BartMan stuurde een link naar 404 waar wat info te vinden is over een nieuw type brandstofcel in ontwikkeling door Motorola, die over een kleine 5 jaar de gewone batterij in o.a. laptops zou moeten vervangen. Volgens wetenschappers zou de cel namelijk 10 keer langer blijven werken dan de oplaadbare batterijen:

The wheel also comes in with a built in gear shifter. It works quite well and holds each position very nicely. Moving over the ACT Labs, we have the king of looks and feel. This wheel looks like a wheel that you find in a normal car. It's a complete circle and has the feel of an actual car wheel. It's not too big but then again it does not have that shifter either. Overall, both wheels have their ups and downs when it comes to looks and it's more so a matter of preference.

If you are interested in doing video editing or recording shows (You need a big harddrive!), the capture utility that comes with the WinTV is a decent solution. It offers a pretty simple, but good interface. You can set capture size, various capture formats (Raw video as well as several different various formats), optional sound capture, and everything else that is needed for captuing video. It is only a capture utility, not a video editing suite!

Playing around with the utility, I was pretty much impressed. The video captured was of very decent quality (depedent on format, of course) and audio was good. The only problems I had were that there is an occasional line of "static"-like artifacts. This is because that CPU and I/O system was working hard to encode and write the image to disk. Quality improves when audio is disabled and when you minimize the capture preview. Quality can also be improved if Microsoft wrote a decent operating system (Seriously though, if one needs good capturing, you should try Linux, or Windows NT). The more CPU, the better. This also applies to your harddrive too. If you are capturing images at a higher resolution, you need a harddrive that can keep up. SCSI is always the best when it comes to heavy I/O usage, but a decent 7200 RPM IDE should suffice for most capture.

The cache sits between the processor and the main memory, feeding the processor whatever information it has on hand. Obviously, the cache cannot hold all of the information that the main memory holds, so it only keeps what information the processor has most recently used and discards the rest. There are several levels of cache, denoted by the names L1, L2, L3… etc., in descending order of speed. A L1 cache is on the same silicon die as the processor, and generally runs at the same speed. This makes it extremely fast, but electrical propagation laws limit its physical size. Some modern processors devote 80% of their transistors to the L1 cache. A typical L1 cache size is 16KB, as with the PIII.

L2 cache used to be on the motherboard, but starting with the Pentium Pro, Intel has moved the L2 cache on a separate die inside the same physical package as the processor. The L2 cache generally runs at a fraction of the processor speed, with a 128bit or 64bit interface to the processor die. By placing the L2 cache physically close to the processor, the leads in between are much shorter and the cache speed can be much higher. The older Katmai PIIIs have 512KB of discrete cache running at œ processor speed, the new PIII Coppermines carry 256KB of cache right on the core which allows it to run at full processor speed. Some high end systems, especially ones equipped with Digital Alpha chips, come with L3 caches on the motherboard that range from 1 to 16MB. They are rare in today's new PCs, however.

Well, being that both seem to operate the same, one may opt for the older device, being that he or she can save a few bucks. I personally recommend the newer Northwind GFD, because of two big differences. First of all, the Northwind is a fully fabbed solution, which means there are none of the wires that go along with the old device. Second of all, the quality of resistors used on the Northwind is higher. I think that the Northwind device will outlive the old Gold Finger Device. (Will they both outlive one's Athlon 500? Well, probably, so it's all relative.) With those two improvements come two drawbacks. #1) The DIP switches on the Northwind are much smaller. They require a fine ball point pen or small blade to alter the device's settings. This is not a big deal to me, but it is a slight hassle. #2) The settings for half of the DIP switches are read left-to-right, while the other half are read right-to-left. This was a little confusing at first, but in the end, it wasn't that significant as well. All-in-all, the Northwind GFD is a vast improvement over the first Gold Finger Device. I would suggest that anyone considering purchasing a GFD from Trinity Micro spend the extra $10 and go with the Northwind GFD. It is a higher quality device. The memory also overcloks well, as it was easily overclocked to 183Mhz with complete stability. But that was to be expected, as the memory was 5.5ns Samsung memory. We did find however that the card performed much better when the core clock was set to 145Mhz instead of 150Mhz, so you could say that 145Mhz was our sweet spot. If you're an avid overclocker and like to gain the most performance from your machine, then the Elsa ERAZOR X is the card for you.

There are a couple of reasons why one might get something out of slug sanding. First of all, we're taking off a layer or two of material from between the hot silicon inside the chip, and the heatsink that will dissipate that heat. Second of all, the fewer types of metal involved in the heat transfer, the more efficient the heat transfer. The silicon in the chip transfers its heat to a copper casing, the copper casing transfers the heat to a coating of (I believe) nickel, and then the heat is transferred to your heatsink (probably aluminum). Slug sanding takes out one of those transfers, because we're sanding off the nickel. Thirdly, the flatter you can get the chip against the heatsink, the more evenly and faster you can transfer the heat (you may think of sanding the bottom of your heatsink in basically the same way we'll show you to sand you're processor).

Superweb heeft toegezegd op 1 februari 5.000 nieuwe abonnees toe te laten op haar netwerk. De 25.000 overblijvers zullen in de rest van de maand geholpen worden. Intel has filed yet another complaint against chipmaker Via Technologies, this time asking a government agency to bar the Taiwanese company from importing products to the United States.

The giant chipmaker has filed a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission to bar Via from importing, among other products, its Apollo Pro chipsets, which work with Intel's Celeron and Pentium III processors, said Chuck Mulloy, an Intel spokesman.

Via is also slated to release its "Joshua" processor for low-end PCs in the near future. It is uncertain, but likely, that the request for a ban could be expanded to include these products as well.

Intel has filed a number of lawsuits against Via that center around a licensing deal that turned ugly. Via could not be reached for comment, but in the past the company has said they strongly dispute the allegations. [break]Leuk om te onthouden:[/break]"Intel sued Cyrix five times, and they never won. De processor heeft een soort virtual machine draaien die de instructie set van b.v. de intel x86 kan emuleren. Linus Torvald himself heeft intensief meegwerkt aan de ontwikkeling van de processor. Misschien in de toekomst een processor met firmware upgrades? Voorlopig blijft de produktie beperkt tot mobile devices."

At a technology disclosure conference here that has been anticipated for months, Transmeta said that it will come out with two fairly inexpensive, low-voltage processor families that can run the same software that Intel chips can because of Transmeta's "code-morphing" software. With Crusoe chips, customers will be able to buy cheaper notebook computers that can run all day on batteries without recharging. The chips can also be upgraded remotely, the company said.

The first chip, a low-power chip called the Crusoe 3120, will run at about 400 MHz and go into handheld devices and Internet appliances running Linux, said Steve Johnson, head of software operations at Transmeta. A version of Linux called "Mobile Linux" will be released for this chip, said Linux creator and Transmeta employee Linus Torvalds. The chip will cost between $65 and $89 and is in production. IBM will manufacture the chips.

A second chip, called the Crusoe 5400, will run at between 500 MHz and 700 MHz and include a 256K secondary cache integrated into the chip. This chip will be targeted at Windows-technology and will run on one watt of power, far less than its Intel counterparts. Coming midyear, the 5400 will cost between $119 to $329, depending on the speed. The new chips make it clear that Transmeta is both trying to capitalize on some of the shortcomings of Intel's processors while avoiding the mistakes made by processor companies that have tried and failed to break into this market.

Transmeta's chips will consume little power, a lingering problem for Intel. The 3120, for instance, will consume an average of one watt compared to a typical Celeron processor that consumes between four and 10 watts.

The performance of the 5400 running at 667 MHz is about the same as a Pentium III running at 500 MHz, said Doug Laird, vice president of product development. However, Transmeta is encouraging the use of benchmarks that account for the temporary lag during the translation and for the extended battery life the chips will enable.

The use of software to handle most of the technology's features means that further performance improvements and bug fixes can be distributed later without having to resort to cumbersome changes to the chip design itself, said Jim Chapman, vice president of marketing.

Initial devices to be introduced will be "Webpads" and other portable devices smaller than PCs costing $500 to $1,000. And later, by midyear, laptops weighing between 3 and 4 pounds and costing $1,200 and $2,500 will be released, Transmeta said.

The processor-software combination has serious potential but isn't an immediate threat to Intel, said Linley Gwennap of the Linley Group. He doesn't expect major computer manufacturers to get on board until the chip has had a chance to prove itself.

The 3120 will be made on the 0.22-micron manufacturing process while the 5400 will be made on the more advanced 0.18-micron process. Both chips will use a combination of hardware and software to emulate an Intel compatible chip.

Tweakotine meldt dat er bij Storage Review een review klaarligt van de Western Digital Caviar WD205BA, een 7200rpm harddisk waar je 20GB aan data op kwijt kunt. Hoewel deze WD205BA erg goed bleek te presteren in de benchmarks is hij toch nét niet in staat de Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40 van zijn eerste plaats te stoten:

In summary, despite its name, the Caviar WD205AA is one of the fastest ATA drives around. The fact that it is almost as fast as the Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 40 is complimentary, not derogatory. If you're looking for more than 20 gigs of space, the Maxtor is still the only choice. However, the performance margins between the two drives are slim. Combine this with the fact that both drives deliver commendable temperature and noise levels and you have a virtual tossup that may very well boil down to what drive becomes available first and at what price you can purchase them. Our only caveat is the confusing nomenclature. It's something that can throw off resellers as well as end users (this also seems to happen regularly with Maxtor's retail-box packages). As always, the buyer should make sure he/she knows exactly what's being purchased before committing.

Koen Crijns van Hardwareinfo.net heeft een review op z'n site gezet van de Asus V6600 Deluxe, een erg complete GeForce kaart die geleverd wordt met Video-in en TV-out, en niet te vergeten een 3D brilletje. Naast de hardware zelf was Koen ook erg te spreken over de flinke software bundel van de V6600 Deluxe:

Met alleen de driver-cd is het bij de ASUS V6600 Deluxe nog niet gebeurd.

Op de tweede CD vinden we ASUS’ eigen softwarematige DVD-player. Eindelijk is ASUS er achter gekomen dat het wellicht geen slecht idee is om deze standaard te bundelen met videokaarten. De kwaliteit van deze software is redelijk goed en met de ASUS DVD player kan iedere PC met minimaal een 300 MHz CPU en een DVD speler worden omgebouwd tot heuse DVD-Video player. Met behulp van de TV-out op de kaart kan het DVD video signaal uiteraard ook naar de TV gestuurd worden voor een nog mooier resultaat. De versie die bij onze V6600 Deluxe zat is 1.3.4 en deze versie toont alweer heel wat verbeteringen ten opzichte van versie 1.0 uit de tijd van de V3800.

Een derde CD biedt het programma Ulead VideoStudio SE. Door dit videobewerkingsprogramma mee te leveren, bindt ASUS indirect de strijd aan met producten als de Matrox Marvel. Met de Ulead software wordt een PC met V6600 Deluxe videokaart namelijk ook zeer geschikt voor videobewerking. De software is redelijk uitgebreid en werkt erg gemakkelijk. De interface is duidelijk gemaakt voor mensen die iets minder ervaring met PC’s hebben. Toch kunnen de professionals er ook redelijk mee uit de voeten. Een mooie optie van het Ulead pakket is dat het mogelijk is om hiermee real-time video-streams van de Video-In op te nemen naar MPEG-1 of MPEG-2 bestanden. Hier heb je uiteraard wel een potige CPU voor nodig. Op onze AMD Athlon 600 was de kwaliteit van de MPEG files zeker niet slecht. Zoals iedereen zich wel kan voorstellen moet je je bij de MPEG-2 files die Ulead in samenwerking met de V6600 Deluxe kaart maakt uiteraard geen DVD kwaliteit voorstellen.

CD vier tot en met zes zijn speciaal voor de gamers. ASUS heeft goed door dat het vooral spellen freaks zijn die op dit moment GeForce videokaarten kopen. Zij komen dan ook goed aan hun trekken met het ruime aanbod games dat ASUS met de kaart meelevert. Op CD vier en vijf vinden we de volledige twee versies van de spellen Drakan – Order of the Flame en Rollcage. Vooral dit laatste spel vind ik erg geslaagd. Op de laatste CD vinden we demoversies van een groot aantal spellen, waaronder Castrol Honda Superbikes, UEFA Champions League, Nations, Klingon Honour Guard, Draken, Mech Warrior 3, Lander, Micahel Owens League Soccer, Worms Armageddon, Rollcage, Rally Championsip, Roller Coaster Tycoon, European Air Way en Re-Volt.

Net income amounted to $0.43 per diluted share. The company reported strong growth in the just-completed quarter and continuing strong demand in all of its product groups - the Computation Products Group, the Memory Group, and the Communications Group.

Sales grew by 46 percent from the immediate-prior quarter, and by 23 percent from the like period of 1998. In the immediate-prior quarter, AMD reported sales of $662,192,000 and a net loss of $105,545,000, or $0.72 per share. In the fourth quarter of 1998, AMD reported sales $788,820,000, which resulted in net income of $22,321,000, or $0.15 per diluted share.

At $2,857,604,000, AMD sales for 1999 grew by 12 percent and reached a record high for the company. For 1999, AMD reported a net loss of $88,936,000, or $0.60 per share. Results for 1999 include a one-time after-tax gain of $259,236,000 from the sale of Vantis Corporation, the company's programmable logic products subsidiary that was sold during the second quarter of 1999. Sales for AMD continuing product groups -- the Computation Products Group, Communications Group, and Memory Group -- grew by 17 percent over 1998. In 1998, AMD reported sales of $2,542,141,000, and a net loss of $103,960,000, or $0.72 per share.
