Looskuh stelt op ons de hoogte van de actie van de Startpagina-dochters. Middels hun site www.startpagina2.nl pleiten ze voor rechtszekerheid voor iedere webmaster en 7.5 miljoen gulden, oftewel f 15.000,- voor iedere webmaster.

Zoals je weet is Startpagina.nl onlangs voor 30 miljoen overgenomen door de VNU. De startpagina-dochters zijn toen ieder 1.000 gulden beloofd, relatief erg weinig dus, zeker als je bedenkt dat juist zij voor een groot deel van de content zorgen.

Ben.Grimm van Wirehub: 'Het 'verhaal' (niet van Martijn Bevelander zelf, maar van iemand in die organisatie) was dat 'een stagiair zich er gemakkelijk vanaf had gemaakt door maar wat te kopieren van de Wirehub-site'. Dat lijkt me nonsens, want je laat de benamingen van je producten en de specs daarvan niet door een stagiair verzinnen, kopieren en zonder controle op je website zetten, natuurlijk.

Bij Hardware One is een review gepost van de bekende Abit KA7. Ik weet niet of ik dit nou nog een keer moet zeggen, maar voor diegenen die een half jaar als holbewoners in een grot geleefd hebben of zo: de KA7 is het Athlon moederbord van Abit gebaseerd op de VIA KX133 chipset. Deze reviewer gebruikte een Athlon 650 en kreeg deze stabiel op 116MHz:

For CPU stability, I managed a max of 116MHz FSB stable (6.5 x 116MHz = 754MHz) at 1.80V. Therein lies the inherent overclocking sensitivities of a higher Alpha EV6 200MHz bus on Athlons, where FSB increments destabilizes it by a larger factor in comparison to their INTEL counterparts. Dat lijkt mij wel erg voorbarig... waar de meesten met een Abit KA7 max. 113MHz FSB halen, kan je met een GFD zo je Athlon 500@700 krijgen.

Morgoth schrijft dat de Franse site Actu Micro hun GeForce2 GTS review nu ook in het Engels heeft gepost. De review is nu ook weer normaal te lezen, gisteren werd het zaakie vrij snel weer offline gehaald helaas. Heb je gisteren de kans dus niet gehad om de review te lezen: volg deze link even!

The GeForce2 GTS is an evolution of the GeForce256. It uses a 0.18µ process, which allows the processor to run at a whopping 200 MHz! The 32 MB of DDR will run at 166 MHz, which translates to an equivalent of 333 MHz. What else is new? Here are the main changes, compared to a GeForce256: The T&L engine has been enhanced, allowing a 30% improvement (we tested on P-III 600, i820, SDRam PC, not a very efficient machine but a quite popular one. Things do get a lot better if you have RDRam and a faster CPU). It is unfortunate however that so few games leverage T&L.

• The fillrate has been a key focus for Nvidia when designing the GeForce2. While a regular GeForce 256 can process 4 single textured pixels per clock, the new GeForce2 GTS’s pipeline can apply two textures on those 4 pixels… per clock! The Texel Fillrate reaches an impressive 1.6 Gtexel/sec.
• Thanks to the improved Fillrate, the hardware supersampling FSAA doesn’t have the same framerate penalty it did have on the GeForce256. Currently, the drivers only allow FSAA in OpenGL.
• The new chip architecture allows new –and impressive– visuals effects such as pixels shaders without any major performance hit. Those new effects give access to advanced controls at the pixel level, which can produce dramatic results on effects like bump mapping, spectacular lighting, etc. Once again, game developers have to implement this new feature so it may be a while before you actually see the benefits in a real life game.
  
  Performance wise, the GeForce2 GTS really shines when using high resolutions. It outperforms the GeForce256 by at least 20 to 25% on our (modest) PC. We were a little disappointed not seeing a bigger performance gap. The bottleneck is no longer tied to the fillrate, but lies in the memory bandwidth. There isn’t much Nvidia can do about it until new –and much faster– memory hits the market. If you are looking for the best graphics board, period, you’ve found it (but we haven’t tested the Voodoo5 5500 yet –a matter of days). On the other hand, if you are already a proud owner of a GeForce256 DDR and you do not wish to play at higher resolutions than 1024x768, there is no major reason –beside FSAA, but then again, you might be interested by the new 3dfx product– to rush out and get a shiny new GeForce2 GTS.
  For all you multimedia fans, there are a lot of possibilities built-in the GeForce2 GTS – TV Tuner, video-in, Mpeg2 decoding and encoding – but our sample board didn’t implement them. We’ll have to wait for the card manufacturers to send us their products.

Abit heeft een nieuwe Bios versie gemaakt voor de Abit KA7, ze hebben er geen readme bij gestopt wat er gefixed of verbeterd is maar hoe nieuwer hoe beter, toch?

Diamond heeft nieuwe drivers gemaakt voor de hun Viper II, Tnl werkt nog steeds niet maar deze versie moet de 2d performance omhoog halen en beter werken met verschillende spellen.

Arjan meldt: dat Johan De Gelas van Ace's Hardware een artikel heeft geschreven waarin hij onderzoekt wat de grootste bottleneck is bij een modern systeem. De conclusie is dat het geheugen te langzaam is, iets wat ook erg logisch is als je bedenkt dat de multipliers elke dag hoger worden:

Performance is limited by certain bottlenecks, and that is what this article is all about. We will try to find out what exactly are the bottlenecks in a top notch system. Do we need more memory? Faster memory? Faster videocards? A faster Front Side bus (FSB)? Bigger faster L2-caches? Which one of the mentioned solutions will have the most impact?

[...] The speed difference between the CPU and the main memory has become so big, that performance is hampered by the speed of the memory in a lot of desktop applications. Even a 512 KB L2-cache and 128 KB L1-cache can not prevent that. The latency of the memory seen by the CPU is very high with such high multipliers and big caches can not hide all the memory latencies.

An Athlon with SRAMs that run 2 times slower than the CPU has no real advantage over a CPU with the L2-cache at one third of the CPU's clockspeed. Until the Thunderbird arrives, we can understand AMD's decision to use a 1/3 divider for the Athlon 900-1000. Faster SRAMS (>350 MHz) would be extremely costly and would not offer significant higher performance. Intel has anticipated this and has never shipped with CPU's with SRAMs faster than 300 MHz (PIII-600).

Barrel komt het verrassende nieuws brengen dat naast Intel AMD ook tekorten heeft. Door het gebrek aan Intel CPU's kopen de mensen ten einde raad een AMD CPU wat ervoor zorgt dat daarvan ook niet meer genoeg zijn:

NEW YORK (CNNfn) - Advanced Micro Devices, the number two maker of microprocessors used in PCs, said on Friday that it has sold out of both its microprocessor lines for the current quarter, a sign of serious capacity constraints in the industry that could crimp PC makers.

A spokesman for Sunnyvale, Calif.-based AMD (AMD: Research, Estimates) said that the company's high-end Athlon processors and its value-priced K6-2 chips are sold out for the second quarter, which ends in June.

"There's either a shortage going on because of manufacturing constraints at Intel or incredible demand," the AMD spokesman said.

The spokesman noted that it is unusual for microprocessors to sell out in the second quarter, which is normally a slow period, with demand picking up in the third and fourth quarters because of the back-to-school and Christmas seasons, as well as new PC models being introduced.

Naturally, we always have reason to be somewhat doubtful whenever the authorities claim to know the first thing about the Internet. But in this case, we wanted to see just how clueless they could possibly be. When the name "mafiaboy" was first mentioned months ago, a couple of us hopped onto IRC using that nick. Sure enough, within seconds, we were being messaged by people who believed we were the person responsible. Amazingly, the person who fell for it the hardest is the very person now being quoted widely in the media as having caught the perpetrator. Now perhaps this is all just a big coincidence. But as you can see from the IRC logs below, we dropped a few clues that the person was in a country with snow and at one point "accidentally" spoke French to imply the province of Quebec. We were amazed when the blame actually landed on someone from Montreal.

It's been a long time coming, but the era of gigahertz computing is finally here. Wave goodbye to the days when you could impress your friends with how many megahertz your computer had, now you'll have to impress them with how many gigahertz you've got. I'll try not to get ahead of myself, but the breaking of 1000 MHz is a pretty big deal, but in other respects isn't important in the slightest. It IS important to show us how far we've come in the last decade, and as a guide for the future. Consider this, it took Intel 16 years to go from the 10 MHz 8086 CPU to the 100 MHz Pentium processor, but has taken less than six years to take that 100 MHz Pentium all the way up to a 1000 Mhz Pentium III. On the other hand, the 1000 MHz processors aren't great leaps ahead of previous Pentium chips in terms of performance. Either way, we're happy to see it in our testbed, and to see it rip all of our previous records to shreds.

Intel and AMD's sissy-race to 1 GHz is over, and AMD has won the battle, but the Coppermine 1 GHz is the first of the two chips to find it's way onto the desk of yours truly. AMD seems to be doing a better job getting their 1,000 MHz offerings into the hands of consumers, which means AMD is having much better yields than Intel's plants are currently experiencing. Could it mean Intel's cutting back production lines for the Coppermine's to get ready for Williamette? No one really knows, but for the months and months it takes to configure a fabrication line, it would seem to coincide with the timeframe we're looking at. Then again, Intel has been having yield problems for more than the past few weeks, so that theory could be kicked out the door right there.

Het overclocken van deze CPU was om het zacht uit te drukken niet echt een succes (jammer genoeg), op 1035 Mhz wou de CPU nog niet eens stabiel lopen.
