Many of the postulated benefits of the Itanium are due not to any inherent advantage of going from 32 to 64 bits, (unlike the moves from 8 to 16 to 32 bits) but from having the CPU execute several 8 to 32 bit operations in parrallel which is the VLIW paradigm or a sort of generalized 3DNow/SSE instruction set. It is providing a compiler that can parrallelize instructions in this way that has occupied Intel for many years as a compiler was developed to take advantage of the planned architecture of the Itanium.

What I find intriguing is that Sledgehammer may come out from the start with two cores per chip. 64 bits should handle any address requirements for a long time, and if instructions are provided to synchronize the cores to allow for 128 moves, loads, etc. AMD could be shipping a 128bit processor a few months after Intel ships its 64 bit processor. The dual cores would let the chip take advantage of years of development of multithreaded operating systems and compilers without so much as a re-compile. The synch instructions would let it move data at twice the per/clock rate of Itanium.

Onder de naam Latitude LS en CSx biedt Dell twee nieuwe ultralichte notebooks aan. Met een gewicht van 1,6 kg en een dikte van 25,7 mm is de Latitude een van de meer compacte notebooks op de markt. De naam 'Latitude' is volgens Dell een verwijzing naar de ideale werkomgeving: het vliegtuig. "Het bedrijf mikt vooral op klanten die regelmatig reizen en daarbij zo'n licht mogelijke pc willen meenemen, zonder daarom aan prestatievermogen en handigheid te moeten inboeten," zegt Bo Olofsson, een woordvoerder van Dell.

Het hart van de Latitude LS is een Intel Mobile Pentium III, geklokt op 400 MHz. De communicatiemogelijkheden worden geleverd door een ingebouwde 56,6-Kbps modem en een Ethernet-netwerkkaart. Voor het geheugen wordt tot 128MB SDRAM voorzien en de harde schijf heeft een capaciteit van 4,8 GB. Het beeldscherm is een 12,1-inch TFT SVGA.

De Latitude CSx is de grotere broer van de LS. Met een 500-MHz Mobile PIII en een uitbreidingsmogelijkheid tot 320 MB SDRAM is er geen gebrek aan prestaties.

AMSTERDAM - VA Linux is vrijdag de beurs op gegaan en zag zijn aandeel de eerste dag een stijging van 733 procent doormaken. Daarmee heeft de fabrikant van Linux-PC's een nieuw record gezet voor beursgangen in de Verenigde Staten (VS). De vorige recordhouder was webportaal theglobe.com dat 606 procent piekte.

Het Californische VA Linux gaf 4,4 miljoen aandelen uit voor een startprijs van dertig dollar per stuk. De prijs was al twee keer verhoogd; oorspronkelijk lag het op een bescheiden elf dollar per aandeel. De koers van VA Linux was reeds voor de opening van de beurs fors gestegen. De handel begon op een prijsniveau van 299 dollar, bereikte zelfs de 320 dollar en beleefde ook even een 'dieptepunt' van 233 dollar.

Aan het einde van de eerste beursdag noteerde de Amerikaanse technologiebeurs Nasdaq tweehonderdvijftig dollar voor het aandeel VA Linux. So, do I deem The Card Cooler a worthy purchase? Well, simple as its mechanism and design may appear, The Card Cooler works extremely well. Judging from the temperature drops implemented, it not only assists to stabilize an overclocked GeForce, but also inevitably aids to prolong chip life.

Granted that it doesn’t allow one to reach significantly faster clock speeds, but I was typically more concerned with managing my card temperatures at existing overclocked settings. This is especially applicable for GeForce users that don’t possess any existing fan setup (excluding the chassis fan) to implement cooling. So really, I find this cooler indispensable now, to reassure myself that I won’t actually burn a hole in my GeForce one day...

However, I guess with another “fan addition” to my system (9 fans in total now!), that doesn’t bode too well for my already swamped 300W power supply. ;P

On the Pentium III-Xeon chips, the 733MHz part now costs $804, a three per cent reduction, the 667MHz $633, also a three per cent reduction, and the 600MHz Pentium III Xeon $494, a two per cent reduction.

For Pentium III Slot 1 chips, the percentage reductions are similar, save on the 533MHz parts (notice the change between .25 and .18 micron).

The 733MHz (.18) now costs $754 (3%), the 700MHz (.18) costs $733 (3%), the 667MHz(.18) $583 (4%), the 650MHz (.18) $562 (4%), the 600MHz (.18) $444 (2%).

There are seven per cent reductions on the 533MHz Pentium III desktop in both .25 micron and .18 micron, with the former now costing $294, and the latter $284.

This indicates that Intel has successfully moved its process from .25 micron to .18 micron on this particular part. In the next months, we confidently predict it will do the same for other members of its so-far trouble dogged Coppermine family.

CG: The idea of using two chips at once to improve performance was popularized back with the Voodoo2 from 3dfx. Now they're doing it again in a single-card solution with the Voodoo5. Your multi-chip technology works in a different way. Could you explain how it differs?

Lee: In the SLI technique, one chip would draw all the even lines and one would draw all the odd lines. The key with that technique is that both of the chips work on the same frame, and both would process the same triangle setup on the one frame. ATI knew of that technique and felt that it was inefficient in that both of the chips would have to wait for the other one to finish it's stuff before moving on to the next frame. With our technique, Alternate Frame Rendering, one chip renders even frames and one renders odd frames. So we've taken the same concept but instead of working on the same frame, we've separated it so the chips don't have to wait for the other chip to move on to the next frame. Each chip is responsible for it's own set of frames.

CG: What about latency? Is it possible that one chip could get too far ahead of the other one, causing a potential split-second difference in the time between input is made and the frame that is created from that input actually shows up on screen?

Lee: I'll have to admit that the latency concern is something that our competitor has brought up to sort of discredit the whole technique. But in talking with our engineers on it, the whole latency level of the Rage Fury MAXX is the same in double buffer as with a single-chip doing triple buffering. It's really not much of a concern—latency isn't ever even brought up as a concern when talking about a single chip doing triple buffering. We're building a white paper that will explain it to everyone.

Via Voodoo Extreme kwam ik een link tegen naar dit nieuwsbericht van Yahoo Finance over nVidia's nieuwe 3D chip. Het artikel geeft niet echt concrete info over een opvolger van de GeForce, maar er wordt wel gezegd dat het design af is .

BXBoards heeft een review rond het Gigabyte GA-7IX plankje in elkaar getimmerd. Dit GA-7IX is een voorzien van de AMD Irongate North- en Southbridge en heeft een volautomagische setup, wat helaas tot gevolg heeft dat er voor de overklokkers weinig eer met dit bord te behalen valt:

CPU set-up is totally automatic and the BIOS does not support any form of overclocking in any form. This is somewhat understandable - the FIC SD-11 is unusable when any bus speed past 100Mhz is selected, and I do not expect Gigabyte to unlock any further speeds within the BIOS, although the onboard clock generator should be capable of providing additioal speeds. The standard 100Mhz bus offers the usual AGP clock speed of 66Mhz, with PCI operating at a standard 33Mhz.

Overclockers' Workbench heeft een review online gemikt van de Abit WB6, gebaseerd op de brakke Intel 810e chipset die je dus niet wil hebben. Hieronder een hap uit de conlusie:

A product that comes late but works well because of it's specifications. For those who wants proper support of 133Mhz FSB should go for either i820 or the VIA Apollo Pro133A based mainboards that will be available real soon.

As I have said, i810e, it's more of an interim kind of solution just like VIA Apollo Pro133. It is cheap, reliable but lacks the AGP 4X. You might want to sit back and wait a while before the mass productions of i820 boards and ApolloPro133A based boards are easily availiable.

Performance wise, I always feel that Intel BX chipset is still the best among ZX, BX, i810, ApolloPro, Apollo Pro133. In terms of benchmarks, it still outperforms the i810.

For ATA-66 performance, I would definitely recommend a controller card based on HIghpoint or Promise chipset. They're proven and they outperform the i810 ATA-66 controller.

Overclocking wise, it loses out to it's BX counterparts the BE6-II with 1Mhz step intervals.!

Before I forget, I particularly like the Yamaha chipset sound quality especially when playing MIDI files. They sound excellent, better than any other sound cards out there !!

Bij Lost Circuits is een errug uitgebreide review te lezen van AMD's Athlon op 750MHz. Elk aspect komt uitgebreid aan bod, alleen heeft de reviewer niet geprobeerd om het ding te overklokken . Hieronder vast een plak uit de test:

With the new 180 nm die and 750 MHz, the cache divider has been set to 2/5 or 40% of the clock speed, in other words the cache runs 20% slower than it would at a 1 /2 divider or 17% slower than the L2 of the Athlon 700 or at the same speed as the L2 of the Athlon 600. There are so many ways to skin this cat that it really doesn’t matter which way one states it, suffice it to say that it is slightly slower than what we are used to with the Athlon 700. This, of course, will impinge dramatically on all L2 intensive applications like, for example, Microsoft Office and naturally slow down the performance in Microsoft Word and Excel. But then, the large 128 KB level 1 cache running at clock speed will also have a word in that and at least partially compensate for the reduced L2 speed. In other words, there is no reason to assume that the Athlon 750 will run any slower in business applications than the Athlon 700.

Other applications, like CAD and gaming will not really be affected since the data are too large for the L2 cache anyway and, therefore, they thrive mainly on the Integer and Floating Point performance of the CPU.

There is even an equalization setting for extra bass. The frequency range is great and the sound is crisp and solid. There are two modes in this mp3 player, one of them is mp3 and the other is voice, in order to play mp3’s you have to be in the mp3 mode, but if you want to record a note or a conversation, voice mode must be on. This player has a decent microphone and you can hear what you plan to record through the earphones so you can tell how loud the recording will be prior to hitting the REC button the side. This player does not record immediately, there is a brief setup time .After it finishes recording, a file is saved into the memory named Voice001. Although the microphone is great at short distances, for lectures or long range recording, an external microphone is recommended.

The LCD is a great because of the amount of data that it displays. While a song is playing, the title is scrolled from right to left and when you turn off the player, it even says "GOOD BYE!". These little things make this player a touch better than the rest. Navigation through the player is easy, after hitting the Menu key, there is a menu that can be used with the REW and FF keys and the SEL button.

VHware schrijft dat Hardwarelab.de benchmarks met de volgende CPU-configs heeft gepost:

- 700MHz - 1/2 Cache Divider
- 700MHz - 1/3 Cache Divider
- 750MHz - 1/3 Cache Divider
- 800MHz - 1/3 Cache Divider

Dit soort testen met verschillende kloksnelheden en L2 cache dividers zijn we al eerder tegengekomen, en ook hier is de conclusie hetzelfde: het verlagen van de L2 cache divider naar 1/3 van de CPU kloksnelheid is alleen af te raden als je veel gebruik maakt van professionele programma's (hier wordt Cinema4D gebruikt) waarbij bv. veel gerenderd moet worden en de last ten volle op de processor en L2 cache ligt.
