Willi liet ons weten dat de Pentium 4 alweer met een probleem te kampen heeft. Dit keer zit het probleem niet in de chip zelf, maar in de ondersteunende chipset op het moederbord. Deze kan er niet goed tegen als je een grafische kaart in een PCI slot zet. Voor de meeste mensen is dit niet zo'n probleem, maar als je meer dan een of twee monitoren op een systeem wilt gebruiken ben je altijd aangewezen op PCI grafische kaarten. De enige manier om maximaal twee monitoren te gebruiken op een P4 is met kaarten zoals de Matrox DualHead serie of de nVidia GeForce MX met TwinView:

HardwareCentral heeft een review gemaakt van Gigabyte's i815EP moederbord, de GA-6OXE. Zoals je weet is de i815EP interessant omdat we nu niet meer onnodig worden opgescheept met ingebakken graphics, iets wat de prijs ook nogeens erg doet zakken. Dit plankje heeft verder 4 DIMM sloten, 6x PCI en een AGP en CNR slotje. Als extra'tje heeft Gigabyte de GA-6OXE voorzien een DualBIOS en onboard 4-channel audio. Daarnaast kan er met EasyTune III wat basic overclocking gedaan worden, maar verwacht daar niet veel van. Toch is de reviewer vanwege een goede stabiliteit en performance zeker niet ontevreden:

Overall, the GA-6OXE is a very solid offering. Stability and performance were excellent, paralleling even the 815E Pro from MicroStar.

Since the board is based on the new 815EP variant, it should be priced considerably lower than most other 815E-based boards, which is very attractive. Furthermore, when you consider the extra features like DualBIOS, and on-board Creative Labs 4-channel analog and digital sound, the 6OXE is a very attractive option indeed.

Unfortunately, due to the voltage limitations, and use of jumpers for FSB settings, our recommendation to overclockers still goes to MSI’s 815E Pro. For users not interested in overclocking, though, the 6OXE is the better option. For around the same price as the MSI board, you’ll get Gigabyte’s DualBIOS, plus on-board digital audio, a feature worth at least $40 in its own right, without sacrificing stability or performance.

In summary, a very solid product. Excellent stability, excellent performance, and a very reasonable price. You really can’t ask for much more than that.

Eric van Ballegoie liet ons weten dat DVDzone.nl een nieuwe review heeft gemaakt van de nieuwe Cyber Home DVD spelers. Deze kunnen vrijwel alle standaard CD/DVD formaten afspelen, van AudioCD via VideoCD en SVCD tot DVD-Video.

De Cyber Home spelers zijn in staat om vrijwel alles af te spelen. Van DVD en Video CD tot MP3 en SVCD, de Cyber Home spelers kunnen ermee overweg. Beide spelers zijn naast de standaard aansluitingen voorzien van een RGB SCART aansluiting voor optimale beeldkwaliteit. Over de optische of coaxiale uitgang kan geluid in PCM (44, 48 en 96 KHz) en Dolby Digital / DTS weergegeven worden.

ZDNet schrijft in dit artikel dat AMD extra aandacht gaat besteden om meer marktaandeel te winnen in de zakelijke PC-markt. Hoewel de chipbakker in de consumentenmarkt het afgelopen jaar erg populair is geworden is Intel in het zakelijke segment nog steeds oppermachtig. Voor AMD is het erg belangrijk om daar ook voet aan de grond te krijgen aangezien wereldwijd die zakelijke markt goed is voor 60 procent van de verkopen. Om dit te bewerkstelligen zal AMD de productie flink moeten opvoeren en een geschikt platform voor zakelijke gebruikers moeten kunnen aanbieden:

After grabbing a larger share of the personal-computer market, Advanced Micro Devices is next aiming to take on rival Intel in the all-important corporate PC market.

The issue of volume is especially important in the corporate market, where 61 million units are sold each year. "The biggest challenge [for AMD] is volume," Kay says. AMD will ship about 25 million processors this year, almost all of which will go into the consumer market. The company says it is ramping up production and expects to have enough capacity to handle a 30% world-wide market share.

Still, analysts say AMD must show it has a stable platform of chips that a corporate customer can have confidence in for more than a year. Part of the problem has been that AMD has changed its chip set -- the surrounding components that help run the PC -- or the packaging of its processors too frequently. (And while AMD says it has an 18-month plan of products that shows stability, the company doesn't make its own chip sets, which makes it riskier.) Intel makes many of its own chip sets and motherboards, the main circuit board in a PC. Business users appreciate being able to manage their PCs easily across an organization of thousands of users by using standardized parts.

"It's those two things -- stability and manageability -- that will make or break AMD in the corporate market," Gartner's Knox says.

Bij Storage Review staat een review van de Pioneer DVD-305S. Deze 10 speed SCSI DVD-drive volgt de 304S op die destijds te kampen had met slechte CD-RW leesbaarheid, Digital Audio Extraction performance en DVD transfer rates. Gelukkig doet deze nieuwe versie het een stuk beter, alhoewel DAE nog steeds niet helemaal 100% is. Als je toch niet van plan was je DVD-drive hiervoor te gaan gebruiken is de DVD-305S een erg goede keus:

In our original review of Pioneer's DVD-304S, we found three issues which kept us from recommending the drive over its main competitor, Toshiba's SD-M1401. These were, difficulty reading CD-RW media during random accesses, digital audio extraction quality issues, and lower-than-expected DVD transfer rates. Since the DVD-305S has nearly identical specs to the 304S, we're led to believe that the introduction of the 305S is primarily to address these and perhaps other issues. For the most part, the 305S succeeds. The worst issue, inability to read CD-RW media when random accesses are attempted, does not exist at all in the 305S. However, the DAE issue has not been addressed at all to our knowledge. In fact, in all appearances the 304S DAE issues were just traded in for the DVD-115's DAE issues. Lastly, it appears as if the DVD transfer rate issue has been resolved.

Is this enough to dethrone the Toshiba SD-M1401? We feel it depends on how seriously one takes the DAE issue. In our view, this issue is limited and in many cases may never come into play for most users. We understand the needs of serious audiophiles, though, and cannot recommend the 305S to such folks if they plan to use this drive to extract digital audio. To most others, though, we have no qualms with recommending the DVD-305S over the Toshiba SD-M1401. It is a superior CD, CD-R, and CD-RW reader, and DVD transfer rates are about equal to those of the Toshiba.

In dit artikel van WebWereld valt te lezen dat Startpagina met ingang van het volgende jaar bedrijven 50 cent per doorklik wil laten betalen. De veertig bedrijven die nu nog betalen voor een vermelding op de site zijn momenteel Fl. 3500 per maand kwijt. De nieuwe regel kan als gevolg hebben dat sommige klanten maar liefst 200.000 per jaar zullen moeten ophoesten:

Al deze bedrijven hebben een nieuwe aanbieding van Startpagina ontvangen. Er zal veel meer betaald moeten worden. Het grootste verschil is dat er geen sprake meer is van een vast bedrag per maand, maar dat men per doorklik moet betalen. In het geval van bijvoorbeeld Consumerdesk betekent dat een jaarbedrag van 200.000.

Deze prijsvergelijker krijgt ruim 30.000 kliks per maand via Startpagina. Hiervoor moet 50 cent per klik worden betaald. Ann Jepma – marketing manager van Consumerdesk – is bepaald niet blij met Startpagina. "Het eerste kwartaal zullen wij in ieder geval niet betalen. Het oude bedrag van 3500 gulden per maand vond ik nog acceptabel, maar dit niet meer." [break]Alhoewel de meeste bedrijven dus erg geschrokken zijn van deze actie kan het Startpagina.nl allemaal maar weinig boeien:[/break]Bert Wiggers van Startpagina raakt naar eigen zeggen 'niet koud of warm' van het geklaag. "Ze schrikken er gewoon van. Jarenlang hebben ze bijna niets hoeven te betalen. Nu wel. Maar het is een goede propositie." Wiggers benadrukt dat alleen commerciële bedrijven moeten betalen voor een vermelding. Voorwaarde voor Startpagina is wel dat ze een goede site hebben. "Alleen geld is niet genoeg", aldus Wiggers.

De mensen van x-bit labs zijn zo vriendelijk geweest om een review te schrijven van de ATi Radeon 32MB SDR-versie. De kaart wordt in deze review vergeleken met de GeForce2 MX, de DDR-versie van de Radeon en een 3dfx Voodoo4 4500. Natuurlijk is het verschil met de GeForce2 MX het belangrijkste.

Dankzij de bekende HyperZ techniek van ATi (techniek om de Z-buffer efficiënter te gebruiken, door o.a. onzichtbare pixels niet te renderen en compressie toe te passen) weet de Radeon 32MB SDR in resoluties hoger dan 1024x768x32 de GeForce2 MX te verslaan. De verschillen tussen de twee zijn echter marginaal, en de conclusie is dan ook dat de Radeon wel kan concurreren met de GF2MX, mits de prijs omlaag gaat:

From the technological point of view ATI RADEON 32MB SDR is more enhanced than GeForce2 MX and has more promising future.

Compared with GeForce2 MX, RADEON SDR features a more powerful T&L unit and more texture units per each rendering pipeline. That should have a favorable effect in games laying three textures over a pixel per clock. And games like that are sure to become available soon, as the next generation of graphics cards by NVIDIA, NV20, will have three texture units per pipeline. Moreover, the unique HyperZ technology lets RADEON working at lower frequencies beat GeForce2 MX at high resolutions and provides a significant performance gain in complicated 3D scenes.

However, the cost of this graphics card - $150 - is too much for a simple version with no TV-Out, no dual-display support and no DVI-Out. This way, the sum looks blatantly too high, considering similar graphics cards based on GeForce2 MX are available for $100-$110. So, to help ATI RADEON 32MB SDR occupy its niche on the market, the price should be reasonably lowered to the level of GeForce2 MX-based cards.

The Source stuurde een linkje naar dit artikel van AnandTech waarin de CPU roadmaps van Intel en AMD voor het komende jaar naast elkaar worden gelegd. We kunnen elke maand wel een nieuwe processor verwachten, dus er valt genoeg over te schrijven, maar Anand houdt het artikel kort en krachtig:

One question that continues to remain unanswered is what clock speed the first Palomino will actually run at. While we just mentioned that the first Palomino will be running at 1.5GHz, if you do the math you'll realize that 133MHz (the Athlon's new FSB) doesn't divide into 1500MHz to give a whole or a half multiplier. It is highly doubtful that AMD will use a 100MHz DDR FSB for the 1.5GHz processor, meaning that they will either introduce it as a 1466MHz part or a 1533MHz part using the 133MHz DDR FSB.

[...] Backing up a couple of months, at the start of the second quarter, in April 2001, Intel is set to release the Pentium 4 at 1.7GHz. This will continue to give the Intel at least a 200MHz clock speed advantage over AMD. We have yet to see a 1.6GHz Pentium 4 listed on any roadmaps, indicating that if one were to be manufactured that it would be released sometime in February or March of 2001.

X-Bit Labs heeft voor ons wat informatie over een viertal nieuwe moederborden van Asus:

CUSL2-LS

Dit moederbord is in feite een normale CUSL2, maar om hem geschikter te maken voor high-end systemen wordt er een speciale dochterkaart bijgeleverd waarop een Ultra160 SCSI controller en een 10/100 Mbit ethernetkaart zijn verwerkt.

CUV4X-D

Met dit moederbord gaat het juist de andere kant op, bedoeld als goedkope dual plank zijn van de CUV4X-DLS de SCSI controller en de ethernetkaart afgehaald om tot het CUV4X-D ontwerp te komen, beide planken zouden in het begin van 2001 op de markt moeten komen. A7S-VM

Dit is Asus' SiS730S (Socket A) moederbord, een goedkoop MicroATX plankje zonder AGP, gebruikers zitten dus opgescheept met een geïntegreerde SiS300 chipset voor hun graphics. Andere features zijn 4 PCI en 2 DIMM slots, ATA100, geluid en netwerk. Het plankje moet nog geen $100 gaan kosten en zal begin 2001 verschijnen.

Polo

Een extreem goedkoop bord met slechts 1 PCI slot voor Socket370 processors, gebaseerd op de SiS630 chipset:

To go on with the details, the board is provided with an integrated SIS 300-based graphics core, AC’97 sound and a network controller. It features no external AGP slot, but the PCI slot it has easily makes up for this shortcoming. So, to follow the trend, the next board should be absolutely «slotless». Why not? The board has a sound chip and a network controller already, and an external modem will do as well... As you can see, no slots are really needed.

Paul DeMone van Real World Technologies heeft vandaag het tweede deel van zijn artikel over de Alpha EV8 processor online gezet. De Alpha serie heeft qua performance altijd aan de leiding gestaan, de huidige 600MHz EV67 wint het nog makkelijk van een Pentium 4. Alpha is natuurlijk niet van plan de kroon uit handen te geven en gaat verder met de EV68 en EV7. Deze chips zullen echter grotendeels gebaseerd zijn op het EV6 ontwerp, met als extra toevoegingen een 0.18 micron fabrikageproces en on-die L2 cache.

De Alpha 21464 EV8, die in 2003 uitkomt met een snelheid van ongeveer 2GHz, zal echter een nieuw ontwerp hebben. Met 250 miljoen transistors, 0.13 micron SOI CMOS en een stroomverbruik van maar liefst 250 Watt zal deze SMT chip de traditie hoog moeten houden. In deel 1 legt Paul uit wat de belangrijkste verschillen ten opzichte van de oude EV6 processors zullen zijn en in deel 2 legt hij uit wat SMT nou precies is en wat er nodig is om dit te implementeren:

The EV8 uses a more powerful mechanism than either coarse or fine grained multithreading to exploit TLP. Called Simultaneous Multithreading (SMT), it allows the instructions from two or more threads to be issued to execution units each cycle. This process is illustrated conceptually in Figure 1D. The advantage of SMT is that it permits TLP to be exploited all the way down to the most fundamental level of hardware operation - instruction issue slots in a given clock period. This allows instructions from alternate threads to take advantage of individual instruction execution opportunities presented by the normal ILP inefficiencies of single thread program execution. SMT can be thought of as equivalent to the airline practice of using standby passengers to fill seats that would have otherwise flown empty.
