At its default clock speed of 500MHz, our Celeron 500 with the Swiftech MC370-2 is 27% cooler than with our modified Vantech setup. That 23.4 degrees Fahrenheit cooler!

Once the Celeron is overclocked to 563, the temperature only bumps up nearly three degrees making us think we could probably clock it a bit higher if we dared.

And look at those numbers for the overclocked Celeron 466 at 581MHz, the CPU runs nearly 31 degrees cooler with the Swiftech MC370-2 than our custom cooling setup!

If you're thinking our modified Vantec cooler is a sissy, we assure you it's the same tricked out heatsink/fan we use to test all our socketed CPU's. Yeap, that's right, all our previous overclocking tests with the FC-PGA Coppermines used the exact same modified Vantec cooler, so this unit is definitely the real deal.

AVL bracht me een link naar Singapore Hardware Zone waar een harddisk shoutout te vinden is tussen de Western Digital D273BA Expert 27GB, Quantum Fireball Plus KX 27.3GB en de IBM Deskstar 37GP. De WD Expert komt als winnaar naar voren:

There you have it, the best and the worst giants available in the market today. All three drives performed pretty well, although the Quantum Fireball KX Plus could have been better, if not for the cache buffer. The Western Digital Expert series is clearly the better performer of these three drives. If you're looking for a hard drive that incorporates both speed and capacity, look no further. On the other hand, if you want an overall performer and you have a huge appetite for hard disk space, the IBM 37GP is pretty good too. As for Quantum, sad to say, it failed to impress me, and I would consider it only if the price is really attractive.

Na de succesvolle afronding van de 1e fase in de regio's Rotterdam, Amsterdam en Utrecht is Alcatel ook geselecteerd voor de implementatie van ADSL in de overige regio's. Hiermee is Alcatel nu ook in Nederland onbetwist marktleider geworden op het gebied van ADSL. Betanews schrijft dat Microsoft de opvolger van Windows 2000 een geïntegreerde window manager krijgt. Deze desktop verbouwer zal net als bijvoorbeeld Windowblinds het gebruik van skins mogelijk maken. Lijkt me geen slecht ontwikkeling, aangezien ik het Windows interfeesje persoonlijk erg suf vind:

Microsoft has solicited job offers for a software design engineer who would help develop a new extensible window manager for the successor to Windows 2000. A new window manager would integrate "skinning" right into the OS to enable a complete interface customization, similar to UNIX X11 window managers like Enlightenment. Microsoft's Jobs Web site reads, "It will be the foundation for a new generation of Window Managers, which will allow easily extensible UI look, feel and behavior. This component will also enable the operating system to support different Window Managers, which could evolve independently from the operating system itself." Ok, looks like Gigabyte has quietly released an updated revision of their K7 motherboard GA-7IX, and named it GA-7IXE. The information, as usual is hidden and I find it ironic that they actually hide it here under the super7 motherboard directory. A bios version F2 dated 1/19/2000 has also been released and posted on this page here , with note saying that it is for "PCB 1.1 Mass Production". The manual for GA-7IXE can actually be found here in pdf format but unfortunately most of the pages are corrupted. As best as I can tell, the board has the following features:

Een onschuldig ogende GeForce blijkt zich bij aanraking met een VIA MVP3 chipset te transformeren tot een explosieve combinatie. GeForce256 kann explodieren ! Ja, Ihr habt richtig gelesen: Wenn ihr eine GeForce256 Karte auf einem MVP3G2 Super Sockel 7 Mainboard von Epox laufen habt, dann kann es sein, dass Euch die GeForce um die Ohren fliegt, da die Spannungsregler des Mainboards nicht mit dem hohen Stromverbrauch der GeForce256 klarkommen. Ihr glaubt mir nicht ? Hier ist eine Email des Epox Tech Support, der dies selbst behauptet ! Update: Ich muss mich verbessern: Es ist nicht die GeForce, die explodieren kann, sondern die Spannungsregler bzw. Kondensatoren des Mainboards. Das Ergebnis ist jedoch ähnlich !

Webwereld meldt dat zowel de Amerikaanse Northwestern University als het Britse Oxford het gebruik van Napster onmogelijk hebben gemaakt. Uit onderzoek bleek dat netwerk traffic enorm was toegenomen door fanatiek Napsterende studenten:

Bij de Northwestern University ging het puur en alleen om bandbreedte. MP3-verkeer slokte meer dan 20 procent bandbreedte op. "Toegang tot Napster is geblokkeerd vanwege problemen met de bandbreedte, niet omdat het illegaal is", verklaarde Susan Andrews van Northwestern tegenover CNet.

De restricties vallen bij studenten niet in goede aarde. Een student van Oregon State voerde in een campusnieuwsbrief het volgende aan. "Het beleid van de universiteit moedigt het delen van informatie aan. Net als toegang tot lokale en nationale faciliteiten om informatie te verspreiden."

Hardnews.org vroeg Tim Sweeney (Epic), Gabe Newell (Valve) en Jake Simpson (Raven) welke belangrijke ontwikkelingen zij in de toekomst op hardware gebied verwachten. Tim Sweeney blijkt zich er interessante opvattingen op na te houden:

Tim Sweeney: 3D cards will be essential for the next few years. Things will get interesting in 2006-2008, after CPU speed has increased radically -- software rendering could return. Until recently, 3D cards have let gamers run in higher and higher resolutions, but with the Voodoo4-5 and upcoming NVidia parts, performance will be so high that your monitor will be the only resolution-limiting factor. After that point, fill rate can be taken for granted, and the only things that matter are hardware per-pixel shading, curved surfaces and displacement maps. Unless 3D card makers come up with some radically cool innovations to exploit per-pixel effects and sub-pixel triangles, they're going to becoming obsolete in the long run.

Ik lees op Slashdot dat er een nieuwe versie van Apache is los gelaten. Apache 1.3.11 bevat vooral bug fixes en zal de laatste release zijn voor de intro van Apache 2.0. Hier de release notes:

EBN Online meldt dat de door Intel, Hyundai, Infineon, Micron, NEC en Samsung in het leven geroepen next-gen DRAM alliantie kenbaar heeft gemaakt dat Intel rivalen AMD en VIA zich bij de club aan mogen sluiten. De alliantie heeft tot doel een door de industrie geaccepteerde opvolger te ontwikkelen voor de huidige SDRAM en RDRAM technologiën:

The DRAM partners said the new alliance means Intel has conceded that it must work hand-in-hand with the chip industry to develop new technology rather than unilaterally forcing architectures on the market.

As part of its charter, the group will welcome additional participants under guidelines now being drafted. According to the format, there will be no way to exclude Intel processor rivals AMD and Via from joining, provided they conform to its bylaws, said Bert McComas, an analyst at InQuest Inc., Gilbert, Ariz.

And as potential members, the companies would stand on equal ground with Intel, working alongside it to develop the market's next packet-data-based DRAM architecture and getting early access to design specifications.
