Onder de naam 123 Linux bieden IBM en Linux-specialist Stone IT vanaf vrijdag standaard Linux-oplossingen. Netfinity-servers worden door Stone IT voorzien van de Linux-distributie van Red Hat.

Volgens Frank van der Wal – bij IBM verantwoordelijk voor Netfinity – is het nieuwe kant en klare pakket vooral aantrekkelijk voor het midden- en kleinbedrijf. "Bedrijven uit het MKB zijn vaak te klein voor een eigen IT-afdeling, waardoor de stap naar Linux-servers doorgaans erg groot was." Een van de voordelen van Linux boven Windows NT is – naast stabiliteit – de lage prijs.

De IBM-servers worden niet alleen geleverd voorzien van Red Hat Linux, het systeem wordt tevens geïntegreerd in het bestaande netwerk. Ook biedt Stone IT beperkte ondersteuning. Dit alles is in de prijs van de pakketten inbegrepen.

Tot nu toe werden Netfinity-servers standaard zonder besturingssysteem geleverd. Wel werden de vier grote Linux-distributies al telefonisch ondersteund door de IBM-helpdesk.

Het nieuwe Linux-iniatief moet volgens Van der Wal los worden gezien van de recente internationale Linux-aankondigingen door IBM. "We zijn al een jaar bezig met Stone IT. Zonder de internationale inspanningen van IBM op het gebied van Linux was 123 Linux er ook wel gekomen. Maar het valt natuurlijk wel mooi samen."

Gateway en AMD worden echte vriendjes, Gateway gaat de Athlon namelijk nu ook gebruiken voor hun business-lijn. Check C|NET voor het nieuws:

The new computers, among other signs, indicate that the marriage of convenience between the two is growing affectionate. The San Diego, Calif.-based PC maker has also expanded its use of Athlon in the ordinary Select computers. When it first announced it would start using AMD chips again on Jan. 10, Gateway came out with only one computer using an Athlon. At 600 MHz, the chip fell within the bottom half of the Athlon family in terms of speed. The computer was priced at $1,299, within Gateway's budget class.

Since then, Gateway has begun to sell machines with 700-MHz and 800-MHz Athlons. Some of the machines cost over $2,000. Athlon is also featured on Gateway's recent TV ads.

AMD also scored another win recently when HP quietly began shipping consumer PCs using Athlons to some retail outlets. With HP adopting the chip, AMD has persuaded four out of the top five PC makers to manufacture Athlon consumer systems. Dell remains the holdout.

Increased cooperation between Gateway and AMD would serve the strategic aims of both companies. Gateway first started using AMD processors about a year ago, but it started phasing AMD out of its product line by the end of the summer. An Intel processor shortage in the fourth quarter, however, crimped Gateway's year-end sales and fourth-quarter earnings, Gateway CEO Jeff Weitzen charged.

AMD, meanwhile, needs to break into the commercial market to hit is goal of owning 30 percent of the processor market. "We'll never get there without substantial penetration into the commercial market," said W.J. "Jerry" Sanders, CEO of AMD, in a conference call earlier this week.

Bij GamePC is een review te vinden van de Supermicro PIIIDM3, een high-end moederbord met de i840 chipset vooral gericht op servers en workstations. Hoewel de i840 chipset eigenlijk bedoeld is voor Rambus is voor de review gebruik gemaakt van standaard SDRAM geheugen. De i840 kan hier erg slecht mee overweg en heeft (net als de i820) grote stabiliteits problemen tijdens een demootje Quake III Arena:

Unfortunately, the board didn't retain stability throughout all our tests. Like the 4-DIMM Asus P3C-2000 board which crashed on us every 20 minutes, the Supermicro board with DIMM's couldn't run through all of our tests without crashing. Quake III crashed during our stress test loops, giving a memory allocation error, and 3DMark 2000 would randomly cut out. Considering this is a high-end server motherboard, and ultimate stability is a must, we'd advise gamers and business types a like to stay away of ANY I840/I820 with SDRAM. Every board we've tested hasn't gone through our stability tests successfully. Although, to it's credit, the board successfully ran overnight with dual processors running two copies of Prime95. Each CPU was running at 100% for over 12 hours without heat problems or crashing.

While this board has just about every add-on that you could possibly stick on a motherboard, the performance can't match the price tag. Even so, if you priced together a Dual Slot-1 BX motherboard, an Ultra160 SCSI controller, 10/100 Intel ethernet card, and Generic creative audio, you'd wind up with a bigger price tag than this board. So in that respect, it is a good deal. Ultra160 and Ultra DMA/66 is an unbeatable combination for people with lots of hard drives, not to mention AGP Pro 4X and 64-bit PCI slots for power users. Although we would have liked a few more options to tweak our settings in the board's BIOS, the board obviously wasn't intended for overclockers in any respect. It's a good deal, and it's got a ton of features, but I wouldn't base any mission critical applications on this board, or any I820/840 board with SDRAM for that matter.

There are two versions of the Crusoe. The high-end model, the 5400, features a .18µ core, 128KB of on-chip L1 cache, 256k of L2 cache, and a die size of 73mm². The 5400 operates at an unheard of 700MHz! The economy model (targeted for internet appliances and ultra-light notebooks), the 3120, utilizes a .22µ core, 96k of on-chip L1 cache, NO L2 cache, and a die size of 77mm². The 3120 will run at 400MHz.

T-Break heeft een review klaarliggen van een Slot-1 Intel Pentium III processor op 750MHz. De reviewer heeft hem vergeleken met een Celeron 550 en een AMD Athlon 700. Hieronder een gedeelte:

As expected, the Pentium III 750 cleared all the tests above the Athlon 700. However, the difference between the two CPUs wasn't much. It would be interesting to see how much faster the 733 along with at its 133MHz FSB (Compared to this one's 100MHz) perform. I should be receiving the Micro-Star i820 chipset based Motherboard in a couple of days now and will try to have its review with the 733 ready soon.

Hopefully, soon, the KX-133 based Motherboards should start making an appearance as well, bringing the Athlon FSB speeds up to 133MHz as well. And then, we'll have a real fight-night!

Look at it this way; if the DoJ had at this juncture decided to equip all of its staff with Microsoft Office 2000, we would have had something of a massive PR own goal for the outfit that's busting Microsoft, would we not?

We have had a large amount of e-mail on this subject sent to us over the past 2-3 days and we waiting to check up on it all. Well it turns out that the rumor seems to be true, we have contacted a few people at Microsoft who all seem to confirm that Windows "Neptune" no longer exists and a new operating system will come out of it and Odyssey instead. Testers have yet to be informed of the change but are expected to be notified quite soon. More news when we get it.

NU.nl brengt het nieuws dat 3D en Linux weer een grote stap dichter bijelkaar komen, en dan hebben we het niet over 3D Screensavers, maar over zware 3D applicaties:

SGI, Nvidia en VA Linux ontwikkelen gezamenlijk een grafisch subsysteem voor het 'open source'-besturingssysteem Linux. Deze samenwerking moet Linux-werkstations voor zwaar grafisch werk mogelijk maken. De drie bedrijven - respectievelijk fabrikant van grafische computers, producent van videochips, en Linux-expert - gebruiken hiervoor de OpenGL-interface die oorspronkelijk door SGI is ontwikkeld. De eerste publieke demonstratie van dit project zal komende maand in New York worden gegeven. Het lijkt erop dat hiermee de samenwerking tussen Microsoft en SGI op het gebied van OpenGL de doodsteek heeft gekregen. Dat project, codenaam Fahrenheit, liep eind vorig jaar ernstige schade op toen Microsoft de voorkeur gaf aan het eigen Direct3D. Dat onderdeel van DirectX moest volgens de Fahrenheit-plannen samengaan met OpenGL.

Zo schreef DOS : "Ik sta helemaal achter deze ontwikkelingen, en dat komt omdat ik Linux zie als HET alternatief voor windows. En nu lees ik:

chaos schrijft: "Anandtech heeft een review geplaatst over de Addtronics W8500 WTX Workstation/Server Tower kast, ontworpen voor multi-processor systemen en mobo's in het WTX formaat. Ook een standaard ATX moederbordje kan hierin gezet worden.":

We've also seen a recent flurry of high-end motherboards announced with a new form factor, WTX. The "W" in WTX stands for workstation, but many of these cases and motherboards will be targetted at the server market.

Basically, WTX is a major extension of ATX, but the big features of WTX include a larger motherboard for greater expansion and enhanced power capabilities that ATX could not provide sufficiently for the workstation market. The larger motherboard makes more room for integrated components on the WTX I/O shield and optionally two additional expansion slots. The enhanced power capabilities are designed to support multiple processors, AGP Pro graphics cards and lots of hard drives. WTX cases are backwards compatible with ATX motherboards, but not vice versa.

The WTX specification has actually been in the works for quite a while, but is just now showing up in motherboard and case products. The first WTX case to make it to the AnandTech labs is the Addtronics W8500, graciously provided by Computer Nerd.

MP3.com wordt door de RIAA (amerikaanse club van platenbakkers) voor de rechter gehaald wegens het aanbieden van de onlangs geïntroduceerde Instant Listening en Beam-it services, waarmee bezoekers muziek af kunnen draaien vanuit een database op MP3.com. Vanzelfsprekend is de RIAA niet gecharmeerd van deze vorm van copyright-schending (thanks Azqi voor de tip):

On Friday, following the path of two Digital Video Disc lawsuits, the Recording Industry Association of America filed a copyright infringement case against digital music portal MP3.com Inc. (Nasdaq: MPPP).

The suit calls for a halt to MP3.com's newly launched Instant Listening and Beam-it services that allow the owner of a CD to play music from a library of selections that MP3.com has already digitized on its site.

That is illegal, said the RIAA in a statement. MP3.com constructed that database without making the slightest attempt to obtain permission from the copyright owners to do so.

The product includes ALi’s Slot 1 license with Intel Corporation and is designed for both desktop and notebook PC systems.

Maurice schrijft: "Tot mijn grote verdriet vond ik gisteren een brief van UPC op de deurmat. Daarin stond dat ik een excessief datagebruik zou hebben ver boven het gemiddelde; 36 Gb in een maand. Ik wordt gedwongen om dataverkeer te verminderen of een business account te nemen. Later bleek dat meer mensen zo'n brief hebben gekregen. Het begint erop te lijken dat UPC z'n monopolie nu begint uit te buiten. Prijzen voor een business account zijn toren hoog! Met een business account zou ik dus bijna 10.000,- per maand kwijt zijn. Voor mij zit er dus niets anders op dan minder te gaan netten. Hoezo monopolie?

UPC adverteert met videos rete snel downloaden etc. Nou die mag ik nu dus niet meer downloaden en 538 luisteren via het web is ook verleden tijd....

Dit is dan wel niet echt "nieuws" maar misschien wel interessant voor een hoop mensen. Graag zou ik reacties van anderen horen om te zien wat zij denken dat "Datalimiet onbeperkt, fair usage" inhoudt en of ze het met UPC eens zijn".

Koen van Hardwareinfo.net heeft een informatief artikel gepost over AMR sloten (= Audio/Modem Riser) waarmee gemakkelijk audio- en modemfunctionaliteit in een systeem te integreren is. Het artikel is trouwens ook terug te vinden in het januari nummer van Computer Totaal. Hieronder een stukkie:

De vergelijking met een “klein AGP-slot” is niet eens zo stom. Een AMR slot zit vaak op de plaats van een AGP slot op het moederbord en is net als een AGP slot bruin uitgevoerd. De functionaliteit is zoals al gezegd compleet verschillend. Met AMR proberen de verschillende moederbord fabrikanten twee vliegen in één klap te slaan: ten eerste moet het door AMR makkelijker worden om audio en modem functionaliteit op het moederbord te integreren en ten tweede biedt AMR ook de mogelijkheid om dit, indien gewenst, stukken goedkoper te doen. De visie achter AMR is dat het digitale gedeelte van een modem of een geluidskaart (DSP chips e.d.) on-board op het moederbord blijft en alleen het analoge gedeelte op een klein riser-kaartje terechtkomt. Dit kleine riser-kaartje neemt dan plaats in het nieuwe AMR slot. Om ook nog eens goedkope integratie van audio en modem functionaliteit in lowbudget systemen mogelijk te maken, biedt AMR de mogelijkheid om voor het digitale gedeelte geen extra chips te gebruiken, maar gewoon de rekenkracht van de CPU.
