De mensen van 3D Spotlight hebben een review van de Diamond Rio 500 geproduceerd. Dit is met grote afstand de bekendste MP3-speler op de markt, om de simpele reden dat hij op de meeste plaatsen verkocht wordt. De Rio 600, die een wat gelikter design heeft, is ook al te koop, maar veel mensen kopen nog steeds de 500 vanwege zijn grotere geheugen (64MB). Zoals al eerder in veel reviews te lezen was is het meegeleverde hoofdtelefoontje niet echt van hoge kwaliteit. Ook nu wordt er weer flink gescholden op het ding:

On the bad side of the Rio 500, we have the horrible Koss headphones that come bundled with it, although sound quality wasn’t bad and they were comfortable, they lacked some bass output, the foam that covers them used to drop easily after 3 days of using the player. Last but not least, the power of the output was very low; if you were on a noisy place it’d be improbable that you will be able to listen more comfortably with this headphones that Diamond supplied, making the Rio look underpowered, when that’s not the case at all. If you are specifically looking for a MP3 player, I'd really recommend the Rio, in fact it might be the best MP3 player I’ve tested to date. Sound quality was on par with the other players I’ve had on hands, from what I've seen before quality of the output depends a lot on the headphones you use, the Rio included a very basic but functional equalizer that made it even better.

Bij The Techzone kunnen we vandaag een review vinden over de AOpen HX08 kast. Deze kast is al een redelijke tijd op de markt en wordt zo ongeveer bij elke computerboer verkocht als de standaard Big Tower. De kast heeft met vijf 5,25" bays en acht 3,5" bays genoeg uitbreidingsruimte en zit voor de rest prima en stevig in elkaar. De reviewer weet dit allemaal wel te waarderen en weet als negatieve punten alleen de aanwezigheid van stapels schroeven en het ontbreken van drive rails op te noemen (niet echt een enorm probleem):

Well, despite a few missing features I have come to love, namely screwless case design, and drive rails, I am quite pleased with this cases design. This is clearly not your average case, so a few feature tradeoffs I'm used to, for the MASSIVE amounts of room this case affords, and incredible strength of the chassis seem to be well worth it. It would have been nice of AOpen to add some case fans to the 3 80mm spots in the case, but with this case hovering around $90-$100 in price, you wont break the budget buying a few case fans to add in to it. Certainly for those of you who need this type of space, and have a desk this mutha will fit under, the AOpen HX08 Tower is a bargain.

Pros:

• ROOM! If you need more than 13 drive bays, you need therapy.
• A removable board tray that isn't flimsy as crap.
• Solid, Athlon approved 300w power supply standard.
• Rigid, "cut-free" construction.
• Value. For this kind of space, and this kind of build quality, it's an excellent value.

Cons:

• Not a screwless design. A nitpick perhaps, but I'm spoiled.
• No drive mounting rails. Another nitpick perhaps. Ditto.

Gisteren stond DPC met 2.260.410 blokjes nét 1 miljoen blokjes boven Team AnandTech. Mooi, maar nog niet goed genoeg. Ook de 2,5 miljoen moet elke dag te halen zijn. Dus, probeer allemaal nog een pc'tje aan je kudde toe te voegen, maar wat misschien nog wel belangrijker is: iedereen die nog niet meedoet moet bekeerd worden tot DPC!

Hier is wat info te vinden over waarom je vooral DPC moet joinen, en ook hoe dat in zijn werk gaat staat er precies beschreven. Weet nu nog maar eens een argument te vinden waarom je nog niet meedoet!

Bij de Financial Times kunnen we lezen dat een groep onderzoekers in de UK bijna klaar is met de ontwikkeling van een plastic microchip. Hoe ze precies een chip van plastic willen bouwen willen de onderzoekers uiteraard niet vertellen, maar volgens de Financial Times zouden er een aantal technieken gerelateerd aan inkt-jet printen geleend zijn. Het voordeel van plastic chips zal vooral het prijsverschil moeten zijn en daarom is de verwachting dat we ze in de toekomst overal tegen zullen komen. De eerste prototypes moeten als alles goed gaat in de zomer van volgend jaar gedemonstreerd worden:

Scientists at Cambridge University in the UK have come up with the technology and funding to make ultra-cheap microchips from plastic, hastening the day when even humble daily items can be made "intelligent".

Plastic Logic, the company intending to commercialise the technology, was put together by Amadeus Capital Partners, a UK-based venture capital group run by Hermann Hauser, the Cambridge entrepreneur.

[...] Plastic Logic hopes to demonstrate prototypes by next summer, which could lead to a host of applications for semiconductor devices.

These could include labels for supermarket goods that would radio their price to scanners without being removed from the shopping basket.

Mr Hauser said plastic microchips could lead to a "revolution" in the semiconductor industry.

De informatieportal van Libertel, Vizzavi, strooit met de persoonsgegevens van andere gebruikers. Als gebruikers onder hun eigen naam inloggen krijgen ze soms willekeurig de gegevens van een andere gebruiker op het scherm te zien. Deze gegevens kunnen zonder problemen veranderd of verwijderd worden:

Dit lek in de database van Vizzavi werd gemeld door een lezer van WebWereld. "Bij het opvragen van mijn persoonlijke gegevens, kreeg ik bij diverse keren inloggen, de gegevens van andere mensen op het scherm. Ik heb die personen èn Vizzavi op de hoogte gesteld. Vizzavi heeft nog niet gereageerd. Een kwalijke zaak. Ik kan nog steeds niet bij mijn eigen instellingen", reageert Jan Willem Lubberhuizen.

De wachtwoorden van de gebruikers waren makkelijk te achterhalen door de broncode van de "persoonlijke" pagina te bekijken.

Volume meldt dat er waarschijnlijk een einde komt aan de lage geheugenprijzen. "De eerste signalen waren er al op de HCC (ik dacht eerst dat hetverkooppraatjes waren) maar blijkbaar is de daling van de geheugenprijzen tot een einde gekomen." Ace's Hardware heeft de SiS730 chipset voor Socket A processors eens goed bekeken. De naam 'chipset' is echter geen goede omschrijving van de SiS730, om de kosten zo laag mogelijk te houden zijn namelijk alle functies die normaalgesproken door de North- en Southbridge samen gedaan worden op één enkel stukje silicium geperst, met als extra's ook nog eens video, audio, modem en 10/100Mbit LAN. De performance van de chip was zeker niet slecht te noemen, op DVD gebied zelfs beter dan VIA's KT133. Als je niet van plan bent om te gaan gamen of bereid bent om een losse videokaart erbij te kopen is dit zeker een interessante optie:

The SiS730 chipset provides an excellent price/performance ratio for all "non-game" applications. You can play games if you restrict yourself to 640x480 resolutions and 16 bit color depths. Nevertheless, the SiS730 may be the best product ever from SiS. Our SiS730 board had no problems at all with any benchmark that we ran, and proved itself to be exceptionally stable. Even when the Duron was overclocked to 744 MHz, we did not encounter any problems and Powerstrip clearly indicated that the system was running at AGP4x. If standalone AGP video cards work fine with the SiS730, overclockres with tight budgets may find a very inexpensive upgrade path with the Duron and a SiS730-based motherboard. The fact that the SiS730 also provides excellent DVD playback should make it a more attractive solution and budget friendly solution as well.

Matthew Witheiler van AnandTech heeft eens aandacht besteed aan de budget videokaarten die momenteel op de markt zijn. In dit verhaal behandelt hij uitgebreid de specificaties van de 3dfx Voodoo4 4500, nVidia's GeForce2 MX en de ATi Radeon SDR. Daarnaast is het trio uiteraard gebenchmarked en zijn ze getest op Windows 2000 performance. Uit de conclusie wordt duidelijk dat de 3dfx Voodoo4 4500 vermeden moet worden; zijn performance ligt gewoon beduidend lager. De Radeon SDR en de GeForce2 MX zijn gelukkig meer aan elkaar gewaagd. Toch laat de ATi kaart het afweten op 16-bit en T&L performance, en de driver support is ook wat onder de maat. Tsja, dan blijft er dus maar eentje over :

So, with some consideration, we can pick a GeForce2 MX based card as the budget card of choice. Not only does the card shine in T&L intensive games, but it also has strong performance in all the benchmarks. In addition, many GeForce2 MX cards are currently on the market for around $100 or even a bit less. And for a bit more money you can get an MX based card with both a heatsink and a fan, making overclocking a cinch. Dual VGA TwinView ready GeForce2 MX based cards are still rather hard to find and may end up costing up to $150, but for many users in a business type environment it may be worth it.

It won't be long before the current generation of high performance video processors become the processor of choice for the gamer on a budget. With GeForce2 GTS prices falling nearly daily, it will not be long before the GeForce2 MX based cards are priced even lower. Do not expect, however, for the GeForce2 MX to remain the budget card of choice for too long. With in a few months we should see new product announcements from both NVIDIA as well as ATI. Without question, a modified version of these new processors will soon find their way into new budget video cards, making the cycle start all over once again.

Bij AnandTech staat een artikel online waarin je de belangrijkste info kunt vinden over de moederborden & chipsets van het komende jaar. Het eerste deel richt zich vooral op de nieuwe plankjes van Abit, AOpen, FIC Chaintech en Epox. Al deze fabrikanten zullen in de nabije toekomst DDR moederborden uitbrengen gebruikmakend van AMD 760, VIA Apollo Pro266 of ALi MAGiK 1 chipsets. Daarnaast zullen we ook nog veel nieuwe SDR moederplanken tegenkomen met de KT133A, VIA ProSavage PM133 en KM133 chipset. Hieronder heb je vast een kleine greep uit de info:

Abit KG20 (AMD-760)

This is the KG-20, a micro-ATX board using the AMD 760 chipset. An ATX version is in the works, so you’ll have to wait a little bit longer if you want a standard ATX DDR solution from ABIT. In fact, this board is the only DDR solution ABIT showed us, but they do plan to have other DDR motherboards using VIA’s DDR chipsets.

AOpen AX4T (i850)

The above pictures are of the AX4T, supporting Pentium 4 processors of up to 1.5GHz, 512MB of RDRAM, and on-board audio and LAN. Notice the four big silver “circles,”two on each side, around the CPU socket. That’s where the Pentium 4’s retention mechanism is mounted.

Chaintech 6JVD2 (Apollo Pro266)

The 6JVD2 has two DDR DIMM slots and two “normal” SDR DIMM slots, so users can choose to stay with their current PC133 SDRAM if they want to. There is another variation of the board, the 6JVD, which has three DDR slots and no SDR slots.
