Volgens Gamers Depot staat Klipsch op het punt om binnen 24 uur de nieuwe ProMedia 5.1 speakerset aan te kondigen. De set bestaat uit vijf 60 Watt satellites, een 200 Watt sub met twee 8" conussen en een nieuwe bedienings unit. Eind volgende maand hoopt Klipsch met de verkoop te beginnen. De multimedia setjes van Klipsch staan al lange tijd bekend om hun goede kwaliteit. Sinds kort zijn ze eindelijk in Nederland verkrijgbaar:

Volgens onderzoek van The Inquirer is er de laatste week een verbetering opgetreden in de leverbaarheid van 1,33GHz Athlons. Deze processors zijn door een hoge vraag al enkele weken moeilijk verkrijgbaar. In het Intel kamp is sprake van een slechte verkrijgbaarheid van de 1GHz Pentium III. Dit probleem zal zichzelf oplossen zodra de 1,3GHz Pentium 4 verder in prijs zakt. De eerstvolgende Intel prijsdaling vindt waarschijnlijk op de 29ste plaats:

Several brokers started offering the part towards the end of last week, indicating that the drought, which has lasted for several weeks, now appears to be over. A 200MHz Athlon 1.3GHz costs $160 in the spot market while the 266MHz front side bus version costs between $15 and $20 more.

But there is now a shortage of the Intel Pentium III at 1GHz in the spot market, indicating that at $200 there is demand for this part, which is set to shuffle off Intel's coil. The Pentium 4 at 1.3GHz now costs $150 - it's going to shuffle soon enough too.

Inmiddels is de prijs van de Thunderbird 1333 opnieuw aan het zakken na een kleine stijging in de afgelopen week. Ook dit kan een indicatie zijn dat de leverbaarheid verbetert:

Hardware One heeft de nieuwe serie GeForce2 MX-kaarten van Elsa onder de loep genomen. Het gaat hier om de Gladiac 311 en de 511, voorzien van respectievelijk een MX 200 en MX 400 chip. De Gladiac 311 is het goedkoopst en moet het doen met 32MB SDRAM. Het gebrek aan bandbreedte komt duidelijk in de benchmarks naar voren. Het spelen op hogere resoluties is nauwelijks mogelijk met dit videokaartje. Over de Gladiac 511 zijn de berichten wat positiever. Deze kaart berust op de MX 400, wat in het kort neerkomt op een 'oude' MX maar met een op 200MHz geklokte core. De Gladiac 511 kan ondanks 32MB extra geheugen echter niet overtuigen en is de hogere prijs niet waard, aldus Hardware One:

The performance difference between the 32MB Gladiac 511 and the 64MB version is not very significant, such that it is not justified spending the extra money on 64MB version of Gladiac 511. The 32MB Gladiac 511 performs almost as well. The TwinView function of these Gladiac cards still have a lot of room for improvements, and it is still far from reaching Matrox’s dual head standard. Nevertheless, for casual dual monitor users, the Gladiac's TwinView would suffice just fine. If you’re looking for an affordable, high performance card, or if you just want a card with dual monitor support that you can use for 3D gaming, the Gladiac 511 would be your best bet.

SuperMicro heeft vandaag een Socket 603 server/workstation moederbord voor de nieuwe Intel Xeon heeft geïntroduceerd. De SuperMicro P4DC6 is gebaseerd op de i860 chipset en beschikt over twee 64-bit / 66MHz PCI slots, vier 32-bit / 33MHz PCI slots, één ACR slot en een onboard Adaptec 7899W dual channel Ultra160 controller. Op XBit Labs is verder wat info te vinden over de prijzen van de Iwill DF400-SN en DX400L. De DF400-SN met maximaal 4GB RDRAM gaat volgens hun ongeveer 1000 dollar kosten, terwijl de DX400L met maximaal 2GB RDRAM ongeveer 200 dollar goedkoper is. Ondanks het relatief kleine prijsverschil tussen de Pentium 4 en Xeon van slechts 50 dollar kan het bouwen van een dual Xeon machine hierdoor toch een kostbare aangelegenheid worden:[/break]As we have already told you in our news, the first mainboards will be offered by Iwill, Tyan, Supermicro and Intel. Op de site van Yahoo Finance is te lezen dat Apple MacOS X vanaf vandaag op iedere geleverde Mac gratis voorgeinstalleerd meelevert. Eerder had Apple aangekondigd dit pas in Juli te doen, maar waarschijnlijk komt het Apple beter uit dat er zo veel mogelijk mensen MacOS X gaan gebruiken, zodat er voldoende druk komt op softwaredevelopers om meer native OS X software te ontwikkelen. Opvallend is dat MacOS X ook op de modellen met maar 64MB intern geheugen meegeleverd wordt, terwijl 128MB het minimum is:

Het gaat hier om een dienst waarvoor de gebruiker moet betalen maar dan ook onbeperkt liedjes mag downloaden. De kosten die verbonden zijn aan deze dienst bedragen FL 17,50 per maand. In eerste instantie worden er nummers aangeboden van vijf grote platenmaatschappijen. De heren hebben nog geen overeenkomst met de Buma/Stemra maar zeggen zelf juridisch sterk te staan:

Max Page van FrostyTech komt met een review van de Blizzard S370 Copper heatsink. De heatsink met fan is aan de zware kant, namelijk 500 gram. De zestien koelvinnen zijn eerst uit 1,5mm dik koper gehaald en vervolgens op de basis gesoldeerd. Op de heatsink is een 60mm Sanyo Denki fan geplaatst, die 4600 rondjes per minuut maakt. De heatsink komt binnen op de vierde plaats in het klassement onder de Zalman CNPS3100 en boven de Vantec FCE-62540D. Een redelijke heatsink dus, alleen de prijs valt misschien wat tegen. Hieronder de conclusie:

While the Blizzard S370 has not managed to wrangle in the number one position from our group of eleven reference heatsinks, it has managed to place in the top four. The temperature rating coming in only three degrees less than the popular Globalwin CAK 38.

The Blizzard offers thicker fins than the CAK38, and a much better base finish but cannot match its' level of cooling performance, even if just by a few degrees. At a cost of $58USD the S370 does offer some what you would expect from a copper heatsink of its' size. The Sanyo Denki fan is a great cooling solution, though it lacks the RPM output craved by many motherboards these days.

The clip used to attach the heatsink to the socket is easy to engage, and not so stiff that you wonder if you're putting your processor in danger. Definitely worth considering if you are in the market for a solid copper heatsink.

Chris Connolly van GamePC heeft een review online gezet over de GeForce3 kaarten van Asus, de V8200 Pure en de V8200 DeLuxe. Beide kaarten zijn uitgerust met 64MB 3,8ns DDR SDRAM en een GeForce3 die verstopt zit onder een over-sized heatsink. Verder zijn beide kaarten in het bezit van de unieke Smartdocter software en bijbehorende hardware waarmee overclockers de rotatiesnelheid van de fan, een paar voltages en de de temperatuur van de core en het geheugen in de gaten kunnen houden. De DeLuxe versie heeft hiernaast ook nog een S-Video In, een S-Video Out, Composite Video Out en een geinig VR brilletje. Beide kaarten zijn, afhankelijk van je eisen, een goede keus aldus de reviewer:

The Asus V8200 series performs right in line with every other GeForce3 on the market, despite having a redesigned PCB layout. The V8200 Pure and Deluxe cards performed exactly the same (which is why we only included one set of benchmarks for both cards), as they only differ in feature sets. If you choose to go with the Deluxe model, you're getting Video In/Video-out functionality, some generic stereoscopic 3D glasses, and a couple extra pieces of software. Nothing really incredible, but if you're looking for a card with these I/O functions, there's really no competition.

They look cool (although we've got some more interesting cards coming up soon..), performs great, comes with a very respectable games bundle (full versions of Sacrifice, Star Trek Elite Force, some others), and even includes the SmartDoctor monitoring software for those looking to overclock.

Asus seems to have all their bases covered with these cards, let's just hope they can keep their software division out of trouble before getting more gamers angry at them.

Bij PC Watch kun je een samenvatting vinden van de laatste stand van zaken betreffende de te verwachten features van AMD's Hammer CPU. We kunnen onder andere intregratie van HyperTransport verwachten. Deze techniek wordt toegepast om data uit te wisselen tussen de CPU en het geheugen met een maximale bandbreedte van 6,4GB/s. In samenwerking met de NUMA techniek geeft dit vooral bij multiprocessor configuraties een fikse performance winst. Ook kunnen we een volledige set SSE2 instructies verwachten in de CPU. De eerste Hammer zal in het tweede kwartaal van 2002 op de markt verschijnen, aldus PC Watch:

Intel heeft gisteren een vijftal nieuwe processoren voor lichte notebooks gelanceerd. Het gaat nog niet om de mobiele Tualatin, maar speciale versies van de 0,18 micron Pentium III core die veel minder stroom eten. Ten eerste de Pentium III 600MHz ULV, die in besparende mode nog geen Watt vermogen nodig heeft en een spanning onder de 1 Volt vereist. De tweede is de Pentium III 750MHz LV, welke iets meer stroom eet en op 1,1 Volt werkt. Dan zijn er nog drie nieuwe Celeron processors; een normale mobiele 800MHz en twee 600MHz versies met respectievelijk LV en ULV naamkaartjes. Deze kennen echter geen batterijbesparende SpeedStep technologie zoals de Pentium III, waardoor het stroomverbuik iets hoger ligt:

Op Tom's Hardware Guide vinden we vandaag een zeer uitgebreid artikel waarin maar liefst 46 verschillende koelers met elkaar worden vergeleken. Steeds meer bedrijven gaan deze dingen maken, waardoor af en toe hele slimme, vreemde en extreme nieuwe ontwerpen verschijnen. Het stuk begint dan ook met wat theorie; hoe kun je het beste een koeler maken. Daarna worden de nieuwkomers besproken, om vervolgens over te stappen naar de test. Niet alleen wordt gekeken naar de temperatuur, maar ook naar het gewicht, het geluidsniveau, warmtegeleiding en draaisnelheid van de fan. De conclusie is dat je zeker geen geld moet besparen op dit onderdeel van je PC, omdat het verschil in kwaliteit groot is. Een paar van de meest recent uitgebrachte koelers vallen vooral op:

One of the real highlights in the group remains Noise Control's Silverado, which combines two encapsulated rotors (arranged like turbines) with a CPU contact surface made of pure silver. It's the best of both worlds - a very low noise level and a high cooling performance. Of the newcomers, the Blizzard Thunderbird doesn't cut that bad a figure - while its cooling performance is very good, its noise level is a whisker away from unacceptable. Spice meldt ons dat MSI hun assortiment gaat uitbreiden met een CD-Writer. De StarSpeed MS-8312 schrijft op 12x, rewrite op 8x en leest op 32 speed. De drive beschikt over Seamless Link Technologie zodat je voor onderzetters nu toch echt naar de winkel moet. Volgens de aankondiging op de website van het bedrijf komt er in eerste instantie alleen een interne versie op de markt welke met een ATAPI interface is uitgerust:

Cromwell surfte langs Planet Multimedia en zag daar een interessant stuk tekst over het aftappen van het Nederlandse internetverkeer. Sinds 15 april dit jaar is iedere provider wettelijk verplicht mee te werken als de rechter de opdracht geeft om een bepaalde klant in de gaten te houden. De TIIT (Transport of Intercepted IP Traffic) specificatie, welke het verkeer tussen de provider en het ministerie van justitie regelt, is door de BVD officiëel geheim gehouden uit angst voor DDoS aanvallen. Onlangs lekte het document met ip-adressen en al uit. Op verzoek van c't magazine heeft een Amerikaanse expert ernaar gekeken en deze moest tot de conclusie komen dat het een haastklus is geweest:

Het gaat om gegevens waarop open source programmeurs op het moment tapsoftware baseren die als open-source vrij verkrijgbaar moeten worden. Daarmee zou in theorie iedereen zijn eigen aftapmachine kunnen bouwen. Experts laten tevens weten dat de specificaties kwetsbaar zijn voor misbruik. Eens temeer daar providers al hun afgetapte data gewoon via de Amsterdam Internet Exchange naar de netwerken van politie en Binnenlandse Veiligheidsdienst sturen. Zowel het IP als het MAC adres van de router die dat verkeer regelt zijn al bekend.

[...] De protocollen die de overheid gebruikt voor dit doel, SLL en IPSec, zijn ongeschikt voor beveiliging van afgetapt verkeer. De overheid zou simpel versleuteld aangeleverde gevens kunnen ontsleutelen, terwijl dit slechts is toegestaan voor specifieke doeleneinden en met toestemming.

Gila wordt bedankt voor het insturen van een link naar een site waar een bijzondere nieuwe gadget wordt gedemonstreerd. Het gaat om een soort door midden gebroken toetsenbord, waarvan de rechterhelft als muis kan dienen. Aan de zijkant van dit stuk met knoppen zit een touchpad. Zolang deze wordt aangeraakt werkt het ding als een muis en zullen de toetsen geen letters maar muisklikjes opleveren. De voordelen van het apparaat zijn volgens de uitvinder groot; je bent minder ruimte kwijt en hoeft je armen niet zo veel meer te bewegen. Het grote nadeel is natuurlijk dat je in het begin nogal moet wennen. Op de site kun je een kort filmpje downloaden van het apparaat in actie. De maker hoopt snel iemand te vinden die het apparaat wil produceren:

HlpDsK was vanmorgen nog wakker en attendeerde ons op een berichtje van de mannen van HardOCP, over geremarkte 1,33GHz Athlons met AXIA core. Ene Josh Biggs, werkzaam in een PC-winkel, meldde aan Kyle Bennet dat zijn zaak vier geremarkte CPU's ontdekte in een levering. Blijkbaar zijn er mensen die een slaatje proberen te slaan uit de populaire maar schaarse 1,33GHz Thunderbirds:

It was bound to happen sooner or later! The market demand for 1.33 AMD "AXIA" chips has been anything but low and the demand has pushed the prices on these coveted chips sky high. Josh Biggs drops us a heads up pointing out that they (the retailer he works for) just took delivery of four REMARKED "AXIA" CPU's. They have of course gotten in touch with AMD and are getting to the bottom of this. You will want to check this out for sure. If you take a second to look at the picture, the remarking is pretty obvious and not done well at all. Still, if you were simply glancing at your CPU, it might just get by you. You are warned!

Nog dezelfde dag dat Intel's nieuwe Xeon 1,7GHz processoren officieel verschenen, lanceerden Compaq en Dell hiermee uitgeruste workstations. Deze workstations zijn gebouwd rond Intel's i860 chipset en kunnen worden uitgerust met 1 of 2 Xeon processoren van respectievelijk 1,4/1,5/1,7GHz met 256KB L2 cache. Dell en Compaq richten zich met deze workstations op de professionele gebruikers, zoals CA-engineers en designers, software developers, digital content creators en financiëel analisten. Zoals bekend zijn Dell en Compaq respectievelijk de nummer 1 en 2 in de wereld der PC-bouwers.

Dat Dell een streepje voor heeft bij Intel, zou opgemaakt kunnen worden uit het feit dat de prijzen al in de configuratieschermen zijn opgenomen en er besteld kan worden. De mogelijke configuraties variëren bij Dell in prijs vanaf zo'n $1.800 (1.4GHz Xeon, zonder monitor) tot ruim $22.000 (dual 1.7GHz Xeon, 4GB PC800 ECC RDRAM, 3Dlabs Wildcat II 5110, 4x 73GB UltraSCSI HD in RAID5, 2x 18" flat panels, enz., enz.) . Uit de prijslijst van Dell blijkt verder, dat het prijsverschil tussen een i850 P4 en i860 Xeon met gelijk geklokte processoren vrijwel nihil is, nl. $34 oftewel; minder dan honderd gulden. De meerprijs voor een tweede 1.7GHz Xeon bedraagt $699. Het geheel wordt bij Dell gemonteerd in een eenvoudig toegankelijk mini-tower chassis, dat zonder gereedschap geopend kan worden.

Compaq's concurerende Xeon systemen worden verkocht onder de naam Evo Workstations, type W6000 en W8000. Zie hier voor een overzicht van de opties. Prijzen zijn nog niet bekend. De W6000 en W8000 worden volgens Compaq leverbaar vanaf medio juni. De Evo's hebben, evenals sommige andere Compaq PC's, de feature dat de drive-bays 90 graden gedraaid kunnen worden en daardoor zowel verticaal als horizontaal (desktop) kunnen werken.

Compaq Evo Workstation W6000/W8000:

klerkx bracht ons via de submit op de hoogte van deze review op AMD3D van de Kanie Hedgehog 238, een in koper uitgevoerde heatsink voor Socket A processors. Het gaat om een vrij lomp en groot geval van bijna een halve kilo. Standaard zit er een 60mm 5400RPM YS-Tech fan bij. Om de prestaties te testen wordt de koeler op een Thunderbird 1@1,4GHz geplaatst. Ook wordt er gekeken naar het effect als er een Delta 38 op geplaatst wordt in plaats van de standaard fan. Het blijkt dat deze zwaardere windmolen geen overbodig luxe is, omdat het beestje de temperatuur van de chip anders nauwelijks lager krijgt dan zijn aluminium concurrenten. Met extra blaaskracht werkt hij onder load echter nog beter dan de GlobalWin WBK38:

In recent months the KANIE 'Hedgehog' Copper CPU cooler has made a name for itself. With a heavy duty 60mm Delta 38 fan, the performance is one on the best I've seen, out-performing even the GlobalWin WBK38 on full load. However, mounted with the stock 60mm YS-Tech fan the results were a little disappointing, so I would definitely recommend fitting it with a heavy duty 60mm Delta 38 fan for maximum performance.

So is it worth paying for it? ... Well, the performance is excellent, price however is not. There are other cheaper HSF that can almost match the performance the 'Hedgehog' offers. The only thing that lets the 'Hedgehog' down is the price factor. If you can afford it ... then why not. There is yet to be a HSF that can be worthy of the 'Editor's Choice' crown.
