Alpha7HO-FAN would have gotten a perfect score.

You'll be able to do some very nice home video editing with this card. With the Asus V6600 deluxe, 15 fps at full screen resolution was easily attainable without any SCSI or UDMA 66 drives. With the V6800, I was able to get a whopping 27+ FPS at 720x480 full screen capture. This speaks to the power of the card itself, plus the addition to the initial capture drivers of pre-allocating hard drive space to video capture.

Verder is er een SVHS en composite video uitgang en worden er 3D shutterglasses mee geleverd. Deze 3D bril is volgens Riva3D sterk verbeterd ten opzichte van het oude model dat met de V3800 Deluxe werd verkocht.

Volgens The Register kunnen we in maart de eerste Cyrix Joshua processor in de winkels verwachten. De Joshua is een gefacelifte 6x86 met 256Kb L2 on-die cache, verbeterde floating point unit en support voor zowel 66, 100 als 133MHz FSB.

Sources not a million miles away from the capital of Taiwan have told The Register that production quality .18 micron silicon for Via's Joshua microprocessor arrived at the end of last week.

The Joshua processor is likely to be officially rolled out with a product line in early March, according to the same sources.

The silicon is manufactured in National Semiconductor's South Portland fabrication plant, and the first units to ship will be PR-533 parts, the same sources said.

Computable bericht dat de Europese Comissie met een voorstel komt om een nieuw .eu top level domein in te voeren. De Europese Unie hoopt hiermee duidelijk te maken dat het betrokken is bij het internet en e-commerce gebeuren:

Analisten zien hierin een bevestiging van de Europese vrees dat de Europese Unie (EU) het aflegt tegen de Verenigde Staten (VS) in de race om het uitbuiten van Internet en elektronische handel. De schepping van de .eu-extensie dient die angst tegen te gaan én duidelijk te maken dat de Europese politiek betrokken is bij de gang naar Internet.

Anand heeft een leuk artikel het leven in geroepen over de performance van Intel's i820 chipset in combinatie met SDRAM geheugen. Zoals inmiddels bekend heeft het gebruik van de Memory Translator Hub, waardoor ipv RDRAM SDRAM gebruikt kan worden, dramatische gevolgen voor de performance. Anand kwam dan ook tot de conclusie dat de i820 / SDRAM combo totaal niet interessant is, voor 133MHz FSB kun je dan ook beter voor de VIA Apollo Pro 133A kiezen.

The idea of putting SDRAM on an i820 motherboard is definitely a good one and a very practical one, at least in theory. But in practice, through the use of Intel's Memory Translator Hub, it is far from the most efficient idea. Unfortunately there is really no way around this other than to go after a motherboard that uses either the BX, the Apollo Pro 133 or 133A chipset.

As a complement to an overclocked FC-PGA CPU, an i820 motherboard with SDRAM does become an interesting option but when you consider that a 500E running at 750MHz (150MHz FSB) on an i820 with SDRAM is slower than the same CPU running at a lower clock speed of 620MHz (124MHz FSB) on a BX board it really makes you want to reconsider throwing out your trusty BX motherboard.

We've said it before and we'll say it again, the BX platform is still the most attractive platform in terms of stability and performance for the newer Pentium IIIs based on the Coppermine core. Even with SDRAM the i820 loses its appeal because of the heavy performance penalties associated with using a MTH in order to gain SDRAM support.

If you must have official 133MHz FSB support, the VIA Apollo Pro 133A is a much better and much more affordable chipset option than the i820 + SDRAM. Unfortunately we are still waiting for the kinks to be worked out of most of the current Apollo Pro 133A based motherboards as well as for others to finally hit the streets.

If there only were a better 133MHz FSB chipset on the horizon...

My final judgment on the Erazor X² is that it's an average DDR GeForce board at a high price. Unless the ELSA board is the only thing available in your area, I see no reason why you shouldn't go with the Leadtek or Absolute Multimedia solutions. My favorite GeForce DDR is still that Leadtek WinFast 256 DDR that offers a solid board, good software bundle, and is widely available all at a low price. You can't go wrong with any of the DDR solutions but why spend the extra $20?

I was only able to get this card up to 140/355 with no artefacts yet the clock/memory speed would go to 160/370 without crashing, but I don't think anyone would play Quake 3 while its snowing on their monitor. This was with the default Heatsink and Fan, and the board did get very hot but nothing out of the norm for this chip. The overclocking also did not translate very well with the benchmarks giving me a measly 5 % maximum increase in FPS. I didn't think it was worth the trouble.

BXBoards brengt ons een review van de Tennmax Lasagna BGA Cooler, een compacte koeler die onder meer ingezet kan worden bij het koud krijgen van een GeForce. Zoals we vaker hebben gelezen blijkt extra videokaart cooling nauwelijks resultaat op te leveren:

At this time I’d have to say that if you’re really not wanting, or needing, either of these (GeForce or the TennMax) items, I’d really wait until the next generation of NVIDIA's chips come out. They will probably be a little easier to cool. At the current time, the amount of transistors and such on the NV10 produces too much heat to make it an easy card to overclock. Even though Nvidia’s cards in the past have been great for overclocking, this one just packs too much of a punch on it’s chip to cool down when trying to crank it up. As with most first generation tech, it’s usually better to wait for the next generation to come out, because by then it’s refined and ready to rock.

I’d have to say that about the same goes for the cooler. The Lasagna BGA is a great product and has a vast range of applications. You can use it to cool just about any chipset out there, either video or motherboard logic, and if you really think about it, you could probably come up with other uses for it. But at this time I’d have to say that unless you have money to burn, I’d stick with the factory HSF.

Normal operating temperature on top of my GeForce at the 140MHz core clock in 2D mode is 90° F when the CardCooler is operating. I unplugged the fans and closed the case. Within FOUR minutes, It was 108° F on the back of the card. 3D mode locked almost instantly.

Plugging the cooler back in quickly dropped the temperature back to 90° F (about five minutes). What this exemplifies most about the CardCooler is just how much air circulation it creates within your case. The normal operating hotspots are eliminated as a side-effect of super-cooling the AGP video card.
