iXBT Labs heeft wat informatie weten te vergaren over de Intel i815EP chipset. De i815EP chipset is de 'opgevoerde' versie van de alom bekende i815E en heeft ondersteuning voor meer geheugen (1,5GB vs. 0,5GB) en moet het doen zonder verrotte onboard graphics. De chipset is verder pin compatible met de i815E en zal waarschijnlijk ergens in het midden van december aangekondigd worden:

The chipset is supposed to appear under the name sounding as "BX133" (in order to avoid confusions with i815E). To tell the truth, we would have definitely taken it for the enhanced Intel 440BX, if it were not for the pin-compatibility with the present i815E.

The new chipset is most likely to be announced in mid December together with the first mainboards based on it. Among the first companies to introduce their BX133-based solutions are: ASUS, Gigabyte, MSI, Abit, EPoX, etc. However, we will see Intel 815EP (BX133) based products in retail only in Q1 2001.

Frankly speaking, we though Intel would launch something of the kind a while ago already and we did not understand what prevented the company from doing it earlier. Especially, since the slow integrated graphics just added to the chipset cost and not to its attractiveness.

We kregen een tip van The Jester dat op F&L een stukje is te vinden over de eerste verkrijgbare DDR modules. Crucial biedt via haar website al Micron Modules aan, en wel in twee smaken: PC200 en PC266, de PC200 module is voor 100Mhz fsb systemen, en de PC266 is voor 133Mhz fsb systemen. Deze modules zijn DDR waardoor de EV6 bus van de AMD systemen effectief op 200 en 266Mhz werken. Hier een stuk uit de tekst van fnl.nl:

Als een van de eerste aanbieders levert de grootste Amerikaanse geheugenfabrikant Micron Double-Data-Rate SDRAM-DIMM's. Vooral de prijs van de PC200 modules is interessant. Die zijn namelijk niet duurder dan PC133-222-geheugenstrips. Hierdoor kosten PC200-modules 25 procent meer dan de op dit moment meest verkochte PC100-22-DIMM's van dezelfde fabrikant. Voor de op dit moment snelste DDR-SDRAM-snelheidsklasse PC266 vraagt Micron nog ongeveer 10 procent meer.

Het verschil in prijs tussen de PC200 en PC266 voor 128MB modules is ongeveer $5, ongeveer gelijk aan het verschil tussen PC100 (2:2:2) en PC133 (3:3:3). Helaas wordt er niet vermeld of de PC266 modules cas2 of cas3 zijn, wat een groot verschil zou kunnen betekenen.

RAID is tegenwoordig hot, en Koen Crijns van Hardwareinfo.net heeft derhalve een review geschreven over de Promise FastTrak 100 controller. De FastTrak 100 is een simpel PCI kaartje wat voor 350 gulden de bezitter de mogelijkheid geeft om maximaal 4 schijven in een RAID 0 of 1 setupje te draaien. De benchmarks wijzen uit dat RAID een flinke boost in performance kan geven, en de conclusie is dan ook dat striping voor de thuisgebruiker zeker leuk is en volgens Koen is een mirroring-systeem zelfs een minimum vereiste voor iedere bedrijfsserver:

Uit de benchmarks op de vorige pagina kunnen we afleiden dat IDE RAID zeker zeer interessant voor veel mensen kan zijn. Met een prijskaartje van ongeveer Fl. 350,-- is de Promise FastTrak 100 zeer betaalbaar. Het FastTrak is zo’n 200 gulden duurder dan de Ultra 100, zodat je je zelfs kunt afvragen of ombouwen wel de moeite waard is. De klussers hebben door middel van ombouwen een stuk goedkoper een IDE RAID controller, maar degene die zich hier niet aan wagen krijgen bij de échte FastTrak ook een uitgebreide handleiding, een extra IDE kabel en uiteraard garantie en ondersteuning.

Wij zijn in ieder geval zeer enthousiast over de mogelijkheden van IDE RAID. Een mirroring-systeem is eigenlijk een minimum vereiste van iedere bedrijfsserver, hoe klein dan ook, en een striping-systeem geeft de thuis gebruiker net wat meer harddisk performance!

The Reg heeft weer goed nieuws, de Pentium 4 is nog steeds niet uit, maar de prijzen zijn wederom verlaagd . De prijs voor de 1,4GHz Pentium 4 is van 652 dollar naar 625 dollar gegaan en de prijs van de 1,5GHz Pentium 4 is van 827 dollar naar 795 dollar gegaan (zoals gebruikelijk dit alles in prijzen per duizend):

Figures leaked to hardware site OC Workbench reveal that the 1.4GHz P4 will now debut at $625, while its big brother 1.5GHz will set you back $795 in 1Ku quantities. Only a couple of weeks ago, Chipzilla was planning to flog the chips at $652 and $827 respectively.

Back in July, the 1.4GHz was priced at $895 and the now-discontinued 1.3GHz was tagged at $795. The demise of the 1.3GHz part, along with the earlier than expected move to 1.7GHz (Q1) and 2GHz (Q2) are strong pointers that P4 yields are now looking pretty healthy.

De mannen van GamePC hebben een review geschreven over de Asus iPanel. De iPanel is een handig geval wat past in een standaard 5.25" bay en allerhande informatie geeft over de status van je PC. Zo kan de iPanel bijvoorbeeld de frequentie van je CPU en geheugen laten weergeven of ook handig voor de overclockers onder ons: de temperatuur van verschillende overdelen waaronder de CPU. Verder zijn er nog een paar USB poorten aanwezig en vier hotkeys. Er is voorlopig nog één nadeel aan de iPanel: hij is alleen bruikbaar met een Asus CUSL2 moederbord, maar de verwachting is dat toekomstige plankjes van Asus ook ondersteuning gaan bieden voor de iPanel:

The iPanel is a small device that rests in a standard 5.25" bay and connects to Asus motherboards with an appropriate connector (currently ONLY the CUSL2 series has this connector). We assume Asus will add this connector to most future motherboards. The back of the iPanel opens to conceal the ribbon cable's connectors. There is also a connection for the two USB ports that are mounted on the front of the iPanel. While the CUSL2 comes with an extra 3 USB ports that can be connected to the motherboard and mounted to an empty slot in back, the standard package leaves the USB connector near the iPanel connector available.

[...] Asus will also be releasing the iPanel deluxe soon. This will include a front mounted serial port, IR interface and audio connectors. Although, I believe the audio connectors will only work with the on-board audio of the i815E board.

The iPanel serves as a great troubleshooting aid, and many overclockers will enjoy its features. It reports back clock, temperature and fan information at a touch of a button, as well as giving users easy access to a pair of front mounted USB connectors. When tweaking a computer, the iPanel will also report status straight from the BIOS in the case of a system halt. One minor flaw of the iPanel is the refresh rate of the displayed readings is a little slow, about one update per minute or so. If you are a CUSL2 owner and have an extra 5.25" bay to spare, the iPanel would make a fine addition to any overclocker's system.

FragNeck berichtte dat Westwood's Red Alert 2 is uitgekomen. Dit spel uit de succesvolle serie Command & Conquer, waarbij je tegen de Allied Force of the Sovjets speelt, is nu uit met voor de verandering weer nieuwe structures en units. Check hieronder enkele screenshots. Een leuk puntje vind ik toch wel de gebruikte bliksems, de Eiffeltoren en het Vrijheidsbeeld.

Graag zou ik iedereen die wil klagen dat dit niet hier op Tweakers.net hoort door willen verwijzen naar het forum.

Het Secure Digital Music Initiative ontkent weer dat haar watermerktechniek voor muziek succesvol gekraakt is. Negen wetenschappers zouden van de week vier van de zes door de SDMI geteste technologieën gekraakt hebben, maar de SDMI ontkent dat er van een succesvolle kraak sprake is. Het SDMI zegt dat de geluidskwaliteit van de vier gekraakte songs verminderd is. Hieronder een gedeelte uit het artikel van WebWereld:

Op dit punt ontaardt de discussie tussen de twee partijen in een vaag welles-nietes-debat.

Het onderzoeksteam is zich van geen kwaad bewust. Er zou geen hoorbaar kwaliteitsverlies zijn opgetreden. Dat is heel goed mogelijk, zo verweert de SDMI zich: de verschillen zijn alleen door experts met de vermaarde 'gouden oortjes' waar te nemen. Wat het allemaal nog warriger maakt, is dat de door de SDMI beschikbaar gestelde liedjes van een slechte geluidskwaliteit waren.

Hilbert Hagedoorn van Guru3D.com heeft een guide online gezet waarin uit de doeken wordt gedaan hoe je, je kast kan uitrusten met een aantal extra ventilatoren. In de guide wordt uitgelegd hoe je een miditower kan voorzien met 2 extra intake fans en één extra outtake fan. Het blijkt dat deze drie extra fans goed helpen om de kast en zijn ingewanden koel te houden, de temperatuur in de kast mocht een daling van 10 graden mee maken en de CPU zelfs één van 12 graden onder stresscondities :

Well, I really tried to stress it to generate high temperatures but the heat doesn’t have a chance. Once and a while I put my hand over the top fan and I could never feel any difference of the temp. of out coming air. And the hang-ups after 1-2 hour of gaming totally disappeared. So I tried to raise the FSB to 144 (1008 MHz) and the system started up. After stressing the system for a half hour or so the system hang again. But the temperature was basically the same as earlier. So I increased the voltage from 1.7 to 1.8 volts. And voila! It hasn’t crashed ever since! The temperature is almost the same as running @ 994. I got a little bit greedy (of course and tried to increase the bus even more. Next step for the FSB is 150 MHz and that was a little bit too much. Never got Windows started. But not only I got rid of the hang-ups, I even got it run faster with excellent stability.

[...] - If you find that you want to be able to squeeze a couple of extra MHz out of your system without putting a freezer or a waterworks into your case this can be it. Or if you know that you have a heat problem with your system this could be the easiest way. It’s not for sure you’ll need three fans. Anyway the system likes being cool. And the increased sound level is still at an acceptable level. I realized that its not much more noisier than my working computer with boxed PIII700 and a Geforce. So I hope my experiences can be of any use for you casemodders out there!

Sony heeft twee verse modellen met de nieuwe mobile PIII-850 processor aan de Vaio F en Vaio XG notebook series toegevoegd. Het volk van Neoseeker heeft een review over de Guillemot Maxi Sound Muse geschreven. Deze 4 speaker budget kaart van Guillemot heeft ondersteuning voor A3D 1.0, EAX 1 en DS3D. Men vindt de software die mee wordt geleverd evenals in deze review niet echt interessant. De kaart kreeg een score van 72%:

The MUSE is a great card and is priced very competitively against the Creative’s lower priced SB128 and SB64 cards. It even reaches upwards and above that into the realm of the SBLive Value area, and has little problems playing the various games we threw at it. I find it a shame that Guillemot chose not to take full advantage of the CMI8738’s capabilities. The CMI8738 chip has a very interesting feature: full support for a 24bit SPDIF inputs and a SPDIF output capable of 44.1K and 48K signal formats. At this price point, an SPDIF intput/output pair would have lured digital recording enthusiasts and would have pushed the MUSE straight past non-OEM competitor products such as the Diamond Sonic Impact S100 and the SBLive PCI-128.

With an MSRP of $29.99 and prices as low as $26, the MUSE is priced for a budget market. Compare it to a $40 Vortex2 Quad based sound card, or a $40 SBLive Value, and you can see that Guillemot is definitely aiming for a cost effective quad speaker solution. At this prices range, the MUSE does excellently. We had hoped the MUSE would be sort of a cut-in low-cost replacement for a Vortex 2, but its lack of A3D 2.0 support and its disturbingly high CPU usage take it out of that race. Instead, because of those factors, the card is more favorably compared against Creative’s PCI128 and AWE64 cards, priced around $29.99 – which is where Guillemot was targeting right from the start. I primarily split my sound card usage between multimedia audio and gamesplay, so something with high CPU usage won’t stay in my box for long. On the other hand, a family computer with a need for a solid multimedia card supporting current 3d gaming API’s will find this card fits the bill perfectly. All in all, a fine card, for what its aimed for, but not a card for someone who just bought themselves a shiny new RADEON or GeForce 2.

Volgens een onderzoek van het Pew Internet & American Life Project maken zwarte Amerikanen intelligenter gebruik van internet dan blanke. Van de zwarte Amerikaanse bevolking heeft 36% toegang tot internet, tegen de helft van alle blanken in de VS:

Zwarte mensen gebruiken het web om gericht naar informatie te zoeken, terwijl blanken liever chatten en mailen. Volgens het rapport gebruikt 45 procent van de zwarte bevolking het web om informatie over gezondheidszorg te vinden, tegen 25 procent blanke internetters. Tevens zoeken zwarte Amerikanen intensiever naar info over religie, hobby's, werk en huisvesting.

Het bureau pleegde een telefonisch onderzoek onder 12.751 burgers tussen 1 maart en 20 augustus. Van deze groep zijn 1501 mensen zwart, en surfen er 586 op het web. Bijna de helft van de zwarte Amerikaanse onlinebevolking – meer dan 3,5 miljoen mensen – logde dit jaar voor het eerst in.

Bert McComas van InQuest Market Research heeft een artikel geschreven waarin wordt gekeken naar de snelheidsverbetering die DDR geheugen geeft in combinatie met de Pentium III en VIA Apollo Pro266 chipset. Het blijkt dat de snelheid niet drastisch omhoog gaat als er DDR geheugen wordt gebruikt in plaats van SDR of Rambus geheugen, afhankelijk van de benchmarks is er in de meeste gevallen een snelheidswinst van 2% tot 10% te zien. Deze resultaten mogen misschien niet al te schokkend zijn, maar als je meerekent dat DDR geheugen op den duur even goedkoop zal worden als SDR geheugen is deze verbetering in performance niet slecht. Verder zijn deze resultaten ook niet heel erg slecht als je bedenkt dat de Pentium III slechts een FSB heeft van 100MHz of 133MHz en dus nauwelijks kan profiteren van DDR geheugen. Voor echte interessante resultaten met DDR geheugen zal je dus niet bij de Pentium 3 moeten zijn, maar bij de Duron of Athlon en misschien in de toekomst bij de Pentium 4:

Game performance is a factor that is closely scrutinized in the market today. Two of the more commonly benchmarked games are Quake3 and Expendable. Default resolution modes were used in both cases in order to remove the question of possible accelerator bottlenecks. The Apollo Pro266 performance advantage is a healthy 4-7% as seen in the charts below. These benchmarks stress the processor’s floating-point unit, DRAM performance and CPU to AGP command traffic for the accelerator. DDR’s high bandwidth and low latency benefit all of these functions, delivering a performance advantage that is nearly equivalent to one CPU speed grade. This is an attractive advantage for P3 game enthusiasts.


CPUmark99 and the 3D WinBench Processor Test from Ziff Davis shown in the chart below also indicate a consistent advantage for DDR. CPUmark99 is a very processor centric benchmark. Though it does produce some DRAM activity, its results are muted slightly compared to many of the other benchmarks. On the other hand, 3D WinBench produces results that are consistent, or even magnify the observations from the 3D game benchmarks.


[...] Overall, these benchmarks seem to indicate an attractive performance advantage for DDR and VIAs’ Apollo Pro266 chip set. This performance advantage cannot be attributed to latency differences alone, since both SDRAM systems were configured to the slowest CL3 timings. In fact, there is still plenty of room for further DDR performance optimization, as CL2.5 and CL2.0 become the dominant speed grades.

Voorlopig gaan we er nog vanuit dat de kwestie via een nette manier door Klein afgehandeld zal worden, maar mocht het nodig zijn dan bestaat er de mogelijkheid om via civielrechtelijke procedure stappen te ondernemen. Bedenk dat de kosten voor een gezamenlijke actie een stuk lager zijn dan individuele acties (drempel is dan ook lager), en dat uitspraken niet per definitie bindend zullen zijn voor alle gedupeerden.

EETimes schrijft dat Acer Labs in onderhandeling is met Intel over het afgeven van een licentie voor de Pentium 4 bus. Dit zou ALi in staat stellen om begin volgend jaar een eigen SDRAM chipset voor de Pentium 4 op de markt te brengen (thanks Elefino voor de tip):

ALI hopes to have chip sets that support both the AMD Athlon and Intel's upcoming Pentium 4 processors. ALI is negotiating with Intel for a license to its Pentium 4 bus, which it hopes to have in time for products that could roll early next year. ALI does not expect any imminent announcement on that front, however.

[...] As Intel ponders its options, "We think we could double our chip set sales in 2001," Tai said. ALI also plans to refresh its line of chip sets for notebook computers.

But ALI's success depends in part on obtaining a license to the Pentium 4 bus from Intel, and on Intel's decision to quickly field SDRAM and DDR chip sets of its own. Rumors are already sweeping Taipei that Intel plans a chip set that would support SDRAM and DDR for the Pentium III, a mainstream target where much of ALI's business exists today.

Verder meldt EETimes dat de reeds in juli aangekondigde ALi MAGiK DDR chipset voor de Athlon en Duron volgende maand in produktie gaat.

De goede mensen van Tweak3D hebben een artikel geschreven over het verminderen van de opstarttijd van je computer. In het kort wordt gekeken hoe je via wat BIOS tweaking en het veranderen van de opstartbestanden weer wat minder nuttige tijd verspeelt aan het booten van je (Windows 9x/ME) PC. Tips die de ervaren tweaker waarschijnlijk al lang kent, maar met een hoog 'oja!'-gehalte. Hier het gedeelte over de BIOS:

There are a few settings within the BIOS that you can change/set that will speed up boot time. One of the most important ones is QuickPOST (might also be called QuickBoot or something along those lines). You will want to enable this setting because it will tell the computer to skip over some of the system tests that it usually does before letting the computer load the OS. Another thing that I would consider setting would be the settings for all of the hard drives in the system. You can do this by running the IDE Auto-Detection program and letting it detect your hard drive(s). Once it has done that, go back to the main BIOS screen and make sure all of the other channels are set to none. Don't worry if you have a CD-ROM drive connected to one of those 'none' channels, the computer detects CD-ROM drives differently than it does hard disks.

The next thing to go through and check would be the boot sequence and set it to boot the C drive (hard disk) first. Now, this means you won't be able to boot using a floppy unless you entirely disable the hard drive, or you go back to this setting and change it later - but it is worth the extra effort on those rare occasions that you need to boot using a floppy disk, because this will speed up your boot time by 3 to 4 seconds in many cases. After that is done, go and make sure that floppy boot seek is disabled - the BIOS will detect the location of the floppy drives anyway, it doesn't need to independently test each one during the power on self test.

Electic Tech bericht in dit nieuwsbericht dat AMD de trotse eigenaar is geworden van het tien miljoenste patent in de World Patents Index van Derwent Information. In de WPI zijn wereldwijde patenten geregistreerd om het zo makkelijker te maken voor andere bedrijven of geïnteresseerden om deze patenten op te zoeken. Het getal is een belangrijke mijlpaal voor de "patentenindustrie":

According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, patent applications have increased by more than 50% since 1992. Keeping abreast of patents awarded in the United States and across the globe is more crucial than ever. "The 10 millionth record marks a significant milestone," said AMD's Harry Wolin.

Mark Houghton, Director for Integrated Products at Derwent, agreed. "That is now 10 million inventions, whose patent applications have been translated, abstracted, indexed and made searchable within Derwent WPI, providing thousands of companies from around the world with an excellent source of technical, scientific and business information."
