Technische Status 14 December 1999: Door het bijplaatsen van extra modempoorten kan het zijn dat abonnees enige hinder ondervinden. We verwachten dat dit aan het einde van de middag is opgelost.

GamePC trakteert ons op een review van de AOpen AX6C i820 moederbord met 3 RIMM sloten. Het systeem bleek na een uur of 6 van zware tests hopeloos te crashen met 3 RIMM modules, hoewel dit ook gebeurde met 2 RIMMetjes. GamePC zegt er wel bij dat onder normale omstandigheden alles 'rocksolid' draait:

But let's back up a minute. We got these errors under LONG periods of stress testing, running incredible amounts of data throughout the memory under controlled circumstances. During everyday work, such as writing this review, is perfectly stable, even with 3 RIMM's. I've been working and writing on this machine for more than a week now, and during everyday work, and a few hours of after-work gaming here and there, the board has been remarkably stable. Considering an everyday gamer doesn't stress test their computer for hours and hours on end, we feel pretty confident than the everyday gamer won't see any problems with this board, even running with 3 RIMM's.

Other than the 3 RIMM controversy, this board is pretty decent, with jumperless CPU tweaking, and some great overclocking options. All things considered, we were able to get our Coppermine 650 chip to be stable at 775 on this board, we feel it could have gone further, but there is a large FSB jump in the AX6C, (114 to 120, nothing in between). Our Abit BE6-II testbed got the processor to 800 MHz stable, but the BE6-II has single-speed FSB increments.

Rounding out the board, the ATA/66 worked beatifully, everything is clearly marked on the board, it's easy to install and use, has good IDE and power supply placements, overall it's just a good board. Of course, this model does come with AC'97 onboard sound, which is interesting considering it has an audio/modem riser slot as well. The onboard audio is decent, but any real gamer will disable it and use a better (and less CPU taxing) sound card.

Upon visual inspection, my eyes were immediately drawn to the platinum heatsink which keeps the Intel 440BX Chipset cool. Apparently the attractive heatsink dispatches more heat than the traditional aluminnium heatsink. Before I could consider this a real feature or a marketing gimmick, my eyes went off wondering again, this time to the black PCB and the board’s footer. This mainboard was no doubt meant to be pleasing to the eye. The actual board, or ‘PCB’, is jet black, which is a nifty little feature which I have yet to see on another motherboard. Yet another point of interest is the board’s footer. A platinum plate with ‘Millennium Edition’ scribed in fancy writing is pressed on to the bottom middle of the board, truly complimenting the black PCB mentioned earlier. While this combination of looks does little in the way of performance, it sure is cool. Motherboards have always been ugly, and probably always will be forever ugly, but the AX6BC Pro II does a good job at flashing lots of shiny bits around, allowing the board to look less unattractive than usual.

In short: It looks real cool

So what has changed in terms of layout and design? Well for starters AOpen have thrown away the 2 x ISA 5 x PCI card combo, ditching the ISA slots in favor of 6 x PCI. Their are other minor changes, such as larger capacitors, that altough minor, still help the board chug along that little bit quicker.

Riva Extreme maakt ons vandaag blij met een review van de Asus V6600 Deluxe GeForce 256 kaart. Ook Riva Extreme was erg te spreken over het kaartje, mede dankzij de goede overklokbaarheid (142/196MHz) werden erg hoge prestaties gemeten. Hieronder een gedeelte:

The Smart Doctor actually taught me things about my system that I was previously unaware of, and it helped to make the V6600 easily the best video card that I've ever had in the test machine. When/if Asus puts out a DDR version of this card, grab it up as fast as you can - it will be worth it and you'll never be more pleased with a video card. I'd venture to say that you would be completely pleased with the V6600 Deluxe as well. Overall, it's highly recommended.

For showing innovations, postively easy and stable operation at overclocked and natural speeds, a load of features, and a reasonable price, the Asus V6600 Deluxe deserves a superior and a second look from you. Right now, it's certainly the cream of the Single Data Rate RAM crop, and I suggest you snap one up before Asus sells them all.

In tegenstelling tot berichten van twee week geleden, waarin werd bekend gemaakt dat de release van de eerste DVD-Audio spelers met een half jaar vertraagd zouden worden, zal Pioneer toch nog dit jaar met een DVD-Audio player komen. Het apparaat zal in eerste instantie zonder copy protection geleverd worden, omdat de huidige - inmiddels gekraakte - DVD beveiliging niet meer voldoet. Pioneer heeft blijkbaar geen trek om te wachten tot de nieuwe CSS2 encryptie methode klaar is, en parkeert de DVD player deze maand nog op de markt:

Pioneer has now decided not to wait, according to EE Times, and will ship its player without DVD Audio copy protection but with sufficient security for DVD Video playback which the machine also supports.

The reason? The simple fact it, Pioneer reckons there won't be any DVD Audio titles available until the new version of CSS2 ships, so it will push the player as a video machine upgradeable to a DVD Audio player.

Uit de benchmarks blijkt dat de MAXX op hoge resoluties bij 16-bit over het algemeen sneller is dan een gewone GeForce. Op 32-bit zijn er grotere verschillen, soms in het voordeel van de GeForce (Unreal Tournament) en meestal in het voordeel van de MAXX (Quake III).

Electronic Business Asia bericht dat VIA meer info heeft vrijgegeven over de Samuel processor. Deze opvolger van de VIA Joshua is socket370 compatible en zal op kloksnelheden van 500 tot 700MHz draaien, bij een busspeed van 66 tot 133MHz:

The Samuel is essentially a migration of the Winchip 4 core which came from VIA's acquisition of the IDT Centaur division. Richard Brown, a spokesman for VIA in Taipei, confirmed that Samuel will run at clock speeds in the 500-700 MHz range and will most likely be fabbed by National Semiconductor with a 0.18 process. The resulting die size, coupled with low power consumption, should make it an ideal processor for embedded applications and information appliances, according to Brown.

The quoted clock speeds are at "true megahertz," says Brown, and are not PR rated. Samuel will probably incorporate the AMD 3D Now! multimedia instruction set and run at bus speeds of 66-, 100-, and 133 MHz. According to VIA, Samuel will be formally announced in the second quarter of 2000. Samuel is designed for socket 370 and will be pin-compatible with the Intel Celeron processor.

InfoWorld meldt dat Compaq en Samsung hebben aangekondigd dat ze samen 500 miljoen dollar zullen investeren in de Alpha architectuur:

Dit wekt grote ergernis op bij de gebruikers die een volwassen produkt verwachten. COAX Nederland voert gesprekken over deze ergernissen met de producent van chello. Wij brengen de klachten gebundeld en gestructureerd over aan UPC/chello en maken dan afspraken over de door te voeren verbeteringen of financiële compensatie. Vervolgens informeren wij onze leden dan weer over de gemaakte afspraken. Onze leden stellen een goede communicatie met chello/UPC zeer op prijs. Er is het laatste jaar al veel verbeterd.
