Op Palmclub.nl is een plaatje verschenen waarop volgens de geruchten de opvolger van de Palm Vx te zien is, de m505. Het eerste wat opvalt is het scherm, dat in 16 bit kleur is uitgevoerd. Het design is voortaan zilverkleurig en het apparaat is iets dikker dan zijn voorganger. Er moet ook een goedkopere m500 komen met zwart-wit scherm. Over de specs is ook al het een en ander bekend:

• Snelle Dragonball processor (waarschijnlijk 33 MHz)
• Misschien: 16MB geheugen
• SD kaart uitbreidings-sleuf
• Nieuwe USB connector/cradle (sneller synchroniseren)
• PalmOS 4.0, met oa. nieuwe Memopad app.

Op CeBit in maart moet het nieuwe speeltje officieel getoond worden. Extreminator submitte dit nieuws, waarvoor dank.

De mensen van Digit-Life kwamen met het geweldige idee om eens een roundup te maken tussen verschillende SCSI CD-RW spelers. In deel 1 gaan ze aan de slag met de Plextor PlexWriter 12/10/32S en de Teac W512SB. In de tests worden ook de resultaten van de IDE-versies van beide branders er eens bijgepakt en op sommige punten worden de SCSI versies zelfs verslagen. De strijd tussen de Plextor en de Teac is echt stuivertje wisselen; de één belast je CPU minder, terwijl de ander je CD'tje net even iets eerder heeft afgemaakt:

As showed the testing, we have seen two practically identical CD-RW drives. The both can boast of good speed results, high reading speed of the CD-RW discs, quality recording of the discs, high-speed and correct extraction of the audio tracks.

But there arises a question why in some tests the SCSI-devices were slower than the analog IDE ones? There is no a simple answer: all depends on the usable controller, software, OS. But the fact is that with the given computer configuration, with the given software under the control of the Windows 98 the SCSI-drives were slower. For a wider statistics we also tested the recorders with the Tecram DC-315U controller which is one of the most popular solutions for the systems with a SCSI recorder. The results obtained with the BusLogic MultiMaster were not in favor of the Tecram.

But speaking about the performance do not forget many shortcomings of IDE devices as compared with the SCSI-devices. They are: inability of the simultaneous work of the IDE-devices, higher CPU utilization in case the IDE-drive doesn't support the DMA mode or realizes this support incorrectly. Besides, note a wide range of application of the SCSI interface.

So, what's the conclusion? If you have a SCSI-controller or you may invest into it, if you need the ensured stability and reliability while recording, then, when purchasing a recorder pay a closer attention exactly to the SCSI-drives. After you have defined an interface, you are to decide what speed set it should dispose of. The models in question will give you the maximum possible performance of a system based on the SCSI interface together with high quality. Which one of the considered drives should be given a privilege to? A user must decide whether $40-50 are worth a brandname manufacturer, higher performance and quality of recorded discs.

VNUNET meldt dat Samsung eind dit jaar een internet-dvd-speler op de markt gaat brengen. Het apparaat zal worden uitgerust met een Ziva 5-chip van het Amerikaanse C-Cube Microsystems. De Ziva 5 heeft een 32-bit architectuur met een kloksnelheid van 150 MHz. De chip is uitgerust met DSP-extensies (Digitale Signal Processing) om het beeld en het geluid optimaal te verwerken. Naast een DVD'tje afspelen kun je met het apparaat ook surfen, emailen, chatten of andere dingen op het net doen. De internet-dvd-speler heeft een draadloos toetsenbord op basis van infrarood-communicatie en heeft een 56K modem. Hieronder een gedeelte uit het artikel:

Volgens een woordvoerder van Samsung Nederland komt het apparaat niet voor eind van dit jaar op de Europese markt. Ook zal het apparaat waarschijnlijk uitgerust worden met een harde schijf, zodat informatie opgehaald van internet te bewaren is. Waarom de dvd-speler alleen beschikt over een v.90 modem is Samsung Nederland een mysterie. Als via een dergelijke verbinding een Gbytes grote dvd-film van internet opgehaald wordt, is het apparaat daar dagen mee bezig

TechWeb meldt dat AMD druk bezig is om haar nieuwe LDT standaard in te voeren. Rond de 10 bedrijven hebben al een licentie gekocht, waaronder nVidia. De graphics-gigant gaat de bus hoogstwaarschijnlijk gebruiken voor haar Socket A 'Crush' chipset. Lightning Data Transfer is oorspronkelijk ontwikkeld om de north- en southbridge van een chipset aan elkaar te verbinden, maar AMD gelooft nu dat de bus ook buiten chipsets en zelfs buiten PC's ingezet kan worden:

The LDT bus was originally designed as simply a bus connecting the north and south bridges of the company's chipsets. As processor speeds reached faster and faster speeds, AMD's LDT bus, Intel Corp.'s Hub Architecture bus, and the V-Link bus from Via Technologies were designed to prevent those processors from coming to a standstill as data traffic clogged the PC's PCI data highway.

[...] AMD sees the technology as being extended "up" into a point-to-point connection for servers, eliminating the microprocessor bus entirely. For 32-bit Athlon multiprocessor systems, a superset of the LDT specification, or "coherent LDT," has been developed for non-uniform memory-access matrixes, where arrays of processors can access dedicated local memory as well as "distant" memory that is attached to other CPUs.

Volgende maand zullen een aantal kopers van LDT press releases de deur uit doen waarin ze uitleggen wat ze ermee van plan zijn.

Op VR-Zone zijn wat geruchten verschenen over de chipsetplannen van VIA, geript van Impress. Ten eerste de opvallende mededeling dat de Socket A DDR chipset KT266 is voorzien van ondersteuning voor twee processors en dus zou kunnen concurreren met AMD 760MP. Ook de Socket370 chipset met Tualatin support; Pro266T heeft ondersteuning voor twee processors, maar dat is geen verrassing omdat de huidige Pro266 dat ook al heeft. Wél nieuw in de T-versie is de ondersteuning voor PCI-X.

Over de Pentium 4 chipset PX266 is er ook nieuws, deze blijkt namelijk ook PCI-X ondersteuning te hebben en zou geschikt zijn voor een maximum van vier processors. Opvallend is dat de chipset een FSB-snelheid van maar liefst 533MHz ondersteund! Het lijkt er dus op dat de tweede versie van de Pentium 4, codenaam Northwood, naast een aantal veranderingen die al bekend waren ook een snellere (133MHz quad-pumped) FSB krijgt.

Als laatste vangen we een glimp op van de Apollo Pro 2002, een Itanium chipset die mogelijk tot acht processors ondersteunt en voorzien is van InfiniBand en PCI-X. Ook hier zien we de 533MHz FSB terug, maar dit keer in combinatie met 333MHz DDR geheugen (PC2600).

Gisteren had DPC net geen 2,5 miljoen blokjes helaas, en ook het aantal nieuwe leden is wel eens hoger geweest. Maar ondanks dat stonden we nog wel op de 1e plaats, en dat is het belangrijkste natuurlijk.

CoNNaiZ schrijft dat verwacht wordt dat de mobiele versie van de AMD Athlon rond 19 maart aangekondigd zal worden. Zowel Hewlett-Packard en Compaq zullen dan snel de eerste Athlon laptops aanbieden, aldus dit korte berichtje van ZDNet:

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (NYSE: AMD) will get a big break come March, when a large North American PC maker signs on to offer an AMD-based notebook to corporate customers. Two large PC makers, Hewlett-Packard and Compaq Computer, are likely to offer AMD's new mobile Athlon for notebook PCs. The processor will be announced in mid-March, on or about March 19, sources said. Full story to follow.

De release van maart valt dus mooi in de verwachtingen van Q1 2001. De eerste mobiele Athlons zullen volgens eerdere berichten draaien op een snelheid van 600 en 700MHz.

X-Bit Labs heeft van deze Franse site vernomen dat de prijs van een 128MB nVidia NV20 kaart rond de $635 - $700 komt te liggen. Eerdere geruchten voorspelden een prijskaartje van 500 dollar, echter dan voor de 64MB versie. Dat deze prijzen absurd hoog zijn en het budget van de gemiddelde gamer ver ontstijgen mag wel duidelijk zijn . Helaas zijn deze berichten over de prijs al vanaf het begin aanwezig, dus veel hoop op verandering heb ik persoonlijk niet. Aan de positieve kant is het wel bijna zeker dat we komende maand al de eerste hands-on tests en reviews kunnen verwachten, ervan uitgaande dat de release datum van 27 februari juist is.

Our friends at Clubic posted some curious stuff on the pricing of the upcoming graphics products based on a very exciting product – NVIDIA NV20 chip. According to their sources, the cost should lie somewhere between $635-$700. To tell the truth, this is quite expensive. Especially taking into account that NVIDIA has recently dropped the prices on its other chips. Now the GeForce2 MX costs around $140 while GeForce2 GTS – around $280 (on the average).

Some time ago we heard that NV20 will cost around $500. Now as you see, the price is said to be higher. Maybe Clubic guys mean 128MB graphics cards, while the mentioned $500 refers to 64MB pieces.

Anyway, you should remember the situation with NVIDIA GeForce2 Ultra based products: the real price of the selling cards turned out about $50 lower than the official one.

Tsja, als ze in de praktijk 50 dollar goedkoper uitvallen is dat leuk, maar ik zat meer te denken aan 50% .

De mensen van cdrlabs hebben een review gebakken van de Plextor PlexWriter 12/10/32S. Deze SCSI brander beschikt over de burn-proof technologie. Het apparaatje haalt 14X-24X P-CAV audio extractie en heeft een random access time van 135 ms. De reviewer is heel erg enthousiast over deze brander, maar uit de test blijkt duidelijk dat er nauwelijks verschil is met de IDE-versie van deze brander, de PlexWriter 12/10/32A. Maar als je persé een SCSI brander wilt is dit een hele goede keuze:

Is it too little too late? The PX-W1210TA first hit the shelves about eight months ago. While I'm sure Plextor could have licensed someone else's technology and put a SCSI drive on the market at the same time, they instead took the time to develop and tweak their own drive. I'm glad they did because even after eight months the PX-W1210TS still stands out. On top of that the 12x CD-RW market is still going strong. While 16x drives are here, companies are still announcing new and improved 12x products. Plextor has just recently announced their new ATAPI 16x drive, the PX-W1610TA, but still has not made any plans to sell a 16x SCSI drive public. Until they do the PX-W1210TS is not only CDRLabs' SCSI king its also Plextor's top of the line SCSI drive.

If you are looking for a SCSI drive that performs like a champ, is reliable and compatible with all the popular software, this is your drive. Currently you can find the drive for around $255-$275 at Hyper Microsystems depending on the bundle. I have dealt with Hyper Microsystems as both a customer and with CDRLabs and I have to say they are a great company. It's always nice to know there is someone there to answer the phone and reply back to your emails. Tell them CDRLabs sent you.

Highs:

• Excellent CD-ROM data transfer performance.
• Excellent DAE scores - high speed and quality to boot!
• Excellent software support - works great with CloneCD.

Lows:

• The same lackluster software package has not changed in years. We want to see something other than Easy CD Creator!
• ASPI missing from installer.
• Manual can be difficult if this is your first time with SCSI hardware.
