In een tijd waarin continue openstaande internetverbindingen steeds gewoner worden is er een steeds groter wordende behoefte aan firewalls. Er zijn tientallen van zulke softwarepakketten die allemaal beloven dat je bij gebruikt ervan veilig bent voor aanvallen van hackers en scriptkiddies. Om de keuze van een firewall wat makkelijker te maken heeft SysOpt.com een review geschreven waarin vijf bekende firewalls worden vergeleken: BlackICE Defender, Internet Firewall 2000, McAfee Personal Firewall, Sygate Personal Firewall en ZoneAlarm. Om ze te vergelijken werden op elke firewall een aantal online testen losgelaten, verder werd er onder andere gekeken naar de interface en configuratiemogelijkheden.

Opvallend genoeg komen de gratis pakketten ZoneAlarm en SyGate Personal Firewall als beste uit de test, de duurdere pakketten zijn volgens de review te ingewikkeld of missen een aantal features, zoals ondersteuning voor LAN's en het in de gaten houden van uitgaande verbindingen:

Gamers Depot was zo vriendelijk een review te schrijven van Iomega's Zip CDRW 12x10x32. Deze IDE CD-ReWriter is uitgerust met Sanyo's bekende BurnProof-technologie om buffer-underruns te voorkomen. BurnProof deed zijn werk goed, net als we bij andere schrijvers gezien hebben:

During our burning test, we tested on various types of media, and had them all burn completely. Even while the burning process was going in the background, we had other applications going and even tried some games. Thanks to its “burn-proof” technology the burning process continued without a hitch, pausing when needed, and then continuing when the “coast was clear”. This is the drive to get if you’re in need of an IDE-based drive and want to stop making coffee cup coasters out of your CDRs.[break]Verder bleek de drive ook goed te presteren. Helaas werd de geclaimde 20x digitale audio-ontfutseling (staat erg groot op de doos) niet gehaald:[/break]Iomega claims, right on the front of the box even, that this drive can perform DAE (digital audio extraction) at 20x. As you can see in our testing, using Xing Software’s Audiocatalyst, the best we were able to get from this drive was just shy of 17x. Even so, that’s better than most people’s current rip speed, but still not as good as what we’ve seen from Plextor’s drives.

Verder wordt wel gezegd dat het rippen van mp3's erg goed ging met deze schrijver; ook al ging het dan niet zo snel als beloofd, er waren nauwelijks tot geen 'glitches' te bespeuren in de geripte mp3-tjes.

Windows-guru Paul Thurrott deelt ons mee dat de opvolger van Internet Explorer 5.5 in de beta-fase is aanbeland. IE6 zal volgend jaar samen met Windows Whistler gereleased worden. De belangrijkste nieuwe feature zal een geïntegreerde mediaspeler zijn, waardoor gebruikers nog makkelijker om zullen kunnen gaan met beeld en geluid. Verder zal ook de Instant Messenger geïntegreerd worden, die bestaande uit een "Online Buddies"-werkbalk concurrentie moet gaan vormen voor ICQ. Of dit gaat lukken? Als laatste major update worden een aantal nog onbekende aanvullingen op Dynamic HTML genoemd:

IE 6 will build on the foundation of IE 5.x, adding new Explorer bars that will make it easier for users to work with digital media such as music, video, and images.

IE 6 will also feature as-yet-unknown extensions to Dynamic HTML (DHTML) and other features for Web developers, as well as a My Pictures feature that will allow users to easily view, save, and email pictures over the Internet.

The Source schrijft dat ome Tom een preview in elkaar heeft geknutseld over de Vapochill socket van Asetek. De Vapochill socket is zoals de naam aangeeft geschikt voor socket processoren van AMD en Intel en beloofd de temperatuur van je CPU flink onder het nul punt te brengen (-20 tot -10 graden). Volgens Asetek is dat goed voor een overclock van 30% tot 60%. Een klein nadeel is de prijs die met 650 doller aka 1600 nederlandse florijnen wel een redelijk gat in je portemonnee slaat, maar dat is nog steeds een stuk goedkoper dan een Kryotech systeem :

Limiting VapoChill to -19°C (-2°F) cooling enables the usage of a significantly smaller and lighter compressor that is less noisy and wastes less energy than a compressor that goes down to -50°C (-58°F). As long as the processor clock speeds reached by VapoChill are indeed identical to those of Kryotech's solution, a smaller, lighter, quieter and cheaper system is obviously of significant advantage. Asetek speaks of 30-60% possible CPU clock speed increase. Andre doesn't like the term 'overclocking', but speaks of 'thermic acceleration'.

[...] For the $650 of suggested retail price the VapoChill offers a very professional cooling solution for the crazy ones of us, who think that overclocking has still got a bright future, and it's got to really, doesn't it? It also might well be the default cooling solution of future processors.

Bij HardwareZone is een review verschenen van de MSI K7T Master. Dit moederbord mag zich het enige echte workstation-plankje voor Socket A-eigenaren noemen. De K7T Master heeft namelijk standaard twee IEEE1394 (iLink / FireWire) poorten en een Adaptec Ultra160 SCSI-controller aan boord. Ook een erg mooi bordje dus voor de semi-professionele video-editor. Verder zijn er 4 DIMM-slots en 6 busmastered PCI-sloten te vinden op de plank. Voor al dit moois moet natuurlijk wel wat betaald worden; de uiteindelijke prijs van dit bord zal dan ook rond de $550 liggen. Het bord mist overklok-functies als een veranderbare multiplier en Vcore, maar dat zal diegenen die voor deze plank kiezen waarschijnlijk een worst wezen. Tijdens alle testen bleef de Meester zeer stabiel, natuurlijk belangrijk als dit bord in servers of workstations gebruikt gaat worden.

The K7T Master is certainly a dream motherboard for all power users who seek performance and good features. The highly integrated board comes with built-in Firewire and Ultra160 SCSI that will help you get started with digital video editing right away. This high-end board is definitely not targeted at the gaming market and neither overclocking enthusiasts. It would be the board of my choice if it were to come with some great overclocking features. However, the K7T Master still exhibited excellent stability and performance. At an estimated retail price of about $550, this board is certainly good value for your money.

PlanetHardware heeft een review online gegooid van de Abit Siluro GeForce2 MX. De kaart blijkt net zo goed te presteren als andere GeForce2 MX-kaarten (no surprise there). Verder legt PlanetHardware ook nogal veel nadruk op het feit dat bij een resolutie van 1024x768 en hoger de GeForce2 MX zijn grote broer toch echt niet kan bijhouden. Ook niet echt een verrassing. Conclusie is dat de Abit één van de betere MX-kaartjes op de markt is, maar dat je meestal beter voor iets meer poen een GeForce2 GTS kan kopen:

When making comments about GeForce2 MX based cards, one of the primary factors we take into consideration is the cost of the product itself - usually around $100. The Siluro GeForce2 MX comes in priced a bit higher than some other versions available, but this one has a fairly hefty software bundle, as well as good TV-out capability. Sure it can't handle over 60fps at high detail and high resolution - but that's not the reason you buy a card like this. You'd buy it if you don't play that often, but still want decent performance. And, for a little extra cash you get some quality stuff with this card, a nice bonus. For the market that this card is intended for, this card is as good as they come.

On the downside, after spending life on the greener side of the fence, no one in their right mind would want to choose this card over one based on the GeForce2 chipset, so long as you had the cash to back yourself up. We still feel that cards based on the GF2 chipset are a bargain, that is until Nvidia releases their next generation GPU next year.

De goede mensen van Digit-Life hebben een review in elkaar geknutseld van de Asus V7700 Pro. Zoals de naam al doet vermoeden is deze videokaart gebaseerd op nVidia's GeForce2 Pro GPU. De GeForce2 Pro heeft dezelfde 200MHz core-snelheid als de GF2GTS, maar bezit een sneller geheugen dat standaard op 400MHz (tegenover 333MHz voor de GeForce2 GTS) werkt. Deze snelheid kon bij het exemplaar dat Digit-Life in handen had nog opgekrikt worden naar 230MHz core / 450MHz mem. In de benchmarks blijkt dat het kaartje zoals verwacht sneller is dan de GeForce2 GTS, maar ook overgeklokt nog niet kan tippen aan de Ultra. De conclusie is zeer positief; de GeForce2 Ultra is net iets sneller, maar ook een heel stuk duurder.

ASUS AGP-V7700 Pro card is an extension of AGP-V7700 series and it shows good results in term of performance. Note that game possibilities are very promising for all resolutions, even at 1600x1200x32 you can play some single player games. Besides, it costs much less, than GeForce2 Ultra based card. So, if you’re not playing at very high resolutions and you’re looking for a high-speed 3D accelerator, you’d better pay attention to ASUS AGP-V7700 Pro.

I should notice that its overclockability is quite promising. Though, to what extent the card could be overclocked depends on the definite card.

ASUS AGP-V7700 Pro card is a bright representative of GPU family of the second generation from NVIDIA; it takes the second place (in terms of speed and price) after GeForce2 Ultra based cards.

PC Gamer schrijft dat er mogelijk voor het einde van dit jaar een PCI-kaart op de markt komt die het mogelijk maakt om Dreamcast spellen op je poeter te spelen. Recent reports indicate that Sega is to put Dreamcast technology onto a PCI card that will allow us to play all Dreamcast titles on PC. It was indicated that there may be a release by the end of this year.

In dit bericht van Upside Today wordt melding gemaakt van dalende LCD-scherm prijzen voor het einde van dit jaar. Er wordt voorspelt dat voor deze kerst flat-panels waarschijnlijk een stuk meer in het bereik van de gewone consument zal komen. Echter, de prijsdaling is mogelijk slechts van tijdelijke aard omdat hij mede werd veroorzaakt door recente overproductie:

According to numbers collected by PC Data from its network of resellers, the average price of LCD monitors dropped 8 percent during September, and Koenig said prices are likely to drop further this quarter as resellers prepare for the holiday season.

Rob Enderle, an analyst at Giga Information Group, said holiday prices won't be the only thing putting pressure on prices this quarter.

He said there's an oversupply of LCD monitors in the market because a lot of manufacturers who were making the displays for laptops saw an opportunity to generate money in the flat-panel market.

Herb Berkwits, senior product manager at ViewSonic, said the suggested retail prices on his company's top-selling 15-inch monitors could drop $200, into the $800 range, by the end of the year.

The swift price drops throughout the market, however, could be short-lived, he said. Much of it is driven by oversupply, and prices will level out as the market adjusts, Berkwits said.

FiringSquad brengt ons meer info over de AMD 760 chipset delay die onlangs door Gigabyte aangekondigd werd. Kort erna kreeg Dr. Tom al de geruststelling van AMD zelf dat alles nog gewoon volgens schema loopt. Anyway, volgens de info van FiringSquad was er inderdaad sprake van een klein probleempie met de AMD 760 die echter direct gefixed kon worden door het aanbrengen van een extern circuit:

After discussing the matter with a trusted source, we've discovered that a glitch has indeed been found with the current version of the chip (B2), but a fix has already been implemented by AMD.
According to our source, under certain conditions the 761 Northbridge will generate a clock glitch into the CPU that may cause the system to hang. To resolve this, motherboard manufacturers will have to integrate an external circuit to filter out the glitch.

We're assuming that it is this glitch that the Gigabyte representative is referring to. If this is indeed the case, the representative may not have known that a fix exists for this and in fact has already been corrected on AMD's latest reference design, Corona EVT-8 (Which includes the circuit.) For reference, Corona EVT-8 was made after initial samples of Gigabyte's 7DX were released. [break]Er blijft echter nog steeds wat onduidelijkheid bestaan over de tijdige implementatie van de fix door mobo fabrikanten. Hoewel dit dus misschien betekent dat de eerste plankjes wat later op de markt komen moeten we niet vergeten dat 133MHz Athlons en de AMD 760 chipset pas begin volgend jaar echt goed leverbaar worden:[/break]So now that the problem is known and the fix determined, AMD and its motherboard partners must decide how they will proceed. For the first batch of motherboards, the fix will have to be resolved via the previously mentioned external circuit.
It remains to be seen if AMD will resolve this glitch with an upcoming revision of 761. This next revision is rumored to solve the heat-related issues some have encountered.

Our source suggested that some motherboard manufacturers don't even know the full story behind the glitch with B2, which hints that a few manufacturers may not be prepared to implement a fix.

[...] Now that the public knows the glitch exists, it's up to motherboard manufacturers to implement the fix as quickly as possible. Will this lead to some delays for manufacturers? We can't answer that question, but during our conversations with AMD, they made it clear that 760 and 266MHz Athlons won't be as readily accessible in the retail channel upon launch as their products have been in the past -- "widespread availability" isn't expected until the first quarter of next year.

Helaas had Mr. Burke nog geen zin in problemen met zijn nieuwe baas waardoor we geen sappige info te horen krijgen over de GeForce3 of nVidia DDR chipset. Hieronder heb je alvast twee vragen:

FiringSquad: What impresses you the most about NVIDIA?

BB: Execution, execution, execution. And not just going through the motions either. They consistently hit their marks for product cycles and come out with the best product. They have a very big picture plan for the company, they are not tunnel vision on one segment of a single market. They have addressed several markets with products in more than one segment of each market. They are on a fast track right now. That makes work fun and exciting. It also makes it possible for them to secure the resources need to insure their success.

FiringSquad: Where do you see 3D graphics moving in the near future? Embedded memory? Tile based rendering? How does NVIDIA plan on pushing the envelope?

BB: NVIDIA has been pushing the graphics envelope for a while now and will continue to do so. We are exploring a number of ways to increase image quality and increase the speed needed for real-time photo-realistic graphics on the PC. Embedded memory and tile based rendering are possibilities. But do not be surprised if we introduce something new, like we did with the GPU.

Een week na de vorige hack-actie op Microsoft was het gisteren alweer raak. De Nederlandse hacker Dimitri was het gelukt via de Unicode-bug het netwerk op te komen. Microsoft had deze bug al eerder erkend en er ook een patch voor uitgegeven. Vreemd genoeg was de patch niet geïnstalleerd op de betreffende eigen server. Dom, dom, dom. Hierdoor kon onze landgenoot Microsoft's publieke webpagina's veranderen, of de bestanden die te downloaden zijn aanpassen. Verder kreeg hij toegang tot bepaalde gecodeerde files, die de belangrijkste wachtwoorden bevatten. Hij zal er echter geen werk van maken deze bestanden te decoderen:

One week after Microsoft reported an intrusion into its corporate networks, another hacker claims to have penetrated the company's Web servers on Friday. The Dutch hacker, using the alias Dimitri, says Microsoft failed to install a patch for a known bug in its Internet Information Server and has not sufficiently secured its Web servers.

Dimitri says he gained access to several of Microsoft's Web servers and was able to upload a short text file boasting of the hack to a page on Microsoft's public site. He could alter files on Microsoft's download site, he says. "I could add Trojan horses to software that Microsoft customers download," Dimitri says.

Dimitri also claims he downloaded files containing administrative usernames and passwords to the server. The encrypted files could be decoded with a tool called the L0ft crack, he says, but says he will not decode them.
