Get ready for a new chip on the block. Via Technologies will introduce a new low-priced processor, known by the code name Joshua, at a Feb. 22 news conference in San Jose, Calif. Although Via has yet to formally release pricing and clock speeds for the chip, sources said Joshua initially will be introduced at 433MHz and 466MHz, with 500MHz and 566MHz versions scheduled for release in the second half of this year. Bij GamePC is een review online geplaatst van Soyo's nieuwe Athlon plank, de K7AIA. Dit bordje is nog steeds gebaseerd op de AMD Irongate chipset (met "SuperBypass" feature) en biedt helaas geen support voor FSB overclocking. Uit onderzoek van IDC is gebleken dat 25% van de vorig jaar verkochte server besturingssystemen Linux was. Linux bezet hiermee een tweede positie, voor Novell Netware en achter Windows NT (38%) (thanks DOS voor de tip):

De onderzoekers zijn verrast door de sterke groei van Linux. "We hadden gedacht dat Linux pas in 2002 of 2003 de nummer twee op de markt van serversoftware zou worden. Dat werd dus 1999", aldus IDC-analist Dan Kusnetzky tegenover CNet.

[...] Waarschijnlijk wordt Linux op nog veel meer servers gebruikt, stelt IDC. Het onderzoeksbureau telde immers alleen het aantal verkochte pakketten mee. Thresh's FiringSquad heeft een comparison klaar gezet tussen de Diamond Viper II en de GeForce 256 SDR. Als testmethode zijn Quake 3 Arena en Unreal Tournament gebruikt, (3DMark 2000 is vanwege zijn twijfelachtige betrouwbaarheid achterwege gelaten). Net zoals eerder Hard OCP al ontdekte heeft het activeren van T&L op beide kaarten inderdaad een negatief effect in hoge resolties en 32-bit kleur. Verder wint de GeForce SDR het qua performance wel, maar is de Viper II volgens FS vanwege zijn prijs / prestatie verhouding toch wel een goede keus voor de budget Quaker:

We see from the benchmarks that the Viper II performs very well in Quake 3 and Unreal Tournament, which are two of the most popular games right now. This isn't a fluke. You can bet that S3 made sure to tweak drivers just to optimize performance for those two games. The Viper II might not perform as well with less popular non-multitextured games. The Viper II drivers are still a work in progress. It's been almost three months since the card's release, and T&L still isn't even officially supported yet. Anyone who buys a Viper II should understand and be comfortable with the fact that drivers will be in a constant beta state.

If you're primarily a Quake 3 or Unreal Tournament player, then the Viper II might be a good choice. Also, if DVD performance has any influence in your buying decision, the Viper II wins hands-down, but you better get a good software DVD player.

WebWereld meldt dat er vorig jaar zo'n 30 miljoen PC's verkocht zijn in Europa. Dat is een stijging van 18% t.o.v. het vorige jaar. In West-Europa was de stijging zelfs 32%, maar de Zweden verpestten dit door juist 21% minder poeters te kopen. De reden achter de totale stijging is natuurlijk het internet; iedereen wil tegenwoordig in cyberspace.

Dataquest voert als belangrijkste reden van de Europese groei de belangstelling voor internet aan. Steeds meer mensen willen online, en het liefst met een eigen computer.

De PC wordt volgens Howard Seabrook van Dataquest niet langer meer geassocieerd met eenzame pubers die op donkere zolders hun gewelddadige games spelen. "Computers worden hoe langer hoe meer gebruikt voor internet. Iedereen wil een eigen e-mailadres en online goedkope CD's en tickets bestellen."

De West-Europese markt groeide het snelst, met 32 procent. Een negatieve uitzondering vormt Zweden. Hier werden het afgelopen jaar ruim 21 procent minder PC's verkocht. Landen als Griekenland en Spanje hebben volgens Dataquest ook de internetrevolutie ontdekt.

Compaq is met een marktaandeel van ruim 16 procent in ons werelddeel nog altijd de grootste fabrikant, gevolgd door Fujitsu/Siemens en Dell. Deze laatste fabrikant kende verreweg de grootste groei (34,4 procent), terwijl Compaq (plus 13,4 procent) en IBM (plus 11 procent) achterbleven bij het gemiddelde.

Totaal werden er in Europa 29,9 miljoen PC's verkocht in 1999. De meeste computers werden in Duitsland gekocht, gevolgd door Engeland en Frankrijk.

Ace's Hardware heeft een aantal Savage2000 T&L benchmarks gepost, afkomstig van PC Watch Japan.

De nVidia Treemark demo laat een erg groot verschil zien, maar aangezien deze demo specifiek werd gemaakt om te demonstreren hoe geweldig T&L is, valt te betwijfelen of het ook representatief is voor echte (T&L geoptimaliseerde) games. Volgens Ace's Hardware zijn de T&L presentaties van de Savage2000 met de huidige drivers nog duidelijk lager dan de GeForce.

Hackers magazine 2600 heeft zijn afkeuring van de recente Denial of Service aanvallen tegen o.a. Yahoo!, Amazon en CNN kenbaar gemaakt. Men stoort zich vooral aan de wijze waarop de term 'hacker' misbruikt wordt door de media:

We feel sorry for the major Internet commerce sites that have been inconvenienced by the Denial of Service attacks. Really, we do. But we cannot permit them or anyone else to lay the blame on hackers.

So far, the corporate media has done a very bad job covering this story, blaming hackers and in the next sentence admitting they have no idea who's behind it. Since the ability to run a program (which is all this is) does not require any hacking skills, claiming that hackers are behind it indicates some sort of knowledge of the motives and people involved.

This could be the work of someone who lost their life savings to electronic commerce. Or maybe it's the work of communists. It could even be corporate America itself! After all, who would be better served by a further denigration of the hacker image with more restrictions on individual liberties?

Let's look at the headlines:

"Government sees cyber-attacks as disruption of commerce."

"Justice Department wants more funds to fight cyber crime."

Didn't take them long, did it? And later in the same story: "But the FBI may never know who is responsible for the cyber-attacks, due to the difficulty in tracing the electronic trails, a senior law enforcement source told CNN."

How convenient. An unseen villain. No need for any actual FACTS to be revealed, but plenty of blame to be cast on hackers everywhere. We find it to be a bit too contrived.

Whoever is responsible is either completely clueless or knows EXACTLY what they're doing. It's the latter that should concern hackers everywhere.

The Register schrijft dat geheugenfabrikanten kampen met grote overvoorraden van 20 tot 30 miljoen units. De (voor ons consumenten gunstige) invloeden van deze overcapaciteit zijn inmiddels merkbaar in de prijs, zo zagen we de 128MB PC100 DIMM prijzen in de Pricewatch binnen korte tijd dalen van ~FL 375 naar ~FL 320. De afnemende vraag naar geheugens schijnt mede veroorzaakt te worden door de leveringsproblemen bij Intel:

Memory makers have already begun their inventory fire sale. This saw 64Mb DRAM chips contract prices fall 4.31 per cent in North America, 2.95 per cent in Europe and 4.09 per cent in Asia for the 30-day rolling average to January 21 (compared with the 30 days to Jan 14).

Latest prices for 64Mb DRAMs (PC100, 8M x 8) captured by ICIS-LOR were US$9.62 in North America, US$9.87 in Europe and US$10.55 in Asia.

The price for 64MB DIMMS (PC100) eased from Jan 14 to Jan 21 by 0.99 per cent to US$64.83 in North America, 0.60 pe rcent to US$66.73 in Europe and 2.27 per cent to US$64.50 in Asia.

Het ANP meldt dat het Amerikaanse ministerie van Justitie een strafrechtelijk onderzoek instelt naar de daders achter de Denial of Service aanvallen die afgelopen dagen de websites van Yahoo!, eBay, Buy.com, CNN, Amazon en ZDNet troffen:

Openbare aanklagers voegen zich bij de Amerikaanse federale recherche FBI, die zaak al enkele dagen in de gaten houdt. 'Cybercops' moeten de daders achterhalen, aldus minister Janet Reno woensdagavond.

[...] Vooralsnog ontbreekt van de hackers elk spoor. Bij de overval van Yahoo zijn zo'n vijftig computers gebruikt. De hackers werken met softwareprogramma's die de enorme informatiestromen op gang brengen. De supercomputers die de netwerken van de internetbedrijven aansturen (zogenoemde servers) konden die niet aan. Toen werd gezocht naar millenniumproblemen kwamen dergelijke problemen al aan het licht.

Op de effectenbeurs van New York moesten de getroffen bedrijven forse koersverliezen incasseren. Bedrijfjes die gespecialiseerd zijn in het beveiligen van websites sponnen echter garen bij de overvallen. Zo steeg RSA Security ruim 20 procent, Trend Micro bijna 6 procent.

Volgens ZDNet heeft Intel een gedeelte van haar Pentium III leveringsproblemen kunnen oplossen. PC fabrikanten melden nu dat ze eindelijk systemen gebaseerd op de 800MHz Pentium III kunnen leveren. Gemiddeld is de wachttijd van 30 dagen terug gebracht naar een dag of 10. Systemen met een Athlon 800MHz processor zijn wel normaal leverbaar; binnen een dag of 3. Many consumers have been waiting, and then waiting some more, for PCs configured with Intel Corp.'s 800MHz Pentium III chip ever since its launch in late December.

But the wait is apparently over, as PC makers say that Intel's (Nasdaq: INTC) processor has been in better supply recently.

Supplies of the fastest Pentium III chip continue to be tight. But whereas manufacturing lead times were as long as 30 days for PCs using the chip, large direct-PC vendors are now asking customers to wait only one-third that time -- roughly eight to 10 days.

PC makers attribute the faster time line to greater supplies of the 800MHz processor, introduced Dec. 20.

Dell Computer Corp. (Nasdaq: DELL), which is now quoting 10-day lead times on Dimension PCs with the 800MHz Pentium, is hoping to get those times down to its norm of three to five days over the next two weeks, company officials said.

One more feature is this small button on the far left hand upper corner which in Windows 98 allows you to put your computer into suspend mode. I have to say, this can be good and bad, having everything at our fingertips may cause us to be somewhat lazy, wont it? Yet, convenience is convenience.
