Overall: The near $100 retail price is just too much for this set. The subwoofer is powerful, but muddy. It is not crisp or punchy at all, just kind of muffled; having the controls on the subwoofer is not convenient at all. The volume and 3D controls are likely to be used fairly often, so why put them so far out of reach?
[...] We have listened to many other systems from other manufacturers over the years, and seldom have we seen a set of satellites paired with a subwoofer so far on the other end of the spectrum. If the subwoofer was softened up a bit and made crisper, and the satellites were brought down to a more mid-range level, they would be a better fit for the PC market. But as they sit today, we have to recommend that AVault readers pass on by the S4-3050M series and spend their money elsewhere.
Overall: These speakers are very similar to the 3050M's in terms of sound characteristics: Same bass/treble disparity, same muddy, inaccurate subwoofer and same ear splitting high treble satellites. However, they differ from their sibling in one important area -- the CM7 breakout controller. It is a separate box that has volume, bass, treble and balance controls in addition to a mute button, a 1/8" earphone jack and a button to activate the 3D sound mode. The slick looking unit can be mounted right in a 5.25" drive bay if desired, or thanks to the external cable, can be placed on the outside of the computer as well. The extra $50 is a lot to pay for this feature, but we honestly feel that once you try it, you will wonder how you lived without it.
