Dankzij een flinke kerstflush van een van de DPC subteams stonden we gisteren weer met gemak op nummer 1, en hadden we zelfs bijna 3x zoveel blokjes als AnandTech!

Sir Abarth was zo aardig om een submit te doen over een nieuw artikel bij Sharky Extreme, waarin AMD's roadmap uitgebreid wordt besproken. De belangrijkste stappen die we binnenkort van AMD kunnen verwachten zijn de release van de Palomino en de 760MP chipset. De Palomino is een verbeterde Thunderbird die minder heet wordt en hogere kloksnelheden kan halen, maar zo rond het einde van het jaar als de 2GHz is bereikt zal AMD genoodzaakt zijn over te stappen op de 0.13 micron Thoroughbred:

Not much is known about the fifth generation core in the Athlon family other than it will be the first processor from AMD on a 130nm manufacturing process. Of course the switch from 180 to 130nm manufacturing means a smaller die (if no additional core logic is added), less power consumption (meaning less heat output), and greater scalability. Expect Thoroughbred to debut between 1.7 and 2GHz. For the time being, AMD estimates sampling will begin in Q4 2001 with production to commence during the first quarter of 2002.

Ook de Duron zal door blijven ontwikkelen, eerst als Morgan, een Duron core die hogere snelheden kan halen en later als 0.13 micron Appaloosa. De Duron zal echter niet zo snel omhoog gaan als de Athlon: in het begin van 2002 zal de budget-processor maximaal rond de 1,1GHz zitten.

In het artikel wordt ook ingegaan op de Hammer (K8) CPUs, chipsets en de positie van AMD in het algemeen. Uiteindelijk kunnen we concluderen dat AMD nog genoeg materiaal heeft om de strijd met Intel voort te zetten in het nieuwe jaar.

Bij Rizenet is een korte review verschenen van de Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 45. Deze familie harddisks heeft een maximale capaciteit van 46,1GB, een ATA100 interface, 7200rpm en een 2MB cache. Resultaat hiervan is een average seek time van 8,7ms. Maxtor maakt gebruik van "Silent Store technology", wat zorgt voor minder lawaai. Dit gaat echter wel ten koste van de prestaties. Als je toch al een rumoerige kast hebt, kun je deze functie dus beter uitzetten.

As we can see, ATA/100 doesn't really impact much other than the Read Burst speed. However, this is in no way saying this drive is slow - on the contrary! The DiamondMax Plus 45 destroys the compared ATA/66 drive in Sandra, both in ATA/66 and ATA/100 mode. Access times were a little off from Maxtor's claimed <9ms access times, but I've found HDTach to always report them a little off.

Maxtor has produced a stellar drive for both ATA/66 and ATA/100 owners. The scores on this drive were excellent both on ATA/66 channels and ATA/100 channels. Other excellent features include the noise reduction (possibly good for NetPC's and/or other OEM options) and a solid price. The DiamondMax Plus line is definitely a quality brand, and deserving of your hard earned dollars.

De jongens van Digit Life hebben de PowerColor Evil Kyro eens onder de loep genomen. De Kyro chip is de derde uit de PowerVR generatie van STMicroelectronics/Imagination Technologies. Qua prijs en prestaties moet de Evil Kyro concurreren met GeForce2 MX plankjes. Deze kaart beschikt over 32MB 6ns SDRAM en een AGP2X/4X interface. Zowel de core als het geheugen werken op 100MHz en zijn gesynchroniseerd. Het overklokken van de Kyro was niet zo succesvol; de kaart wilde niet verder dan 113MHz. Jammer dat de geheugen- en coreklok niet apart instelbaar zijn; 6ns geheugen draait namelijk standaard op 166MHz. De prestaties van de Evil Kyro blijven in alle benchmarks achter bij die van de GeForce2 MX. Verwacht wordt dat de Kyro dan ook geen directe concurrent voor nVidia wordt:

The company PowerColor has announced a completely new product both for users and for the company itself, it's somewhere unique considering both not wide availability and a special architecture of the KYRO. The card loses when fighting against its heaviest rival - NVIDIA GeForce2 MX in performance, but quite low price should help it to be called for: GeForce2 MX has just reached $90 and PowerColor EVIL KYRO costs much less now. But remember that KYRO-based cards lack for an integrated geometrical coprocessor (Hardware TCL).

Well, I could only say that these cards will be claimed for but they will hardly become popular. Considering the architecture I must notice that a 2-pipeline processor operating at 110 MHz nearly catches up with a 4-pipeline GeForce256 SDR (you all know that the GeForce2 MX is faster than the latter). This puts forward all advantages of tile architecture. However, it wasn't much beneficial for the KYRO. The only good is the fact that the card is on the same level as GeForce2 MX card. We will not probably see mass sales but I still hope for the price policy to get better and for the manufacturers to debug the drivers.

X-Bit Labs weet ons te melden dat de release van de KG7 AMD 760 borden van Abit pas in begin 2001 zal plaatsvinden (en dus niet meer dit jaar). De officiële aankondiging laat nu niet meer lang op zich wachten. De KG7 zal net als de KT7 ook beschikbaar komen een RAID uitvoering. De verdere specs zijn 3x DDR DIMM slots, 1x AGP, 6x PCI en een lief ISA slot. Daarnaast kunnen wij tweakers weer aan de slag met SoftMenu III.

Although ABIT showed DDR mainboards at COMDEX, they were all intended for OEMs and won't appear in retail. However, ABIT is also going to make retail DDR boards as well. They will be: KG7 and KG7-RAID. These two mainboards will be based on AMD-760 chipset and will be distinguished by an IDE RAID HPT370 controller, which will be installed on KG7-RAID. The preliminary specs of the boards, which we received from one of our sources, look as follows: 3 DDR DIMM slots, 1 AGP 4x, 6 PCI and 1 ISA slot. Of course, the boards will support SoftMenu III technology including the possibility to change the FSB frequency with 1MHz increments, clock multiplier, Vio and Vcore. ABIT will also use an active cooling solution to cool down the chipset North Bridge.

The mainboards will be announced in the nearest future and will appear in retail in the beginning of 2001. We think that ABIT does the right thing. They don't announce their AMD-760 mainboards in advance and don't have to explain why their products do not appear in retail, what the others do now.

Bij Socket A.com is een review verschenen van het FIC AD11 moederbord. Deze plank is gebaseerd op de AMD 761 north-bridge en VIA's 686B southbridge en heeft verder 5x PCI, 1x AGP en CNR en 2 DIMM sloten aan boord voor PC1600 of PC2100 DDR SDRAM. Verder kan er door middel van multiplier switches, 11 FSB settings en voltage manipulation het nodige tweakwerk verricht worden. In de test werd er gebruik gemaak van een 1,2GHz Athlon (266MHz bussnelheid) en een 256MB Crucial PC2100 CAS 2.5 DDR SDRAM reepje. De scores werden vergeleken met het Iwill KA266-R ALi MAGiK 1 bordje die doorgaans ongeveer even snel bleek te zijn. Aangezien deze AD11 één van de eerste beschikbare AMD 760 borden zal zijn mogen we volgens onderstaande conclusie best tevreden zijn :

The FIC AD11 is an excellent first shot at an AMD 760 based board. Excellent overclocking features combined with good performance and stability make this board very attractive. FIC has definitely come a long way in improving their board designs and features since the SD11, and the AD11 continues that progression.

There are a few improvements to the AD11 that would make it a near perfect board. Another dimm socket would be a great improvement. The AMD 760 does support more dimm sockets, but they are a bit more difficult to implement. Also more bus speed choices would be a nice option especially for overclockers. More room around the socket for larger heatsinks is another wish of mine.
