Orion tipte ons over AnandTech's Celeron 766 review. De nieuwe Celeron stelt qua features niets meer voor dan zijn voorgangers met een lagere snelheid. De vraag is dan ook of het interessant is om voor deze CPU te gaan als je op zoek bent naar een nieuwe value-processor. De Celeron heeft een groter cache met een breder datapad dan de Duron, maar ook een veel lagere FSB. De benchmarks van Anand maken duidelijk welk design het beste is. Zowel op zakelijk als op gamesgebied moest het Celeron het afleggen tegen de Duron. Daarom is de conclusie ook dat hij alleen geschikt is voor mensen die een oud Socket370 systeem nieuw leven willen inblazen:

What should you take away from all of this? For starters, the Celeron, now at 766MHz, is mainly an upgrade chip, since there is clearly a better option if you are building a new system from scratch. For those of you that need us to spell it out, the Duron is obviously a much better alternative not to mention that, clock for clock, it is cheaper than the Celeron. A Socket-A platform carries quite a bit of upgrade potential as you will be able to drop an Athlon in there later on, and if you pick up a DDR board or a motherboard with true 266MHz FSB support (based on the VIA KT133A chipset) you will be able to use future Athlons as well.

Reactor Critical heeft een artikel geschreven over de volgende generatie videochip van 3dfx, die nu onder de codenaam 'Rampage' bekend staat. Ze verwachten dat Rampage in ieder geval geen geweldig snel geheugen zal krijgen, omdat door de scalable architecture een deel van het geheugen verloren gaat aan overhead. Het extra geheugen dat nodig is om dat te compenseren zou simpelweg te duur zijn volgens het artikel. De VSA-200 (zoals hij waarschijnlijk uiteindelijk zal heten) gaat volgens als we Reactor Critical mogen geloven zo'n 2.5 keer sneller zijn dan zijn voorganger, mede omdat hij kan samenwerken met de Sage, een aparte T&L processor van 3dfx:

All things considered, we are going to get a performance boost by 2-2.5 times in relation to similar Voodoo5 models. This will bring in "full-blooded" scene anti-aliasing (FSAA 4x) even at such high resolutions as 1024x768x32 for the double-chip model. In all probability, the Rampage will have a sufficiently powerful TCL unit to crank up the speed of the new generation of games with 100,000-200,000 polygons per frame and blast away! Some of the supported DX8 functions will bring about high-quality games, which one should expect to hatch a year or so following the accelerator's release. But it is also true that we may never see many promising features included when the Rampage is finally available.

Als je precies wil weten waarom men deze conclusie trekt, surf dan deze kant op. lawaai, bedankt voor de tip.

Digit Life heeft een heleboel info online gezet over de dingen die op het gebied van chipsets kunnen verwachten. Op servergebied zal het in de tweede helft van 2001 ineens druk worden, we kunnen bijvoorbeeld AMD 760MP en Micron Mamba rond die tijd verwachten. Ook voor Intel CPU's staan een aantal chipsets in de planning, zoals het Socket370 broertje van Mamba genaamd Copperhead en de VIA Apollo PX266, een Pentium III chipset met DDR ondersteuning. Intel zelf komt met de 860 chipset en verder lijkt de ServerWorks GrandChampion-HE de enige andere chipset voor de 'Pentium 4 Xeon' oftewel Foster. Voor ons nederige thuisgebruikers ziet het kaartje er ongeveer zo uit:

January: VIA will release KT266, while integrated chipsets still have SDRAM support - KLE133 will be launched. As for integrated chipsets, ATI seems to become a leader with its new ArtX2+. SiS will also launch SiS 740 chipset…

February: VIA is going to release PM266 with improved S3's graphics core code-named Paramount (about 40% higher performance in 3D applications is promised). Micron will launch its Scimitar chipset.

March: the first new generation integrated chipset for Athlon - VIA KM266. SiS will reply with SiS 640 and SiS 550. ALi will launch its M1648, and the first chipset from NVIDIA, Crush 11 and Crush 12, will enter the market.

April: VIA will release its new KL266 integrated chipset without external AGP support. i815EP will get the Tualatin CPU support.

May: nothing special

June: everything and everyone becomes integrated - ALi with its M1657 and ATI with its newest code-named A3 chipset.

PC Stats heeft de Napa DAV309 CD/VCD/MP3 speler gereviewed. Deze portable speler speelt naast CD's ook MP3's en video-CD's af. Voor $135 krijg je naast de speler ook nog een battery pack, netadapter, afstandsbediening, audio/video kabel en een koptelefoon. De bediening van de speler is goed te noemen. Het bekende nadeel van de Napa, namelijk het gebrek aan ESP (Electronic Shock Protection), steekt ook in deze review weer de kop op. De speler skipt hierdoor al bij de geringste schok. Duidelijk is dat de fabrikant meer aandacht heeft besteed aan het uiterlijk dan aan de prestaties van de speler:

All in all we were very disappointed with the NAPA DAV309 CD/MP3 player. It looks amazing in pictures, and the outward design of the unit is eye-catching and very attractive, but the features, usability, and even documentation are just so lacking that it has the feel of a freshly painted shell of a junk-yard car in one of those 30-min infomercials.

That said, a distinction should be made between portable use of this unit - which would just be frustrating beyond belief because of the skipping problems, and use in a stable home-entertainment setting. In the latter circumstance the unit will fair just fine, it will play the MP3 laden CDRW's without cause for concern, in addition to CD's and VCD if they happen to be available in your area.

The best part of the NAPA DAV309 is sadly how it looks. I freely admit that I had a lot of presumptions about its performance based on its outward appearance... it just looks really cool. Now if only we bought CD / Mp3 players for their looks.

Bij Inside Hardware is een review verschenen van de Pioneer 105S DVD-ROM speler (IDE). Deze slot-in drive leest DVD's op een snelheid van 16X en CD-ROM's op 40X. Pioneer maakt momenteel de snelste DVD drives op de markt; de 16X drive van AOpen komt namelijk ook van Pioneer. De 105S is dan ook bij identiek aan de 16X DVD-ROM van AOpen. Een leuke feature van de 105S is de S/PDIF uitgang direct achter op de speler. De 105S is niet alleen snel, maar ook erg luidruchtig. Gelukkig zijn Tweakers dat wel gewend.

Rated at a 16x DVD-ROM read speed the Pioneer 105S is undoubtedly the fastest available. The cool looking Slot format also a real eye catcher. CD-ROM data transfer speeds were excellent and In the CD Speed 99 benchmark I was actually able to get above the rated 40x read speed. Not only does this drive read media incredibly fast, it's also quick to respond (low access times).

Priced at $109, can you go wrong by buying this drive? No! That of course is if you don't mind the noise that it produces. If you don't like the slot loading feature and want to save a few bucks, you can always get the Tray version for $93. Pioneer definitely has a outstanding product here. In two words, I can pretty much sum up what I think of this 16X DVD-ROM. "DAMN FAST!"

Pros:
16X DVD Read Speeds. As well as incredibly fast CD-ROM speeds.
UDMA-33 support.
Very eye appealing. Has the ability to mount vertically or horizontally.

Cons:
Loud!! It sort of sounds like a muffled jet engine.

XBit meldt dat Japan is begonnen met de verkoop van i850 Tehama mobo's. De prijzen liggen behoorlijk hoog, vooral bij de P4T plank van Asus. De P4T wordt geleverd met een metalen backplate die het mogelijk maakt om de plank te monteren in towers die niet voldoen aan de nieuwe ATX 2.03 specs. Verder heeft 't bord een aantal overclocking features, zoals een BIOS en dipswitch setup van de busspeeds in 2-3MHz stappen tussen 100 en 150MHz (400-600MHz datarate). Dit alles maakt het bord maar liefst 100 dollar duurder dan de Gigabyte 8TX en Intel D850GB, die in Japan verkocht worden voor prijzen van respectievelijk 250 en 270 dollar (omgerekend zo'n 760 tot 825 piek!).

De Tehama chipset is in zijn uppie grotendeels verantwoordelijk voor de hoge prijzen. Waar de gangbare chipset prijzen tussen de 30 en 40 dollar liggen, is de Tehama met een prijs van 75 dollar fors duurder. Als de Japanse prijzen representatief zijn voor de rest van de wereld dan is voorlopig niet alleen de P4/Rambus combo aan de dure kant, maar zijn ook de mobo's onbetaalbaar...

Tom heeft voor de derde keer in een week een stuk over de Pentium 4 gepost. De eerste review had een vrij neutrale conclusie, maar in een update veranderde Tom's mening ineens drastisch omdat bleek dat de FPU van de processor veel te wensen overliet. In deze tweede update stelt hij echter zijn mening weer bij. Tom heeft namelijk van Intel een speciaal voor de Pentium 4 geoptimaliseerde versie van FlaskMPEG gekregen, die naast een enorme boost voor de P4 ook voor Pentium 3 en zelfs voor de Althon een zeer positief effect had op de performance. Een nieuwe versie van de Intel compiler en een paar SSE2 optimalizaties zorgen voor dit effect:

If the situation with FlasK MPEG should be exemplary for Pentium 4's performance - and why shouldn't it? - then it really counts on the software industry to at least re-compile their applications to make Pentium 4 look a whole lot better. Once that's done Pentium 4 has a good chance to become a success even at its current clock speeds.

Of course this is easier said than done. Which software maker would supply its customers with a new and free version of its product, although it only took a re-compilation? Which software maker will even bother to do that for the time being? After all Pentium 4 systems are very expensive and thus not exactly widely spread. We know that Intel has a very forceful way of 'convincing' other industries to follow them. We will see how much power Intel has right now. For the time being Intel is in the same situation AMD used to be with K6-2 and 3D Now! Without proper support of the software industry it will be hard to make a product such as Pentium 4 successful. Let's not feel too sorry for Intel however. It is in a lot better situation than AMD used to be.
