Volgens onze vrienden bij iXBT Labs kunnen we 15 oktober (of misschien zelfs een week eerder) een tweetal nieuwe processors van AMD verwachten. Tegelijk met een prijsdaling van alle oudere modellen (die volgens een The Register al op 9 oktober moet gebeuren, zie deze newsposting) komen de 800MHz Duron en de 1,2GHz Thunderbird op de markt.

AMD blijft daarmee strak vasthouden aan haar strategie om elke 2 maanden een snellere processor uit te brengen, op 15 augustus werd namelijk de 1,1GHz Thunderbird geintroduceerd. iXBT is niet zo positief over de gevolgen hiervan voor Intel:

The only thing that could help Intel restore its popularity is the transfer to 0.13micron manufacturing technology, which is scheduled for Q2-Q3 2001. within this period Intel is expected to launch an enhanced Pentium 4 version, aka Northwood, which should be accompanied by the announcements of new DDR chipsets. As for AMD, in the meanwhile they cannot offer anything in response, because the company isn’t yet ready to transfer its production lines to 0.13 micron and the agreement with TSMC concerning placing orders at TSMC is currently negotiated. However, there is till enough time left and the situation may change drastically, especially bearing in mind that AMD has been working on 0.13 micron Mustang for quite a long time already.

PcDealer schrijft dat 3Com twee nieuwe Gigabit Ethernet NIC's heeft aangekondigd die gebruikmaken van normale CAT5 kabels in plaats van de gebruikelijke optische kabels. Het voordeel hiervan is dat men makkelijk en relatief goedkoop een 1000Mb netwerk kan aanleggen of een 10/100Mb netwerk kan upgraden. De twee netwerk- kaarten komen met een lijst interessante features en zijn geschikt voor 64bit 64MHz PCI sloten. De prijs voor de workstation kaart is 399 dollar, en voor de server smaak moet zelfs 799 dollar neergelegd worden. Voorlopig blijft Gigabit Ethernet dus voor de normale tweaker nog buiten bereik, maar met deze kaarten is het wel een stap dichterbij gekomen :

Thanks to the dedicated digital signal processing IC the images are captured at high speed without losing any detail. In single frame mode the G1 can capture Large/Fine mode images in less than two seconds. The autofocus and exposure is set within 0.7 seconds of pressing the shutter button and the image is captured within 0.07 seconds of pushing the shutter button all the way down from the halfway point. In continuous mode the G1 captures up to 10 Large/Fine JPEGs at a rate of 1.7fps with the LCD and flash off. Users can switch between record and playback modes in an instant, the lens remains extended unless you put it in the Off position for more than 0.8 seconds.

Exposure options abound with full AUTO mode or Program AE, shutter speed priority, aperture priority and full Manual or choose one of the Image Zone pre-programmed modes. ISO sensitivity is adjustable between 50, 100, 200, 400 or automatic. White balance can be automatic, one of five presets or manually customized. The focus can be automatic or manual. Auto exposure bracketing (AEB) captures three exposures, taken with a single shutter release, at stops over and under the targeted exposure. For that perfect exposure under not-so-perfect conditions you can switch to spot metering. A special noise reduction feature virtually eliminates digital "noise" for exposures of 1.3 seconds or longer.

Corel maakt op haar webpage bekend dat CorelDRAW voor linux nu beschikbaar is, het gaat hier om CorelDRAW versie 9. Hiermee loopt het linuxproduct bijna een versie achter op het windowsproduct, waarvan de releasedatum voor versie 10 is vastgesteld op 10 november (zie ook de aankondiging).

Sharky Extreme heeft sinds kort een review van de Gigabyte GA-7ZM online staan. Dit low-budget socket A moederbord heeft de beschikking over 3xPCI 1xAGP en 1xAMR. Je kan de 3 168-pins DIMM sockets vullen met in totaal 1,5 GB geheugen. Verder nog de gebruikelijke stuff als IDE, USB, etc die je op elk moederbord weer terugvindt. Over het overklokken met behulp van dit moederbord schrijft Sharky:

By no means is the 7ZM an overclocker's motherboard. Sporting support for a few FSB settings (95/100/105/110/113/115/117/133MHz), the overclocking enthusiast looking to take their Duron to a new level of performance should look towards the A7V or KT7. EasyTune III did not offer any better overclocking results than the DIP switches, and we were only able to take out Duron 700 to 735MHz.

Although we were satisfied with the available memory and AGP options in the BIOS, enthusiasts looking to seriously tweak their Duron or Thunderbird will want to look elsewhere for a more capable overclocking solution.

Bij PC Scoop staat een interessant stukje van gastschrijver NKoldman. Hij heeft een methode ontdekt om alle versies van Windows van 95 tot en met Millenium Edition een stuk sneller te laten lopen. Het vreemde van dit verhaal is dat de methode die hij uitlegt simpelweg bestaat uit het installeren van een aantal drivers die gewoon op de Windows cd te vinden zijn.

In het artikel laat men een theorie doorschemeren waarom deze drivers niet tijdens de installatie meegekopieerd zouden worden. Microsoft zou dat bewust niet doen, zodat iemand met een MCSE papiertje (die deze 'truc' tijdens zijn opleiding te horen krijgt), snel en makkelijk een systeem een stuk sneller zou kunnen maken.

Ok this where you want to pay attention if you look at the picture above you will see the highlighted driver C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\VMM32VXD.(vmouse.vxd) The (......) around the driver is telling you that windows is looking for that driver and can not find it so it is using a default driver instead of the one windows is wanting .This in turn can slow your system down and cause errors in some apps and functions of your system.[break]En zo hoort het eruit te zien na de behandeling:[/break] [break] Update: De waarheid van dit artikel blijkt nogal een punt van discussie te zijn, er zijn een aantal mensen en sites die er heilig in geloven, en er is zelfs een programma om het werk voor je te doen. Mensen die hun drivers al hebben vervangen hoeven zich absoluut geen zorgen te maken, maar of ze er profijt van zullen hebben is te betwijfelen.

The Register schrijft in dit bericht dat Rambus haar patent claims nu ook richting meerdere processorbakkers afvuurt. Het bedrijf zit nu met AMD en Transmeta in knoop over uitgegeven patenten in 1996. Deze zouden namelijk ook betrekking hebben op DDR SDRAM, een geheugen standaard die zoals je weet binnenkort zal worden gebruikt voor de desktopmarkt. Mochten AMD en Transmeta de claims afwijzen dan zal ook deze zaak voor de rechter uitgevochten worden:

The company wants to get the microprocessor duo to acknowledge that patents, granted in 1996, cover DDR (Double-Data Rate) SDRAM, a rival technology to its own Direct RDRAM.

The unspoken threat is that Rambus will sue these companies -if they reject its claims. Rambus is already sueing a clutch of DRAM makers - Micron, Infineon and Hyundai - to stake its claims to synchronous interface patents. Micron and Hyundai are fighting back with counter-claims of their own. But out of the litigation jungle appears to be Hitachi, which last week folded its DRAM business with NEC into a new concern, Elpida.

[...] This is hardly a strategy to win friends and influence people, but then it has little choice. Unless it establishes "ownership" of DDR-SDRAM, it's own Direct RDRAM could end up as little more than an interesting footnote in the history of the computer industry.

If it succeeds in law, the company gains new royalties -from DDR-SDRAM, while increasing unit prices of the technology. This will make Direct RDRAM more attractive as a price/perfomance step upgrade (as opposed to a big leap upwards).
