Denise bezorgde ons dit bericht waarin uitgelegd wordt waarom de Pentium III Coppermines niet zo zuinig zijn als eerste de bedoeling was. Het schijnt dat door de toepassing van het 0.18 micron productieproces verschillende energiebesparende voorzieningen geschrapt dienden te worden. Hier de soep:

De Pentium III Coppermine-chips voor desktopsystemen blijken echter niet voorzien van energiebesparende mogelijkheden. Die processoren zouden functies hebben voor diverse varianten van de reeds bekende 'slaapstand'. Deze zijn Autohalt, Stop-grant, Sleep en Deepsleep. Uit een online-discussieforum van Intel zelf blijkt dat de Sleep- en Deepsleep-standen voor de Pentium III zijn geschrapt. Volgens ingenieurs van de chipfabrikant is de overstap van 0,25 naar 0,18 micron transistorbreedte op de processor de oorzaak hiervan. Die dunnere transistor-maat maakt de gehele chip energiezuiniger, maar vergroot tegelijkertijd de 'lekkage' van elektrische signalen. De twee geschrapte spaarstanden zouden daardoor zeer moeilijk te bereiken zijn.

Bij GamePC kun je een review lezen van Abit's moederbordje gebaseerd op de VIA Apollo Pro 133 chipset, de VA6. Uit eerdere reviews leerden we al dat de geheugen en AGP performance duidelijk achter blijft bij de BX chipset. GamePC trekt dezelfde conclusie voor ons:

We see a healthy lead for the BX chipset in most of our benchmarks, especially in lower resolutions where the benchmarks is not limited by the fillrate on the video card. As we edge into the 1280x1024 and 1600x1200 Quake 3 benchmarks, we see the benchmarks evening out as we're tapping the top fillrate of the GeForce DDR card. It's good that the VIA can keep up with the BX on these levels, but it still doesn't make up for the fact that VIA's brand new chipset is getting swiftly smacked by Intel's year old BX chipset.

It all comes down to what you're willing to pay on a price/performance scale. You'll pay a little less by buying a VIA PC-133 motherboard, but you'll get less overall performance than a BX board. Of course, if you've just bought one of Intel's new Coppermine EB processors that runs at 133 MHz FSB natively, many people will go to the VIA chipset instead of going to Intel's I820 chipset with pricey Rambus modules. Other than the EB processors, there is really no reason to vouch for VIA over the BX. Business workers may not even see a performance difference between BX and VIA, but gamers will surely take note.

De website van het noodlijdende softwarebedrijf Baan is waarschijnlijk afgelopen maandag gekraakt. Op de site stond het bericht dat het bedrijf een investering van 75 miljoen dollar heeft ontvangen van particuliere investeringsgroepen. Een woordvoerder van Baan ontkent het bericht en sluit niet uit dat een belegger de site heeft gekraakt om zo de beurskoers op te krikken. De aandelenkoers ging vandaag rond 16 uur 3,30% hoger tot 7,19 euro.

Hehe...zelfs beurskoersen worden nu al overgeklokt..

BoomGames Interactive verrijkt ons leven met een review van de TerraTec XLerate Pro, een van de vele Aureal Vortex II geluidskaartjes met A3D2.0 ondersteuning. Hieronder een gedeelte:

The XLerate Pro is certainly a nice card, and has the added benefit of housing a digital optical output port which seems dominant in today's stereo equipment. The board went rock stable till 125/173, but after that it kept going down. A little bit higher clock (130) and small artifacts would appear, at 135 it completely went down. At 175 Mhz memory, severe artifacts were noticeable. Yes, each extra clock added to the fill rate so the board does highly improve with overclocking. The card had acceptable overclocking capabilities and worked pretty good all around. We do not in any way promote overclocking though, if you do not know what you are doing, or you are the slightest bit uncomfortable, don’t do it!

Nederland zal dankzij het Gigaport project van SURFnet binnenkort over het snelste stukje internet ter wereld beschikken (het werd eens een keer tijd, bovendien: dit kleine klote landje is in vergelijking met afstanden in de VS net een LAN ). SURFnet heeft een backbone met snelheden van maar liefst 80Gigabit/s in de planning, waar klanten een aansluiting van maximaal 20Gbit/s op kunnen krijgen (thanks Jargo voor de tip):

Voor het GigaPort-project zal continu een hoogwaardige nationale infrastructuur beschikbaar zijn. In eerste instantie is dit het SURFnet4-netwerk. In drie fasen zal een nieuwe infrastructuur, de SURFnet5-backbone, worden opgebouwd.

SURFnet5 neemt uiteindelijk de taken van SURFnet4 over. SURFnet5 zal een state-of-the-art netwerk worden waarmee Nederland internationaal gezien een vooraanstaande positie verkrijgt bij de aanleg van de elektronische snelweg. De capaciteiten van de nieuwe SURFnet5-backbone, zal geleidelijk groeien naar een snelheid van 80 Gigabit per seconde (Gbit/s) in het jaar 2002. Dit is honderd maal de capaciteit van het huidige SURFnet4-netwerk. Anand heeft het vierde deel van z'n Athlon Buyer's Guide online gezet. In part IV komt het probleem met de voedingen aan bod: vooral oudere 0,25micron Athlons vereisten vanwege hun hoge energieverbruik een zware power supply (dank aan AVL voor het linkje):

The original Athlon 650 requires the most power, but it looks like AMD is making an active effort to reduce the amount of power used by the Athlon CPUs. Model 2 (0.18-micron the K75 core) of the Athlon does seem to decrease the amount of power used by the Athlon significantly, but it's still at the top of the charts, higher than most of the competitors. Only the old 0.35-micron Pentium II 300 consumes more power than most of the Model 2 Athlons (with the exception of the Athlon 800) at 43W.

Voor het heftige werk heeft Hitachi een servertje in de planning die is voorzien van maar liefst 32 Itanium processors. Het systeem krijgt waarschijnlijk 64Mb cache memory en weet dankzij 32 PC133 DIMM slots ook de meest dwaze upgraders in hun behoeften te bevredigen (thanks McMiGHtY voor de tip):

By using its own chip set and mainframe multiprocessing schemes, Hitachi will be able to deploy eight- and 32-way Itanium systems several months after the first standard two- and four-way systems start shipping, company officials here said.

The hallmark of the Hitachi system is its large, hierarchical cache memory scheme. For each symmetric-multiprocessing (SMP) node, which contains four Itanium processors, Hitachi is leaning toward using as much as 64 Mbytes of cache, though 32 Mbytes is also being considered, said Toshihiro Tsukishima, marketing manager for the platform systems planning department at Hitachi's Enterprise Server Division (Ebina-shi, Japan).

"We believe using a huge cache memory outside the CPU will help speed the efficiency of applications," he said. "Without such a large cache, we'd have a long delay for data coming from main memory."

The level-three cache memory will send data to two memory controllers governing a bank of main memory at each node. For main memory, Hitachi will use a series of 1-Gbyte dual in-line memory modules consisting of 133-MHz SDRAMs, also known as PC133 SDRAMs. There will be a total of 32 DIMM slots — or 32 Gbytes of storage capacity — for each node.

Each node within the multiple-SMP scheme will have a "node controller" to manage the flow of data among the Itanium processors, cache, PCI bridge chips and a high-speed crossbar switch that ties together as many as eight nodes. Each of these controllers has an external tag memory, which helps monitor and control the data moving into the L3 cache.

Since we were trying to get the Viper II on the store shelves for Christmas, we decided to defer a couple of months on the T&L driver changes and focus on doing a more thorough job of testing and optimizing the driver functionality most important for current applications, like Quake3 and Unreal Tournament. By and large, none of these applications are much affected by hardware-accelerated geometry, and that can be seen by the great frame rates we're achieving now. That's not to say that we did all this work on T&L and now we're saying, "never mind, that was a mistake". You certainly will need it as applications evolve to take advantage of it and we'd like to get support out there as soon as we're able.

The plan is to release drivers this quarter that will support T&L along with other optimizations and any needed bug fixes.

In all cases, a list of customers and all their personal information was connected to the Internet and either was not password-protected or the password was viewable directly from the Web site.

Credit card theft, a problem long lurking in the background of Internet commerce, leaped to the top of consumers' minds earlier this month when a computer intruder calling himself Maxus was able to break into CD Universe's database of user credit cards. There's still speculation about how he did it.

Matrox Users heeft weer wat geruchten bij elkaar geharkt, onder andere over hun nieuwe video editing kaart, de RT2000, de G450 en een nieuwe chip, die de veelbelovende titel G800 meekrijgt:

For those of you waiting eagerly with $1200 in hand for the Matrox RT2000 it appears you will have to wait a little longer. Apparently the RT2000 drivers failed the Adobe Premiere acceptance tests and so will have to be fixed up and retested. If all goes well we should see a February release of the Matrox RT2000.

It looks like Matrox are going to leapfrog ahead to the G800 for their next generation chip which will power several different graphics boards including multiple processors versions. The G800 will have full hardware T&L built around DirectX8 and will ship in late summer. Matrox's next release the G450 will include it's own T&L support but this will be hardware transform with lighting done in software. Look for a probable springtime release on that one.

Microsoft lijkt er met de benoeming van Generaal Steve^3 (niet te verwarren met de twee appelmannen) nog harder tegenaan te gaan dan ooit tevoren. Meneer Ballmer heeft absoluut geen trek in een Microsoft split-up en is volgens Nu.nl qua persoonlijkheid vrijwel het tegenovergestelde van uncle Bill:

Met de benoeming van Steve Ballmer als de nieuwe topman van Microsoft krijgt dit concern een totaal ander boegbeeld. Het bedrijf zal eerder meer dan minder strijdlustig worden. Hij is mordicus tegen opsplitsing van Microsoft. Dit mogelijke scenario noemt hij roekeloos.

Windows98 Central, onderdeel van het AnandTech imperium, heeft het eerste deel van hun Windows 95 4th edition preview online geparkeerd. Dramatische verbeteringen lijkt Millennium niet te brengen: het draait nog steeds op de fundamenteel brakke Win9x kernel, wat 'm IMHO alleen bruikbaar maakt als tweede (games) OS naast 2000, NT, Linux of iets anders dat wel stabiel draait. AVL stuurde een linkje richting K7Core, een errug handige site met een database van de Athlon types, hun weeknummers en de core waarop zij gebaseerd zijn. Onder de 500MHz Athlon's blijken zich bijvoorbeeld erg veel exemplaren te bevinden met een 650MHz core, waarvan sommigen kloksnelheden van meer dan 850MHz halen. Erg handige info voor overklokkers die op zoek zijn naar een prettig meewerkende Athlon.

The Sunday Times schrijft dat een groep Britse hackers wandeling heeft gehouden in de computersystemen van zeker twaalf grote multinationals. De hackers wisten vertrouwelijke informatie weg te grabben en eisen nu bedragen tot 30 miljoen gulden. Hier het ANP nieuwsbericht van News Planet (thanks boer Krelis voor de tip):

Computerdeskundigen noemen het tot dusverre de ernstigste aanslag op de veiligheid van de ondernemingen in Groot-Brittannië. De onderneming Visa heeft afgelopen week toegegeven dat ze is gechanteerd. Hackers hebben een groot bedrag geëist. De inbraak was in juli en Visa heeft volgens een woordvoerder aangifte gedaan bij Scotland Yard en de Amerikaanse federale recherche, FBI. Van eisers is niets meer vernomen.

De misdadigers hebben codes bemachtigd die de sleutel vormen voor de programmeringen van de onderneming. Ze hebben gedreigd het systeem daarmee te verwoesten. Als dat op een dag zou gebeuren, verliest Visa tientallen miljoenen guldens. De firma handelt 3 triljoen gulden per jaar af voor 800 miljoen houders van creditcards.

Visa heeft extra beveiligingen ingesteld, maar is er niet gerust op. Scotland Yard heeft inmiddels notoire hackers ondervraagd, onder wie een 20-jarige jongeman in het Noord-Schots dorpje Hopeman. Die heeft inmiddels met Visa afgesproken niets tegen de pers te zeggen. Zijn computers zijn in beslaggenomen, maar hij is voorzover bekend niet aangeklaagd.

Slashdot meldt dat er een code freeze is afgekondigd over FreeBSD release 4.0. In de FreeBSD mailinglists lijkt er nog geen melding van gemaakt te worden, daarom de info direkt van /.:

FreeBSD has now entered code freeze for the up and coming 4.0 release. In the words of Jordan Hubbard, the release engineer:

"The code freeze will last for 15 days, during which time the 4.0 snapshot server (current.freebsd.org) will be cranking out its daily snapshots (and, in the last half of the release cycle, ISO images as well)".

4.0 is the first release from the latest FreeBSD -current development branch. Work also continues on the 3.x -stable branch.

AMD Zone schreef een review van de revisie 1.04 Asus K7M plank. Dit bord heeft ondersteuning voor busspeeds van 90, 95, 100-125, 133, 140 en 150MHz en bleek met een Athlon 600 stabiel te werken op busspeeds tot 112MHz. Verder doet de K7M aan voltage tweaking, wat 'm volgens AMD Zone een ideale plank voor overklokkers maakt:

This is where the Asus K7M can not be matched. The K7M is the only board that allows for overclocking the Athlon without modifying the processor in some form. It has the ability to not only choose the memory bus speed in the bios, but to also modify the core voltage and the i/o voltage via jumpers on the board. Voltages from 1.3 to 2.05 in increments of .1 can be chosen. I/O voltages of 3.31, 3.4 and 3.56 are selectable. The memory bus settings include 90, 95, 100-125, 133, 140 and 150MHz. I was able to get an Athlon 600 up to 672MHz with the 112MHz memory bus speed. I could push it higher, but this was as far as it would go and remain stable in Windows.

Tech Report heeft een artikel gepost over het Athlon L2 cache tweak proggie van H. Oda, de man achter SoftFSB en WCPUID. Het programma is ideaal als aanvulling op een GFD, aangezien de L2 cache divider niet via de Gold Fingers aangepast kan worden. Op dit moment wordt het proggie nog niet gedistribueerd, maar de beta versie die Tech Report in handen kreeg bleek al prima te werken (thanks hjs voor de tip):

Now comes the big question: How useful is this program? After all, there's one big hitch. This program adjusts the L2 cache speed in the operating system, but the system has to boot before that can happen. A system with an L2 cache that's flaky at (relatively) higher frequencies isn't likely to boot into the OS successfully.

As Dave at ComputerNerd pointed out to me, it might be possible to boost the CPU clock after booting the system. How? SoftFSB, of course, which could raise the front-side bus frequency (and thus the CPU frequency) after WCPUA2 does its magic. Using a .25-micron Athlon 500 overclocked to 700MHz, I was indeed able to set the L2 cache divisor to 2/5 and raise the FSB speed to 110MHz (or 220MHz DDR). The system ran briefly at 770MHz, then crashed. Ah, the joys of extreme overclocking.

De multiplier slider werkt op dit moment overigens nog niet.

Intel, Micron, NEC, Samsung, Hyundai and Infineon said yesterday they will work to produce a high end form of memory that will see PC platforms right from 2003 onwards.

But Rambus Ink, formerly Intel's closest memory partner, and intended to provide such a platform for the future, has not been invited to the memory platform.

At a press conference in Seoul yesterday, the six companies above put out a joint press statement to "cooperatively develop a high performance DRAM technology" for 2003 and beyond.

The idea of the initiative is to produce a memory standard for architecture, electrical and physical design, together with an infrastructure needed for the technology.

Specifications will be made available to all interested parties, although no details were given as to whether licence fees will be exacted from others for the privilege of participating in the initiative.

Koen van Hardwareinfo.net heeft een review van de Asus P3C 2000 i820+SDRAM plank online gezet. Naast de gangbare Quake3, Winstone en Winbench tests heeft Koen een aantal low-level geheugen benchmarks gedraaid, waaruit duidelijk naar voren komt dat de memory controller hub van de i820 een dramatische invloed heeft op de performance van het bord:

In de eerste pagina’s hebben we kunnen lezen dat de nieuwe 820 chipset van Intel interessante vernieuwingen brengt: 133 MHz FSB, AGP 4X/PRO, Ultra ATA/66, noem maar op. De performance bij gebruikmaking van SD-Ram valt mij echter zwaar tegen. In Quake 3 soms bijna meer dan 10 frames per seconde trager ten opzichte van de BX chipset met dezelfde CPU kan bij mij echt niet door de beugel. Het blijkt dat we op het RD-Ram moeten wachten om echt het beste uit de 820 chipset te halen. Hoewel de P3C2000 van ASUS een zeer verzorgd moederbord is, missen de huidige 820-chipset met SD-Ram moederborden vrijwel iedere doelgroep. Celeron gebruikers moeten zowiezo afhaken, aangezien er voor hun CPU helemaal geen ondersteuning meer is. Het blijkt dat Pentium III’s met een 100 MHz FSB zich veel beter thuis voelen op een BX moederbord. Vooral omdat de BX moederborden al zolang in de running zijn en de enorme stabiliteit daarvan al lang bewezen is, lijkt me een BX moederbord op dit moment nog steeds een betere keuze.

BrowserWatch heeft een artikel gepost over de status van Mozilla / Netscape 5. De info is afkomstig uit een mailtje van een Netscape developer en geeft een interessante kijk op de ontwikkelingen die daar nu gaande zijn. Op dit moment staat Milestone 13 voor de deur, waarin nog 800 bekende bugs gefixt moeten worden:

We all share the larger goal of shipping a product. Toward that end, the step we must take before doing so is to create and ship an alpha, or a beta. Mozilla is talking about the possibility of having M13 act as an alpha. Within Netscape, we are now talking about making M14 the basis of either an alpha or beta release of some sort. The details are still being decided, but the near term goal at Netscape is clear: To ship a pre-release variant of Seamonkey.

In focusing on this potential Netscape release, managers and engineers have been aggressively triaging their bugs into target fix versions of M13 and M14. The goal is to get anything out of our way that is not critical to the release, and to focus on all gathering together at M14 with an alpha/beta quality product.

The intent is for M13 to freeze (for regression fixing) on midnight 1/17/2000. We expect that the regression work will take less than a week if we can! ! hit that date with darn near zero M13 bugs. You should all expect to see a lot of fixes, and retargetting going on this week as we work towards this first goal.

The Register meldt dat de aandelen AMD door de 40 dollar barrière zijn gebroken, nadat een grote investeerder in één keer 8 miljoen aandelen binnen harkte. Intel deed het ondertussen ook niet slecht: dankzij de positieve financiële resultaten, die vorige week werden aangekondigd, ondergingen de Intel aandelen een stijging van maar liefst 13%:

A Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) filing earlier this week showed that AMD stock has become hotter than fire, as yesterday its share price broke the $40 barrier.

The filing, on a form SC13G, showed that on the 12th of January last, Friess Associates Inc, based in Jackson, Wyoming, bought 7,969,000 shares in the chip company. Friess Associates is an investment adviser.

[...] AMD's share price was around the $35 mark on the 12th of January. Its low point, in the last 52 weeks, was around $14 last April, but for months it rumbled along at $16, during the period it was launching its Athlon (K7) microprocessor. AMD reports its quarterly earnings next week.

Intel's share price shot up by $12 yesterday to close at over $103 on Wall Street, a rise of over 13 per cent, following a better than expected Q4.

So, does this $20 mouse pad live up to the high dollar price tag and all the hype? I can honestly say 'yes'. Using a standard Microsoft Intellimouse, I noticed significantly less mouse hangs and jerks that with the cloth mouse I used before it. Even a dirty mouse (which this Intellimouse was) was able to slide along with little or no drawbacks. Another good point to mention is that the Large Attack Pad makes a great mouse pad for users of the Intelli-Eye technology mice, such as the Intellimouse Explorer. The black surface, with the many bumps and grooves, makes picking up differences in the terrain an easy task for the 'eye' in these mice.

Alles werd getest, van een fossiele Asus V3000 (nVidia Riva128) tot en met een gloednieuwe Asus V6600. Erg handige info wanneer je bijv. een TNT, TNT2 Ultra en GeForce met elkaar wilt vergelijken.

"The code freeze for the next Debian release, code named "potato", has begun", says Richard Braakman, current Debian Release Manager. He expects the freeze process to take about two months.

Until the new version is released, there will be three distributions available on our servers: `stable', `frozen', and the new `unstable'.

"The new `unstable' distribution, code named »woody«[1], was created today", continues Richard. The `frozen' and `unstable' distributions start out with the same set of packages. While `unstable' will be updated rapidly, `frozen' will have only bugfixes applied in preparation for its release.
