Dan's Data heeft een review klaarliggen van de Sony CPD-G400 19" monitor met het platte Trinitron beeldbuis. Hoewel het platte beeld erg mooi is heeft het wel als nadeel dat er (soms) 2 horizontale stabiliteits lijntjes zichtbaar zijn (zie plaatje).

There are aperture grille monitors that don't have the shadow lines - LG Electronics' Flatron screens have a differently tensioned mask that needs no support wires. But if you buy a Sony, you get the stripes.

Some people loathe damper wire shadows with all their hearts, and would never consider buying a monitor that had them. Some people are a bit annoyed by them, but it fades. And some people never notice them at all - though, now that you've read this, you probably will!

If you don't notice the shadows in the store but do notice them at home and decide they irk you, though, you'll be in trouble. Take a long hard look at any Trinitron or Diamondtron monitor (or television, for that matter) before you buy it, and see whether you find the shadows acceptable.

Heb je geen last van deze lijntjes is dit een goede keus. Anders moet je toch eens naar de LG 915FT Flatron kijken.

In mijn P3C2000 review van deze week heb ik al duidelijk laten merken dat ik niet echt tevreden was over het nieuwe bord van ASUS. Het bord was verre van stabiel en het lukte mij niet eens om Windows op te starten met een SD-Ram kloksnelheid van 100 MHz. De performance bij 75 MHz SD-Ram klok was helaas erg triest.

Mede dankzij mijn gewaarde collega van de Computer!Totaal, Frank Everaardt, kwam ik er achter dat dit wel eens een stroom-probleem kon zijn. Hij had namelijk bij zijn test-bord dezelfde problemen. Na veel verschillende geheugen modules te hebben geprobeerd plaatste hij voor de grap eens een oude S3 Virge PCI videokaart en toen werkte het bord wel redelijk stabiel.

Aangezien ik van veel mensen reacties kreeg over mijn artikel over de P3C2000, aangezien zij maar niet geloofden dat het product echt niet 100% stabiel was, heb ik vandaag het bord maar eens een tweede kans gegeven. Ik heb een ander P3C2000 bord uit een andere lichting geprobeerd en hierop de SD-Ram frequency op 100 MHz gezet (precies zoals we het willen hebben) en heirop een heel leger videokaarten geprobeerd.

Onder de getest videokaarten zitten: Een Guillemot 3D Prophet (GeForce), een Creative 3D Blaster Annihilator (GeForce), een Diamond Viper II (S3 Savage 2000), een Matrox G400 32MB Dual Head, een Diamond Viper V770 en V770 Ultra (TNT2 / TNT2 Ultra), een Creative 3D Blaster Savage 4 (S3 Savage 4) en zeker niet te vergeten een ASUS V3800 (TNT2) een ASUS V6600 Pure (GeForce).

Van al deze kaarten was het met met slechts één kaart maar mogelijk om de 3D Mark 2000 test zonder foutmeldingen e.d. volledig af te ronden. Verbazingwekkend vond ik het ook nog eens dat deze kaart de Diamond Viper II (S3 Savage 2000) was, tot op heden zelf ook niet echt bekend als het meest stabiele product. Dus zelfs met de twee ASUS kaarten was het bord niet stabiel: dan vraag ik mij op mijn beurt af hoe ASUS het bord uberhaupt getest heeft.

Vreemd is dat een ASUS P3C-E (met RIMM's) met RIMM->DIMM converter wél stabiel schijnt te functioneren. Ook schijnen er met de meeste 820 moederborden van andere fabrikanten ook geen problemen te zijn (zij het dat de performance natuurlijk nog steeds ietwat lager ligt dan een BX-moederbord).

Iedereen mag zijn eigen conclusie uit dit verhaal trekken. Al heb ik een aantal email gekregen van mensen die het niet eens met me waren, ik vind de P3C2000 tot nu toe absoluut geen stabiel moederbord. Terwijl ik in de review ervan eerst Intel de schuld van de problemen gaf, lijkt het toch deze keer een probleem van ASUS te zijn. Erg jammer, want juist van een merk als ASUS zou je dit soort zaken niet verwachten.

Zodra ik via een of andere weg een goed werkend P3C2000 moederbord krijg toegestuurd, zij het van ASUS direct, zij het van een distributeur, zij het van weet ik wie, dan neem ik uiteraard graag dit standpunt terug. Het lijkt me op dit moment alleen uiterst nuttig om mijn ervaring met het bord met jullie allen te delen, zodat niemand voor onaangename verassingen komt te staan.

Op en aanmerkingen graag hier als reactie. Ik ben erg benieuwd wat de ervaringen van anderen met dit moederbord zijn!

Finally, depending on whether you would spend the extra dollars on these features, the Erazors are just about as good as any other GeForce cards out there. I would not hesitate to recommend these to anyone, but one thing is for sure: If you have S$100 extra to spare, get a DDR over the SDR!

Reliable sources have told The Register that AMD will release an 850MHz Athlon processor in mid-February, just in time to put a damper on Intel's up-and-coming Developer Forum.

The AMD product, which will be available in volume shortly after the announcement, is likely to force Intel to up the ante. Intel may well do so during the week of the Developer Forum, which The Register is attending.

Currently, both Intel and AMD are both selling 800MHz versions of their Pentium III and Athlon processors. The Intel Coppermine parts are beginning to arrive in quantities, the company said when it announced its financial results last week.

The 850MHz Athlon that AMD will announce shows that the firm is making the running in the clock speed wars.

Sources in both the channel and at PC manufacturers have repeatedly told The Register that AMD is capable of rolling out the big one -- the 1GHz Athlon -- at a time of its own choosing.

According to one source, AMD has already successfully produced 1GHz Athlons, and is just biding its time.

Intel's official roadmap is still positing a 1GHz IA-32 microprocessor the second half of this year.

Volgens een onderzoek van Nielsen/Netratings groeit het aantal vrouwen op het web gestaag. Al meer dan 47% van de gebruikers in de VS zijn volgens metingen van het onderzoeksbureau vrouwen. Tijdens de kerstdagen steeg het percentage zelfs tot 50%. Volgens Nelsen kwam dit door dat veel vrouwen inkopen deden op het Internet.

Het aantal gebruikers dat in de VS een internetaanluiting had, steeg tussen februari en december 1999 van 59 miljoen naar 119 miljoen aansluitingen.

Ook het aantal minuten on line nam vorig jaar met maar liefst 10,9% toe, Gemiddeld zijn Amerikanen nu 8 uur en 17 minuten per maand on line. Het aantal unieke sites dat bezocht werd nam echter af met 40%, en per persoon worden gemiddeld 9 sites bezocht. De hoeveelheid pageviews nam met 68% toe. Kon het effe niet laten

Bij 3D Unlimited ligt een review klaar van de Razer Boomslang 2000, een erg exotisch gevormde gaming muis. Hieronder een hap uit de conclusie:

Karna’s Razer Boomslang 2000 does live up to advertised performance in every aspect. However most people interviewed thought $99.99 was too much for a 2000 dpi mouse even with the fourth button and on-the-fly-scrolling. Overall, I highly recommend the 2000 model or for $69.99 the1000, the difference being dpi resolution. Though we’ve mainly focused on the gaming use, this mouse is perfect for users who modify and manipulate photographs or work with CAD (Computer Aided Design and Drafting). We’ve found almost no flaws with exception of the inability to use PS/2 with the Dell. As for the cons, not be able to use both thumb buttons is the only minor flaw found. Perhaps in the future drivers will be released enabling you to use both buttons along with the ‘advanced system’ upgrade that is coming soon. Good news for MAC and Linux users is that they are currently working on driver sets for MAC and the Linux version will follow right behind. As for upcoming products from Karna’s we’ll all have to wait for an update at this year at E3 coming this May in LA.

Mitnick leaves a federal prison in California on Jan. 21 after serving five years for fraud convictions related to hacking into the computer systems of companies including Sun Microsystems, Motorola, and Qualcomm.

He believes what he did was"a gross invasion of privacy" but not stealing. "I was an accomplished computer trespasser. I don't consider myself a thief," he tells an incredulous Bradley, who counters that it was stealing. "I copied without permission," retorts Mitnick.

Another part of Mitnick's rationale is that it was all for fun and not profit. "I saw myself as an electronic joy rider," he says about the dozens of computer break-ins he perpetrated on some of the world's most secure computer systems. "I was like James Bond behind the computer," says Mitnick. "I was just having a blast."

Part of the "blast" was how easy it was and, sometimes, how loaded with irony. Exploiting a flaw in the computer system of Novell, the computer software design company, enabled Mitnick to breech the company's security computer fire wall in "a few minutes," he says. Ik kreeg deze interessante mailing van Klein Informatica. Intel en AMD zullen zoals bekend komende maandag prijsverlagingen doorvoeren, met als gevolg sterk wijzigende processorprijzen gedurende de komende weken. Tevens gaan de geheugenprijzen weer omhoog:

Aanstaande maandag gaan de prijzen van Intel en AMD processors omlaag. Wij hebben echter zojuist vernomen dat Intel vanwege problemen met de nieuwe FCPGA processors alle leveringen heeft gestopt voor onbepaalde tijd (er schijnt een fout in de graphics te zitten - daar wij echter nog geen problemen uit de markt hebben vernomen nemen wij aan dat dit incombinatie met bepaalde software/hardware zal zijn, waar 99,9% van de gebruikers niets van merkt) .

Dit betekent dat er geen nieuwe aanvoer van CPGA zal zijn en dat er een complete run zal komen op de nog maar zeer beperkt in de markt beschikbare slot1 processors. We verwachten dan ook dat i.p.v. een prijsdaling vanaf vandaag een explosieve prijsstijging zal ontstaan!

Wired News meldt dat SpectraDisc een speciale coating in ontwikkeling heeft waarmee DVD's van een 'houdbaarheids datum' voorzien kunnen worden. Het idee achter deze zelf-eliminerende DVD's is in feite gelijk aan de nu dode Divx standaard en kan bijvoorbeeld gebruikt worden bij de verhuur van DVD's: na 2 dagen rotten de schijfjes vanzelf kapot, terugbrengen is niet nodig (maw: hoe veroorzaken we nog meer troep?):

Spectra Science won't say exactly how its technology works, just that the chemical reaction is similar to how litmus paper works. Once the disc is put in the player and is hit by the DVD laser, it starts a process that eventually turns the disc blue, and blocks the DVD player's ability to read the disc.

Like Divx, it will be aimed at the renter market for people who want to simply rent and not worry about returning the disc. But SpectraDisc thinks it will avoid the disaster that was Divx.

"We think it gets around what killed Divx," said Nabil Lawandy, Specra Science's CEO. "There's no phone line, no credit card transaction, no special player needed, and no Big Brother element to it."

Digital Video Express, the joint effort between Circuit City and a Los Angeles entertainment law firm, launched the Divx format in September 1998 to almost universal criticism. Divx discs required a separate player that cost around $100 more than DVD players and needed a phone line hook-up, two facets that home theater enthusiasts hated.

Via Ace's Hardware stuitte ik op dit nieuwsbericht van Quicken.com over een partnership tussen S3 en Transmeta. S3 zal op basis van de Crusoe processor portable Internet devices gaan maken voor de consumer markt. Op deze site is een review te vinden van het K7OC Athlon Gold Finger Device, waar Femme in deze posting eerder al melding van maakte. Deze GFD blijkt in ieder geval prima te werken: een Athlon 500 behaalde de 800MHz met een voltage van 1.9v.

The card performed very well. I dont know what the deal was with 500MHz but i've still tried and gotten no post. But then again, whats the point of getting one of these devices if you are just going to run it at 500MHz? Its also not the card's fault that my Athlon wouldn't do more than 800MHz, its pretty much maxed out at 800MHz with air cooling. The card performed pretty much the same as the solder mod, except it can't change the cache. So if you dont want to do a lot of soldering, but you are up to doing a little, a simple cache change and this here card and you would be set. Or even better, I've received word that H.Oda's L2 cache divider changing program is going to be available by the end of next week. We shall see.... I was happy I was not able to bump up the bus speed on the K7M and boot with my current mod. But with this Gold Finger Device I could boot at much higher speeds because the FSB wasn't affected. In conclusion, I can say that this is definately worth every penny you will pay for it. Especially at this low cost introductory cost. It does its job, and does a dang good job of doing it. Tom told me he is thinking about raising the prices so if you want one of these you better grab one quick. Would I recommend this card? You bet!! It is the only card I have tested, but it is EXCELLENT! I dont have anything bad to say about this except that there is no way to change the cache, but from what I understand Computer Nerd is going to be selling a Gold Finger Device with optional cache change settings. This card is a great buy anyways.

Bij Gamers Depot is een Shoot out gepost tussen de Asus V6800 en Elsa Erazor X2, twee rappe GeForce kaartjes met DDR geheugen. De V6800 bleek het het in de benchmarks net ietsie beter te doen en krijgt van Gamers Depot een lichte voorkeur:

One thing is very clear after spending time with these cards, and that is how having DDR on your video cards improves your life and grants world peace. Ok so maybe not the world peace part, but one thing is clear, and that is the nVIDIA GeForce is currently the best video card solution on the market when running memory like DDR which doesn't become it's bottle neck.

Time will tell how long these will remain the speed champs, and I'm sure when the Voodoo5 6000 ships things will become very interesting. Until then, the only way you can get a better video card solution would be to perhaps wait for the next nVIDIA chip, which is code-named NV15.

If I was forced to pick which card I'd keep in my system, I'd have to go with the ASUS V6800 because it offers better speed, and a more robust software package. Since I don't use TV-Out, the ELSA wouldn't sway me over for that reason.

Bij AnandTech is deze ochtend een review geplaatst van het FIC KA-11 mobo, gebaseerd op de Apollo Pro 133A chipset van VIA. Het goede nieuws is dat het overklokken van een P3-550E zeer aardig wilde lukken:

We were able to push our testbed FC-PGA Pentium III 550E to 5.5 x 150 MHz = 825 MHz - faster than any production level Intel CPU at the time of publication - provided that we turned down the memory clock. [break]Het slechte nieuws is dat het plankje serieuze stabiliteitsproblemen heeft met 133MHz FSB's of 133MHz DRAM:[/break] The biggest problem we had with the KA-11 is a very fundamental one - there are serious stability issues when the DRAM or FSB clock is 133 MHz. We couldn't even install Windows in this configuration. FIC claims this is fixed in the latest BIOS update, but therein lies our second major problem with this board - there was simply no way to get it to accept the flash. We simply got a "unrecognized flash type" error message, using either the included Award Flash program or the latest version we could find on the internet. Fortunately, FIC should be capable of fixing both these issues, hopefully sooner rather than later.

In it's current form, we can't recommend the FIC KA-11 with its problems at 133 MHz. Hopefully these issues can be fixed with in a future board revision, or better yet through a BIOS upgrade. If this is done, the KA-11 has the potential to be a mostly above average board with some interesting features at a decent price. Until then, however, hold off on the KA-11 for now at least. We'll update this review if the situation changes.

Analysts estimated that desktop sales for 2000 would account for approximately 85 percent of revenues. This shift will negatively impact future revenues as well.

Be's product for the Internet appliance market is code-named Stinger, a software solution for appliances that deliver information and entertainment over the web. Based on BeOS, Stinger is fully customizable, offers a complete browser and supports popular streaming audio and video standards.

Idd een erg goed artikel. Hier een stukje over de toekomstige mogelijkheden van Code Morphing:

So you see, they made the Code Morphing software extremely modular. They can implement whatever parts of it they like in hardware to get whatever degree of performance gain they want. Crusoe should be viewed more as a proof of concept than as the ultimate outcome of 5 years of work. Crusoe represents one extreme of a spectrum that stretches from "implement the bare minimum in hardware" to "implement everything in hardware." Now that Transmeta has a technology that's proven to work in the most difficult case (where 2/3 of the transistor logic has been moved into software), they can go back in the other (easier) direction and start putting stuff in silicon.

Furthermore, since there's a software layer between the ISA of the binary and the machine's native ISA, Transmeta is free to beef up the execution engine (or any other part of the core) however they like, because the only thing that will require a recompile is the Code Morphing software. A case in point is the two chips in its product line. Each has a slightly different core (the Windows chip has special instructions in it that help speed up Windows), but they both are fully x86 compatible. There's nothing to keep them from stuffing new functions and features (SIMD anyone?) into the silicon, to help scale the product has high up as they want to go with it.

I'd say that it's only a matter of time before we hear an announcement of another product line from Transmeta. It won't be named Crusoe, because it won't be aimed at the mobile and embedded markets. It'll be a workstation and server class x86 CPU that runs Linux like a fiend, and it'll compete directly with Intel's IA-64. I can't wait.

We just got word from an EXTREMELY RELIABLE SOURCE that Advanced Micro Devices legal counsel contacted undisclosed retailers that have been altering AMD Athlon K7 CPUs that then allow Overclocking. AMD has demanded that these undisclosed retailers immediately stop sale of the altered units. They are stating that the retailers reworking the Athlon CPUs is violating either Copyrights or Patents held by AMD.

[...] Seriously though, we are working to get some more information on this issue, but I don't really see how AMD can control the sale of a CPU mod besides cutting off the vendor. But let's face it, any jackwad with a lawyer and some cash can surely cause you trouble, especially if you are a small retailer and don't have $40K to burn on preliminary litigation.

Make a car run faster, call it a Saleen or something else, get publicity and get rich. Speed up your computer, call it OC, and get a freakin lawyer on your back. Ain't America great? (well yes it is, but this is one of those things) Maybe just a publicity stunt?
