Goed nieuws voor de mensen met een domein bij Freehosting.nl. Freehosting is namelijk overgenomen door LaDot. Klanten van Freehosting kunnen binnenkort ook een uitbreiding van het pakket van producten en diensten verwachten. Voor de geïnteresseerden zal er op dinsdag 6 februari om 11:00 uur een persbijeenkomst gehouden worden op het kantoor van Freehosting op de Valkweg 1 te Schiphol. Volgens ZDNet is Microsoft bezig met het beschikbaar stellen van de Windows-broncode aan enkele honderden grote klanten. In tegenstelling tot een artikel wat wij in mei vorig jaar postten, waarin verteld werd dat alle softwareontwikkelaars gebruik konden maken van de source en deze mochten veranderen, is de beschikbaarstelling van de bron aan strikte voorwaarden gebonden:

Microsoft has licensed elements of the Windows source code to less than 100 software and hardware developers working closely with Microsoft on evolving the operating system, according to estimates by sources close to Microsoft. Ik lees bij X-Bit Labs dat Intel in juli de integrated i810 chipset zal vervangen door de i815G en i815EG. Beide versies zijn gebaseerd op de i815 chipset, echter zonder ondersteuning voor een extern AGP-slot. Wel bieden de i815G / i815EG support voor PC133 SDRAM en zijn ze geschikt voor de Tualatin Pentium III processor. De i815EG heeft als voordeel t.o.v. de i815G dat hij een ICH2 southbridge meekrijgt, en dus geschikt is voor ATA-100.

In July, Intel is going to introduce a couple of new sets of core logic: i815G and i815EG destined to replace i810. New chipsets from i8150G/EG family will be based on B-step of i815 chipset, which doesn’t support the external AGP port. So, unlike i810, i815G/EG chipsets will support new Tualatin based processors and PC133 SDRAM, which increases the performance of the graphics subsystem using UMA architecture. I815G will feature an ICH for the South Bridge and hence will support only ATA/66, while i815EG will be equipped with ICH2 supporting ATA/100.

Of course, the launching of i815G/EG, which shouldn’t be more expensive than i810E2 will automatically result into discontinuing of the i810 chipset. So, the entire Intel chipset family will be completely unified. Intel will target all sorts of i815 chipset versions (including those without the integrated graphics – i815EP, and those without the support for external AGP – i815EG) for almost all the market sectors except servers and workstations.

Bij Dan's Data is een review verschenen over een nieuwe Lian Li kast, de PC-70. Deze kast is evenals zijn kleine broertje volledig van aluminium gemaakt, en is dus in kilogrammen lekker licht en in dollars erg zwaar. De kast heeft met vijf externe 5.25” bays, drie externe 3,5” bays en zes interne 3,5” bays zeker niet te weinig ruimte voor je apparatuur. Op het gebied van koeling is de kast ook niet mis, met standaard vier 80mm fans kan waarvan er twee om verschillende snelheden gezet kunnen worden kan je de kast flink koelen. En als dat nog niet genoeg voor je is, is er nog ruimte voor drie 40mm fans naast je insteekkaarten en twee 80mm boven de voeding. Volgens de reviewer een erg leuke kast als je veel geld hebt :

The PC-70 costs more than twice as much as various decent full tower cases - which come with 300 watt power supplies, which are $AUD100 items by themselves. Heck, put a PSU in this thing and you're paying more for it than you'll currently pay for a 1.1GHz Athlon.

But never mind the price. Feel the quality.

If you're going to spend a few thousand bucks on your super-PC, or invest many hours of your time in customising it, or if you're seriously considering buying a swish-looking brand name computer to go in your featured-in-interior-design-magazines office, then paying big bucks for a case that's not only sharp looking but also very nicely made is not nutty.

't Is winter en de sneeuw dwarrelt naar beneden. Een goed moment dus om eens een blik te werpen op een 'winterse' review, dit maal ééntje van de hand van de jongens (en misschien ook wel meisjes) bij Frostytech, waarin men de CoolerMaster CH5-5K12 CPU-koeler behandelt. Wellicht wordt de naam CoolerMaster door velen geassocieerd met relatief goedkope koelertjes die het hart van de echte tweaker niet echt sneller doen kloppen, maar dit exemplaar is wel degelijk interessant, óók voor de die-hard tweaker!

De specs leren ons al direct dat 't hier niet om een 'el cheapo' koelertje gaat: de basis is een 3mm dikke koperplaat, waarop twee U-vormige koperen 'heatpipes' gemonteerd zijn die de processorwarmte vervolgens aan 24 aluminium koelvinnen afgeven. De koelvinnen worden vervolgens actief gekoeld door een 50x50mm fan, niet van bovenaf, maar van de zijkant, en da's ook niet standaard!

Over de twee 'heatpipes' is nog wel het één en ander te melden. Ze zijn namelijk niet van massief koper, maar het zijn afgesloten koperen buisjes die gevuld zijn met een kleine hoeveelheid koelvloeistof. Deze vloeistof verdampt daar waar 't warm is (nabij de processor dus), en condenseert weer daar waar 't koud is (bij de koelvinnen natuurlijk), zakt naar beneden, verdampt weer, enzovoorts. Op deze manier wordt het koelproces op gang gehouden.

De test levert dan ook een behoorlijk resultaat op: het beestje levert beduidend betere prestaties dan een standaardkoelertje (uiteraard, daar is 'ie tenslotte ook voor gemaakt), en gemiddelde resultaten als hij wordt vergeleken met een high-end koeler.

Kritiekpuntje is overigens de clip: het aanbrengen van de koeler is geen makkelijk klusje, maar da's iets wat wel meer voorkomt met de wat 'betere' koelers, dus niet echt specifiek iets voor dit model.

Men beoordeelt de koeler aan de hand van percentages, waarbij 'ie een score van 84% voor z'n performance krijgt toebedeeld, tegen 100% voor z'n innovativiteit. Opvallen doet-ie in ieder geval, koelen ook, maar of het nu de allerbeste koeler op de markt is... Hier nog een paar koele quotes uit de conclusie van de reviewer:

With its' dual heatpiped, half-copper, half-aluminum frame the Coolermaster CH5-5K12 just looks.... cool! If you're an avid overclocker or someone just assembling the most high-tech computer you can, then this heatsink is definitely worth considering. While the clip is a bit stiff and has some peculiarities when attaching, it will hold that heatsink very, very, securely in place.

All in all the CH5-5K12 is a great heatsink using some cool techniques to provide significantly better performance then the average OEM heatsink, and average cooling when compared to a highend heatsink. Plus the best part is you also get bragging.

Rivastation heeft een 17 pagina's lange shootout online gezet van drie GeForce2 Ultra videokaarten, te weten de Elsa Gladiac Ultra, Leadtek’s WinFast GeForce2 Ultra en de V7700 Ultra van Asus. Alledrie de kaarten zijn opgebouwd conform nVidia's reference design, wat betekent dat er onderling geen grote verschillen zijn; GPU en geheugen lopen op alle kaarten met dezelfde kloksnelheden. De verschillen die er zijn zitten hem in de extra's, zoals een TV-uitgang. Verder verschillen de software bundles en ook de meegeleverde drivers. Zo levert Elsa de drivers in versie 5.30, Leadtek levert 6.27 en Asus levert versie 6.31-bêta5 mee! Nóg een verschil is terug te vinden in de prijs, hoe kan het ook anders. De Leadtek is met DM 1250,- de goedkoopste, de Asus 'doet' DM 1350,- en de Elsa mag voor maar liefst DM 1650,- over de toonbank. Forse verschillen dus voor - in principe - gelijkwaardige kaarten.

De drie deelnemers worden allemaal uitgebreid voorgesteld en besproken, voordat er getest wordt. Ze hebben allemaal hun pro's en contra's, maar de reviewer is met name niet echt te spreken over de benchmarks. De meerprijs van deze kaarten blijkt in zijn opinie niet gerechtvaardigd zodra je naar de geleverde prestaties kijkt. Al met al brengt dat de reviewer tot de volgende conclusie:

Truth be told, I’m very disappointed with these bundles! Ultra=Ultra-expensive and Ultra-minimalistic?! In the end, the winner isn’t necessarily the card with the best performance but rather the one with the fewest weaknesses. And at a price point well above DM 1000 (500$), shouldn’t you be able to expect a card with NO weaknesses? ELSA takes this to the extreme – although the GLADIAC is the most expensive of the three cards, ELSA includes way outdated drivers - you can only call that a real embarassment . And while Leadtek wins first prize for best looks, it is this very "jewelry" that is its main problem: the heatsinks act more like heat accumulators. On top of that the card was troubled by the infamous "rolling lines" and the limited TV-Out functionality. That leaves us with the ASUS V7700, a card that has no flaws worth mentioning, but is also the most "simple" of the bunch, feature-wise.

In the end you’ll make a better deal if you buy a GeForce 2 PRO instead of an Ultra. They’re much cheaper and can effortlessly be overclocked to an Ultra’s level, if that’s what you’re looking for. The Ultra’s higher chip speed doesn’t make much of a difference, one way or another, as the benchmarks bear out. What counts today is the memory speed, and so far, every PRO I have had the privilege to test has been able to hit the 460MHz that the stock Ultras run at. The other point is that you canŽt get an Ultra higher than 500MHz at all. Most people wouldn’t notice the difference between the two anyway. And if these two versions of the GF2 are too expensive for you or you own a CPU that’s slower than 700MHz you should stick with the GTS anyway. In most cases it will easily be fast enough.

Recommendations (independent of ratings):

1. ASUS V7700 AGP - (92%)
With the V7700, ASUS delivers a solid product without any weaknesses worth mentioning.

2. ELSA GLADIAC Ultra - (91%)
Basically the GLADIAC is a superb card, but the old drivers pretty much disqualify it. [...] Using the v5.30 drivers, the GLADIAC even drops down to the PRO’s performance level in some cases, not to mention that driver incompatabilities cause crashes with some newer games.

3. Leadtek WinFast GeForce 2 Ultra - (93%)
Without a doubt the best looking card in the test, but with some kinks that need to be worked out. [...] As far as performance goes, this card is the definite winner, thanks in part to the activated side-band adressing. If it weren’t for the rolling lines, this card would be a real winner.

Al met al dus geen 'vrolijke' review, voornamelijk omdat de prijs/kwaliteits-verhouding bij deze kaarten nogal scheef ligt. En laten we eerlijk zijn: wie een dergelijk bedrag uitgeeft verwacht toch op z'n minst up-to-date drivers in z'n doosje, al zijn ze natuurlijk nog zo makkelijk te downloaden. Stunter attendeerde ons op een review van de Enermax EG451P-VE 431Watt power-supply. Voor wie een 'normale' (laten we zeggen 300W) voeding niet meer voldoet is Enermax één van de weinige leveranciers die betaalbare alternatieven biedt, zoals deze voeding dus, maar er zijn ook nog 330W en 550W versies.

Een opvallend feature van deze voeding is dat er niet alleen een 80mm fan op de achterzijde is aangebracht, maar ook een 92mm intake-fan aan de onderzijde van de voeding. Deze slobbert de warme lucht uit de computer, en kan volgens de reviewers in z'n ééntje al een daling van de kasttemperatuur van 5 à 6 graden tot stand brengen.

Daarnaast biedt deze voeding nog meer voordelen, zoals prettig lange kabels waarmee je ook schijven kunt bereiken die in de uithoeken van je kast resideren. Tevens is de ATX-voedingskabel 'ingepakt', en dat is altijd lekker, niet omdat het opgeruimd staat, maar ook omdat de kabelboom op die manier de airflow in je kast minder verstoort natuurlijk.

Eén minpunt wist men toch te vinden: de netspanningskabels (twéé stuks standaard) bleken conform Amerikaanse maten te zijn - het is maar te hopen dat hier ten lande wèl de juiste kabels worden meegeleverd. Verder niets dan positiefs:

It is one of the best-looking PSU’s I have ever seen. Not only does it include a chrome grill on the exhaust fan at the rear, it also has one of the SECOND intake fan at the bottom of the unit. Yep, you heard me right, Enermax PSU’s come with 2 fans, one 92mm intake fan and one 80mm exhaust fan.

[...] Another thing I liked about the EG451P-VE is the cables, not only are there double the amount that comes with most PSU’s, but the ATX connector is also wrapped in a very cool looking black sheath. This both helps to keep the extra long cables organized, as well as just make it look even cooler

[...] And I’m happy to say that I have been running the EG451P-VE for almost a month now, and have yet to have ANY problems with it. I’ve also noticed about a 5-degree drop in system temps, which proves that the second fan does indeed help.

[...] In my opinion this is one of the best power supplies you can get. Priced at $99 it’s a little more expensive then other PSU’s, but still reasonable. You have to keep in mind also that this is the 431-watt version. A 330-watt version is available for around $50, and if you want to spend even more you can get a 550-watt version for about $150.

The Register schrijft dat Infineon de aanklacht, patentbreuk door Rambus, tegen Rambus heeft ingetrokken. Dit waarschijnlijk omdat het onwaarschijnlijk was dat Infineon de rechtzaak ging winnen. Vrienden zijn de twee echter nog niet, 13 maart zal het Infineon zijn die voor de rechter moet verschijnen:

So, the German semiconductor operation yesterday withdrew its allegations that Rambus' RDRAM violates its patents. That claim was made in direct response to allegations made by Rambus against Infineon that the latter's SDRAM products rip off Rambus intellectual property, assertions Infineon denied.

Rambus lawyers have argued that the RDRAM clash has no bearing on the SDRAM case, and Infineon's decision to drop its action suggests it had decided that that argument was likely to win the day.
