Louis-Paul Linssen schrijft: "Bij hardwareinfo.net is de SoundMan Xtrusio DSR-100 onder de loep genomen, een speakerset waarmee Logitech definitief door zou moeten breken in de speaker wereld. De speakerset bestaat uit 4 satellieten en een subwoofer. De satellieten hebben een vermogen van 12 W RMS en de subwoofer is goed voor 52 W RMS, dit bij een frequentiebereik tussen de 28 Hz en 20 kHz. De kwaliteit is niet verkeerd maar de prijs ligt net iets te hoog voor wat de set te bieden heeft.":

Logitech heeft een leuke set gemaakt met de Xtrusio DSR-100. Het geluid is prima en de (bouw)kwaliteit laat weinig te wensen over. De aansluitmogelijkheden zijn beperkt, maar voldoende. Het gebruik van de 4-channel jack als digitale input is een beetje vreemd omdat, voor zover bekend, de Sound Blaster 5.1 serie op dit moment de enige soundcard is die deze aansluiting heeft.

Jammer is dat Logitech een vierkanaals speakerset gemaakt heeft. Voor heel wat minder dan de adviesprijs van fl. 449,- kun je bijvoorbeeld ook de Creative DTT2200 kopen, die wél een zeskanaals set is. En voor 50 gulden extra heb je de Midiland S4 7100, die eveneens zeskanaals is, en ook nog eens een beter geluid heeft.

Onze conclusie is dus dat we zeer zeker tevreden zijn over de degelijkheid en de geluidskwaliteit van de nieuwe Logitech speakerset, alleen de prijs mag met een blik op de concurrentie een stuk lager!

Bij HardOCP is een review verscheven over het 8KTA3 moederbord van Epox gebaseerd op de KT133A chipset. De plank is in het bezit van de populaire 1/6/1 ISA/PCI/AGP layout. Ook zijn er 4 DIMM sloten aanwezig voor de geheugen- hongerige tweakers. De broodnodige instellingen om de multiplier, de FSB of het voltage te wijzigen zitten keurig in het BIOS ingebakken. Features dus die zonder problemen kunnen concurreren met bijvoorbeeld het Abit KT7A moederbord. De plank kon overigens zonder problemen stabiel lopen op een FSB van 150MHz DDR . Dit alles verdient volgens de reviewer de eerste HardOCP top pick award:

Not that you would care, but I have had more fun these last few days testing this board. The VIA KT133A chipset on the EPoX board has brought some avenues of excitement back to the OCers that wanted to go the AMD route like myself. We now have CPUs we are pushing to the limits - along with chipsets, memory sticks, and mainboards to boot. Tweaking out the 8KTA3 was kinda like living on the edge again. Yeah, I know, I need to get out more....

EPoX has done a bang-up job on the 8KTA3. This is the third KT133A board we have had the pleasure of testing, and I have to say it is certainly a board you will want to look at when and if you go to buy yourself an upgrade any time soon. The features are honed for the overclockers and tweakers out there. Outside of having a built-in bidet, there is not much more they could have done to make this board perfect for the hardware that is out there now.

[...] This is the first time that we have given out an award of any kind to a manufacturer for a product, but I think EPoX has certainly earned it with their 8KTA3. Now I want to see them keep the quality work as standard operating procedure.

Zoals je kan zien is er ook nog een handig diagnose systeem aanwezig om de BIOS post codes te laten zien (links onder) en is er nog ruimte op het PCB voor andere versies met RAID en/of twee BIOS chippies. Wel jammer dat de layout niet helemaal optimaal is...

Anthony Roberts van NeoSeeker heeft de Polk AMR90 speakerset eens onder de loep genomen en zijn bevindingen in deze review bekendgemaakt. De Polk AMR90 is een 4.1 surround systeem dat iets meer kost dan 100 dollar (235 gulden). Wat opviel aan de satellietspeakers waren kleine facing ports aan de achterkant. Hieruit komt een significante hoeveel lucht, waardoor een redelijke hoeveelheid boost wordt toegevoegd. De geluidskwaliteit was standaard wat van de specs te verwachten was. De reviewer was alleen niet blij met de hoge tonen. De speakerset werd beoordeeld met 79%:

The true strength of this system is its ability to exceed expectations, given its amazingly reasonable $109 MSRP. The system quite ably plays music, but the real treat is the fact that the low price is one of the lowest cost of entry contenders for quadraphonic audio in movies and games. This is a neutral sounding system that engages the listener, provided that listener isn’t expecting the guttural energy of a much more powerful system (like the Klipsch), or the high-end frequency reproduction from systems like the Monsoon MM-1000.

Op WebWereld is te lezen dat via een lek in de 'skins' van Media Player een hacker kan binnendringen in de computer van gebruikers. Dit kevertje is aan het licht gebracht door de Bulgaarse keverjager Georgi Guninski. Via dit gat zouden 'hackers' toegang hebben tot de harde schijf van gebruikers. Hoewel het slechts om 'read-only' toegang gaat, zou een hacker volgens Guninski wel de mogelijkheid hebben om bepaalde programma's uit te voeren. Hieronder een gedeelte uit het artikel:

"Guninski kwam er achter dat het mogelijk is een Java applet te plaatsen in de directory waar de 'skins' op de harde schijf opgeslagen zijn. Dit geeft een hacker toegang tot de harde schijf van de gebruiker", zegt Elias Levy, CTO van SecurityFocus.com in een reactie tegen CNet.

Een woordvoerder van Microsoft reageerde dat de gebruikers zich tegen deze java-bug kunnen beschermen door in de Media Player en de Internet Explorer aan te geven alleen maar veilige applets te accepteren. Als bij het downloaden blijkt dat een applet niet voorzien is van een veiligheidscode, wordt deze niet geïnstalleerd.

Het volk van GideonTech trakteert ons op een review van de Logitech MouseMan Wheel Optical. Opvallend aan deze muis is de vorm en de blauwe kleur. De buttons zijn lekker groot, zodat je niet meer kunt misklikken als je een iemand in je vizier hebt om hem te fraggen. Het scrollwielletje had wel wat groter gemogen, want het scrollen ging nogal moeizaam bij grote webpagina's. Het klikken op het scrollwielletje viel ook niet mee. Toch is men wel te spreken over deze muis:

Chipbakker Intel verwacht voor het eerste kwartaal van dit jaar een teruggang in de omzet van 15%. Afgelopen kwartaal werd nog een omzet behaald van 8,7 miljard dollar, 6% meer dan in dezelfde periode een jaar geleden. De verwachte teruggang in de omzet is volgens Intel te wijten aan de vertragende groei van de wereldeconomie. Hieronder een gedeelte uit de press release van Intel:

"This was a year of record annual revenue and earnings; yet, slowing economic conditions impacted fourth quarter growth and are causing near-term uncertainty," said Craig R. De mannen van Tech Extreme hebben een review gemaakt van de Voyetra-Turtle Beach Santa Cruz PCI geluidskaart. De kaart maakt gebruik van de CS4630 SoundFusion Digital Signal Processor. Deze kaart heeft advanced 3D positional Audio support, 2, 4 of 6-speaker Digital Surround Sound, acoustic Sound fields en een 8MB DLS MIDI wavetable synthesizer. Over het algemeen komen de specs aardig overeen met de Sound Blaster Live! serie. Over de geluidskwaliteit was men niet altijd even te spreken, maar al met al vinden ze het een goede kaart:

For $99, the Voyetra-Turtle Beach Santa Cruz sound card is a very good buy. This puppy offers support for all major 3D audio standards, includes mp3 hardware acceleration, (though its pretty much useless these days of 1Ghz+ systems), and the VersaJack will give you many options for any type of configuration you wish to run. While its 3D audio support in games might be a bit spotty, especially with EAX-enabled games, I’m sure Voyetra will be able to resolve these issues with future driver releases.

And therein lies one of the biggest problems with the Santa Cruz. The drivers are simply not as robust as they should be. Using the latest beta 4.63 drivers, I incurred into too many crashes and lock-ups when doing sound-related tasks. There are even issues between Audio Station 4 and the Santa Cruz Control Panel that need to be taken care of quickly. The fact that Windows 2000 and Windows Millennium drivers are not included on the shipping drivers CD doesn’t help matters either.

The software bundle also leaves something to be desired. For one thing, Voyetra doesn’t include any type of software DVD player, a bad omission considering that the card can support 6-channel analog audio with the use of a software DVD decoder that can output to the channels and decode AC-3 audio. Fortunately, Videologic offers WinDVD 2000 with 6-channel support that works great with the Santa Cruz\Sonic Fury, (the Sonic Fury is the same card as the Santa Cruz, Videologic just changed its name for distribution in Europe), but, you are forced to shell out more money for something that should have been included. Audio Station 4, while easy to use, simply omits some standard features that people might be used to from other media players, not to mention that it’s a bit too buggy for my tastes. If you are into mixing your own sound samples, you might extract some fun from Ejay Special Edition.

There are other sound cards competing at this same price range, including the Philips Acoustic Edge and the Sound Blaster Live! X-Gamer 5.1 and mp3+ 5.1. While the Santa Cruz is a solid addition to the PC sound market at this point, I would definitely wait for more robust drivers from Voyetra before picking up the card. Overall game support is great, meaning you will be able to enjoy games to their full potential with minimal fuzz, but once again, the current drivers do introduce problems with certain titles. If you are looking for a new sound card now and hate the Live! series from Creative, the Santa Cruz wouldn’t be a bad choice. But once again, I would wait for more mature drivers before making a decision

CNET meldt dat Divx, de populaire gehackte versie van het Microsoft MPEG4 codec, opensource gaat. Al sinds de release van het originele codec zijn de makers bezig aan de opvolger 'Divx Deux'. Op deze manier hopen ze hulp te krijgen van de opensource gemeenschap met het perfectioneren van de volgende generatie Divx.

Het door de makers opgerichte bedrijf Project Mayo wordt echter niet met open armen ontvangen door de filmindustrie. In combinatie met software als DeCSS kan Divx namelijk gebruikt worden om DVD films dermate te verkleinen dat downloaden over internet een kleine moeite is voor mensen met een redelijke kabelverbinding. Gevreesd wordt dat Divx Deux deze vorm van piraterij verergert:

"We've reached the point where we're comfortable opening it up to other developers," said Joe Bezdek, director of product definition for Project Mayo, the company created by the DivX project founders. "The goal with Open DivX is to achieve ubiquity on a wide variety of platforms and a wide variety of devices."

The Project Mayo programmers have ambitions well beyond their roots in hacker world. Bezdek said the developers hope to see companies and video creators use the freely licensed DivX technology instead of similar technologies by Microsoft or other companies. In the music world, open-source programmers are creating a new music format with ambitions similar to those Bezdek has for DivX.

De Personal Jukebox krijgt een opvolger, met de naam Treo. De Treo is één van de eerste op hard drive gebaseerde spelers van de tweede generatie. De Treo zal meerdere codecs supporten, zoals MP3, WMA, AAC, ePAC en programmeerbare firmware voor toekomstige formaten. Ook is er een functie toegevoegd om je playlists te beheren, zodat je meerdere playlists kunt hebben. Ook bezit het apparaatje een 5 band equalizer met Jazz, Latin, Flat, Rock en Dance instellingen. They also confirmed that the production model will be available in March 2001. The delay from the January launch date was due to last minute changes and fixes. It bottoms out at 20 hz which is more than adequate for sufficient bass.

Conclusion:

With a smaller size than the PJB, all of these great new features, and a new lower price ($399), this is going to be THE hard drive based player to buy. Not only THE hard drive player to buy, this is going to be THE MP3 player to beat for a LONG time. We will have a review of the pre-production unit in Februray.

Intel is van plan om de Pentium 4 sneller in te laten burgeren dan verwacht, aldus ZDNet. Eerder was door het bedrijf aangegeven dat ze dit jaar 14 miljoen Pentium 4 processors gingen leveren, nu is de verwachting 18 tot 20 miljoen. Op het eerste gezicht lijkt dit een positieve ontwikkeling, maar analysten zijn bang dat Intel van plan is flink wat winst in te leveren om de Pentium 4 populairder te maken. De extra capaciteit zou veroorzaakt zijn door een verminderde vraag naar computers in het algemeen. Verder zouden de hoger geklokte versies uitgesteld zijn:

The increase in Pentium 4 shipments is likely to be at least partly enabled by extra manufacturing capacity caused by the flagging PC market. Intel, along with the rest of the semiconductor industry, forecast high levels of demand in the second half of 2000.

[...] Intel then decided to devote the extra capacity to its already bullish plan, driving the Pentium 4 into the mainstream PC market by producing more Pentium 4 chips, as opposed to producing additional Pentium III chips or idling factories.

[...] Intel has stated publicly that it will offer a 2GHz Pentium 4 chip in the third quarter of this year. But sources say Intel originally told PC makers to expect the 2GHz chip in the second quarter. Over Iwill's DVD266-R moederbord is bij OCworkbench een press release te lezen. Dit is een dual Socket370 bord gebaseerd op de VIA Apollo Pro266 chipset. Het bord heeft een FSB van 133MHz en is voorzien van AGP, 5x PCI en ACR. De 4 DIMM sloten bieden verder plaats aan 4GB DDR SDRAM en net als op de KK266-R een IDE RAID controller van AMI toegevoegd. In een press release laat Plextor aan de wereld weten dat haar 16 speed CD-RW drive in februari op de markt zal komen. De drive is uitrust met een buffer van slechts 2MB, maar doormiddel van Burn-Proof technologie worden underruns opgevangen. De drive heeft een IDE interface, leest met 40 speed en schrijft op CD-RW schijfjes met een snelheid van 10 speed:

Wellicht is het zelf bouwen van een PC voor een groot aantal bezoekers alhier reeds gesneden koek. Maar voor wie dit nog nooit zelf gedaan heeft en graag een aardige stap-voor-stap handleiding (mèt illustraties) wil hebben is een bezoekje aan Tom's Hardware Guide zeker de moeite waard!

Tom doet uitgebreid uit de doeken hoe je een PC in elkaar knutselt, en meer nog - en da's ook voor de 'gevorderde' Tweaker interessant - hoe je de benodigde componenten uitkiest. En last but not least: ook het overclocken komt aan de orde! Tom kiest voor een systeem gebaseerd op een AMD TBird 800MHz, en bouwt dit stap voor stap uit tot een werkend systeem onder de noemer 'Highspeed luxury for little money' .

Our Tom's Hardware PC is a powerful machine for all applications: MPEG 4 encoding, video editing, 3D gaming or office applications - nobody else offers such quality for a mere $995. Putting together the PC requires about 60 minutes; software installation takes about the same time. The motherboard is quite versatile, allowing larger modifications of core voltage and clock multiplier.

Een aanbevelenswaardig verhaal voor eenieder die van plan is om zelf (weer) eens aan 't knutselen te slaan. Bovendien een goed voorbeeld van een behoorlijk doordachte configuratie, en dat is natuurlijk ook interessant om eens te bekijken! Tom roept dat 't hele systeem voor $995,- te bouwen is, dus dat is zeg maar zo'n 3000 Florijntjes, een heel 'normaal' bedrag voor een actuele PC, maar dan wèl eentje die 't één en ander kan!

Eén laatste advies: hou Tom's Hardware in de gaten, want dit verhaal gaat nog vervolgd worden - de volgende keer is de videokaart het hoofdonderwerp. Maar dat zal hier ongetwijfeld op tijd worden medegedeeld en samengevat. Thanks Elmbo voor de hint!

Deze muis is, naast gewoon muis, ook een handig apparaatje waarmee je je computer kan beveiligen door middel van je vingerafdruk. Zoals je op de foto hieronder kan zien zit daarvoor een scanner aan de zijkant van de mouse. De muis komt ook met software om je hele hardeschijf te encrypten en om al je wachtwoorden om te zetten in je vingerafdruk. Bij de reviewer bleek de muis prima te werken, wat natuurlijk wel handig is . Dus als je persé wilt dat alleen jij aan je PC kan komen, en je hebt nog ergens 129 dollar liggen is het een prima apparaat:
