The alliance will attempt to accelerate the adoption of 10-Gigabit Ethernet technology in LANs, WANs, and MANs, or so-called municipal area networks, according to Tony Lee, president of the alliance and director of product marketing at communications-equipment maker Extreme Networks Inc., Cupertino, Calif.

Security Focus lijkt een redelijk serieuze authentificatie bug in MySQL gevonden te hebben. Versies 3.23.10, 3.23.9, 3.23.8, 3.22.30, 3.22.29, 3.22.27 en 3.22.26 zijn gevoelig voor het probleem (thanks xoror voor de tip):

A vulnerability exists in the password verification scheme utilized by MySQL. This vulnerability will allow any user on a machine that has been granted access to connect to the database to connect as any user to that database. Instead of having to know an account name and password, the attacker need only know a legitimate account name. Versions from 3.22.26a and above are all vulnerable. Prior versions may too be vulnerable; this has not been confirmed.

The flaw lies in the fact that the server uses a string returned by the client to iterate through a comparison, without verifying the string it is using is of sufficient length.

scrambled is a string returned by the client. If a user returns a single character as the value for the scrambled variable, only one byte will be compared to the expected password. So long as this one character matches, MySQL will authenticate the user, and allow them to access the database. According to details provided by the poster of this vulnerability, this will take at most 32 tries.

Ik lees in de Planet Multimedia, die zojuist mijn mailbox binnenstuiterde, dat ZDNet het jongste slachtoffer is van een DoS aanval:

Ongeveer 70 procent van de inhoud, waaronder ZD Network News and ZDNet Product Reviews, van de site was niet te bereiken. De aanval duurde ongeveer twee uur. Het lijkt erop dat deze aanval tot dezelfde categorie gerekend kan worden als de aanvallen van gisteren op eBay, Amazon.com, Buy.com en CNN. De zogenoemde 'denial of service attack' werd ook hier weer toegepast. Een constante stroom data liet de servers van het betreffende bedrijf vollopen.

De FBI waarshuwde ZDNet voor een aanval reeds voordat deze plaats had gevonden. Dit geeft de indruk dat de FBI de bron van de aanvallen al op het spoor is.

Ondanks een in december gepresenteerde verbeterde chip revisie blijken de yields van de 500MHz G4 nog steeds rond een extreem lage 1% te liggen. Hoewel Motorola ontkent dat er problemen zijn gaan er inmiddels geruchten dat Apple door deze aanhoudende leveringsproblemen dermate gefrusteerd is dat het met Transmeta in zee wil gaan:

Inmiddels doen berichten de ronde dat Apple zo gefrustreerd is door Motorola dat het kijkt naar andere processorplatformen. De naam van chipontwerper Transmeta duikt in dit verband steevast op. De vorige maand onthulde Crusoe-processors van dat bedrijf beloven niet alleen hoge kloksnelheden, maar zijn ook energiezuinig en bieden bovendien een geavanceerde vorm van emulatie. Dat laatste element zou het overzetten van systeemsoftware relatief eenvoudig moeten maken. Apple verstrekt geen commentaar op deze berichten.

Toshiba heeft een verbeterd RDRAM ontwerp gepresenteerd waarmee een 8% kleinere die-size mogelijk is. Kleinere chippies betekent lagere produktiekosten en dat is weer prettig voor de consument, die op dit moment nog weinig roeping lijkt te zien om Rambus RIMMetjes binnen te hamsteren:

The 0.175-micron, 288-Mbit RDRAM, which will be described at the International Solid State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) in San Francisco, will begin sampling this spring. Toshiba also plans to use the design for later versions of its 144-Mbit Rambus memory, which is just coming on stream.

Reducing RDRAM core size by 8 percent will not make the die size — a key factor in determining manufacturing cost — equal to that of lower-cost SDRAMs, which can be more than 20 percent smaller than 800-MHz RDRAMs. But to Toshiba, it is a step in the right direction to make RDRAMs a mainstream product.

[...] "In order to popularize RDRAMs, we definitely need to reduce production cost by area reduction," Mukai said. "This is 10 percent larger than SDRAMs. But in the case of a 256-Mbit [device] in a conventional design, it was 20 percent or more."

Voor vandaag trakteert Anand himself ons op een review van de Epox EP-3VCA, een socket 370 plank gebaseerd op VIA's Apollo Pro 133A chipset. Hoewel dit bordje zeer stabiel bleek bleek te opereren zullen overklokkers vanwege het ontbreken van voltage tweaking er niet erg blij mee zijn. Hieronder wat meer info:

The 3VCA is definitely one of the more stable Apollo Pro 133A solutions we have seen, which is something that we have come to expect from EPoX as a manufacturer. They have always been big with VIA chipsets, especially after their strong introduction of their VIA based Super7 line not too long ago.

The 3VCA does have its shortcomings, primarily relating to overclocking or its lack of cooperation when overclocking. It is definitely a shame that a feature such as a manual voltage configuration hasn't made its way onto all of the latest motherboards, but it is a feature that will keep the 3VCA out of the hands of many. Even if you have faith in your FC-PGA CPU and believe that it will overclock to 733MHz+ without increasing the core voltage, you'll want to take into account that the higher clocked Pentium IIIs are set at a 1.65v core voltage for a reason. If you plan on overclocking, the 3VCA isn't for you.

As a general usage Apollo Pro 133A board, the 3VCA isn't bad at all. The stability of the board is about average and if the overclocking limitations aren't bothersome and you have limited access to the 133A boards you can get your hands on, then the 3VCA isn't a bad choice, it's just not the greatest.

Bij Computer Planet zag ik wat info over de Kerbango, een erg coole retro-style vormgegeven radio die ook internet stations kan ontvangen. Je kunt hem zelfs aan je PC of LAN hangen waardoor het apparaat met behulp het display je MP3's kan afspelen. De Kerbango komt deze lente in Amerika op de markt tegen een prijs van $300 dollar. BBC News bericht dat Eurocommissaris Mario Monti een onderzoek heeft gestart naar mogelijk anti-competitieve features in Windows 2000. De Europese Unie zal sancties opleggen indien de aanklacht bewezen wordt:

Mr Monti said: "I've given the green light to start an examination into certain new features of Microsoft's next-generation operating system."

The Commission is concerned, he said, that "Microsoft has designed parts of Windows 2000 in such a way which will permit it to leverage its dominance in PC operating systems into other markets.

"Whoever gains dominance in the software service market gains dominance in electronic commerce too," Mr Monti added. Nu.nl meldt in dit bericht dat ondanks de sterkte toename van het internetgebruik vrijwel niemand online bestelt én afrekent. Slechts 3% schijnt het betalen via internet te vertrouwen:

AMSTERDAM - Het gebruik van internet neemt in Nederlandse huishoudens met grote sprongen toe. Het groeiende aanbod van gratis toegang tot dit medium draagt daar flink toe bij. Bestellen via Internet gebeurt echter nog maar mondjesmaat, terwijl betalen via dit medium slechts bij hoge uitzondering plaatsvindt.

Slechts 3 procent van de 'internet-huishoudens' heeft wel eens iets besteld en het ook elektronisch afgerekend. Volgens Marktonderzoeksbureau Heliview vinden de betalingsmogelijkheden van creditcard en i-pay in Nederland namelijk nog weinig opgang. Bovendien is het vertrouwen in 'betalen via internet' nog klein.

Het volk van The Tech Zone schreef een review van de AMK CO-P701, een erg lompe cooler vooral geschikt voor Athlon gebuikers in het bezit van een Asus K7M bord. De CO-P701 bleek zijn werk erg goed te doen; een Athlon 500 steeg slechts 2 graden na hem te overklokken naar 800MHz!

To do the overclocking test, I had to remove the Athlon casing and attach the FreeSpeed Pro from NinjaMicro. Removing the back casing had an amazing effect. The CPU temp dropped a full 10C! This allowed me to overclock the Athlon 500 to a 800Mhz and the temp reading was still 8C below what I got at 500Mhz! If you're looking for a no cost way to lower the operating temp of your Athlon, remove the back plate.

The CO-P701 does a great job removing the heat from the hot AMD. Temp reading went up just 2C going from 500Mhz to 800Mhz. The cooler was unable to get my Athlon above 800Mhz however. Still this is amazing performance for such an inexpensive cooler. The unit is super quiet. I couldn't hear the fan running. If noise is a consideration, you'll love this cooler.

Overall, this is one of the best Athlon coolers on the market. If you have an Asus K7M motherboard and don't want to go though what I did to get an Alpha P3125 to fit into it, then you're best choice is the CO-P701 from AMK Services. It's a steal at $17.25.

The Register meldt dat de waarde van het AMD aandeel gisteren tot 41,38 dollar is gestegen. Investeringsbank Needham & Co voorspelt dat het aandeel dit jaar zal stijgen tot $56. Intel blijft het ondertussen goed doen en stijgt naar $108,81:

AMD's share price has, however, gone through the roof since it bumped along in the bargain basement for months at $16 during last summer.

That was before it introduced its Athlon microprocessor, which now appears to be gaining some momentum in the corporate market, compounded by difficulties rival Intel has had in delivering sufficient Coppermine Pentium IIIs to sate demand.

Voor mensen in het bezit van een DVD speler wordt beschreven hoe je de performance en kwaliteit kunt tweaken door middel van het erg handige proggie DVD Genie. Hieronder wat info over het gebruik van CD-Quick cache:

For the more hardcore people out there, particularly those with CD-writers & DVD drives. CD-Quick cache may be more suitable for you. With this program you “Can use up to 64MB of RAM or 512MB of hard disk for a CD-ROM cache”. This amount can be changed as you see fit.

While it does actually work (& work very well at that) it may not be of too much benefit to people that mainly game on the PC or those where the CD usage is minimal (playing audio CD’s doesn’t count), the $29 price for registering may also turn you off it.

NOTE – You can use either RAM or the Disk for the caching purposes, but not both.

Set the Disk cache to 32MB or so (depending on usage you may need more, or less). Unless you have over 128MB RAM I wouldn’t recommend using the RAM for caching. Although this may depend on whether or not you use the PC for other RAM intensive applications, such as games, or multimedia editing, like Adobe Photoshop. Seeing as the RAM is faster you may not need to set it quite as high as the Disk cache.

For best performance you should use RAM for caching, however this will leave less available for other applications. As a result most people will use the Disk cache instead.

crazyhorse zag dat er bij AnandTech een review geplaatst was van de Absolute Multimedia Outrageous 3D Graphics GeForce DDR videokaart. Hoewel dit model een stuk goedkoper is dan andere DDR modellen is er wel op de 2D kwaliteit bezuinigd. In hogere resoluties zoals 1600x1200 was dit dan ook duidelijk merkbaar:

The answer is simple: quality. Every card has filters between the RAMDAC and the VGA output of a card, in fact these are essential for the card function. Absolute Multimedia has apparently used these filters to cut corners. Crazyhorse bracht ons op de hoogte van deze Asus P3C-E review van Sharky Extreme. De P3C-E is de Rambus versie van het Asus i820 plankje en heeft een jumperless BIOS CPU setup met ondersteuning voor 15 busspeeds en de mogelijkheid tot voltage tweaking. Sharky Extreme onderzocht in hoeverre de i820 chipset overgeklokt kan worden. Enderzijds heeft de i820 als voordeel de 1/2 AGP divider, aan de andere kant kunnen er problemen ontstaan met instabiele Rambus RIMMetjes, die onder normale omstandigheden al op een erg hoge kloksnelheid van 400Mhz draaien:

Initially thought to be the answer to the overclocker's late-night prayers (due to a 1/2 AGP divider), the P3C-E introduces a new factor into the equation. With the Rambus new memory technology running at 400MHz (already requiring a heatsink), we have found RDRAM to be fairly sensitive to frequency shifts. Alsof AMR nog niet genoeg ellende heeft veroorzaakt hebben zowel Intel als de ACRSiG nieuwe riser standaards aangekondigd. Intel denkt ons blij te mogen met de CNR (Communications and Networking Riser) standaard en ACRSiG, een vriendenclubje van onder meer AMD, Acer, 3Com, Via, nVidia, Lucent, Motorola en Texas Instruments, hoopt hetzelfde te bereiken met de ACR (Advanced Communication Riser) specificatie. Beide doen in beginsel hetzelfde: kosten besparen door de het netwerk, audio en modem werk zoveel mogelijk naar de CPU te verplaatsen:

The [CNR] specification provides interfaces to support multichannel audio, V.90 analog modem, telephone line-based home networking, and 10/100 Ethernet-based networking, as well as expandability for future technologies. The specification defines the CNR architecture for both standard and low-profile risers and includes electrical, mechanical, and thermal requirements of the riser interface.

The ACR Specification supports modem, audio, Local Area Network (LAN), and Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) technologies. Provisions are also made for future wireless bus support. The ACR Specification enables riser-based broadband communications, networking peripheral and audio subsystem designs in an open-standards context. The ACR Specification 1.0 is planned for publication later this month.

ZDNet schrijft dat binnen een periode van 2 dagen vijf van de meest populaire internet sites slachtoffer zijn geworden van een Denial of Service attack. Yahoo! wordt hiermee gevolgd door eBay, Buy.com, Amazon en CNN. Beveiligingsexperts vrezen dat er weinig gedaan kan worden om DoS aanvallen te voorkomen. In het geval van de Buy.com aanval werd de hosting provider van Buy.com geflood met 800Mbit traffic per seconde, meer dan 25 keer zoveel als wat Buy.com onder normale omstandigheden te verwerken krijgt (thanks kAtAnA voor de tip):

eBay, Buy.com and Yahoo! all were targeted by coordinated, distributed denial-of-service attacks -- a technique in which attackers use a great number of compromised servers to flood a target with data. This type of attack takes only limited technical expertise and can be very hard to stop.

"Denial of service is becoming more sophisticated," according to a "white-hat" hacker working for security firm @Stake Inc. who identifies himself as Weld Pond. "The problem is not going away."

[...] While filtering packets can be a defense against most of today's tools designed to conduct a distributed denial-of-service attack, new techniques could bypass such defenses.

Once such tool for attackers, known as Stream.c, sends forged TCP/IP packets, which a typical router will pass to the destination server. The packets can be designed to take up precious computing cycles before the data is determined to be bad.
